This Is Ruby

Rate this book
Ruby is curious about her world and has big ideas about how it works. A delightful picture book celebration of science and creativity, and a welcome companion to Sara O'Leary's beloved This Is Sadie.

Ruby is a little girl with a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm that's too big to contain! Ruby is always busy -- she loves to make things, watch things grow and figure out how things work, with her dog Teddy by her side. And Ruby has lots of ideas about what she wants to be: maybe an animal conservationist? Or an archaeologist? She's great at excavating (i.e. digging holes). Or maybe an inventor? She's already invented a book with smells instead of words (so dogs can read it) and a time machine (the dinosaurs did have feathers after all, and the future is looking wild). This is Ruby, and this is her world.

See that cute girl on the cover? That’s Ruby, the little girl who seems curious about everything around her. She uses her creativity to fill in her day with amazing ideas and fun exploration. Giving her company on her mindboggling imaginative journeys is her canine companion Teddy.

Children will enjoy and identify with Ruby’s world. It has no limits, it has no rules. She does whatever her heart and mind tell her to do. Adults reading this book to their little ones will be reminded of their own carefree childhood days. The book reminds you to do whatever brings you joy and to live in the moment.

What stands out in the story is that Ruby embraces various options from the STEM field. She will serve as a lovely role model for children of colour, and for girls.

I found the end a little abrupt. But it does pack quite a lot of content within its few pages.

This is one case where the artwork outshines the story. The illustrations are absolutely scrumptiously adorable! Every time I saw Ruby, I felt like ruffling her curls and pulling her cheeks. Every page has a delightful illustration.

Thank you, NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada, for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Ruby is a little girl with a wide an varied range of interests. She spends the book exploring these interests, while the art gets more and more colourful and almost psychedelic.

Look, this book isn't about the story, it's about the excellent, excellent art.

Sure, there is a theme of being yourself, which is a great theme, but also one that about 90% of picture books have these days.

Get it for the art. Also get a dog and call it Teddy, it'll be fun.

I got this book just to stare at Ruby’s cloud of hair. No kidding, look at those cute messy curls crowing her. The book is fairly simple yet wonderful. Ruby is a young girl who loves to be curious and is always trying to learn something new. She’s happy, she’s playful and has a great imagination.
The book focuses more on illustrations (which are too good) and gives an important message about being curious and adventurous. Focus on today and do what makes you happy. It also shows the various options kids can choose when they grow up. And until then, they can be everything from an astronaut to a chef.
I received an ARC from NetGalley, Penguin Random House Canada, and Tundra Books and am voluntarily leaving a review.

First of all, Thank you very much to NetGalley for permitting my access to an ARC of this book. This does not influence my opinion on the content in any way.

And yes, we all need some cute, colorful content these days, so why not reading a Children’s Book?

To begin with, the illustrations are so beautiful, colorful, and inevitably attracted my attention a lot. Following Ruby’s character introduced me to her curiosity and growing aspirations. Ruby’s hobbies remind me of things I loved doing as a child, like making "potions" by mixing liquids 😅.

Discovering her favorite hobbies along will definitely help you to discuss with the child you’re reading the book with his/her many passions and how they contribute positively to this child’s creativity in other situations and the cuteness of this book will encourage readers (children and adults alike) to embrace what they love doing and what sparks joy.

Creativity deserves more praise!

What a cute picture book. "This Is Ruby" shows kids the awesome abilities we can do on any ordinary day. We can be explorers. We can be astronauts. We can invent. We can create. I love this theme, and am very happy to see new inspiring books being published to help kids realize their dreams!!

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in return for an honest opinion.

Such a sweet book about a fun, inquisitive girl. Colorful illustrations that will grab any child's eye. I love how Ruby is so inventive. She's creating a potion that tastes like clouds and a book that dog's can read. Ruby and her dog, Teddy, are adorable.

I'd love this to add to my classroom collection. This was a lovely eBook which shows so many ways that children's imaginative play can show that they can grow up to do any job they want, it's all about creativity and endless possibilities. Absolutely great, wish it was longer.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. It will be released May 25, 2021 by Tundra Books. Preorder it for your libraries.

Remember Sadie? This is her friend, Ruby, another creative strong girl who is interested in all things STEM!

Ruby is never bored. This curious, creative, little girl is an explorer, an inventor, and a time traveller. She likes to watch things grow and take things apart to figure out how they work.

She isn't sure what she wants to be when she grows up, but knows her options are endless. These days she is contemplating being an animal conservationist, a doctor, an engineer, or an astronaut. With Teddy, her best friend, she might even become an archaeologist.

Ruby has already accomplished many things. She made a book of smells for animals and others who can't read words. She created a potion that tastes like clouds. She even invented a time machine.

There is so much to love about this book. I liked the bits of humour, especially when Ruby goes back in time to visit the dinosaurs, and then even farther back to when her parents met. I like that her parents may or may not be same sex. I like that Ruby is Black. Energy and joy fill these pages in both words and images.

Alea Marley's illustrations are glorious explosions of colour. Her favourite medium is chunky pencils, watercolour crayons, and digital brushes.

I like everything about this book. The bar is set high, with a book such as this. And it’s the little things that count just as much as the big things.
I like that childhood photographs are used instead of adult photos or no photos at all of the author and illustrator, at the back flap of the book; they help to make a connection. I also like the background of Ruby on the front flap of the book.
I like how we are introduced to Ruby as she walks into the room, as perhaps a teacher may do with a new student at school. I laughed at the ‘dinosaurs and way way back’ part of the story. A subject that children often laugh about with parents.

If i have to say in one sentence what this book is about - it’s about opening your eyes to all possibilities, being curious about everything by trying things and also living in the moment. And i love the fact that it shows children so many possibilities, it communicates that one child can achieve anything they want to if they put fun, imagination and work into it. This book (maybe with the help of their parents) will get them wondering how STEM subjects are connected with their everyday play.

Alea Marley’s illustrations are gorgeous: professionally executed, colourful, textural and smile inducing. There is so much to make me smile about them. So imaginative and fun. For instance, I think that Ruby’s idea for her journeying through time is so imaginative and just the thing a child could come up with themselves.
Ruby is so sweet and Teddy is a fab companion and beautifully drawn (is he wearing a hat or?)

I have not read ‘This is Sadie’, but i will definitely seek out a copy now.

Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the opportunity of reading an ARC of this book.

Title: This is Ruby
Author: Sara O’Leary
Illustrator: Alex Marley
Genre: Children’s Book
Pages: 32
Publication Date: 5/25/2021

This is Ruby is a delightful children’s book featuring a black main character named Ruby and her dog, Teddy. Ruby is incredibly curious and spends a lot of time thinking about what she wants to do when she grows up. She also starts implementing many of her ideas like a book that you can read via smell and a time machine.

The illustrations are gorgeous with rich vibrant colors as she explores possible careers in the STEM field. The story is simple – targeted at ages 3 to 7. Most pages have a single sentence of text and lean on pictures. I appreciated that the text several times tries to engage the young reader by asking them questions.

What I loved the most about this book is the representation. Ruby is depicted as smart and interested in science-based careers. She shows creativity and an adventurous spirit throughout the book. Ruby is also depicted with her natural kinky hair. As black women/girls are often criticized for their natural hair, it was refreshing to see Ruby depicted with natural hair and being interested in STEM.

The only con I see is that I feel like the book covered too much content – both careers and a time machine. I still think the book is wonderful as is – but do wish there was more focus on one element or the other. (Maybe a second book could focus on the omitted item.)

I will definitely plan to buy this book for my four-year-old nephew and encourage you to as well!

A common activity foisted upon kids of all ages is the "what do you want to be when you grow up?" game. On the one hand, it's a fun way to challenge kids to think about the future and focus their learning. On the other hand, there's not much point in pressing 5-year-olds to choose a career because it not only turns up loads of unrealistic nonsense but also puts pressure on kids to just pick one thing. What I love about the book, This Is Ruby, is that the child in the book is not contained. She can be girly. She can be smart, She can be creative. She can be tough. She is all of those things and more, and she has no reason to fit into anyone's stereotype. Childhood is meant to be a safe place to discover and experiment, which is why kids are so good at playing. I'll be happy to share this book with my younger students and work in opportunities for them to explore the many facets of who they are and can be.
(for the record, when I was 5, I wanted to be a ballerina. I'm glad I wasn't forced into that life, because I'm much happier as a book editor and reviewer than I would have ever been as a dancer)

This is Ruby follows Ruby, a curious and extremely loveable little girl. She loves to experiment and explore new ideas.

What a cute story! These illustrations are everything! This book is perfect for young children. Through simple and sweet narration and absolutely gorgeous and colorful illustrations, we follow Ruby and all her big dreams for the future. I really loved Ruby and her pup, Teddy. They were fantastic. Even teens and adults will connect to this loveable main character; her fun potion-making and other adventures remind me of when I was younger and would mash up acorns and leaves with my little sister and make our own little potions — though ours looked nothing like her colorful creations! Our "excavations" included digging up our backyard (sorry mom) until we hit roots, convinced we had discovered dinosaur bones.

This book is one for everyone. It does a lovely job of encouraging curiosity, exploration, and dreaming big! Go women in STEM!

~ Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada / Tundra Books for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review ~

"This is Ruby" was a delight to read, both narratively and visually. I've always believed the curiosity of children should be encouraged, and that's entirely what this book is about, as it follows Ruby, our charming protagonist, and all of the wonderful things in the world that intrigue her. The written material is fast-paced and engaging, while the drawings are bright and cute. "This is Ruby" really was a reminder of how fun it can be to be a kid sometimes. I can't wait to harass all of my friends with kids to check this book out. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I included it in my "Stars of the Month" on my Instagram page, The Story Book Lady from Oz, even before I'd written this review because I didn't want to leave it out. Definitely would recommend to anyone looking to liven up story time.

Fantastic story and illustrations in picture book about curiosity and imagination. Ruby uses her imagination to make, explore, and predict what she might one day become. Rich vocabulary and questions throughout the book will invite fun and mean meaningful conversations in a classroom or at home. This is an attractive and diverse book with its main character, a child who isn't white and isn't gender stereotypes. And when she talks about her parent's meeting, you see a picture of two women.

Research shows that diversity in picture books, not only in the faces kids see on the page, but also how girls, boys, and families are represented to develop anti-racism, anti-homophobia, and more in future generations.

I applaud this author and illustrator team in bringing kids this wonderful picture book. We need a lot more like it!

I received an eARC of this book in return for an honest review; thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity.

This book is a lovely romp through an imaginative child’s mind, a sort of day in the life which introduces you to a character named Ruby.

It was a very fun read with my toddler, great for people who are fans of Oliver Jeffers and Andrea Beaty’s The Questioners series.

At times the story seemed a bit non-linear, but if taken as just a simple character exploration perhaps as part of a larger series about other children it could be even more enjoyable.

I liked that occasionally paused and asked the reader questions of the cadence seemed inconsistent based on the pacing of the book.

Overall a fun quick read and plenty of detail in the illustrations to make it worth several rereads.

After reading this book, I really wanna hang out with Ruby. She's inventive, curious, and enthusiastic in her pursuits, and she's an inspirational kid, reminding her peers they can be whatever they want when they grow up, and that there's always fun to be had. I loved her creativity, and I think kids will enjoy getting to know her. She's got some really fun decorating ideas that I might have to borrow too! And oh my! the illustrations are gorgeous! So bright, colorful, and full of interesting details to look at and get inspiration from (see my comment on decorating ideas above)! Parents will appreciate this too- there's humor in this that only adults will appreciate, such as Ruby traveling back in time to see what dinosaurs really looked like, then going back even further to the day her parents met. This book is great fun, and I think kids will love it.

This is Ruby, and Ruby is adorable! The illustrations beautifully depict the delightful story of an imaginative little girl who makes the most of her days. She's curious and innovative. Ruby merges science and imagination and creativity and nature to enjoy everyday to the fullest and to contemplate what she may want to do in the future. The author uses questions to engage the reader and spur conversations with parents or teachers.

MAJOR praise for the illustrator! The artwork is delightful, and instantly evokes a smile. The artwork glows and abounds in cuteness! Bring on the Caldecott nomination.

This is a perfect book for a play advocate like me. It shows all the wonderful places your imagination can take you and the many things that play may or may not lead to when you are a grown. It also relishes living in the moment. Another aspect I like about this book are the interactive elements promoting discussion between parent/teacher and child. It' can be difficult to find books with children of diverse cultures, race and ability that are not specifically about that difference - Ruby does this perfectly.
There isn't really a story to the book but it has a good message and would be a valuable addition to my diverse library of books.

Ruby rocks! Readers will see themselves as Ruby uses her imagination and creativity every day to do . . . well, everything. She has big plans as she and her best dog friend Teddy do it all. Throughout, the reader is asked questions such as, “What kind of things are you curious about?” The illustrations by Alea Marley are bright and fun. Cardboard creations figure prominently (a personal favorite of mine!). This will be a favorite of my students. Thank you Netgalley for providing a digital ARC for review.

Ruby is an imaginative, creative, and unique child, who invites the young reader into her world for a day. Ruby has all kinds of thoughts and hopes and dreams , and she asks the reader questions about their thoughts and hopes and dreams. This interaction is what sets this picture book apart from others. Add in colorful fun illustrations and you have a book perfect for reading aloud to the young children in your life.

I like this book because it promotes motivation and encouragement to be curious and excited about learning all the possibilities of life!

So good! I should have guessed it is the same author as "This is Sadie". Whereas that story is about a child with a big imagination who disappears into books, dreams up stories, and fills her life with her own magic, this is a story about a child with endless curiosity who investigates, invents, engineers... and fills her life with her own magic. Sure, it's a great STEAM book/you-can-be-anything book, but with a uniquely warm, dreamy glow (thanks in no small part to the incredible illustrations).

What a wonderful story centered around STEM activities in a fun simple way that kids will understand. Ruby finds ways to bring in engineering, science, and math in her every day imagination. Not just her but her best doggy pal Bear.

My favorite page was when she made her own time machine and seemed to go even farther back than the dinosaurs to see when her parents met. I loved that detail because it perfectly portrayed how little minds grasp time when it comes to their parents. The illustrations are incredible with beautiful bursts of color. The kaleidoscope page is gorgeous *chefs kiss*

Ruby has many ideas of what she wants to be when she grows up. She is inquisitive about the world around her and about the child reading the book and spending the day with her. A great book for kids and parents to read together and for kids to answer the questions Ruby asks. Plus that dog illustration is just too adorable.

This is Ruby by Sara O'Leary and Alea Marley is an invitation into Ruby's whimsical world. The vibrant illustrations made me feel welcomed into Ruby's adventures. There is never a boring day in Ruby's world. She is always up for trying new things and invites the reader to come along. There was one part that was confusing in regards to her parents and if they met before dinosaurs. - LOL. Otherwise, the story had a wonderful rhythm to it. I am sure Ruby will be a hit in many homes.

I liked the way this book takes the tone of explaining Ruby, showing her room and what she likes to do. Ruby’s interests connect to different future jobs in a cute way. I loved the illustrations and diversity!

Questions sprinkled through the story make good discussion topics for educators. The theme of being curious and being whatever you want to be was a bit too direct for me at the end, but a good message for kids.
