The young girl pushes against the backseat of the family sedan, fighting to free herself from the crude ties restricting her hands and feet. As the car speeds toward the edge of town, she looks back at her family home, and watches in horror as it suddenly explodes in a mass of flames. Trembling with fear, she turns toward the driver and hears only laughter. She knows that the worst is yet to come...
Detective Jenna Alton surveys the charred remains of the large suburban home, stopping to pause at the three lifeless bodies of the Woods family. Jenna knows she's looking for a serial killer, but her priority is finding the missing teenage daughter last seen on the night of the inferno.
Days later, Sophie Woods's body is discovered floating in a shallow pool of crystal-clear water - known locally as Dead Man's Drop - but Jenna still doesn't know who would target the quiet family in such a brutal attack.
Delving into the family's past, she makes a shocking discovery - a link between the killer and someone connected to her deputy David Kane. If Jenna is right and the killer is back and seeking revenge, then she must act fast to keep her deputy safe.
When another girl is taken, Jenna and David follow the trail into a network of underground caves on the outskirts of town. With little time before the killer claims his next victim, they race into the pitch-black tunnels, unsure whether they have just walked into the killer's trap. Can they find the girl in time and escape the caves without the killer chasing them down?
Promises in the Dark is the tenth instalment in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Sheriff David Kane series, set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, and once again Hood has surpassed all expectations. It's uncharacteristically quiet in Black Rock Falls for the authorities but soon the peace is shattered. In nearby Aspen Grove, Louan, 15-year-old Sophie Wood is in shock when a gunman enters her family home and holds a gun to her father’s head. Dressed head to toe in black and wearing a balaclava, he knocks both her parents unconscious before tying them up along with her trembling five-year-old sister, Jody, and kicks over a can of gas accelerant so it seeps across the room. Sophie is then kidnapped and as they drive away the house bursts into flames before exploding. FBI Special Agent and behavioural analyst Jo Wells receives a call from Louan's Sheriff Tom Crenshaw to inform her that the explosion had been deemed a homicide by ME and tech expert Shane Wolfe. Ex Navy-seal Ty Carter, Wells and bomb-sniffing Doberman Zorro leave for the scene in a chopper. When the wiring in the phone detonator found in the house has the same distinctive signature of three bombs that exploded in DC years earlier, killing Kane's wife Annie, all hell breaks loose.
The search for missing teen Sophie comes to an end when her naked body is found decomposing in one of the local lakes around Stanton Forest and it doesn't take long for another bombing and abduction to occur. As body after body drops, can the team work together to apprehend this vicious serial killer, bomber and rapist? This is yet another riveting, compulsive and hard-hitting procedural from the pen of Hood. It is action-packed from the get-go; you're barely given a moment to breathe and there is never a dull moment. It's exciting, engrossing, and I loved that the dogs were highlighted as being of absolute importance to the case. Though told primarily from the investigators perspective there are fascinating and demented chapters from the killer. We learn more about the main characters and their struggles and are even provided with some backstory on the peripheral cast members, which added to the plot rather than detracting from it. It's a high-octane race against time to catch a crazed serial killer and the twists and turns were plentiful. It's palpably tense and the perpetrator is not revealed until the very end. The closing scenes top it all off with a heart-thumping conclusion. Highly recommended.
Promise in the Dark is book 10 in the Kane and Alton series and it is explosive...literarily . If you haven’t worked out by now, Black Rock Falls is a serial killer heaven and book 10 doesn’t let up on that front. I love these characters and the town, but I would not want to visit there!
Things have been a bit quiet n Black Rock Falls, giving Jenna, Dave and Shane some well needed down time. But that is all about to change when they get a call from their friends at the FBI, asking them to work on a case with them. A house explosion that kills a family starts the hunt for the missing daughter. Once they are able to get inside they see that the family were tied up before the bomb went off. It is the beginning of an actioned packed story, full of action on the hunt of a ruthless killer. But what is is motive? Who is killing families and why.? They have to find the answer to stop him.
Once again there is no shortage of bodies and suspense. There is also a personal connection for Dave Kane. A chance for him to find out what happened in his past, something that has haunted him for years.
This series is heating up and keeps getting better. Another 5 star read for this crime and thriller junkie. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.
D.K. Hood lets things smoulder in the latest addition to the Kane and Alton series. The reader is treated to more wonderful narrative and strong story development, both of which have been cornerstones of this police procedural series. When a house fire rages out of control, it’s soon discovered that one of the children is unaccounted for. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team learn that the girl has been kidnapped, though the fire was not a diversion, but a punishment. Now, it’s time to find the kidnapper and get to the root of the issues that led to a family’s death. What follows is a harrowing game to find a killer and determine what has created such a horrifying set of events in a small community. Chilling and yet fire-hot, D.K. Hood does it once more with this novel.
While bound and stuck in the back seat of a vehicle, a teenage girl watches as her home explodes before her. No one else appears to have escaped and she sees all she loves lost in a ball of fire. Turning to the driver in front, Sophie Wood sees someone laughing and cackling, promising that there is more to come. All she can do is pray that she will remain safe.
When Sheriff Jenna Alton arrives on scene, she wonders what led to this horrifying fire at the Wood’s home. Three charred bodies lay in front of her, their lives burnt to a crisp, but one is missing. The body of the teenage Sophie is nowhere to be found. Arson is immediate suspected, meaning that there is a a killer out there who appears to have Sophie in their clutches, Alton knows that this will be the team’s primary focus, though there is a great deal to assess.
When Sophie’s body is discovered a few days later in the water, Sheriff Alton knows that this killer is out to play a deadly game. There is a plan and the teenage angle plays into it. When Sheriff Alton delves a little deeper into the lives of the family, she finds a link between the suspected killer and her own Deputy Dave Kane. Now, armed with the intel, she must not only be on the look out for the killer, but also try to ensure Kane does not get pulled in to the middle of it all, as well as the safety of his being in Black Rock Falls.
After another teenage girl is taken, it shows a connection to the larger plan and solidifies just what the killer has been doing. It takes a trip to a small community, where outsiders are not welcome and women must know their place, to solidify that something is amiss. These are dangerous people and even Dave Kane cannot outsmart them for too long. Working every angle and trying to stay one step ahead, Sheriff Alton will have to act swiftly to prevent more deaths and further emotional harm. A great story that has all the elements for success.
D.K. Hood has kept up her high quality work with this series, pulling the reader into the middle of a great story that has more to offer than meets the eye. I loved the strong narrative approach and how the reader becomes part of the investigation. The momentum of the piece is guided well and provides the reader with something on which they can connect, while remaining a conscious overseer of all that is taking place. The series prides itself on this quick storytelling and Hood does not disappoint.
Character development is key to keeping the story strong, with Hood also eager to add depth to her characters and some additional means of connecting them all together. While she has added some strong secondary characters, the core Alton and Kane are still evolving, both as individuals and a. team. I am eager to see what is to come and how it will all work out, as there is a great deal of storyline that teases at something Kane-Alton related. We have yet to see the spark many are expecting. I surmise Hood has a plan and patience is key.
The series has successes with strong plot lines and well-paced storylines, all of which keep the reader in the middle of the action. D.K. Hood has fostered a great connection with her readers and the characters, providing entertainment at every page flip. The stories keep delving deeper into the world of serial killers, but also the growth of the town and the characters who inhabit Black Rock Falls and environs. I am always eager to read more of this series, which appears to be branching out and getting even better the more books are added, which is a definite rarity in the genre.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for never shirking on great reads full of exciting possibilities.
There was something about Aunt Betty’s Café that soothed even the roughest day, like sitting in your grandma’s kitchen and waiting for the cookies to come out the oven.
My Review:
I am seriously slacking and horribly uninformed as this was book #10 in a series and my first time picking up one of D.K. Hood’s eleven books. It was a nonstop whirligig of high voltage action and the author’s writing slotted me right in the midst of it. I am exhausted and feel like I’ve been in a marathon while digging through ashes, performing autopsies, climbing mountains, jumping out of helicopters, dodging bullets, skidding on ice, crawling through spooky caves, and running after dogs while chasing an elusive psychopath arsonist who was also a murdering rapist. Unholy smokes, he was definitely a multitasking fiend, yet he still had time and energy to compose blog posts which were brilliant in their double meanings. Despite his unethical and disturbing proclivities, I had to stop to admire his wry phrasing as well as his devotion to his work ethic.
A house explodes killing the parents and one of their daughters. But their other twelve year old daughter is missing. This case has Jenna and Dave back working with the FBI. But this case is a little close to the bone for Dave.
Another action packed and thrilling read. I think this is the est book in the series so far. The house explosion takes place in the neighbouring town of Louan and the local Sheriff calls in the FBI. Jo Wells and Ty Carter are back and they call in the assistance of ME Shane Wolfe. It's not long before Jenna and Dave are involved as another house fire and a child is missing. This is a fast paced and gripping read. This is one of the best police procedural series that I've read. Fantastic read.
I would like to thank #NetGalley, #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A lot going on and I was wrong each time I thought I had it figured out. Very good series that keeps me interested in the characters. Glad to see Kane getting answers finally.
The SUV explodes in a ball of fire, killing three people of the Woods family inside. The surviving teenage daughter watches from inside another care, her hands and feet are bound. The driver only laughs.
Days later, Sophie Wood's body is found in a pool of water, better known as Dead Man's Drop.
When Detective Jenna Alton and her Deputy David Kane investigate, they find nothing at the scene to point a finger at anyone who could possibly be responsible.
Investigating the family's past, Alton finds a link between the killer and someone connected to her deputy. If Alton is right, then Kane is in danger ... and it's much closer than they think.
And then another girl is taken ....
Full of suspense, forensic knowledge, and detail to safety, this is well-written with characters that stand out. There are a few twists and turns and a short visit to Kane's past. The conclusion comes fast and furious and is completely surprising.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
In the 10th book in Detective Kane and Sheriff Alton’s book they, along with the FBI agents, are trying to find a killer who has exploded a house killing the parents and one of their daughters. With the other twelve year old daughter is missing the team of Kane and Alton along with the FBI agents need to find her before the killer does.
Promises in the dark is a nonstop action packed thriller by D.K.Hood. Another 5 star read for me and cannot wait to read the next one in the series.
I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
Promises in the Dark by D.K. Hood is the 10th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Former DEA, Jenna Alton is now the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana. Her past is a secret. Deputy David Kane's background is also a secret. He was a Special Forces sharpshooter, and a bodyguard to the President. Then there is Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe, who is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
A young girl is kidnapped, and as she watches, her kidnapper blows up her house, with her parents and sister still inside.
Although it is outside of Jenna's jurisdiction, FBI Agents Jo and Carter are investigating the bombing, and ask for Jenna's assistance. Although the girl is found dead, Jenna and Dave remain with the case. This bomber has a direct link to Dave, and Jenna fears for her Deputy.
When another girl is taken, the trail leads to an underground network of caves just outside of town.
My Opinions:
I was pleased to again see Jo and Carter from the FBI, although I cannot warm up to Carter. This book has not increased my love for him. However, I love Jo.
It was interesting having a little more insight into Dave's background. I like the way the author shows the sensitive sides of most characters in addition to their strengths.
As always, there was a lot of action, and although I deduced the identity of the perpetrator early on, there were enough other suspects to keep me interested in their stories. The plot was great, and I have to say that this was probably the best in this series so far.
I recommend reading the books in order, as backgrounds are important.

Nothing can get my pulse racing like a case in Black Rock Falls. Jenna & Kane always seem to have the meanest SOB terrorizing their town & dropping victims left, right & center. This murderer though is special. He may be connected to a case related to Kane making it personal for him. I loved every moment of this highly addictive book & found it difficult to keep it down. There were some chapters that had me turning the pages like crazy. Having read all the previous books in the series I've come to like all of them & it was absolutely nerve wracking to see a few of them face danger & death up so close. Offcourse that also aldded to the thrill of reading. D.K. Hood's villains always surpass the previous in brutality & the one in this book was no different. Its always fascinating to see Alton, Kane & Wolfe working the case to see it to its end. It got even better with FBI agents Jo & Carter. Even with the many characters in the book it wasn't difficult to keep up with the storyline. The author, Hood sets in each book in such an atmospheric way - its riveting & gives me the chills. Always! With the sheer number of deviants targeting this idyllic small town since book #1 I know it is a statistical anomaly but somehow with the compelling storylines written by D.K.Hood i always fall hook, line & sinker. I can't wait to next & hope to catch more of the heebis jeebies in the next book with Alton & Kane. I know this is one series that is very difficult to dissapoint.
Thank you, NetGalley, Bookouture & D.K.Hood for an arc!
Black Rock Falls rocks!! I know, I know it was poor alliteration. But the sheriff and her team really uplifted the book and made author D. K. Hood’s story come alive.
I knew that I should have said it the other way around. But there was something so real about Sheriff Jenna and Deputy Kane that it felt that they had a life of their own and were indeed leading the investigation in the real world rather than in the dark realms of the author’s brain.
Book 10 and Kane would get a shock to know some truths from his past when they were called to assist the FBI after a bomb blast and a missing teen. It was fun to see Jenna and Kane working with the new members, this time much closely. A little friction between them was realistically written.
The story had its twists, and reveal was a shocker. What I especially liked was the banter between Dave and Jenna, though their attraction which had arisen in earlier books was missing. Suspense and race against time was subtly built and like the other books, the killer did hit close to home when the entire team rose to fight as one.
Overall, a great police procedural, just as expected from this author.
This book opens with a bang and really doesn’t stop until the end. After the opening pages with the man driving away with a young girl in the back seat of his car, then she hears the explosion of here home you the reader know you are in for a ride. Really though it only gets better. For after that it is not Jenna and Dave, but Jo and Cater the new team and they call in Wolfe. Jenna and Dave well at least Dave is bored and soon they are called in to help Jo and Carter. When later it is discovered that who was thought to be the D.C. bomber who killed Dave’s wife and changed his life forever. Was not the person, no that person they think or at least Carter thinks is the man who destroyed this family’s home and took the young girl. Dave goes into a metal funk turning white and Jenna helps to say he gets migraines at times. He doesn’t even know how Carter got some of the information he has for it was to be classified way above his pay grade. Once the girl is found at the bottom of the falls this sets off another set of events and throughout this story, they are steps behind the person. You feel like you the reader should know who the person is and will be surprised when you find out. I also thought Carter would make the connection with Kane but never did. You finally get an end to Dave’s past he can bury finally his wife. Maybe, just maybe there might be something with him and Jenna for he did not like Carter sniffing around. Another fantastic story that will keep you wanting to stay up late at night at least I did read this book once you start. Again, all of the characters are good and very much worth the read. I received this book from Netgalley.com I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com
Too long and drawn out. Deals with nuances of a sick psychopath, an important thing to learn as early as possible in life so you can avoid them.
He wondered briefly why he felt nothing when they died, but then he'd mourned the death of his son with outrage, not tears. He shrugged it off. Surely it was a normal reaction not to worry about something he no longer had use for.
Getting raised by a psychopath 💔 damaged me. She dumped me into the residential school at 12 just as she did with anything precious to me. She has no attachment to my daughter either. She had no attachment to her pets, my dad or even God.
The latest installment of this series and wow what a great read.
This series always shows such great interpersonal interactions between the main characters and this book is no different.
Though you see a different side of Kane and one that shows his broken heart as well as how deep his emotions really go.
Kane is more on the edge in this book then I have ever seen him but based on the storyline it doesn't surprise me that he is this close to the edge.
Jenna seems more laid back than normally you see. She is the one who is keeping Kane from going further and ruining the life he has made.
This book was more emotional for me which isn't really easy and I don't know if it's because for the first time ever I wont be taking part in the blogtour for this amazing book or because the story really got to me.
In some ways this feels like a happy ending to the series as all the bad stuff seemed to have come full circle for Kane. I know it's not an end to things but it had a complete ending to me and that makes it all the more emotional.
I truly love Kane as a character he is the ultimate protector. He is big and strong and skilled. He also has trust issues which mKe him perfect to watch Jenna's back.
Jenna wasn't my most favourite in this book she doesn't seem to be her normal self and seems to take more of a backseat in the case.
Wolfe is like normal but you see more of his caring nature and just what he can do. It made it so entertaining especially seeing parts os his past sleeping through.
Jo and Carter were a lot of fun and I think would make excellent characters for a main series as they have so much to offer.
This was spectacular and I just didn't want it to end.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Promises in the Dark, the tenth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of Blackwater Falls, Montana.
The Woods family home in neighbouring Louan is blown up and 15 year old Sophie Woods kidnapped. Jenna and Dave are asked to assist in the investigation and are shattered when links are found to Dave’s past. When Sophie’s body is found and another girl taken they realise that the killer won’t stop unless they catch him/her.
I thoroughly enjoyed Promises in the Dark which is a high octane thriller with plenty of twists and turns. I though the previous novel lacked a little oomph but this is a welcome return to form with tension, action and a well concealed perpetrator. I liked the slow but steady drip of reveals which culminates in an action packed resolution.
The novel is mostly told from the investigative point of view with a few chapters devoted to the killer’s thoughts. I found these latter illuminating in terms of the plot, but basically it’s just another crazy venting about injustice.
It would seem that FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter are to become regular characters in the series. They are welcome additions, bringing even more skills to what is probably the most qualified Sheriff’s department in the country.
Promises in the Dark is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Another fantastic book in the Kane and Alton series. This series just keeps getting better and better. Jo and Carter are called out to a suspected bombing and realise the family were burnt alive in the house but the teenage daughter is missing. It happens just outside Kane and Jenna’s patch but Jo takes them on as FBI consultants as they are familiar with the area and the people. Soon the girls body is found at the bottom of a waterfall and the zip ties on her ankles shows it’s the same man who killed her family. This is a fast paced crime thriller as the killer seems to have a list of people to target and is working his way through them. Poor Wolfe doesn’t know which way to turn. When Carter links the bombs to the DC bomber, Kane is speechless. He’s wanted to face Annie’s killer for some time so he’s determined to catch this one. In a heart racing conclusion, lives at at risk in the mountains and Jenna and Jo know they need to catch this man as he’s taken one of their own. I loved this book and can highly recommend this series for those who haven’t yet discovered it. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I know that for a fact I will use the same words that I always do. This book is awesome, epic, amazing, thrilling. The thing is…well…its all true. This time things get personal and just a little bit too personal for two of our fine deputies of Black Rock Falls. Times are nice and light at the start, we have a tranquil time until one night that the night sky is literally ablaze!
I am not going to say anything about the book because I purposely didn’t read the blurb. I know that if I see D.K. Hood on a book I am reading it regardless. So I went in blind, I didn’t know what experience we would have this time, I just knew like a thrill seeker I would love it. What I will say is that I really wasn’t disappointed. It is a book where no element is boring, through all these words and pages, the tension is relentless. Lives are in danger and the only way to survive is to read, read as if your life depended on it….because someone life does.
My teeth were set on edge, my nerves were shot, my tears were a bit leaky yet I will go back again and again to Black Rock Falls, to Kane, Alton, Wolfe Carter and Jo. I always moan, but never enough Rowley, he is so lovely I just smile when is on the page.
The only thing I will mention about the book is the Whispering Caves, the stories that Atothi and his Grandad told the team were creepy. The darkness in the caves when the lights go out has a life of its own. It is just as menacing as the villain in the book, if not more so. Yes, the villain is terrifying but with them, you always have the chance to survive, to escape. In the caves, you have little chance as we find out, to me that is more terrifying.
This was a darker story than most but it was a story with closure and not necessarily the closure we expected but it was one that we needed. Maybe the next book will be lighter? Haha, who are we kidding, this is Ms Hood, she will have yet another dark and twisty tale for us to unravel. This series just gets stronger and stronger. I have loved each and every book in this series, I feel like I have grown with Jenna and Dave. We watch them become completely whole, we know their secrets, their darkness but the light have broken through and they are complete.
I can’t wait for the next instalment and I hear it’s not too long to wait and with another character being added to the team, I know I for one is excited about that!
This 10th installment in the crime thriller series featuring Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane has them chasing down a murderous pyro psychopath.
Oh my goodness, the Black Rock Falls area of Montana has yet another serial killer on a rampage. To be honest, it is starting to strain credulity that this many crazies find that area and commit so many awful crimes. In this case, the crimes involve bombs and fire -- along with kidnapping and a host of other deviant behaviors. I think the tipping point for me was the connection between what was happening in Black Rock Falls to what happened in DC years ago to Kane and his wife, Annie. NO SPOILERS.
Despite having read this series from the start, I have never really liked Jenna and finally admit that I likely never will. I just find her too unbelievable in her role; her attitude and behavior irritates me. Although there was a lot of good forensic detail and long descriptions of everything involved in the murder and arson, I had guessed most everything about the outcome and the perpetrator quite early. I think the motivation explaining all these crimes was a bit of a stretch, but I can see by other reviews that no one else has any issues with it.
So why do I keep reading the series despite my issues? I like to finish what I start and I figure this can't go on much longer but who knows. Surely it's about time for a consummation of the Kane and Alton relationship? We will have to wait and see as book #11 should be out soon.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.
This is the tenth book in the Kane and Alton series.
Wow, what a page-turner this was! When a family is found blown up and one daughter missing, Kane, Alton, Wolfe and the team dive into action. We get to see the bad guy's viewpoint throughout the story making this even more creepy since we have no idea to his identity.
Kane is struggling with his wife's murder since many of the details fit to the events of her death. He doesn't exactly go off the deep end but this entire case tests him.
I always enjoy these police procedural, detective fiction novels. The stories never seem to get old. Can't wait for book 11!
If you love shows like Midsomer Murders of British mysteries, this is definitely your cup of tea!
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping book
oh my word, i love this series being back in the world of kane and alton and man this book is gruesome and gripping....
a family held hostage but when kane and alton arrives there is nothing left of the scene, it has been totalled, 3 dead body remain with evidence of zip ties around their ankles
wolfe has his work cut out for him and before long jo and carter join in the hunt for the murderer who seems to have links with bombing in dc....
oh my word this book...its nasty in places but oh sooo good and will keep you reading right to the end...oh that last chapter had me in tears...
cant wait for the next book in this brilliant series...
Yet another complicated and well written police procedural involving a mad bomber/possible serial killer.
This book could be read as a stand alone, as the author always gives a brief character background as she moves through the early chapters. I'm reading this series in order, and while our H/h are best friends, there's no romance. But I'm ever hopeful. There are gruesome murder scenes, so be aware of that.
Also, a happy and astonished dance! This time, I made a wild assumption and actually guessed who the UNSUB was! Early! 😍 There are twists and red herrings and lots of action.
Promises in the Dark by D.K Hood is the tenth book in this author's Detectives Kane and Alton series. This is another edge-of-your-seat nail-biter with a seriously sick serial killer. This time Detectives Alton and Kane join on the case of FBI agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter. They are desperate and working non-stop to find and stop a serial killer who sets bombs which kill families restrained by him in their homes. Plus the sicko kidnaps and rapes their teenage female family members. The four work tirelessly to track down this madman. I totally enjoyed following along on their investigation. It's always a wild ride investigating serial killers with Jenna Alton and Dave Kane.
Number 10 in the Kane & Alton series and I honestly think this is the best one yet. What a rollercoaster of a read. The main and sub plots really collide here and the pace never lets up. Three or four suspects are identified with two prominently and it’s a race against time to get enough evidence to charge them. Brilliant characters that feel like you know them personally. Nice to see the newer characters in the series Jo & Carter having bigger roles this time but the pièce de résistance has to be the unveiling of the villain. A brilliant addition to this excellent series
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced copy of the latest story set in and around Black Rock Falls. This series gets better and better and this latest takes you on one helluva roller coaster of emotions. The action never lets up from the first page to the last. You are immediately engaged in the story and D K Hood has a great ability to literally drag you into the action. I cannot wait for the next in this fantastic series. Totally gripping and a real page turner of a book. 5 stars all the way.
First off I want to say a big thank you to thank Bookouture for inviting me to join the blog tour for this book as well as letting me read and review .And for letting me continue on with this series .And a big thanks to NetGalley as well. Because for one Bookouture is one of my all time favorite publishers for thrillers and second as soon as I saw that they had announced this book on their facebook page Bookoutre Anonymous I knew I was going to request it, even though I've only read so far one book from this series , that one book made me hooked on this series, and other thing is I love reading about 2 of my all time favorite characters in any series and that's Kane and Alton . Plus I love how their town always seems to be a heaven for series killers , and the way the author writes about the town makes it sound like its a nice place but not a place I would want to either live or visit. For me this series is also great because I can get lost in the story and set back and just read .
This is book #10 of the Kane and Alton series. It can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading the series in order for better understanding of the characters backstories. We are back in the serial killer capital of America, Black Rock Falls, and surprisingly it’s been a quiet few month for Sheriff Jenna Alton, Deputy Dave Kane and Medical Examiner Shane Wolfe. We shouldn’t talk too loud though, as when a fireball rips through a house in a nearby town and the occupants are found dead in the kitchen, the FBI are sent to investigate. We again meet Special Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter, who were in the previous book, and they call upon the Sheriff’s team for their help and local knowledge.
The storyline is fast paced and full of action, just as I would expect from this author!! I love this series and have read every single book, and the books are all just as gripping as the one before. I knew once I’d started reading it, I wouldn’t be able to put it down until it was finished!! It was great to have this book focus more on my favourite character, Dave Kane. Whilst, if you have read the other books of the series, you know Kane’s background, we get to delve a little deeper! It was heart-breaking to see find out some secrets which he had been keeping, yet exciting to see if they could all work out who was involved in his wife’s murder. The relationship between the Sheriff’s team again was fantastic, but I have to admit there is something about Special Agent Ty Carter which I can’t quite put my finger on!! Hopefully, he will be in future books and I’ll be able to learn to love him as much as I do the other characters!! You certainly can’t deny the relationship he has with his dog Zorro is something else though, and it was great for the two dogs, Zorro and Duke to get some of the action again!
The book began strong, with the killer striking the Woods family, and this continued throughout the book with the body count rising! Dare I say it, the author is fantastic at thinking of ways a person can be killed, and if the day job ever dries up at least she knows she will always have a job as a professional killer!! The killer in this book specialised in fire, drones and explosives and it certainly sets your heart racing during these nail-biting scenes, particularly where the Sheriff and her team are involved!!
As usual, you are kept guessing as to who the killer is, and there are plenty of suspects to ponder over. I have to say I particularly found the character Roger Suffolk super creepy and felt the same apprehension that Sheriff Alton did every time he appeared! The supporting characters are superb and are written absolutely perfectly into their individual roles, whether being a ‘goodie’ or a ‘baddie’!! I did have an idea as to who the killer may have been quite early on in the storyline, but it certainly didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book. The reveal of who and why is held back until very close to the end, and the author again manages to drop the surprise onto you with lots of action and suspense at just the right time!
This book has very cleverly tied up some loose ends which have been following the characters throughout the previous books, but also in turn has opened up some new storylines for future books. I loved the ending, particularly for Deputy Rowley, yet a little voice kept telling me “c’mon, this is Black Rock Falls…will we ever get a happy ending?!!!” I can’t wait to read the next book to find out if I’m proved wrong!! Filled to the brim with action and suspense, this book will have you reading into the early hours!! Brilliant read, would definitely recommend!!
I’ve read and loved all the books in the series so far and loved them all so I was really looking forward to reading Promises In The Dark and boy was it worth waiting for !!!! I find D.K Hood’s books just get darker and grittier and more thrilling as the series goes on snd this was definitely the most one yet that ticked all of those boxes !!! There’s a serial killer on the loose targeting families and young girls. Sheriff Alton, detective Kane and the team have their wok cut out to try to catch the killer before he strikes again This is my absolute favourite of the series and kept me on the edge of my seat and many heart pounding moments throughout and especially when the investigation led the team into the whispering caves! It was also great to see Carter and his canine helper Zorro and FBI profiler Jo back helping the team again!
Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and D.K Hood for the Arc of Dark Promises my review is honest and unbiased in anyway.
I have spent some time trying to figure out which book to pick as my 100th book of the year. When I saw Promises In The Dark pop up on NetGalley, I knew my choice had been made for me. This series has quickly become one of my favorites thanks to the dynamic between Kane and Alton (not to mention the rest of their amazing team).
This book took our favorite duo on another wild adventure. The only difference, this time Kane was going after some revenge for his past life. The balance between being Kane and the man he used to be is difficult on an easy day, let alone one when he’s bombarded with memories of his wife and the day she died. But thanks to his friends by his side, he is able to keep his head in the game at the time when it matters the most.
I can’t wait to see what happens next for Kane and Alton.
I have read all the books in the series and each one has kept me gripped. I love the inclusion of Jo and Carter to the story. I keep thinking that every time I start reading one of DK's books that this time I'll guess who the murderer is but while I have come close, I have yet to get it completely right.. My only disappointment was that the book ended and now I have to wait (im) patiently for book 11.
TRIPLE WOW!!! Tenth book in this amazing, fabulous series and IMO, the best one yet. I loved the way the Author tied up events we read about in previous books. How did she do that? Freaking genius! Can I say once more I did not see the ending coming. Please let us have book 11 very soon. Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.
