Life begins to settle down for Claire after her horrific first year in Paris. Her career as the exclusive private investigator for the Paris expat community continues to thrive when the abusive boyfriend of her au pair is killed and the au pair is arrested for the crime. Determined to free the girl, Claire pushes through French red tape, double-dealing bureaucrats and a killer who is just as determined to stop her uncovering the truth—no matter the cost.
This book is a clean read: no graphic violence, sex or strong language
I’ve read this whole series and every time I do, I feel like I’m re connecting with an old friend. Granted, an old friend who lives a glamorous and dangerous life in Paris. Love the characters, the stories and the settings. Ive already pre- ordered the next one.
When I first started reading the premier trilogy, I was hooked and immediately bought the following books, even did a pre-release buy for the next two items. It drags you in like a tv-series
So glad to get back to this series (this is #5 in the American in Paris mystery series). Claire Baskerville is an odd sort of heroine, 63, living in an inherited apartment in Paris, and the caretaker of her deceased husband's child Robbie now about 18 months old (and Izzy her adorable French Bulldog).
Claire's au pair Gigi was arrested and charged with pushing her boyfriend off the Eiffel Tower. Claire was determined to prove her innocence. The story kept me on the edge of my seat. Claire was in danger because of her investigation (she does put herself in too many risky situations!). Then she was threatened by her stepfather's widow with actions that could cause her to lose Robbie. Definitely a lot on her plate. A satisfactory outcome seemed impossible but Claire came through in the end! She has acquired a new babysitter for Robbie, Haley, a wonderful character I hope will be around in future stories.
I love this author's mystery series (I've read them all except for the Irish End Games) and eagerly await new episodes in each.
I love this series - completely gripping page turners. I love they are set against a Parisian backdrop. I am just not very fond of the main character Claire Baskerville. That said I am looking foreard to the next in the series.
Claire Baskerville is my kind of main character. She's well over 55yrs old...actually 63yr.old. I like this widowed woman who lives in an inherited Paris apartment. Her apartment is shared by Izzy, Claire's French Bulldog, Robbie, a toddler, and an au pair.
Life keeps getting complicated for Claire. She works as private investigator for the expat community in Paris. Robbie's au pair is arrested for murder. Will Claire solve this case ? Will she lose custody of Robbie? Sometimes Claire is overwhelmed. She's a character thar you will root for time and time again.
The new au pair isn't working out, but that won't be a problem since she's been charged with murder! Nevertheless, Claire Baskerville knows the girl is innocent and feels duty-bound to clear her name.
This book comes in at a solid 4.5 stars for me. Claire Baskerville is now beginning to hit her stride in Paris, and the character goes from strength to strength. Whenever I get my hands on something from this series, I drop everything and start reading. I do so enjoy my time in Paris - even the dangerous parts of it that Claire seems determined to explore with me alongside her.
When Claire's live-in nanny is arrested for the murder of her boyfriend, PI Claire investigates to prove the nanny innocent. I enjoyed the mystery and the other side stories - lots of twists in the tale.
On the other hand, I was confused about 13yo Haley as the new nanny. She seemed to be caring for Robbie a lot more than the 'three full days' and 'two afternoons'. Once she starts working for Claire, she seems to be there almost fulltime (except most nights). Even the agreed hours seem excessive for a 13yo.
This book is written in first person and is a story about a 63-year old widow Claire. She's an ex-pat living in Paris and is a detective -- even though she knows very little French language. She is also raising an 18-month old with au pair GiGi (it's a convolutated story about how she came to be the guardian of the baby). There are a number of complications in Claire's life, with a conflict seemingly around every corner. It's a fairly good book with a lot of food and alcohol consumed.
Private detective Claire is in her 60,s but finds herself raising a toddler from her deceased husband and his mistress. If that isn't bad enough now her au pair is in trouble. The story gets more complicated as more characters are introduced and Claire must sort it all out while being in danger. It probably would be good to read some or all of the earlier books in the series but it is,stand alone enough to be enjoyable.
There’s much to like about expat Claire Baskerville & the complicated things she gets involved in, but again, she risks her life without thinking as she pursues info in the seedy part of Paris. More intrigue over poor Robbie is unresolved at the end of the book. Love this series, but sometimes too much drama.
A tour of Paris. A course in French food and meal choices all linked by a slightly dittzy mature woman. She finds herself in situations that few could imagine with risk and danger to life and limb. Thus unfolds the tale of an American PI in Paris. Fun read !
5th book in this series, this book was a fast-paced read that kept me guessing until the last page. Claire is an American P.I. Living in Paris and this book involves the investigation into the murder of her au pair’s boyfriend. Loved it
Another suspenseful murder mystery with American EX-pat Claire searching for the killer or killers with the body count climbing and her au pair booked on suspicion of murder.
As usual, Susan has left me guessing ! This story is great....kept me on the edge of my seat. I can never guess who did it and the mystery never disappoints. Such interesting characters, too.
Another good story in this series filled with twists and turns that pulls you into the lives of all of the characters. Will Claire ever learn not to rush into situations?
This book was an enjoyable and entertaining murder mystery. The story moved along at a good pace and kept my interest. The author provided detailed character backgrounds and descriptions. An excellent ‘who done it’.
Suspenseful. Good. I was surprised at who the murderer turned out to be, which was a nice change of pace for me. The murderer was mentioned throughout the book, instead of the reader hearing the murderer's name for the first time being in the last chapter before the murderer's reveal.
A mystery set in Paris, someone falls from the Eiffel Tower. It was a bit confusing and not believable but I was reading it while in Paris so it was fun to read about places I was seeing. That’s actually why I chose it.
Found this incredibly boring but read a few chapters in the hope it would get better, it didnt. Constant references to events that must have happened in previous books, A pet hate of mine.
I'm really enjoying this series, especially the running story of Claire Baskerville and her life as an American sleuth in Paris. The mystery part sometimes slogs down a bit for me, but the rest makes up for it.
I truly cannot believe I’m still reading this series, and I can’t wait to get #6! This series hooks you in like a TV show you can’t stop yourself from binging.
