Ghosts are migrating from the west coast across America’s heartland to New York City. These aren’t your garden variety lost souls. These are the spirits of evil men who have been raised from their coffins to follow a man who struck terror in the lives of those who dared seek out the American dream. Lorna Grainger and Tonia Toh have been dealing with these creatures alone since the disbandment of the Council of Women. They are overrun and need help.
Mia, Murphy and PEEPs travel to Virginia City where they hope to stop the flow of energized spirits and find out why they are migrating in the first place. When the ghosts start arming themselves, John Ryan and the federal task force under the command of Whitney Martin enter the equation.
Is this unrest a planned attack on the living or is it just smoke and mirrors?
Meanwhile, back at home, Brian accidentally brings home a ghost…
“Smoke and Mirrors” is the 31st book of the “Haunted Series.”
My idea of a great vacation is a porch swing, view of the water and a pile of books to read. Once upon a time… I wonder if those words spoken to, or read for the first time, were the catalyst for the spark that lit the fire within us. To write and tell a story the way each of us does is a gift and a responsibility. We sometimes toil hours with an idea, or even just one sentence, not knowing if anyone beyond us will ever read our words. We do it for love. The love of bringing to light the world that resides inside our heads. It does not matter if we have a happy ending or a soulful gasp. What matters is that we put these thoughts on paper. So keep writing my friends. Keep taking us to the secret corners of your mind. Be brave. Tempt fate and above all enjoy.
These books are like a drug to me. I always have a reading hangover the next day because I hate putting the book down. You get so much in these books. I never feel like the book is dragging on or taking to long to get to the meat of the story and I never feel let down or disappointed when I finish the book. I have read every book in this series and the Cid books. I laugh, cry and get mad at the characters. I know one day the series is going to end but I pray it is not in the near future.
This book pulled me in so quickly - by the end of the first chapter I knew I would be kissing chores and sleep goodbye. I had to force myself to slow down so I could savor it, and not read straight through for 15 hours. So many of our favorite characters were given a chance to shine, with others presented the opportunity for redemption. There were some new character insights that had me rethinking my view of the chessboard, if you will. There were many times while reading certain scenes that the imagery was so vivid that when I closed my eyes it was like a mini-movie playing out in bright brilliant color. I will be doing a second read this weekend, and I cannot wait!
WOW! I knew going in that Smoke and Mirrors was Alexie Aaron’s longest PEEPs book, so I was prepared for possibly a few days of reading ahead of me. However, I was so totally involved in the story that I found myself completely focused. I loved the new characters (well, many of them), and I was able to reconnect with some old friends...even seeing new sides to some characters I had thought I already knew. I cried at least three times, and yet, I knew that smiles and laughter were not far behind...how could anyone interact with Mia without giggles? I’m so ready for the next adventure, Alexie...keep up the great work!
I love Alexie Aaron's book, regardless of the series, they are all great.
Unfortunately for me this novel was "only" a 4 star, rather than the usual five star. I am not sure why, but this one didn't grab me like they usually do. I think perhaps there was too much going on, so it didn't hold my interest as much as the others have. I would like to see more hauntings, and a little less demons, heaven and hell - but that is purely a personal opinion.
That having been said, it is still a four star! The Haunted series is still amazing, and I will still devour each and every one as they come out!
My daughter and I often have conversations about who the characters would look like if they were ever brought to life on the screen. I have read every peeps book, including the branch offs. I wait not so patiently for each one to be released. Alexi Aaron has a gift for writing that is not matched. I imagine she spends an enormous amount of time doing research as there is so much interesting information in each book. Now I will wait patiently for the next. I laughed and cried through this one. Thankyou Alexie for great reads.
Alexie Aaron continues to write excellent books. I truly love this series. This book was so good, well written, excellent story and amazing characters. Par way through, I had to take a break to read The Secret Garden as it was mentioned in the book (it is my favourite kids book and I read it every few years). Because of this it ttc me longer than usual to finish this book. I highly recommend this book, it is a most excellent read.
I absolutely love these books, they make me laugh and sometimes cry but they always amuse me and make me smile, what's better than that?Especially happy she has portrayed the Native American people in this .Always "thrilled" to get to read them and looking forward to the next exciting one.
Alexis writes so well and with so much detail. She writes her story lines with such expression and heart. When I'm reading any of her books, I feel that I'm an invisible bystander that sees what is truly happening without the possibility of getting hurt, cursed, or possessed. Please continue to write with such feeling.
What can I say another good book, You have love and lots love. A time to you might get teary eyes, and some unanswered questions. All in All a good book.Thank you
Another great read! I was actually teary when Lucifer passed. Not sure about Burt. I wouldn't have minded if he didn't make it! Thank you Alexis Aaron for being the great writer you are.
This is the best series. I love this book. alot of things were settled . I get so involved with the characters I get emotional when something happens. And what the hell and I'm not cussing. There were a lot of surprises in this one. Ok now I can read it again .
I enjoyed this whole series. I don't normally re read any books. But I have read this series 2 times and will read it a 3rd time. Alexie Aaron you and all your characters in your books ROCK. Can't wait for book #32.
It was so good to catch up with everybody again. Thanks for sorting poor Bert out. I do so love living in your universe and I'm always a bit sad when I get towards the end of the book and know I'll have to leave. Now comes the instant pre order and impatient wait for the next visit.
I love this series. This one made me cry. I loved the dialogue..especially the children. I'm looking forward to the next story. Don't miss it! Oh, it helps if you start at the beginning too. I hope there is another "PEEPs" story soon. Can the author write in her sleep?
