When I started this book, I was not sure what to expect. This is not the style I typically pick to read. I am also not a huge reader because of how slow I read, so I quickly lose interest.
If a book is going to hold my interest it has to be good from the very beginning.
I truly loved this book. Like could-not-put-it-down loved it. I cried and I laughed out loud while reading. I was angry, sad, happy, and in some chapters, relieved.
I felt like I could hear her saying the words on each page. No matter who you are, there is something in the book that you can relate to.
I love that she expresses her real, raw emotions. Nothing is sugar coated for readers even when it is not super flattering. We all have our moments, some redeeming some not so much. Alicia has both and shares them with us.
Something really is better than nothing and if those words don’t resonate with you, they will after you read her book. Perspective is everything. Something IS better than nothing.
I can’t wait for her next book.

I discovered this author on TikTok. Her memoir sounded really good, so I placed an order for it right away.

This was difficult to put down! At less than 200 words, this memoir really packs a punch.

I enjoy a memoir that sprinkles humor throughout, particularly when the themes presented are pretty heavy. The humor isn’t overdone at all- it occurs just when you need a little chuckle amidst the sadness.

I enjoyed the structure of the memoir- the interweaving of stories about her husband with those about her father. I also really liked how she chose to end her story. It worked really well in my opinion.

This book was brutally honest with all the love of family. It touches on everything from PTSD to dysfunctional families to addiction and even through the anger manages to see the good of people. I could laugh and cry while reading the same page. Highly recommend!

This is a very honest and powerful read with enough humor and levity to balance things out. The structure is especially engrossing too, I ended up reading this in one sitting. Highly recommended.

Oh this book gave me the feels, having family members in the military I can kind of relate. This book was hard to put down and when I finished it I wanted and still want to hug her.

This book was an easy afternoon read that begged not to be put down! A wonderfully well written story that takes the reader on the author's emotional journey with deft precision. Raw, unapologetic and straight to the gut. I admire the honesty of Alicia's writing and am anxious for her next book.

Beautifully written and quick read that discusses the difficulties of a husband returning from duty with PTSD and a less than perfect childhood.

My heart.

This book reads like a punch in the gut, with a lollipop in your hand labelled “medicine”. Alicia shares her story unflinchingly, giving the reader moments to take a tiny breath of air before diving back into it. A book that brought to mind all the cliche sayings of sympathy, that instantly got silenced because well wishes and Instagram quotes don’t do squat. Well written, a book I’m happy I purchased and will linger in the shadows of my soul for awhile.

SOMETHING IS BETTER THAN NOTHING brings you into the lives of a family and makes you a part of it. I could not put it down until I made it to the end, crying during the tough stuff and laughing with the joys. It is a beautiful portrayal of love, grief, and the complexity of families.

“Something is Better than Nothing” reminds us of all the facets of love & family & relationships- the good, the hard, the hilarious, the cringe-worthy, the life altering huge moments and small and seemingly inconsequential moments that end up being anything but.... It’s an honest & raw “read in one sitting” kind of book that’s hard to put down. I especially loved the moments of insight from the narrator where she’s telling a past event and adds what she knows now but didn’t know back then. These moments were very well done. Would definitely recommend!
