The Jabberwock

Rate this book
Description
The sorceress of psychological suspense is back with the first book in her highly-anticipated new Nowhere, USA series. Ninie Hammon is at her career-best in The Jabberwock — a tale that will keep you up all night turning pages.

Nower County was never a hard place to leave. But now, leaving is impossible.

When drunk teenagers add letters to the Welcome to Nower County sign, making it Welcome to NoWherE County, nobody repaints it.

Because, Why bother? Everyone knows they live in the middle of nowhere.

Children’s book author Charlie McClintock and her three-year-old daughter, Merrie, return home to settle Charlie’s recently deceased mother’s affairs. It’s the first time since high school graduation that she and childhood friends Sam Sheridan and Malachi Tackett have been reunited.

A beat of happiness before Charlie experiences an unexplainable disaster.

A bizarre storm blows through the Appalachian Mountains and literally wipes Nowhere County off the map. The outside world forgets the tiny town ever existed, and no one can leave.

Anyone who tries wakes up in the Dollar General Store parking lot with blinding headaches, gushing nosebleeds, and no clue what happened to them.

Locals name the shimmering mirage on the county line that imprisons them the Jabberwock.

Abby Clayton thinks it's Charlie’s pet. Desperate to bring her baby home from the hospital across county lines, Abby is the only person who has dared to “ride the Jabberwock” more than once.

She believes that it spoke to her. Brain-damaged, barely able to walk from her injuries, Abby hatches a deranged plot to force Charlie to make the Jabberwock set them free.

Will Malachi manage to stop her and save Charlie and Merrie in time?

And more importantly, will Abby survive one last ride on the Jabberwock?

The Jabberwock is the first book of Ninie Hammon's new series, Nowhere, USA, a riveting psychological thriller about the residents of a forgotten county that inexplicably sinks through reality to find itself the middle of Nowhere.

Fans of Justified, Under The Dome, and LOST will love settling down to spend some time in Nowhere, USA.

I was born in Socorro, New Mexico, sometime shortly after the earth cooled off. It’s clear that from the outset my parents never intended for me to amount to anything. How could I? With a name like “Ninie?” Please.

Fame and fortune do not come to people named Ninie Bovell (My maiden name.) Gabriella Bovary? You could work with that. Even something as pedestrian as Madeline Bovell or Rebecca Bovell or (though you’d lose points here for lack of originality) Elizabeth Bovell. But Ninie? I never had a chance.

If I sound a mite hostile, bear in mind that in one decisive stroke my parents sentenced their precious newborn daughter to a lifetime of explanations that began my first day at Muleshoe Elementary School. (Yeah, Muleshoe. The hits just keep on coming.) After a painful week, I had a rap down that I still use today:

“No, it’s not Ninnie like skinny and penny. It’s Ninie—rhymes with tiny and shiny. 9e…get it? And no, it doesn’t mean anything, it isn’t short for anything, long for anything, or a substitute for anything. It just is. (Pause here for the inevitable ‘Why?’) You got me, pal, I couldn’t tell you.”

I grew up in Texas, got a BA in English and theatre from Texas Tech University and snagged a job as a newspaper reporter. Didn't know a thing about journalism, but my editor said if I could write he could teach me the rest of it and if I couldn't write the rest of it didn't matter. I hung in there for a 25-year career as a journalist. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, but as soon as I figured out that making up the facts was a whole lot more fun than reporting them, I never looked back.

Now, I write suspense--every flavor except pistachio: psychological suspense, inspirational suspense, suspense thrillers, paranormal suspense, suspense mysteries.

In every book I write I try to keep this promise to Loyal Reader: I will tell you a story in a distinctive voice you'll always recognize, about people as ordinary as you are--people who have been slammed by something they didn’t sign on for, and now they must fight for their lives. Then smack in the middle of their everyday worlds, those people encounter the unexplainable--and it's always the game-changer."

I probably skipped through half of this. Honestly its just boring…like seriously boring. Some things were exaggerated and some things I could not care less about. This was suppossed to be an intense horror read. I was suppossed to be freaked out or even a little bit scared, but I wasn't. It also had no suspense either. I believe a good horror book has a shit ton of suspense...anyways what do I know? I'm just a reviewer with unpopular opinions and tons of typos.

Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!

Ninie Hammon draws us in to her first book in this new series about Nowhere County and its own Jabberwock that is just as incredible as that of Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass. She takes us on a ride in a place that you can never get away from, where people are never quite the same after they meet the Jabberwock there.
Hammon is a master of storytelling, especially of the macabre that mixes with her ordinary, flawed characters whom you fall in love with because they remind you of your best friends. Not only does she tell a great story, but she does so in a way that captivates you by her use of words and analogy. Some reviewers have mentioned that the beginning of the book seems slow, but personally I enjoy these descriptive paragraphs that present the setting for the story to come. And what a story it is!
I am looking forward to further adventures from Nowhere and the people that I’ve met there.

Anyone who tries wakes up in the Dollar General Store parking lot with blinding headaches, gushing nosebleeds, and no clue what happened to them.

This was my sort of story… character driven from the outset Hammon introduces us to the enigmatic and sometimes downright loony citizens of Nowere USA who are having a particularly ‘strange’ day whilst trying to go about their daily errands. I genuinely wanted to know more about every one of her characters and really loved the mixture of what felt like ‘real’ people that Hammon has created.

Something strange is afoot in town and people soon realise they can’t leave… as the paranoia and panic rise, tensions between people fray! With no answers, nobody to help, no escape, and no one to blame the townspeople start turning on each other and it’s only a matter of time before the crazy takes over! This was a rollercoaster of a read and I can’t wait to get stuck into the next book in the series to see what else Hammon has in store for the poor townsfolk of Nower.

To be drawn into something so deeply that nothing else can intrude. A sharp focus, an unwillingness to split attention. That’s the definition of reading one of Ninie Hammon’s books. It particularly applies to The Jabberwock, her newest in a series of paranormal stories. I was hooked from the very beginning and so involved in the eerie descriptions that I forgot to eat!. Three friends, having not seen each since their high school graduation, meet again in the town of Nowhere and are thrown into a situation that makes it impossible to leave. A mirage, a mirror and the Jabberwok are at work and things will never be the same. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to be released.

I should say at the top of this review that I’m not a big fan of horror except in movies but I requested The Jabberwock mainly because of the cover. & I did like the idea of this book - a small town trapped literally in the middle of Nowhere USA by some unknown...something. I also liked most of the characters. The story was, for the most part, entertaining although I really didn’t need all the references to bodily fluids.

However, my biggest complaint & for me it’s a big one, I don’t mind a cliffhanger at the end of a book as long as I feel there has been a satisfactory ending to whatever part of the story is being told here. I didn’t feel that in this one. There are apparently seven books to this story but I think I’ll stop at one.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

The first book in this new series, Nowhere, USA, is everything I hoped for. And then much, much more. Ninie Hammon is an absolutely brilliant storyteller, one who has the ability to hold the reader spellbound throughout every book she writes. She takes the reader into the center of the plot, with an exquisitely written story that is always unique, unlike anything you have read before. The characters in this book are multi-dimensional; expertly created and developed. The best thing about this incredible tale is that there are six more books in the series! I cannot wait! If you've never read a book by Ninie Hammon, start here. And then journey through every single book she has written.

A cross section of town’s folk find themselves caught up in an intriguing apocalyptic event. It’s very Stephen King, but really well done nonetheless.

This is the first book in a new series and I am chomping at the bit, ready to read the next book. I loved this book. I did not want to put it down. If you enjoyed things like Stephen King's "It", and "Under the Dome" then you will love this because it was kind of a cross between those two books. I am really looking forward to seeing where the author takes the story going forward, especially leaving it on a cliffhanger like she did. I highly recommend this one!

I have read some of Ninie's books before but this one to me wasnt not very good. Actually it was a waste of my time but I always try to read a book all the way thru. People where showing up at the bus stop but didnt know how they got there . Someone else would show up - where did he come from? Jabberwock got them some how. Was that what happened to people coming from nowhere .

OMG!!!

What a story! Ninie Hammon is a very talented author. I love her storylines. They are unique and enticing, to say the least. The mysterious paranormal situations just pull me in immediately. This book doesn't let go.
The characters are very well developed and believable. Being a nurse myself I can strongly relate to Sam. I lost my mother last year so I can also relate to Charlie. The dialogue flows freely and smoothly. Although a lot of it is in very excitable situations. The editing is clean with little to no spelling or grammatical errors. I will recommend this book to anyone that loves mysterious paranormal unique storylines. Some people may not like the way the book ended but it's not a problem for me because I plan to read the whole series. It is just that good. Plus Ninie is releasing one book each month so it's not like we have to wait six months to a year for each new book. Can't wait!!!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Please do not engage The Jabberwock while under the influence of high fever.

So, it seems I'm not actually able to leave a realistic review for this book. I didn't realize when I started reading it that I was the victim of 2020's most notorious and foul virus. I had no idea that a few short chapters into the story I would be fighting feverish battles of my own. I had no concept that the Jabberwock would be leaping off the pages and into my beleaguered brain in such a way that fact and fantasy simply had no borderline for me any more.

Yikes!

I can't possibly review a book I fell into and lived. This love child of LOST and Alice in Wonderland is receiving 5 stars for my personal memories of a crazy, wild ride... and because I know this author always presents an amazing story. As for the story itself, you'll just have to read it on your own this time. Just don't do it in a feverish fit.

OH MY GOODNESS! Ninie Hammon's Jabberwock is incredible. Everyone of Ninie's book is wonderful but this one just blew me away. The first couple of pages were slow…with really long sentences…that I now understand was her intention. This was the part of the ride where you jerk slowly toward the top of the roller coaster...and then you plunge into the depths of who knows what. The entire book was a fast, roller coaster ride, all the way to the end...where I slammed into the wall...enjoyably...knowing that this is only book one of NOWHERE, USA, a series of seven. It's a fast read with a small amount of great characters that I found very memorable.

What is Jabberwock?

Ninie Hammon always delivers a story that has never been told before. Nowhere USA opens with a bang that promises a great series. I loved Jabberwock. The citizens of Nower are trapped by an unknown circumstance they named the Jabberwock. When anyone tries to go beyond the town limits they somehow arrive at the bus stop in the parking lot of the Dollar General disoriented with a killer headache, a nosebleed and horrible vomiting. Great characters, great story.

The Wait Is Over

It seems like I have been waiting forever for this new series to begin and of course I did not put down until the last page. The plot is just beginning to take shape in rural Kentucky. And I am already in love with the residents of Nowhere. Can't wait to find out what is causing the ruckus! Trust me, this book is another winner!

I love anything that Ninie writes, but you need to read this book! The characters are believable and the story is awesome. Loved every last word. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Dean Koontz and Stephen King! She is just as good of not better! Love her.

This was totally bizarre. I love that it incorporates my favorite weird town set-up. I wish we would have gotten a few more answers though. Some of the stories told by the characters seemed unnecessary.

I was easily able to follow through the multi POVs.
I will most likely continue the series if only to find out wtf is going on and why cant they leave Nowhere?!

Meh…

I was really excited for this book, hoping it would be interesting and a new series I could get into. I didn’t even want to finish this. Plot holes, skips around a LOT, the way the characters speak is sometimes confusing. Just didn’t enjoy very much, unfortunately. Potential to be a really good series.

I received a complimentary electronic copy of this novel from BookAdrenaline, the author Ninie Hammon, and publishers Sterling & Stone. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read The Jabberwock (Nowhere, USA Book 1) of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am happy to recommend Ninie Hammon to friends and family. She has a very fertile imagination - and she will share with you the fruits of it.

This is a book, a series that I will want to read and perhaps read again once the series is complete. The first installment is one to keep you up all night - and avoid the General Dollar store's parking lots at all costs. I enjoyed the characters, enjoyed being scared half-to-death, and loved this tale, beginning to end. I am adding Ninie Hammon to my must-read author list. She is a keeper.

I admit going into this book I had no idea what to expect. When I read the part from Viola's POV and the redneck-written dialogue that I could hear in my mind, I was hooked. This book is a lot like Under the Dome from a certain prolific horror writer in that no one can get in or out of this small town, literally the Middle of Nowhere in this case. However, this town is haunted by a phenomenon known as the Jabberwock, because of the looking glass mirage blocking the county border.

I appreciated the characters in this book, from those who "do what's necessary" in terms of the former solider with a raging case of PTSD, the LPN who wanted to be a doctor truly realizing her limitations and the girl who returned because her mother died who clearly doesn't want to be back in Nowhere, KY.

I have a huge TBR list and after finishing this book I have added the other six to the ever growing list. Luckily for me I don't have to wait for them to be published. Wonder if we'll ever see 'em on the other side?

Thanks to the publisher for this free book. My opinions are my own.
