SHELTER IN THE STORM by Laurel Blount is the first book in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series. It’s the well-crafted, heart tugging story of the Hockstedler family and the sweet romance between Joseph Hockstedler and Naomi Schrock.
When an Englischer young man seems to be unrealistically attracted towards Emma Hockstedler, things turn so very wrong. It ends with him murdering her parents, Elijah and Levonia, in their store and only leaving Miriam, the youngest of the family, alive when his gun jammed. Although not injured physically, the mental damage is significant. Now the man of the family, Joseph’s shoulder are heavy with responsibilities and a heart heavy with grief.
Emma, one of the twins, had been spared because they thought not having her in the store would make the Englischer come to his senses and know that his feeling weren’t returned. This leaves her with feeling responsible for the events that took place. Since it’s her that the press is so determined to get to for their story, she decides to spare the family and go stay with their Uncle Melvin and Aunt Lella in Oak Point where they live in a stricter, smaller Amish community. There she can stay safe, hope the press will lose interest and help in all the care that her cousin Henry, who has both physical and mental issues, needs.
Caleb, Emma’s twin and younger brother to Joseph, has always been a hot head. Their father had always been the only one to reason with him. Now he can’t accept that not only are his parents dead, but the man that murdered them has escaped justice. Recently married to Rhonda, the local bishop’s daughter and only child, he wants her to jump the fence and leave with him as he searches for Trevor Abbott so he can face the crimes he’s committed. With both baptized and members of the church, Rhonda knows that to leave would mean turning their backs on the church and being shunned by the church, community and family. Although not a big deal to Caleb who had only joined the church to get Rhonda to marry him, Rhonda’s faith is strong making it a step she cannot do. She knows that in the eyes of the church she will be married and unable to accept help from the church. Since to the church you are married for life, she will always be tied to this man about to walk out on her. Her life will be tough, but it’s what she must do. She’s so saddened by the fact that her love wasn’t enough to keep Caleb there.
During her childhood and health issue with her heart, Naomi Schrock’s best and most dependable friend had always been Joseph. He always took time for her and made her smile when everyone else thought her too brittle to play with or worth the effort. He didn’t make her feel like a burden because of the time and money she had cost him. She’s always had a soft spot in her heart for Joseph. After heart surgery to correct the Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome they’ve know she’s had since she was two, she is now fit and physically able to repay him for his kindness. She can maintain the home, cook the meals and be there to encourage Miriam so she can get better. Can she do it and guard her heart to this man who already owns a piece of it?
Joseph once thought he would marry Rhonda, but his procrastination ended with his brother beating him to the draw. Will his eyes open to the fact that maybe all things happen as God intended and the woman that was meant to be his fraa (wife) wasn’t Rhonda? Dare Naomi dream of a normal life with a husband, a home and a family of her own where she’s not being passed around from relative to relative and looked upon as a burden that someone has to shelter? When Naomi’s health starts to decline again, will she face it alone or will she realize that help from those that really love you isn’t a burden for them? Will selling the farm become a necessity or will a suggestion from unlikely source solve a major financial need? Can Joseph deal with the press in a way that shows the Englisch and the Amish that they aren’t so different in the many ways?
