The Fair Isle Trilogy #3

To Spark a Fae War

Rate this book
No one dreams of starting a war.
But without a fight there can be no revolution…

I used to protect lives. Now I’ve ended more than I’ve saved. But after being betrayed by the humans I trusted, I have no choice but to fight.

And the battle has begun.

With the truth of my fae heritage exposed, the line between friend and foe is blurred. The human and fae councils are out for blood and will stop at nothing until I, my mate, and my rebel allies are defeated.

If we lose the war, everything I’m fighting for—love, freedom, the fae I've sworn to protect—will be destroyed. At least there’s one thing my enemies have underestimated...

Me.

To Spark a Fae War is the final book in the Fair Isle Trilogy. This dark fae fantasy is perfect for fans of The Cruel Prince, ACOTAR, and The Iron King. If you like snarky fae, brooding fae royals, sizzling romance, and fierce heroines, you'll love this thrilling tale.

*To Spark a Fae War is an upper YA/NA book intended for mature audiences. It contains sexual situations, moderate steam, violence, and gore.

we will fight to the death if we must, but first we shall fight to live.

This book picks up right after the second book ends and it is mostly about the civil war that is on the brink of happening among faes, and the war between humans and faes. Evie and Aspen can barely catch a break with all the politics, plotting, council meetings, bargains being struck, and fights being fought. Evie also needs to claim her castle and title as Queen of the Fire Court, while dealing with her sister and trying to unite the Seelie and Unseelie faes of the Isle.

There is a big emphasis on revenge in this book. Evie is changing, and I don't like every change that she goes through. I have conflicted feelings about her honestly. I like her well enough as the main character, but some decisions she made... Ugh! I wanted to slap her in the face. She is full of anger and grief, but she tries to smother everything instead of dealing with it and that makes her reckless... She lies to everyone to get what she wants, and she gets mad when someone confronts her. She asks for advice but is pissed when the answer she receives is not the one she wanted to hear...

Evie’s magic also grows in this book, but not in a way that feels believable. She masters every element rather quickly and easily, and it is just so convenient, especially for someone who didn’t even believe in magic a few months ago. She instinctively knows what to do, and it works every time, making her a super-powerful character, even though she started using her powers only a few weeks ago.

Also, the fact that she used Aspen's true name to control him again when it was not a life-or-death situation is a BIG NO-NO for me. Consent goes both ways Evie, you can't force him to talk to you or listen to you or kiss you if he doesn't want to. She reacted like a spoilt toddler throwing a tantrum. She is not a bad character and she does have some qualities, but I was not impressed at all by her in this book, and that particular scene really bothered me. It is a total lack of respect, and the fact that Aspen was angry at first, but then just rolled with it annoys me too. He just let her get away with it without any consequence or serious discussion about respect and boundaries.

It's a good thing that Aspen was there to compensate for Evie's stupid choices. We got to see a more carefree side of him a few times in this book, and even though Evie got on my nerves more than once, I am glad that she and Aspen managed to work out their relationship after the whole uncertainty of the second book. I have to say though that their relationship seems to be built mostly on sexual desire than true and deep feelings at times. I can't really say that I feel their connection or that there is a truly meaningful bond between them. I am told that they love each other deeply, but I didn’t really feel it in this book.

“Isn’t that how the saying goes?” I whisper to the queen. “Keep your enemies close?”

Amelie is back in the picture too, but for most of the book, it is unclear if she is trustworthy or not. She and Evie reminded me of Jude and Taryn in The Cruel Prince series. I am glad that things got sorted out between the two sisters in the end and that Evie finally knows who she can and can't trust, but while I understand her suspicions and anger/resentment towards Amelie, it was becoming exhausting at a point because of everything else that was going on at the same time.

“Well, I do hope you find that person who makes you feel that way. Better than that, in fact.”
“So do I. In the meantime, if you and the Stag King find yourselves on the outs, come to me for a revenge tryst.” He winks.
I shake my head with a chuckle. “Are we friends, then?”
“Yes, Evelyn. We’re friends."

The edge of the blade bites into her skin just as a dark shape drops into the boat, landing near the motor’s controls.
“Hey beautiful,” says a familiar voice. Our guards whirl toward it, leaving Franco in full view, perched on the control panel in his Seelie form. Two dark, smoky tendrils spiral from his fingers to the heads of the navigators, holding them immobilized while their mouths are open in silent screams. Shadows are leached from them, flowing into the prince.

One complaint that I have though is that there is not nearly enough of Franco in this book. Like, what the hell?! We fell in love with him in the second book and he was all but absent from this one. I was expecting and hoping for more of him. I would have also liked more room in the story for Foxglove, Lorelei, and Fehr... Fehr is a new character, so I get why we didn't see him that much, but Foxglove and Lorelei were kind of forgotten in this final book and they've been part of the adventure since the start. They appeared here and there, and Lorelei was useful in the final battle, but I was still hoping for them to get a bigger role in this last book.

Overall, this is a good series that I recommend if you are looking for a fantasy adventure with romance and politics. It is quick and easy to read, and while some things bothered me, it was still quite entertaining. There is also a series of fairytales retelling standalone set in this world that I will read because one of them is about Franco, and I do love retellings. Hopefully, the lead female characters will be less annoying than Evie.

This book starts with a revenge mission that had me super excited. But I realised at 55% that I've just lost interest in this series. It doesn't help that Evie has turned into a bit of a b!tch.

I burn him with a fiery glare. “By the power of your true name, don’t walk away from me. Come back to me right now.”
His shoulders tense, arms rippling with rage, but he’s powerless against the command. With pounding footsteps, he returns to me, stopping just inches away. “How dare you use my name like this. I thought we—”
I crane my neck to look into his eyes. “I don’t want to be mad at you.”
“And this is supposed to help?”
I tilt my chin up. “Kiss me.”
He narrows his eyes. “This is hardly the time for that.” Magic dances on my lips, emitting the power of our Bond. “Kiss me,” I repeat, louder this time. “That’s not a request. It’s a command.”

Does no one else see a problem with this? She's literally took his will away from him and forced him to kiss her. Hey Evie, consent is sexy on women too. This actually shocked me.

I’m soo sad to leave these characters behind. I hope they make an appearance in the other books in this world. I didn’t expect to love this trilogy this much because I only started reading it because I want to read the Entangled With Fae Series but I am so glad I did. This is one of my new favorite series.
I loved everything about these books. I haven’t had a series captivate me this much in a very long time. I just wanted to sit down and read the whole book in one sitting that’s how good it was! I loved all the characters, the plot, THE ROMANCE! This series is gonna stick with me for a very long time.

AUTHORS NOTE 1.) Thank you to all my readers who have been on this journey through Faerwyvae. I couldn't do this without you! Literally! I'm so grateful for all the love you guys have given this series, and it's a bittersweet feeling to have it come to an end. BUT I'm not done with Faerwyvae just yet. There are other characters for me to explore and will be doing so with my next series, Entangled with Fae. This new series takes place 20 years after the events in To Spark a Fae War and will feature some familiar faces! Each book is a standalone fairytale retelling with a happily ever after. And YES one of those books is about Franco! He finally gets his love story in Heart of the Raven Prince!

You can find To Carve a Fae Heart here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087TDRH1T
To Wear a Fae Crown here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088KQYN4W
To Spark a Fae War here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GHCJFYX
Or the Complete Series Collection here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09753J8XS
Check out my next series set in Faerwyvae, Entangled with Fae: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08...

AUTHOR'S NOTE 2.) The Fair Isle Trilogy books got major cover makeovers! I illustrated these new covers to better match my Entangled with Fae covers (which I also illustrate myself), which is important since these two series are related! The Fair Isle Trilogy is set 20 years before Entangled with Fae. And now the covers better express how these two series are connected! I hope you like them!

“Always and forever, Aspen,” I whisper to him.
His eyes lock on mine. “Always and forever, Evie.”

The final one, the end of this amazingly well written trilogy; it was a roller-coaster. I loved it soooo much and it came at the right time, and, again, I stand by my first impression: it deserves more hype.

"Over the last week since Mother’s death, I’ve thought mostly of two things: killing Mr. Duveau and taking down the Briar House.
If I’m lucky, I’ll do both tonight."

After what went down in the previous book, I think there's no surprise that this novel is, mostly, about war. So you can expect lots of plotting, council meetings, bargains and fight scenes. And revenge. Plus, dear sweet Amelie is back in the picture. The question is, on whose orders?

“Isn’t that how the saying goes?” I whisper to the queen. “Keep your enemies close?”

We also get new characters, which, to my delight, are both unique and interesting and I truly think it's worth appreciating the originality of some ideas that I've found in this trilogy. Because I've been reading exclusively fantasy this year and yet, this series still managed to surprise me, I must stress this again: if you like fantasy and romance, this is for you.

Now, things from this book deserving a shout-out?

✅ Foxglove getting a new love interest

“You fancy the djinn, don’t you?”
Foxglove blushes, a sheepish grin tugging his lips.
“But I thought you fancied Franco.”
He waves a dismissive hand. “Forget Franco.”
“A motto to live by,” Aspen mutters with a smirk.

✅ the whole Amelie situation

✅ finally getting some revenge

✅ Aspen and Evie being couple goals

“Lorelei told me you had the power to fill the baths at Bircharbor at will.”
“I may have done that for you a time or two,” he says with a smirk. “Anything to encourage you to get naked.”

I don't know what I enjoyed more: their banter or their romantic teasing.

✅ Franco - in case you forgot, we ❤ Franco

“Well, I do hope you find that person who makes you feel that way. Better than that, in fact.”
“So do I. In the meantime, if you and the Stag King find yourselves on the outs, come to me for a revenge tryst.” He winks.
I shake my head with a chuckle. “Are we friends, then?”
“Yes, Evelyn. We’re friends."

I love that he and Evie worked out everything. Franco simply kept giving me huuuuuge Adrian Ivaskov and Nicolai Lantsov vibes (and they are two of my favorite characters), so I definitely wanted some happiness for this birdie as well.

✅ Nyxia’s table - you'll just know when you get there

✅ Foxglove’s curiosity about the size of a certain kingdom being satisfied

“Did you like what you saw, my friend?”
Foxglove blushes deeper, eyes flicking up at Aspen as a grin stretches across his face. “I think it would be a treasonous lie to say I didn’t, Your Majesty.”
Aspen barks a laugh.
Foxglove’s gaze meets mine and he lifts his brows, the tension seeming to melt from him as his shoulders relax. “Queen Evelyn certainly is a lucky lover.”

This scene made me laugh with tears. Again, unexpectedly original.

The ending was good, although a bit sad, but it was a nice conclusion for this entire trilogy and it left me feeling really lucky to have stumbled upon this universe. So, would I recommend it? Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Will it get you fangirling? Obviously.

"Her eyes are keen, telling me she knows there’s much more to this story.
But it isn’t one I want to tell right now. Not when there is still much work to do. Hearts to soothe. Wounds to tend. Dead to burn or bury.
When we’re done, I’ll tell them. I’ll tell everyone."

DNF shortly after the fight scene with Aspen and Evie.

I’ve tried. Tried to find something meaningful in their relationship other than sexual tension, and it’s just not there. I don’t even think they feel it there.

Evie obviously can’t keep her word. It’s ridiculous. And then when he gets upset that she’s a LIAR she literally throws a fit like a over-spoilt toddler. But she’s a human, so it’s ok if she breaks her word. Please, please read that as sarcasm.

I also take tremendous issue with the way she uses Aspen’s “true name” against him. The first time I thought, “Wow that was really messed up. I mean, I guess you were trying to save him but yikes girl. Not the way to build a relationship.” The second time?! She uses it to force him to not walk away from their argument (uhm hey, sometimes people need to cool down before they continue dealing with your annoying ass) and THEN forces him to kiss her when he clearly expresses that he doesn’t want to. But it’s okay, he’s into it a few minutes later so it doesn’t matter that she took away his free will. Again, please please hear the overabundant sarcasm dripping from the electronic page. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS CHICK?!?

Sure are there times you wish your partner would act differently or not walk away from a fight, absolutely. But the fact that she abuses her ability to control him just shows that she’s not mature enough to be in that relationship. Her communication is crap. She’s a raging chaotic mess of rudeness and selfishness (that is disguised as heroic selflessness and just her “innate fire”). And she constantly treats her “mate” as less than her. They are not equal. How can you be equal when one partner lords your LITERAL FREE WILL over you. One minute she says they share a court, the next she stomps her foot and shouts “IM THE QUEEN” (not a direct quote but basically). I swear to god, she’s got less emotional maturity than a two year old. I can’t read this anymore. I’m out. And Aspen should run as far as he can. At least Franco dodged that bullet.

"We will fight to the death if we must, but first we shall fight to live."

rating: 3.75

the most action packed of the trilogy, i do think it could have used some trimming down as there was a lot of monologuing. it's moved away from the romance focus of book 1 to many political machinations between the fae courts and their tumultuous relations to the human regions.

overall, this series is probably my least fav of odette's so far mostly bc while she does a good job at creating a more typical politics-first fantasy in this series, i just personally enjoy the romance-focused series she's written after these.

it was fun to see the many characters who appear in entangled with fae as well as fae flings and corset strings and get a bit more into the origin story of faerwyvae.

“Always and forever, Evie. No matter how many days that is.”

While I found the first two books in the series to be somewhat lackluster, I was pleasantly surprised by how the final book improved. The plot was more engaging and action-packed, with several exciting moments that held my attention. The characters also experienced more development and growth, making them more relatable and likable.

I still had some issues with the writing style and pacing, but the improvements in the final book made it a worthwhile read. I appreciate how the author wrapped up the various storylines and provided a satisfying conclusion to the series.

Rating: 4/5 This book is the final book in the Fair Isle Trilogy. For me this was the strongest book of the series and a really satisfying conclusion to the story. It picks up a few days after the events of book two as the Fae Courts and humans prepare for war.

Book Details:
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult
Narration Type: 1st Person POV (Evelyn)
Steam: 2/5
Tropes: Arranged Marriage, Fated Mates
Reading Age: 14+
Trigger warnings: death, abuse, mental illness

Like the previous two books this was told in 1st person through Evelyn's POV. I think part of me will always wish that this series had been multi-POV to include Aspen and Amelie with their short stories incorporated into the series proper. In particular, Amelie's story did not play out as I expected it to. I would have loved more insight into her feelings regarding Cobalt and her emerging power.

As much as I struggled to understand Evie in the last book I was on board for her in this one. She is more reasonable and logical in her words and actions. She is in touch with her emotions and able to acknowledge them without letting them control her. She and Aspen finally appear to be happy. Their interactions with each other are more frequent, supportive, and intimate in this book than in the previous two combined. I liked that they were able to lean on each other and support each other rather than being at odds or separated.

I do need to talk about the timeline of this series for a moment though. Book one covers approx. 5 weeks and the bonding ritual occurs 4 days before the book ends. Book two covers approx. 3 weeks. If I have followed along correctly, when this book begins Evelyn and Aspen have only known each other for 2 MONTHS and they have only been romantically involved for just over 3 WEEKS. The way Evie discusses falling deeply in love, adjusting to being queen, and mastering her magic is sounds like she's talking about months or years. She’s taking about days or weeks. It’s WILD.

The plot of this one kept me on my toes. A lot of things did not play out the way I expected them to. It was fast paced and exciting. Including the short stories, my average rating for this series was 3.6/5.0. I absolutely recommend this series to fans of romantasy.

I'm sorry, but I did not like this book. At all.

First off, everything that's happened in it can be described using a single word - absurd.

So there was this intense buildup along the last 2-2.5 books. We had a really good villain, and a very promising civil war. Then, 2.5 books later all I'm left with is what in the actual fuck?

That villain turned out to be a joke. The way his "part" was handled was a huge disservice. Everything about his storyline was pathetic and unsatisfying.

Over halfway through the series the author decided that whatever the hell she wrote beforehand - just wasn't [good] enough. That's when the series started taking a turn for the worse. It's like she wrote down an entire list of ideas, got drunk, and decided to use ALL of them. The end result was messy and confusing.

And why's the MC getting kidnapped eVERY OTHER chapter? Istg, all the other characters were there solely for the purpose of hijacking her at a certain point. It's like they were all taking turns doing it.

Which brings me to the following point - the MC. She's either a BAMF with strength unrivaled, who can reshape pure metal into a fucking dagger or burn entire estates/ships to the ground. OR she's a fucking loser who can't even throw a punch or defend herself from a middle-aged grandpa who mostly ran a sedentary lifestyle and who for some reason manages to overpower and then kidnap her (??). Even though she's supposed to be this Aelin wannabe. Nothing in between. Can you make up your mind already?

To end my review on a positive note-
Aspen is husband goals. Gonna add him to my list of fictional mates ❤

DNF after 13 %. While I had problems with the beginning of book 1 since I couldn't get over Evies biased behavior towards most fae... especially Aspen and her weird reverence for Cobalt (Idk he was definetely sus from the beginning and should have been voted out). But I dealt with it and I even started to enjoy the first book. So much better that I actually quite liked book 2.

But well here goes book 3... right in the beginning Evies behavior starts to get very Bad again. Not only does she lie to everyone to get her "revenge", but she also gets mad when confronted with her destructive behavior.
This is something that is not quite mature, but I can overlook it. But then the following scene started after approx. 10-13% of the book:
Aspen tries to give her some advice for ruling since SHE ASKED and as they planed to rule together as mates anyway. Since he has way more experience in ruling this makes sense (to me at least)... she should be grateful for that opportunity to learn, right? No. Instead she gets unreasonably angry and a fight breaks out between them. During which she even uses Aspens true name a second time (!) to order him to prevent him from leaving this uncomfortable situation and then forces him to kiss her even though he even tells her that he did Not want to! Consent? Not found! I am really all for women empowerment. But this... this is just toxic behavior!

Anyhow I still liked the authors other books that play on the fairy isles. highly recommend these over this mess.

DNF 13% The first 50 pages of this book has bored me to death, so for now, this is a DNF. There is so much unnecessary miscommunication and arguing between the FMC and MMC and I can’t get past it right now.

I laughed, I cried. I felt joy, anger, pride, empathy, sadness, despair and anxiety. It was heartbreaking in such unexpected moments and my trust fell into such unexpected individuals. I completely recommend this series.

To Spark a Fae War, the final book in the Fair Isle trilogy, starts off strong, with a horror, that has been on my mind since book 2, as well as on the mind of other readers I'm sure, being dealt with. No mercy. Too bad Evelyn is using these things to distract herself from her grief and guilt. Trying to cripple your emotions might make one overly reckless.

Evelyn 'Talk about theory gets me all hot and bothered' Fairfield. This young woman who values life but must wage war to protect everything she holds dear, to protect all ways of life, while sorting through so many emotional scars and learning the way of seelie and unseelie, as well as using her magic. Who can she trust and how will she keep harmony?

This book is about love, loyalty, grief, forgiveness, duty to your people and again, love. All the kinds of love, not just Eros. It's about coming into yourself too.

*sigh*, how does one just say goodbye to these characters and their world? How does one assure themselves the disgusting humans won't strike again? (if you've read the series, you know. The humans disrespected the treaty immensely and took as much power as they could. In the end, what were we expecting from people who so easily trade their daughters away??)

Peeps, there was action and battle and death. Relationships grew. We see Aspen be light-hearted and soft like never before which is such a big step for him!!

One thing I've loved about Tessonja's books is how magic functions through intent and visualization. I know in many stories a mentor will tell the apprentice to focus, feel the magic inside them, believe in themselves, yada yada... Yet, the descriptions of finding, harnessing, controlling this magical power are very different. In here, we find something akin to meditation and introspective work, which comes out more realistic than waving this magical stick works better for X than for Y because of reasons. And the fact that putting intent to make things happen is crucial is honestly very cool, since in real life, intent is also everything.

This year, I've given chances to some authors whose book I didn't enjoy (sometimes the one you hate is a fluke, sometimes the one you love is the exception - I like figuring that out, it helps me waste less time with indecision in the future), but after 3 books by the same person not doing it for me while there being nothing wrong with the books, I have to admit their writing is just not for me. With Odette is the opposite. 2020's six new novels and short stories have been moments of bookish enjoyment, amongst plenty of bookish dissatisfaction. I will be looking forward to anything Tessonja Odette writes at this point.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I so wish this series had been a duology - I was definitely ready for the story to end while reading it. After two books worth of fun fantasy intrigue and plots full of twists and betrayal, the final book leads to the series epic conclusion with… a book full of war politics. I hate when fantasy books fall down the “leaders at war” rabbit hole for the final instalment in a series, because you know you’re getting a book full of stubborn figureheads sitting around a table talking strategy and it is so, so boring. It is the pitfall of fantasy trilogies that unfortunately The Fair Isle Trilogy fell into.

Obviously, it’s not all bad. What little action scenes they had were fun and I finally felt a spark of chemistry between Aspen and Evelyn. I don’t think the story of them falling in love in the first book was done well (at all), and their relationship was so forced in the second, but the story of them being in love in this one is done perfectly.

DNF at 45%. After Evie and Aspen have the argument where she uses his true name AGAIN for no good reason I hated Evie. She clearly doesn't have any regard for consent or his feelings and that's so wrong. After that I started noticing her character is pretty terrible... lying, deceiving, double standards etc. and decided to stop reading. I was really enjoying the series until I stopped seeing growth in Evie.

Aspen became really flat and Franco and Foxglove become my favorite characters but we hardly seem them in the book so I didn't bother finishing.

I LOVED Evelyn's development arc in this book.

Over the last few books she has grown cold, but by the end she discovers the importance of being compassionate as well as strong. I admit, I don't like some of the decisions she made and overall I still view her as flawed but I think Tessonja Odette gave her a good overall development arc and I'm satisfied by the end result.

Tessonja Odette is officially an auto-buy author for me and I think I'm now going to read everything she publishes!

I enjoyed this final book in the series, although it didn't read as fluently as I had hoped. Sometimes it really took a while before something new and exciting happened in the book. Nevertheless, different themes are wonderfully discussed and integrated with each other and the storyline. Like friendship, vengeance, altruism, prejudices, love, anger, forgiveness, ... I would have loved to see Foxglove, Lorelei, Fehr and Franco get some more "pagetime", but maybe that's more something for the spin-off series 😉

Thank you for providing me with an ARC of the story, I enjoyed reading this trilogy. Now on to the 2 short stories as a way for me of saying goodbye to Faerwyvae for now.

Weak ending to a great series...all character development was dropped in exchange for a rushed, mildly epic ending. The world building was well done, and small pieces of information from early on in the series were relevant at the end, but I can't help but feel disappointed with the characters...I wasn't attached to anyone. And the main character gave me some narcissist vibes 😂 she only ever cared about herself, how she felt, how she affected a situation. Of course this was masked as some sort of self sacrificing heroine BS, but I thought she'd work through it...nope!

Aspen had so much potential but he became a one dimensional character the moment they got together. He had emotional turmoil, his own political agenda, his own family drama, and it was all dropped the moment he mated with Evie. Everything she wanted, he would do. He had two close family members die, and it was never brought up! Evie never asked how he felt when his mother and brother died and he seemed perfectly happy as long as he could bed Evie. No grieving, nothing. And these aren't humans who died after a long life, these are fae, immortal beings who should've kept living for a few thousand years after the series ended. And somehow Aspen didn't she'd a single tear after Cobalt died? I know Cobalt was a pretty grey character, but Aspen raised him ffs!

Evie was just so self centered, that's why every other character fell flat. She only cared about herself. Her mom dies, and she goes on these super long tangents about how she feels so much sorrow and anger and yet we get barely any sadness from Amelie, her sister... I really thought we'd get more from Amelie too especially after all she went through and how broken she was after the second installment, but apparently she just had to start sewing pretty dresses and her glamour induced nightmares disappeared. Her whole emotional journey with Cobalt also ended the moment he died and that's just ridiculous to me...there was so much that happened between them!

Argh I could go on all day, but I won't...I really only read this series to get some backstory on the Entangled with Far series so I will go to that now since I do love Franco!

How can I possibly be ready to say farewell to a series that has quickly become one of my forever favorites!? I'm not ready to leave Faerwyvae behind nor Aspen and Evie.  I've loved every second of their relationship and cheered as they overcame so many trials and obstacles. Evie and Aspen have my heart!

This is a series that will remain locked within your heart and mind long after those last beloved words because the characters are just so memorable and entertaining.  You'll want to step right into their word and spend a day locked away in Evie's parlor drinking with Foxglove and Lorelei as you catch up on all of the gossip.

This conclusion took my breath away! I wasn't sure how the day would be saved, but I had complete faith in Evie. I was holding my breath, absolutely dreading to discovering which friends we'd lose along the way (There was one scene that was so powerfully written that I just stared at the page for a moment, stunned into a surprised state!). I'm still shocked and wrapping my mind around a few events but that's a testament to the tremendous writing ability that Ms. Odette possess. She's taken me away on a few adventures now and I'll gladly run away with her at any time.

I'm going to be re-reading this again and again. It's just that wonderful. Don't hesitate to visit, you're going to feel a part of Evie's world very quickly.  One-click this beautiful book right now!!

I don’t usually rate or review books I DNF, but I had to with this one because I have such strong feelings. I DNF’d 60% in because Evie’s attitude got WORSE. A lot worse. I was really hoping she would grow, but sadly, she backtracked and literally just turned into a whole a$$ child. Queen? No. She literally acted like a 12 year old and STILL treats Aspen like shit. Yet she’s supposed to be in love with him? Nahhhhh.

This had such potential because the storyline was great, but Evie’s actions and her spiteful attitude got on my nerves so bad I couldn’t stand her lol. It’s been a LONG time since I despised a character so much. Especially a main character you’re supposed to be rooting for. Nope. Just… nope.

I really enjoyed the first two in this series, even with Evie’s attitude. It wasn’t even that bad in the first two! I usually LOVE this author’s works, this one is just a dud. Def still planning on reading more of her!

Lovely series! I don’t really have anything negative to say, but this book was also not the most captivating book I’ve ever read. The magic system and political conflicts were interesting, the complicated relationships and betrayals made the plot move along nicely. And o will say this final book was my favorite of the series!

𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥!
this was such a sad review to make because i have been absolutely eating up tessonja odette's writing in a rivalry of hearts and immediately launched myself into this series directly after starting married by scandal but stopping once i realized that it was based in this series. loved so many aspects of the first book, but i felt my enjoyment for the book dwindle more and more in the second book and by the time i got to the third book, i fear that my inner fire burned away any positive feelings i had about this series.

𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘪 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘰 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬?
speaking of inner fire, HOW MANY TIMES CAN ONE PERSON REACH INSIDE FOR THEIR INNER FIRE TO BURN *SOMETHING* AWAY 🙏🏻😭 i UNDERSTAND that it's a fun visual and i UNDERSTAND that it's to remind us of her powers but for the love of oak and ivy i cannot grasp why it is necessary to use THIS MANY TIMES. the word fire came up 265 times. TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE TIMES. it was just too much of a repetitive element that lost any of its lustre at that point. i was rolling my eyes each and every time she mentioned her fire. we GET it you're FAE now and you have FIRE POWERS now PLEASE STOP ❤️

𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘹...𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥:
also....i'm sorry but the multi-colored pink fire fox is lowkey giving the characters we made up as kids on the playground when we were trying to be as unique and cool as possible. i just found it so hard to take it seriously when it was revealed that her unseelie form was a super cutesy aesthetic fox that had magical pink fire. and also of course she's blessed by the all of all. and she can go to the twelfth court for a spot of afternoon tea if she feels like it. sure. i think she was just too overpowered so soon after she got these powers and it meant that i never doubted that she would win while making very minimal sacrifices. it really undercut a lot of the attempts at tension or stakes.

𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴?? 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘕𝘖𝘛 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘯:
in general, i went from absolutely LOVING evelyn to just feeling as though she was a completely different character by the end of the series. she all but loses that passion for medicine and humanity in favour of essentially behaving like she's fully fae. it felt very reminiscent of the way in which feyre from ACOTAR goes from having her own hobbies & interests & whatnot to fully being invested in fae politics. evelyn was suddenly a clone of every fae queen protagonist i've ever read, rather than her own distinct character with quirks & personality the way she was in the first two books:(

also??? the kissing scene?????

GIRL. CONSENT????????? i'm sorry but this was crazy. aspen u deserve so much better than this 🥺 this is NOT my evelyn because huh?? 😭

𝘤𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘵 & 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴:
i felt like the arc of the story had a lot more potential with cobalt still alive. i LOVED the way that there was this weird layered conflict of cobalt loving amelie-> was it REAL love, was it the haze of the commands that he made when they traded lies for love...?

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘱 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘭𝘵'𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘴. "𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴," 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴, 𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩. "𝘐'𝘮 𝘴𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦. 𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦. 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴."

i read the little extra story tessonja oddette did from amelie's POV set in the middle of the series and just felt like it had so much POTENTIAL. killing cobalt off felt like a bit of a cop out- we saw amelie have all these conflicting feelings about it that i just would have loved to see explored. i stand by thinking that cobalt should have been the ultimate villain. there would be more personal stakes involved, seeing as he is aspen's brother and amelie's former love, and the added mechanic of the true name just had me so much more intrigued. in my opinion, this book had a lot of potential when it looked like cobalt was still the main villain, but killing him off meant that the book suddenly just couldn't hide all the sarah j mass similarities any longer.

now. speaking of sarah j. mass similarities.
𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘩 𝘫. 𝘮𝘢𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴:
- first potential love interest turns out to be evil (tamlin & cobalt)
- night-time themed bat monster boy (rhysand & franco)
- final boss is for some reason a king character that literally no one gives a shit about
- all of the courts are season or element themed
- main character suddenly turns out to be/ becomes fae and suddenly wholeheartedly is embedded in fae culture

there are absolutely so so so many more. but it's late and i'm tired. i will be taking the rest of my complaints to the twelfth court. goodnight 😀

I’m giving this trilogy a 4⭐️ overall, it was so fun and I fell in love with the story line.

I adore Evie and Aspen’s relationship, and I am so happy they got there happily ever after!🫶🏻

I am SO glad this is finally over. If this series taught me anything it’s not to buy a trilogy in one audiobook unless I’m absolutely sure I want to read/listen to it.

This was sooooo painful. I absolutely loathe the narrator and I hate that I always have to know ALL characters. If I didn’t then her Fae Flings series would have kept me in a false sense if security.

And before I leave it with those dramatics I will gladly let you know my main issues with this story and series.

Evelyn.

She is the worst character I have ever come across. Honestly the narrator is 95% of that problem because she says “Evelyn said flatly” (or whatever) and yet she is whining!? Nope. Just no.

I physically read Amelie’s short story and I didn’t read her as whiny as this narrator has always made her seem.

Anyways, back to my issues…
Evelyn tells Aspen he will not tell her what to do or control her, he apologizes, and then what does she do!? Uses his name to control his actions… again!
She sits there and thinks her word is law but when it’s pointed out her actions were extreme she played victim.
She thinks she knows everything and hates when someone points something out to her and then is like, oh makes sense, now it’s my idea. Aspen cares for her deeply but Evelyn is manipulative towards him. His comment of them being made for each other? Barf. He deserves better.
She seems to loathe her sister and doesn’t mind taking her free will from her using the Cobalt excuse…
Speaking of Cobalt… he was nowhere near redeemable but tried coming off as sorry and in love with Amelie? Nope.

Had I read these first I never would have given this author another go. Knowing what I know now though, she is a great write but this series ain’t it.

Dramatics over.
