By the time I got to this book I was ready to end the series. I truly think this has been the weakest book thus far, probably setting up for the next in the series but nothing too engaging was happening here. As someone with a degree in psychology the change in Vars is hard to believe. I don't fully understand why they killed Greave. I can understand some of the change in Erin but its feels like not enough time has passed for her too have changed so much either. It feels weird that odd dies but she doesn't, he was clearly the better wartior, so how did she get the killing blow? Anders just seem angry and traitorous for no reason. Almost like Vars except with more confidence. I keep hoping Rodry somehow survived and will show up, but I think its time I gave that dream up. The theif going to Lenores ball didn't seem real either. If anything it seems like he will flaunt his wealth to those he knows as opposed to going to a ball where as a princess and him acting as nobility she surely would have heard of him before.
Since Devin is a sorcerer and not just a poor hand wouldn't that qualify for those two to be married? I don't understand the issue since he is studying under Master grey and his family lineage is truly unknown maybe he does come from nobility. Either way he is not just an average poor citizen. Not sure I will read the next book for a while I feel like this story is ongoing and I need a break so I can re-engage. I really liked that the plot moved fast the first couple of books but now it feels like the same things are happening over and over again.

Must have for your fantasy bookshelf

I have fallen in love with this story since book one, and Shield of Dragons book seven in the Age of Sorcerers series did not disappoint. Author Morgan Rice masterfully navigates the Northern Kingdom, Southern Kingdom, and lands beyond with plot twists I must give 5 stars. Throughout the first six books in the series, she was able to kill off characters I loved and hated, and still keep the heartbeat of the story steadfast, pulling me along with each beat through all of book 7.

In Shield of Dragons, Royalsport is back under the control of Queen Lenore and she and Devin have reconnected. Prince Vars is exiled, Greave finds his way back to life in Royalsport as a changed man willing to take risks, and Erin has become Lenore’s bodyguard until she is sent off to the Southern Kingdom on a dangerous mission. Princess Nerra is pulled back into the story, but she is no longer the sweet, kind princess shunned by people because of the scale sickness. The sickness has transformed her into something new. The dragons tell her that she is perfected. But, without providing big spoilers, let me say, the “Perfect” is scary, like a Jekyll and Hyde type personality. Rice offers glimpses that the real Nerra may still be present within the creature she has become and provides breadcrumbs of hope that she may break free but there are no guarantees as to what will happen next.

At the heart of the story is the magical amulet found in book six of the series. In Shield of Dragons, we see it at work. The one who wields it can control a dragon. But having possession of this talisman kills most people by sucking the life out of them. Throughout Shield of Dragons, it changes hands, and as book seven concludes, I’d say it’s in the wrong hands.

I have grown used to the fact that Rice’s books in this series are more episodic. I still don’t love that approach to book writing, but with that said, the story is captivating enough for me to continue on to the last book in the series. If you are a fantasy reader who enjoys medieval-type settings filled with wizards, dragons, royals, nobles and peasant folk, and unrequited love then this book is for you. I’m ready for the final book in this series, Dream of Dragons (Age of the Sorcerers—Book Eight).

Another volume in the Age of the Sorcerers series packs quite a punch. In the wake of war, the remaining siblings continue to struggle to find ways to unite the kingdom and protect those they love. Sadly, these attempts don't always prove successful. More of the world comes to light as characters find themselves seeking out ways to ensure the safety of loved ones and their kingdom. It is hard to say more without creating spoilers.

Wow!!

It will be a long wait for the finale! Shield of Dragon again captures the imagination. I enjoy this series as it provides total escapism from the pandemic and housebound. The characters have gotten in to my mind and I was so satisfied when Lenore finally was able to do what needed to be done. A magic moment. Many surprises, it was like wow!

Dragons and magic

The combination of dragons magic and political intricate maneuvers keep the plot lively and the story enjoyable. The decision of each character influenced the actions of other characters in the book. Totally enjoyable

Was going to give it less stars, but I really liked the way the Queen resolved her issue, so it's back up to 4. I am enjoying this series, but so glad there's only one more
book to go.

3.5. It’s dragging on too much and I’m not a fan of the additional side characters that have come out of nowhere.
