This short guide is an excellent primer for new writers dipping their toes into the world of novel-writing. Sometimes books on craft offer a lot of detailed information that could overwhelm the novice writer who needs the "big picture" before they can start breaking things down into smaller parts. But this wonderful writing companion gives the big picture first, without overwhelming the new writer, taking them through a brief overview of the elements required for a complete novel, including the initial idea, characterization, setting, conflict, and plotting. Johnston also includes tips about motivation and self-care for the writer.

Bonus? It's a a nice refresher for more experienced writers too!

Helpful guidlines

The core of a story is the main characters heart of desire. Which I believe to be true. And if you do not know how the character will end up in the story, how do you know what story you are writing. Two very important keys that will help me in figuring out my character. Remember, readers pay attention to the characters. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent guide to getting it done

This book has excellent ideas and advice on how to really dig in and get your story told. The point I love most: "That story chose you." Yes, yes it did. Now I just need to get it out of my head.

I actually enjoyed reading every chapter and lesson summary in this book and wondered if the author was to produce a sequel to it possibly because of its suggestions within the pages. I even read the requirements to be a writer in full progress as well - wow!!
