Avengers assemble! This is the tenth book in the series Pocket Books published in the late 1970's featuring Marvel superheroes in prose adventures, and it's one of the best. The roster features Iron Man, Thor, The Vision, Quicksilver, The Beast, and The Scarlet Witch in a time-travelling quest to save Captain America from the evil machinations of Kang the Conqueror. (Or Conquerer, as it's misspelled on the back cover.) There's quite a bit of good humor, and the rocky relationship of Vision and Quicksilver is interesting. David Micheline was a very good comics writer, particularly on Iron Man, and his knowledge of the characters shows to good effect. This story would have been a good Avengers arc.

If you see this book with branding from the EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES cartoon be forewarned- though elements here may have a loose connection to the way that excellent show used Kang the Conqueror, the novel was published in 1979 and boy does it show.

The Quinjet has a selection of Eight-Track cassettes! Groovy.

Groovy.

No-one in the Avengers knows that Tony Stark is Iron Man.

He's just my bodyguard. Honest!

Hank McCoy is less verbose scientific genius more wisecracking jabroni from Queens.

The situation is thus, old chums!

It's a really random book, a lot happens and not all of it completely cringeworthy. I even empathized with the "villain" of the first half, an elderly Innuit man duped by Kang into attacking the Avengers out of his desire to return his people's traditional values and lifestyle in the face of modern progress, while the scenes set in the far future of the year 3999 were just gonzo.

Too realistic by far for this book.

Final verdict: if you want a laugh over the state of these characters at the dawn of the 1980s by all means check it out, otherwise not worth your time.

Thomas Wolfe said, "You can't go home again." He was right. However! I first read this book in 1979 when it first came out (I was 16) and re-read it a few weeks ago (you do the math). I found it, and the rest of the Marvel novels carefully preserved in a Thom McAn shoebox. So, I thought what the heck.
David Michelinie has always been one of my favorite comic book writers. His stint on 'Iron Man' in the 70s and 80s has never been equaled. He also had a good run on the Avengers... and hence, this book.
The plot is great, a real "Why didn't anyone ever think of this?" story. Remember in Avengers #4 when those Eskimos were worshiping the block of ice with Captain America in it? The story uses that as its jumping off point and... well, why spoil it?
Anyway... you sort of do get two stories for the price of one 1) the Avengers trying to get Cap back and 2) traveling to the future to face the insane Kang the Conquerer.
The one downside is Quicksilver's constant haranguing of the Vision, and his creepy devotion to his sister Wanda. Just too overbearing. Wish Mr. Michelinie had toned that down.
I still enjoyed this book...not as much as when I was a kid, but it was a pleasant diversion.

I was really expecting to like this. I've been reading a bunch of these 1970s Marvel prose novels and I was really looking forward to reading one by the guy who was actually writing Avengers and Iron Man at the time. Surely it had to be good!

Well... sort of.

The first half was great, modulo the period-typical racism you kind of expect when they're working with Silver Age comics -- it was a story about Steve being kidnapped and refrozen by one of the people who had worshipped him as a god while he was frozen. And then in the second half it turned out Kang was behind everything and they went to the future and that's when it got weird. Weird like "the other Avengers have to tell Beast that he can't go to a massage parlor right now because they have to fight Kang." That kind of weird.

If I could I would give the first half four or five stars and the second half one. It was two books pasted together and the first one was great and I have no idea what Michelinie was thinking.

This book is oddly two stories rolled into one, connected by a thread, but with more page space devoted to the first story than the second. I'm not a huge fan of the direction that they went with for a lot of the characters, and the villain in the first story could have been developed more than "Native American mad at white people". They also spent so much time building up Kang to be a threat, but in the end he was really useless. Could have been a lot better.

This book was a mess. I didn't expect any less than that, though, this being the tenth Marvel novel of steadily decreasing value. Unlike the movies, the books they put out in the late 70's/early 80's never really hit their stride, and this was probably the worst of the bunch.

I remember finding and buying a copy of this at a local thrift store back in the mid-80s and enjoying this book. My original copy was lost in the early 90s and I ended up buying a copy via the Internet out of nostalgia. I still enjoyed reading this book so many moons later in my life, but maybe not quite so much as the first time I read it. It had a decent flow to it; it held my interest but I had no problem putting the book down it something else came my way. The verbiage was obviously an attempt to mimic the banter between the heroes from the comics; sometimes it worked, sometimes it did not. I do remember being disappointed because each chapter showed different members of the team at the top of the first page of each chapter; I had been under the impression that the Black Panther, Hawkeye, and the Wasp were also going to be in the novel. Alas, the pictures were misleading and they were not!

The plot is this: The Avengers return to their mansion for debriefing after defeating an alien invasion. They are attacked by an aged Eskimo who babbles about the Blue Totem giving him the powers to restore his long-lost god to him. Obviously thinking he is referencing Thor, the other Avengers tell him to stand back and attack their attacker. A mystical polar bear appears and defeats the team; Captain America is taken captive. Both the Bear and the Eskimo depart; the Eskimo for his former village and the Bear for Atlantis. When the rest of the team regains consciousness, they listen to their security tapes to decipher what happened and why Captain America was taken instead of Thor. The Vision and Iron Man head to Atlantis to find out why the Eskimo calls Namor 'the god-stealer' and the rest of the team heads to Alaska to free Cap.

Upon arriving at Atlantis, Iron Man and Vision find Namor and his Atlantean army waiting for them. Iron Man and Namor exchange harsh words and are ready to come to blows, but the Vision intercedes and convinces Namor to listen to them. After the Vision has explained the situation and asked why this Eskimo might be angry with Namor, they learn that Namor was the one who threw Captain America's ice-entombed body across the ice floes and into the water. Which is how the Avengers found Cap - floating in a block of ice in the water. Then Brother Bear attacks. Namor and his forces are unable to defeat the creature; the two Avengers come up with a plan to trap the creature in a valley between two tall undersea mountains. Upon being asked to trust them and help them, Namor states he will not trust the Avengers but he will help them free Captain America.

The rest of the team arrives in Alaska just after the Eskimo begins destroying the town that has arisen in place of his village. The team is having trouble defeating the aged shaman. Beast and Wanda are knocked unconscious; Quicksilver is trapped in entangling lichen, and Thor is busy fighting an enchanted fire. Namor, Vision, and Iron Man employ diversionary tactics to defeat the shaman, and some measure of sanity is restored [except that Cap is still a Capsicle]. Namor soon departs once the shaman is taken into custody. After questioning the shaman, the Avengers determine the Blue Totem is none other than Kang the Conqueror and that they will have to find Kang to have Cap thawed free.

The team gathers around Thor, who uses his hammer to transport the team to the far future. Prior to departure, the Vision had gathered the gemstones that had been a part of the shaman’s necklace and Iron Man used them to create a tracking device to locate Kang in the time stream [the gemstones actually being segments of a rather sophisticated computer masquerading as a necklace]. The future is not at all what the Avengers expect; the Earth has been turned into a giant amusement park. Kang claims he meant the shaman’s actions to be a joke, never expecting the aged Eskimo to actually find and defeat the Avengers. He frees Cap and lets the team go, claiming he wants nothing but peace. The Avengers prepare to leave, but after discussing the situation believe Kang is hiding something. Then they are attacked by a T-Rex. The time-lost lizard is easily beaten, but with their suspicions confirmed the team prepares to re-invade Kang’s fortress.

Kang uses his advanced technology to ensure Thor knocks himself out after throwing his enchanted hammer as hard as he can. The other members of the team battle other beings/constructs taken from different time periods, easily defeating their foes. Iron Man manages to fool Kang and blasts an entrance into his fortress. Thor is left behind as the other five members join Iron Man inside the fortress. Upon confronting Kang, they discover he has dispersed time bubbles around his command center so that they run the risk of appearing anywhere and anyplace in history. The Beast is the most cautious, crawling around Kang’s computers in an attempt to decipher their workings. Kang warns him not to touch anything and that he plans to let the Beast live because the Beast is blue and Kang likes blue. Due to their stepping in and out of portals, the Avengers soon are battling beings from across time and space that have followed them back to Kang’s future fortress. Then all time-lost beings disappear, due to the Beast’s gaining control of Kang’s computers. Kang is quite cross at being double-crossed by the furry, blue Beast. The Beast then activates a set of time portals and disperses Kang’s body across seventeen time/space dimensional portals. Their foe defeated [apparently ‘for good’], the Avengers prepare to return home.

What is the weirdest thing is that as a teen I remember reading a comic with similar happenings and thought maybe Marvel had novelized a story run from the Avengers comic. However, I have yet to locate the storyline I thought I read, so my fevered brain must have transferred the prose into comic book format in my mind’s eye.

I think this novel must have been written more for adults in mind than children or teens; it has some strong language in parts [as well as some blasphemy], and it has an actually surprising amount of sexual innuendo [which I obviously missed the first few times I read it] as well as referencing marital coitus between the Vision and ‘his’ wife Wanda [which was quite funny upon reading it this time around]. I grew up reading the Hardy Boys, Tom Swift, Tom Corbett Space Cadet, and some other series [Rick Brant, maybe?] plus various Lassie books, the Black Stallion series, and one other book series I don’t currently remember [also the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder], so I am not sure how much I can discuss the books geared towards teenagers in the 70s or 80s. But I would say this book seemed to have a more ‘adult content’ to it than, say, the comic books themselves of the 70s. I think Claremont and Byrne started introducing ‘more adult-themed’ storylines into the X-Men in the late 70s, but I digress. Out of the three novels I have read from this series put out by Marvel, I think this was the best one of the three [I remember reading one where the Hulk battled some creature from the stars and the one with Iron Man titled ‘Call my Killer . . . Modok!’]. It was just weird [and a bit jarring] to ‘see’ [read] the heroes uttering verbiage not used in the comics [at least, not in the comics of the 60s, nor in the 70s, which is when this book was written].

It is SO obviously dated as to be hilariously funny. At least they could have looked into the future to try and ‘predict’ what kind of advanced technology the Avengers might have been using. They had Ton Stark on their team, for Pete’s sake! The guy is always supposed to be thinking of the future and building futuristic devices! Instead, we get to read about the Beast exchanging eight-track cassettes on the Avenger’s Quinjet to listen to music! Oh, my stars and garters! It was too hilarious! Not only that, but instead of having security cameras that filmed them being attacked at the mansion, they had to listen to an audiotape of the attack! Iron Man has to reweave a strip of tape into the computer so they can listen to the attack! Od’s blood! My sides nearly split with laughter as I read about this dated technology. At least sci-fi from the 50s and 60s talk about using data spools instead of tape!

The author must have had some bad experiences with Christians – there were a few disparaging references to Christians and Jesus scattered throughout the book. Which is kind of interesting, considering Thor is the Norse god of thunder and the number of alien races scattered throughout the galaxy; I think most sci-fi authors could easily avoid including monotheistic religion[s] in their writings as those types of religions do not leave much room for alien races to exist. In addition when one considers the character of God and how it talks about how all creation suffers from Adam’s sin, I find it hard to believe there would be extraterrestrial life elsewhere because it is not just for an alien race to suffer because the crown jewel of God’s creation sinned and fell short. At the same time, some of the more interesting sci-fi stories I have read have tried to incorporate Christianity meeting alien races and how they handle it. But I digress again.

The conversations are obviously an attempt to mimic the banter and byplay of the comics. I did not find it annoying, but it is different to see it in a prose format as opposed to the page of a comic book. I think the author did a good job [overall] with the verbiage amongst the heroes.

I do not remember Kang being insane in the comics, but that is the direction in which the author went with this story. There was also a nice discussion about Kang’s backstory, which included references made to the Fantastic Four. I am not sure if Thor’s abilities have changed in current comic book continuity, but this story took place before Thor lost the ability to use his hammer to travel through time as well as space. [Granted, with the Beyonder restoring ‘ALL’ of his hammer’s abilities during Marvel’s second Secret War, it would be interesting to see if any writers will ever use that storyline to say Thor can move through time as well as space once again].

Overall, still a fun read.

بخوام خلاصه بگم کتاب down time و up time های خودشو داره با پایانی ضعیف.

I ordered the paperback the day after the Loki finale. It had been on an Amazon wishlist of mine for a decade.

It’s my favorite author of Iron Man comics (minus his artist partner, Bob Layton—who is credited in the acknowledgments “for the spark that became the plot of this novel, and for help choreographing certain of the action sequences.”)

The lineup of the Avengers is pretty similar to the MCU (and X-Men movies) now:

Thor, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Beast, and Iron Man.

So not only did I envision the current MCU, but I also saw eerily similar details to things that have gone on there. (Also, this 1979 paperback is coming out as an audiobook in September 2021).

All in all, good pulp writing with witty, irreverent dialogue.

—-

FYI: It’s somewhat culturally dated (in its portrayal of ‘Eskimos’). But it’s not as tone deaf as I feared it would/could be.

A little cheesy with the one liners but overall, a fun Avengers adventure. I have to give props to the author for his vocabulary; I feel like I haven’t seen some of these words since reading the classics. Not many authors these days write above a middle school level; they can tell a mean story but they’ve toned down the language that was drilled into our heads while studying for the SATs.

David Michelinie is a great writer who’s written some truly outstanding Avengers story. This one isn’t bad, and he certainly knows the characters, but I found the pacing and plot of the book a little odd. The main villain, Kang, would be an interesting surprise if he wasn’t shown on the cover and in the blurb, but since he is, it seems odd not to introduce him until halfway through the novel.

Hokey dialogue. Pulp quality writing.
Too many mutants (Beast, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver ... or, at least, they were considered mutants at one time ... don't know if they still are.)

But still ... I have to give nostalgia evoking material like this passing grades. Excelsior, Nuff Said and all that.

This extraordinarily bad book barely has no plot, and indeed is basically two connected novellas. Michelinie is a pretty good comic book writer, but has no gift for prose. Dozens, maybe hundreds of paragraphs can be read for their first sentence and the rest skipped with the continuity remaining clear. The second half suddenly becomes humorous fiction, which is the only way that I can understand such oddities as the Richard M. Nixon Massage Parlor and the exclamation “By Arthur’s codpiece!” spoken by a medieval knight. The constant bickering by Quicksilver becomes quickly tiresome and so does slowing down the narrative by giving the backstory of each character. The story meanders, as books with not enough plot do, so the big confrontation at the end feels tacked on rather than inevitable. You do not need to read this book.
