Love for Beginners

Rate this book
When Emma Harris wakes up from a coma, she learns that her fiancé and her BFF have fallen in love, she’s lost her job, and the life she knew is gone. Overwhelmed but grateful to be alive, she decides to start over from scratch. Not as easy as it sounds, of course. But she’s never been a quitter, even if she wishes she could quit rehab, where her hot but evil physical therapist, Simon, puts her through the wringer.

Desperate for a new start, Emma opens a doggy day care. Unfortunately, the only space she can afford is owned by her childhood nemesis Ali Pratt. But hey, she’s been through worse, right? She tries to roll with the punches, but a friend drops his grandpa off at the doggy day care because he can’t find senior care. On top of that, she and Ali bring the term “frenemies” to a whole new level. And then another grandparent shows up. And another.

In the midst of all that, Emma realizes she’s accidentally fallen for her Evil PT. But the most horrifying thing of all is that Ali just might have turned into the best friend she’s ever had. And as Emma grows from the pain of her past and takes on her new path, she comes to learn that life isn’t what you’re given, it’s what you make of it.

Jill Shalvis is a NYT, USA Today, and Amazon Top 100 bestselling author of small-town romance and romcoms, known for big feels, found family, and plenty of shenanigans.

If you love small-town chaos, meddling friends and neighbors, sizzling chemistry, and heroes who fall hard for the one woman they absolutely did not plan on, you’re in the right place. Jill’s books blend laugh-out-loud moments with emotional gut punches, slow-burn tension, and deeply earned happily ever afters.

She writes the stories she loves to read: small-town romance and romantic comedies packed with heart, heat, second chances, grumpy/sunshine sparks, and the kind of found-family vibes that make you want to move right into the pages. Many of her series are perfect for binge-reading, and a number of her books are available in Kindle Unlimited and at major retailers.

When she’s not writing, she’s probably plotting new ways to torture her characters, avoiding laundry, or daydreaming about fictional men and the strong, complicated women who bring them to their knees—and then making them work for it.

My first Jill Shalvis and what a sweet success it was! A huge thank you to Goodreads Giveaway for the win!

How Sweet it is!

After surviving a tragic accident that left her in a coma, Emma Harris awakes in need of rehabilitation. Enter, Simon, her harda$$ PT. What’s not to love?!

Emma is strong, hardworking, and full of life. No matter what was thrown at her, she will persevere and persevere, she does! With Simon’s help, she takes baby steps, and then she’s making even bigger strides. The chemistry between these two is off the charts. It’s no wonder they can’t fight those feelings!

Then there’s Allie, Simon’s cousin, who is stubborn, difficult, and closed off. Though she pushed her now ex-boyfriend Ryan away she regrets it. If only they could find a way to accept each other for who they are.

The seventh book in the Wildstone series, Love for Beginners was my introduction to the series and Jill Shalvis. Boy am I glad I entered this giveaway! What a great win! Though this was my first book in this series, it won’t be my last.

TITLE: LOVE FOR BEGINNERS
AUTHOR: Jill Shalvis
SERIES: Wildstone #7
RELEASE DATE: June 8, 2021
GENRE: Women's Fiction, Contemporary Romance
THEMES & TROPES: Smalltown Romance, Accident, Coma
RATING: 4.5 STARS
CLIFFHANGER: No

You know what? I know, I've said it before but Jill Shalvis is an automatic winner for me. She delivers without fail. I read another book recently that had a heroine who was in a coma and her fiancé and best friend fell in love with one another while the heroine was unconscious. Quite the coincidence, I was hoping that the stories wouldn't be too similar. Thankfully they weren't.

I need to point out again that these are categorized as women's fiction but have strong romance elements. To me they are contemporary romance with an additional female voice. But in every book we meet strong women who let fate take control of their lives, no, they are the captains of their...uh...life/ship.

This time we meet frenemies Emma and Alison and Alison's cousin Simon. After an almost fatal accident Emma is slowly returning to a somewhat normal life with the help of her physical therapist, Simon. While her body is healing, her mind takes a bit more work - Emma struggles with a severe case of survivor's guilt and with that comes an inability to accept that she's worthy of being loved. Simon, who loves his job as much as he hates feeling trapped after becoming his father's caretaker when his dad had a stroke, has a similar issue. He's so busy with all aspects of his life that he doesn't think there is room enough for a woman. Especially for someone like Emma, who he is falling for a little more every day. He admires her strength, her resilience and stubbornness, that she doesn't give up and how she soldiers on despite some setbacks. Likewise, Emma can't help falling in love with Simon's dedication to his family, his kindness and the mix of gentleness and bossiness.

And then there is Alison. You can see from the start that these two could be great friends. Alison is a super-introvert and hides behind a tough exterior. But if you look closer you see that she's all gooey inside, a soft soul that can be easily hurt. I loved how Emma and Alison got rid of their baggage and made room for friendship. They were more similar than they cared to admit in the beginning.

You know what you need?”
“More wine?”
“A plan,” Emma said. “A plan to win him over with your smartassy, bitchy brilliance.”
Alison was speechless for a full minute. Her throat actually felt tight.
“What?” Emma asked.
“That’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.”

Alison's boyfriend broke up recently with her and it was plain as day that both of them weren't happy about it. Over the course of the story Alison it becomes clearer that Alison isn't the only guilty party and I was glad to see that Ryan learned from his mistakes as well.
I love the strength of these women and this author knows how to write good guys who are also a little bit alpha that makes them so sexy.

"You’re one of my very favorite people, Emma.”

Shalvis's stories can get a little angsty but her sense of humor is present at all times. And as per usual, it wouldn't be a Jill Shalvis book if there weren't dogs and geriatric family members providing some comic relief. Hog, an emotional support dog who needed an emotional support hooman was such a cutie. I love how these animals all have their individual personality traits. I also adored the family dynamics between Alison, Simon and Dale. They were such a tight-knit bunch.

Jill Shalvis really has struck gold with this series. The books in the Wildstone series are special and LOVE FOR BEGINNERS is just another wonderful addition to it. All the books in this series can be enjoyed as complete standalones.
“Have you ever loved someone so much that when they smile at you, your heart stops? Because that’s how it is with you, Emma, from the first day I met you."

Love for Beginners is a wonderful book. It has more than romance. It is also a friendship. This book speaks so much volume for me. The romance between Emma and Simon is sweet. I love Simon. Miss Shalvis also putting a story for Emma and Ally. These 2 women are just wow!

Due to small misunderstanding between Emma and Ally, they lost their friendship. When Emma got into a nasty accident and needs a place to stay and a job, she found it with Ally. Their journey of second chance friendship is not easy one. At the end, they got it. I also love seeing Ally and Ryan. Ryan is such a wonderful guy. My type of guy with a lot of patience in his heart.

Overall, a wonderful read.

Is it settling if you’re happy being 90% happy?

I’m not sure anyone expects to be 100% happy, content and satisfied. By looking for little pleasures and finding satisfaction from simple things are we settling? Should we be looking to achieve great things or set huge and sometimes unrealistic goals? I know that I’m happy with my family, a good book, a couple of coffees a day and the occasional glass of wine. But … should I want more? Am I settling for mediocre by not wanting to live in a mansion or run marathons?

Jill Shalvis has written a story that makes you think about what you are willing to settle for in life. Is working yourself to the bone going to make you happier? Will keeping your emotions locked down, stop you from being heartbroken? Is survivor’s guilt a reason to only accept 90% happiness? I loved that this story made me stop and remember to make the most of each day and find my happiness wherever and in whatever way I want.

Love for Beginners is about a woman recovering from a traumatic accident trying to find her new normal while also trying to protect her heart. Love for Beginners is about a Physical Therapist trying to be everything to everyone while also juggling meeting the love of his life. Love for Beginners is about another woman who wears suits as her armour and a scowl to hide her real feelings. And finally, Love for Beginners is about a bloke who pushed the love of his life away because it all became too hard. Two couples, two love stories and two emotional journeys to happiness.

So, Emma is recuperating after an accident and her PT is Simon who also happens to be his father, Dale's carer. Simon also happens to be running the family business while his father recuperates with help from his cousin Alison. Alison is the suit wearer who broke up with her boyfriend and realised she lost him because she gave him the impression she wasn’t emotionally invested. Ryan is the boyfriend who found it too hard to keep Alison happy while also keeping all his friends and family happy too.

OMG!! ^^^^^THAT^^^^^ was the worst description EVER for Love for Beginners. There is a lot going on in the story, but I’ve made it sound a lot more convoluted than it really was. Basically, it’s about two couples who need to find their happy place. My new Goodreads Shelf will be Simultaneous Romance - two romances are playing out at the same time in the one story with connected characters.

Jill Shalvis did a wee bit of a number on my emotions with this one. Luckily, I’m an early reader and my boys sleep in because if my boys could have seen me this morning, they would have found a blubbering mess. I get so emotionally invested with the characters in the Wildstone series and each instalment leaves me rung out. I loved the journey the characters took me on, and it was a great reminder to not accept 90% happiness … but it was also a great reminder to not set unachievable goals. Sometimes, you can feel just as satisfied walking to the finish line as sprinting.

While I really enjoyed Love for Beginner, there were a couple of things that stopped it from being Jill Shalvis’ best. There was a blink, and you will miss it mention of Covid-19 that threw me for a loop. I had no idea that this story was set through the pandemic because there was not one mention of masks. Maybe it was wishful thinking of what the world will look like once everyone has received the vaccinations??? The ending seemed rushed, and all the conflicts seemed to fix themselves too quickly. I felt like I didn’t get enough time with the couples in their happy places.

Anyways, I mostly loved Love for Beginners and would definitely recommend to Jill Shalvis fans. The characters were lovable, the storyline captivating, and the love stories left me with warm fuzzies. Special mentions must go to Dale and Hog. Dale was a lovable pain in the butt and Hog was an emotional wreck of an emotional support dog. Nobody …or no dog … is perfect and sometimes being imperfect makes them perfect.

This was great! Over the past several years I have become a huge fan of Jill Shalvis’s writing so there was never a question as to whether I would want to read this book. I have had great luck with these books set in Wildstone and this book was no exception. The Wildstone series can be read in any order since they are really stand-alone novels set in the same town. I enjoyed getting to know the group of characters featured in this book.

Emma is finally ready to start her life over. She survived a terrible accident and has had to fight hard to get where she is. While she was in a coma, her best friend and fiance hooked up with each other so she has had to learn how to make her body do what she wants it to do and find a different support system. She moves into an apartment that her physical therapist told her about. Simon, her physical therapist, lives with his father in the same building and sparks fly every time Emma and Simon cross paths. Emma soon encounters someone from high school that she did not get along with, Allie, who also happens to be Simon’s cousin. Allie is dealing with her own issues in the romance department. Allie and Emma form an unlikely partnership and decide to open a doggy day care.

I loved the characters in this book. All of the key characters have had a lot to deal with and are doing their best to move forward. I loved the fact that we get two romances in this book. Emma and Simon had fantastic chemistry with each other and I thought that they made a fantastic pair. We don’t see quite as much of Allie and Ryan but I loved seeing them work things out. Simon’s father, Dale, had his own challenges as a result of a stroke and I loved what he added to the story. And the dogs! Hog and Killer were both great characters with distinct personalities and they both played a large part in the story.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this book had the perfect amount of romance, humor, and wonderful characters. I will definitely be reading more of Jill Shalvis in the future.

DNF and maybe later plus a big dose of It's me not you.

Characters weren't likeable enough to distract me from the current barrage of bad news that is making 2021, 2020's other evil twin.

It does have a flatulent, scaredy-cat St. Bernard though.

I got to about 15%, so past the sample since this was on loan from my local library. I just wasn’t feeling it. I didn’t realize going in that this is book 7 in the series, but I realized that pretty quickly because it felt like I should know some of the side characters. I’ve actually read two books in this series, but not enough to not still feel a little lost. I didn’t like that the mcs had known each other for over a year and that while the feelings are shifting into something more, I felt as though I was going to miss that fun newness of it all…which is usually my favorite part. Moving on!

4.5 - "Life’s too short for bullshit." Stars!

We return to Wildstone for book seven in the series; Love for Beginners giving us Simon, Emma & Alison’s stories. All of them get a POV and as with the books in the series all of them are linked together.

"I’m off men."

Simon and Alison are cousins, Alison and Emma are frenemies and business partners, and Emma and Simon are working towards being a couple, but with him being her PT after her life changing accident, things are a little complex. Doesn’t help that neither of them thinks they are worthy of a loving relationship. Alison is also carrying a trailer of her own baggage around as well so it’s quite the story!

Surely there was more to life than just trying to survive it…

I think one of the things I love about this series is that each story usually deals with three of my least favourite things in books; heavy issues/life changing events, familial drama and the inevitable angst that is the fall-out from those things in such a way that I don’t really feel like that’s what I am reading. Jill may have stepped away from the light-hearted contemporary romance a bit with Wildstone, but it still has all of her trademark humour and self-depreciating characters that you don’t feel bummed out from what you are reading, there are still a few giggles, funny situations and adding pets is always a win too, and you get a couple of gems in this instalment.

"You make me smile. You make me laugh. You make my day…"

Lots going on, lots of secondary characters, and a storyline you can’t help but be invested in it’s outcome for all of them. I’d love a Christmas novella on how Ryan and Alison initially got together, so I hope that the author has plans for that at some point, it was referenced a few times in LfB, and I think it would make a perfect seasonal read.

3 very confused stars. Could be more, could be less, who knows?

These Wildstone novels are delightful and the best Shalvis has written in years; the women’s fiction bent suits her well and she still privileges the romance enough that the books, especially the latter entries, feel like straight up genre romance. And this book is delightful, too! Yet there’s a surprise “but!” that I did not see coming.

About halfway through the novel there’s a mention of how COVID-19 has made it difficult for people to just go into hospitals to visit people and it completely threw me off because up until that point there was no indication that this novel was set during the pandemic.

“She got dropped off at the hospital, where she tried to get info on Simon’s dad. But HIPPA laws, not to mention COVID 19, had changed the way one could walk into a hospital and get information on a patient.”

I mean, maybe there’s a strong hopeful streak here and since this is a June release the book assumes by then we will be in a post-pandemic world, but right now, it was weird. If the choice is between a fantasy world in which the pandemic never happened, and a pretend post-pandemic, everything-is-normal-again world, I’ll take the former every time. It could also be that the book is set in the present and in the middle of the pandemic, in which case this whole town is filled with dangerous, irresponsible people because no one wears masks, there’s no social distancing, the heroine works at a highly successful (!) doggy daycare (!!!) the hero’s dad is high risk and he keeps interacting with people up close and personal…they’re all going to die!

I don’t like writing early reviews but I really don’t know what to do with this book. Just that one mention of COVID-19! Nothing before and nothing after! I can’t cope. Aside from that, I really liked the book, but usual disclaimers: Shalvis does love an all-white fantasy small town, the books are very formulaic, and this one deals with a heroine recovering from a coma and there’s plenty of stuff about how she’s an inspiration and how her true grit and sunny disposition got her walking again, so it may be ableist as fuck, but I’m not informed enough to tell.

After being hit by a car, Emma spent 2 months in a coma and almost a year in a rehab facility. While she was re-learning to walk, her fiancé cheated on her with her best friend so now Emma needs a new place to stay. Thank God for her PT Simon, who not only helped her get through this year but also found her an appartment near his.

Simon adore his job as a PT but after his dad suffered a second stroke, he had too keep it only part-time to become his caretaker and take on his dad's company.

Alison is Simon's cousin and still dealing with a painful breakup. She loves Ryan but doesn't see how she could get back with him since they're so different. At least she have work to get her mind off her sadness. But wait... Her cousin want her to rent the space she own to her high school nemesis, Emma Harris for her doggy day care!

The characters in this book all have their own personality and were a joy to read about, whether they had two legs or four and fur😛. Difficult to not be amazed by Emma's determination and good spirited, even after all she went through. Difficult to not be charmed by Simon perceptiveness and dedication. Difficult to not be amused by Alison's stubbornness and her not-so-quite antisocial attitude. Difficult to not fall in love once again with the Wildstone series.

The Wildstone series is a favourite of mine and I was glad for the opportunity to return to  this beautiful coastal town. The beauty about this series is that each installment is self contained, so each book can be read in any order one chooses.

In this installment we meet Emma, who recently awoke from a coma, after a horrible motor vehicle accident. She woke  to discover that her life would never be the same. Her fiancée dumped her for her best friend, and she needed to prove to everyone, including herself, that she would be on her feet in no time. Failure was not an option. Simon, her hard ass physical therapist (her private nickname for him) had every intention for her to succeed.

I had a wonderful time with this book. The friendships forged along the way, the romance, the characters and the banter made this book a joy to read. Readers who love dogs are in for a treat. We get not one but two romances. Both had their share of struggles. However, I loved how they both worked out in the end. We see Emma and Alison, her nemesis from high school, becoming business partners and in time a friendship developed.

I loved how the characters grew throughout the story. Emma’s strength and determination shined throughout the story. She made me proud, watching her defy the odds. Simon was adorable, always willing to take care of everyone, no matter the cost to his personal life. I have to admit though, there were few times his actions showed his cluelessness in relation to his relationship with Emma.

Conclusion/Recommendation

Love for Beginners delivered a story that warmed my heart and had me smiling in the end. Readers looking for the perfect summer read should add it to their reading list. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

I’ve read all of Jill Shalvis’s Wildstone series and Love for Beginners is my absolute favorite!

There’s just something about Emma’s vulnerability and strength that drew me in from the start. Jeez, talk about living hell--waking from a coma to find out your fiancé dumped you for your best friend and roommate, and having to live with them temporarily because where else are you gonna go? God, just shoot me now!

Even without a job, a place to live, and still trying to recover, Emma never gives up. She’s bound and determined to live the life she wants. And if that life just so happens to involve her physical therapist, Simon, then she’s got not much to complain about.

From every interaction, I adored Simon and Emma’s relationship. It was smart, fun, sexy, and real. As was the enemies to friends relationship between Emma and Ali. The banter and snark between these two feisty, strong willed women was so much fun to read—especially when they retracted their claws and realized that they were a lot more similar than different.

I adored Love for Beginners at the start and I couldn’t keep the smile off my face as I devoured it one rainy afternoon. Even though it’s part of a series, it truly is a standalone. One-click it for your next book, you won’t be disappointed! ~ Missy, 5 stars

4.5/5

It should be no secret that I am officially in love with both the Wildstone series and the writing talents of Jill Shalvis. Love for Beginners is such a great addition to the series, and it tackles the tough topic of what it's like to rebuild your life after a tragedy. Emma's character is one of my favorites so far, and I loved her strength and perseverance in the face of so much loss. Of course, we don't just have her viewpoint though, there is also her nemesis Ali, and Ali's cousin Simon. I loved the mix of the 3, although it is probably clear that Emma's POV was my favorite. Also, the doggy daycare was a completely adorable aspect, and on top of that, I adored Ali's and Emma's dogs! This might have been the cutest thing in the whole series to this point, and I loved everything with the daycare and the dogs. I also love that Shalvis always starts each chapter in her novels with something interesting and this time it was a "step" that applied to the chapter you were reading. I think this is such a unique element in her books and I'm always excited to see what they will be.

I had to listen to the audiobook since I have listened to every one of this series, and once again Erin Mallon's narration was perfect. I really love her as the narrator for these books, and she has narrated all of them but the first 2 now. It has made her one of my very favorite narrators and I always think she does an incredible job. Never mind the fact that she has also narrated 2 of the 3 books in The Friend Zone series which has just further cemented her status in my favorites. Long story short, if you like audiobooks I would highly recommend this series that way!

Love for Beginners makes for a great beach/summer read, not only for its gorgeous cover but also because it has everything you need. A little family drama, humorous moments, summery vibes, and some struggle where the characters learn something new about themselves are all hallmarks of what I love to see in this type of read, and this book brings all of that and more. If you haven't read a book in this series yet that's not a problem and they are all stand-alones besides being set in the same town. Highly recommend it to all romance lovers who like just a bit of steam, and those who prefer a mix of humor with tears!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Jill Shalvis pens some of the loveliest prose in contemporary romance returns with Love for Beginners, a second chance at life story.

After waking up from a comma, Emma Harris must now face a new reality where her ex-BFF and ex-fiancé are now together and she must start from scratch while overcoming her physical limitations. Although her evil physical therapist will do everything in his power to help her succeed and perhaps even show her how to love again.

I know I can’t go wrong with Jill Shalvis when looking for pull at your heartstrings romance that include strong characters that make you want to root for. I loved watching Emma and Simon’s relationship unfold through its hot and cold back and forth along with the small town feel and the cute pets.

Love for Beginners is a standalone romance by Jill Shalvis. It is a second chance at life romance with a happy ending.

We return to Wildstone for book seven in the series. Love for Beginners giving us Simon, Emma & Alison’s stories. All of them get a POV and as with the books in the series all of them are linked together, having said that, you can read these books as standalone stories as well as out of order. Emma was in a very serious accident and ended up in a coma for months. When she comes out of the coma, she finds out that her fiancé is now living with her best friend and she has no job or way to support herself. She has a settlement that she can use, but she knows she needs to figure out something. Simon is her physiotherapist and he pushes her constantly. What she doesn't realize is that he is falling for her, but that is the last thing she wants. Simon's cousin is Alison (Ali). Emma and Ali have been enemies since highschool but circumstances pull them together and as they get to know one another, they become friends. Throw in a father with alzheimer's and some other older people that can't be left alone, some pets and a job that Simon doesn't want and there is a lot to make this story entertaining and enjoyable.

What a wonderful story about new beginnings, friendship, family and rolling with the punches. Emma has been through so much, but she is willing to say yes, when people offer to help her and she is so kind and caring that everyone wants to do just that. The romance between Simon and Emma is great. It develops slowly and their banter is great. Simon has his own issues to deal with, specifically learning to say no, not to take on everyone's problems and to follow your dreams. Then we have Ali, who has been angry at Emma for so long. For her to take a chance on them working together shows she is beginning to let go of this anger, but she has a long way to find peace. Jill Shalvis has created some wonderful characters, both the main ones and the secondary ones. There were some laughs, some serious moments, sadness, anger and love. I like that there is always a serious issue in these books and this one deals with survivor guilt. It is not a huge piece of the story, but is subtly woven into the story. I really enjoyed this story and once again, I recommend it to those who enjoy a romance with some serious issues and relationship building. Erin Mallon narrates this audiobook. She has narrated other books in this series, so I like that she is continuing. I very much enjoyed her performance as she does a good job with both male and female voices. Her expression and intonation made this a very enjoyable story to listen to. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

*I received a free copy of Love for Beginners. This has in no way influenced my voluntary review which is honest and unbiased.*

Shalvis still has it! This is a feel-good but still very realistic romance set in Wildstone, and I loved Emma, Simon and Alison. I also fell for Dale, and of course, Hog and Killer, too.

I love how Shalvis manages to bring everything together. People who seem like they could never be friends, strangers who need a little lift to continue on this strange and sometimes difficult path called life. Love in unexpected places, even when some of the characters worthy of love do things that are really stupid! Like not being able to share their feelings fully, for fear of being hurt. All of this is what also makes her stories not only incredibly relatable, but also so very realistic!

I'm betting Love for Beginners is going to be a summer hit this year, and hopefully, we'll all be able to go somewhere else than our own yard (or even town!) to read it in a favorite place we haven't been able to visit in a long time.

I...have complicated feelings about this. It was really readable which is why I read it so it definitely succeeded on that front and I liked how messy everyone was, but the B romance was underdeveloped and one final scene (that was excellent) where the blame is evenly distributed did not feel like adequate compensation for the female character thinking they were a failure for the entire book. The A romance was much better handled, though, and I appreciated that the ethics of it all were discussed at least. I know this series is more women's fiction than straight romance, but it's interesting to me how disconnected the books all are from each other. I don't mind it, but it's definitely not what reading romance has taught me to expect.

I have loved this whole series but love for Beginners was my all time favorite. I loved Emma and Simon so much the icing on the cake was Paw Pals a doggy day care. This story was everything you want in a sweet romance. Emma made the most of the life she was given and you are going to the fairy tale ending.
I gave Love for Beginners 5 stars you can read it as a stand alone but the other 6 books are great reads as well.

Sometimes a book just stands out for a particular thing or two. Jill shalvis always delivers great characters, but what I really enjoyed about this read was the dynamics between, well, all of them.

We're given a few potential romance stories, but also family, friends and age old enemies who find a way to make amends. I fell for Simon immediately, and loved watching his feelings for Emma grow, and enjoyed Emma's evolution. But it was Alison who grew the most. She both needed forgiveness, and needed to find grace, and she does both.

Another great addition to the Wildstone series and a fabulous book to add to anyone's beach read list for 2021. 5 stars and recommendation.

I just adore this series and always look forward to the latest installment. I read most of the books during the height of the pandemic and they brought me so much comfort. They’re all set in the same town but can easily be read on their own as each book focuses on a new group of people so if you’re hesitant to start because it’s a series you can definitely jump in. Per usual there’s a premise that sucks you right in, Emma has just woken up from a coma and her fiancée and BFF are now together. She’s focused on her recovery with the help of her PT, Simon and the sparks are flying with these two! I loved their chemistry and found them to be a perfectly believable match right away. You also have the side romance between Emma’s frenemy Ali as well and then the snark between the two women was also really fun. There’s also plenty of family drama and the author always handles messy family dynamics in the most engaging way, another winner from one of my most trusted authors.

This was my first time listening to the audio version instead of reading the print and I loved the narrator, Erin Mallon. Jill’s books always have a ton of humor and she really brought these characters and their sarcasm to life so definitely recommend that version of you’re curious!

What would you do if you had the chance to start over in life and in love? Emma Harris got that chance after coming out of a coma and finding out everything she knew and loved was gone. Her fiancé fell in love with her best friend, lost her job, and now she has to start over from scratch. Emma was lucky to get help from her physical therapist Simon Armstrong, when he finds her an apartment in his home. Her part time job at a doggie daycare turns into ownership but with strings attached. Her new partner is none other than her high school nemesis, Ali Pratt, who is also Simon’s cousin. The author created a really unusual situation for Emma and it’s a good thing that Emma has a new attitude and rolls with it.

The author has created another delightful addition to the Wildstone series and these characters have so much growing to do to find love and their way in the world. Both Emma and Simon are attracted to the other but they’re keeping it professional while she is his patient. But the undercurrents are too much and when they start spending time together on the rooftop, one thing leads to another, and before you know it, things get complicated. When Ali becomes Emma’s partner at the doggie daycare, they have to deal with their pasts and how to make their business relationship work and maybe become friends along the way. An added romance is when Ali is trying hard to improve herself to win back her boyfriend Ryan and prove that she can be more than the introvert she is. All these characters are a little stunted because of their past. They are always trying to please others rather than finding a balance of pleasing both themselves as well as others. With her usual with and humor, Ms. Shalvis has created an engaging and entertaining story about second chances. I always looked forward to her stories and this one was exceptional.

I have been enjoying the Wildstone series from its coastal setting to the characters we have met along the way. Each of the novels works on its own, from story to romance. In this tale we meet Emma Harris who wakes from a coma after being struck by a car while out running. While she beat the odds, it seems her BFF and fiance are now an item and life as she knew it has changed. It’s a time of new beginnings, but first she’ll need to overcome her physical limitations. Not to worry, Simon, her evil physical therapist, has no intentions of letting her fail.

I loved this story from the flunk-out support dog to Simon’s ornery dad. Shalvis has a gift for creating characters and situations that pull you in, tug at your heartstrings, make you swoon and leave you smiling. Love for Beginners had these elements.

Rose suffers survivors’ guilt, but is also determined to succeed. When her boss at the local doggy day care retires, Emma wants to buy the business, but that involves getting approval from her childhood nemesis Ali Pratt. I loved their back-and-forth banter and the secondary story involving Alison.

Simon loved his job as a therapist, but is juggling running his Dad’s business and home care needs. Simon is a sweetie who doesn’t know his own worth but takes care of those he loves. The chemistry between him and Rose was fun, sweet, and sizzled. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop, even if the hot and cold vibe drove me crazy.

From its small-town feel to the cute critters, Shalvis left me smiling and looking forward to returning to Wildstone. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Love for Beginners, the 7th book in the Wildstone series by Jill Shalvis, is a delightful, emotional, humorous, but also heavy story. This story truly has a bit of everything.

It delves into the trauma and challenge of moving past tragedy and rebuilding and redefining your life. It examines overcoming personal characteristics that are holding you back from what you want. Characters deal with being falsely accused, letting go of unforgiveness towards themselves and others in order to find healing, as well as making peace with new stages and circumstances in life.

Love for Beginners has friendship, romance, relevant life issues, older characters, younger characters and best of all, sweet, intuitive canine characters who steal the show. This story will make you laugh, swoon, get misty-eyed, and think. It is, without a doubt, a feel-good story that has it all.

Interesting plot.
Physical therapy. Stroke recovery. Loyalty. Guilt.
The unlikely friendship between Allison and Emma was best plot line surprise.
Rereading April 2024. I am cringing about some of the morality mentioned .. but the characterization (& plotting) is really exceptional.. 4.5 stars.
Objectionable language for sure.
Loved the dogs and all the chapter headings/titles.

Reviewed for Wit and Sin

Love for Beginners is a warm hug of a book. It’s sweet, has characters who are easy to like even though – or perhaps because – they are flawed, and all the relationships are ones you root for.

Emma survived being hit by a car, a coma, and defied the odds and learned to walk again. She’s grateful to be alive but her life has changed forever. I liked Emma’s spirit, her determination, and her sunshiny nature. She has a natural likeability but she’s also human with flaws and a bit of messiness. She’s still recovering physically and mentally and her biggest champion is her sexy physical therapist, Simon. Simon is the kind of hero who makes you swoon with his caring nature and talented hands. But Simon comes with a lot of ties and he’s spreading himself so thin in trying to keep promises to his family that he isn’t fully living. He and Emma have excellent chemistry and their romance is sweet with a hint of spice.

The third major character in this book is Alison, Emma’s high school nemesis and Simon’s cousin. Alison wears perfection like armor and she’s my favorite of the bunch. She’s an introvert and struggles to open up and make friends, which has led to her losing the man she loves. When she and Emma become unlikely business partners, it opens Alison up and helps her grow as a person. I wanted to see her find happiness and I had no doubt Jill Shalvis would provide a satisfying ending for her…after making Alison work for it, of course. All three main characters learn and grow over the course of Love for Beginners , becoming the people they’re meant to be, and their journeys are highly entertaining.

Love in all its forms plays a strong role in this book. Romantic, familial, and love between friends weaves through everything, connecting all the characters in the book. It would also be remiss of me not to mention Hog and Killer, two dogs who threaten to steal the show every time they’re on the page. The dogs are almost as important as the humans in this story and it made me smile and added another layer of warmth to this tale. All in all, I really enjoyed Love for Beginners . It’s a story of overcoming obstacles, living a full life, and opening yourself up to possibilities.

Loved it. You should read it. The End.

Seriously that should suffice. Don't you trust me yet? But in case you need more... Here we go..

You're in a coma for 2 months and when you wake up, you learn that your boyfriend and best friend of 20 years have gotten a little too friendly. What would you do?

Well that is the exact situation Emma finds herself in and as every self respecting person would do, she now has 2 new exes in her life. With no boyfriend and no BFF, she sets to completely rebuild her life from the ground up.

Her new life consists of a needy Saint Bernard, a smoldering physical therapist and her old high school nemesis. This is a story about unlikely friendships and new beginnings.

The characters are so well developed, even Hog the dog. I seriously loved that dog. He was so dependent on Emma, she named herself as his emotional support human 🤣 This book gave me all the feels and warmed my heart so much.

I was smiling, laughing and loving from beginning to end. This is my first book by Jill Shalvis, and I may have just added her huge back list to my cart. 🤫

One last fun fact, each chapter is named and if you've been following along you know I love that. PLUS most of them are mottos for life (like: It's about the little things) AND each chapter heading has a pic of a Saint Bernard ❤️❤️❤️

4.5 stars! Full of sass, imperfect people and lots of heart - this is the kind of book that fills your soul!⁣

Jill Shalvis has done it again! She makes me wish I lived in Wildstone. I have loved every single book and every single character in this series. Love For Beginners easily makes my Top 3 for the series!⁣

Emma Harris wakes up from a coma and finds her life as she knew it, gone. She’s lost her job, her fiancé and best friend have started seeing each other and her body is no longer the same. ⁣

I adored Emma’s tenacity and her unwillingness to give up. Faced with a difficult transition to essentially rebuild her life, she does the work and starts over. Her relationship with her PT, Simon, is the kind that gives you all the feels. They are just so good for each other. Each forcing the other to dig deep, face their fears and insecurities and take a second chance at love. Without a doubt, this is my kind of book!⁣

Love For Beginners is the 7th book in the Wildstone series but it can be read now. Each book is a standalone and they can be read in any oder. I highly recommend the entire series - I’ve LOVED them ALL! ⁣
