Elizabeth Verdick has been writing books since 1997, the year her daughter was born. Her two children, now ages 13 and 8, are the inspiration for nearly everything she writes. Before becoming an author, Elizabeth edited books for children and parents.
These days she writes books for toddlers to teens, and everything in between. She especially loves creating new board book series for toddlers—the latest series is Toddler Tools™, which helps young children and their parents cope with those tough times and transitions that happen every day (like naptime and bedtime). The Best Behavior™ series helps toddlers reach new milestones and improve their day-to-day behavior.
Elizabeth also enjoys getting the chance to look at the funny side of life in the Laugh and Learn™ series, which helps kids ages 8–13 get a handle on the social/emotional skills they’re developing throughout the elementary– and middle school years. Elizabeth lives with her family and five pets near St. Paul, Minnesota.
Small Walt Spots Dot by Elizabeth Verdick, illustrated by Marc Rosenthal is an adorable and fun tale to read during the long winter season!
If your child, or a child you know, loves trucks/cars and dogs, this is a must buy for them!
Full disclosure: I was given a free copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my rating in any way.
While Walt and Gus are just going about their work one snowy day, they spot a pup on the loose in a parking lot that they’re trying to clear. They call in reinforcement and try to catch the dog before she runs off, but she keeps giving them the slip!
When they finally catch her, they realize she doesn’t have a collar. Will the pup find her home?
Oh my goodness, everything about this little book is perfect. I mean, the endpapers are a beautiful blue and show a little trail of footprints that Dot made!
The artwork is so colorful and fun! The town reminded me of a snowy, softer, and quieter version of The Busy World of Richard Scarry. Young readers will love trying to spot Dot on various pages!
This book is just adorable all around! I loved that it was written with lots of sounds that were added in italics that will make reading this out loud even more fun!
If you’re looking for a heartwarming story for the winter months, I highly recommend snagging this one!
My grandson enjoyed having me read this Small Walt book to him during our recent visit. Small Walt is reminiscent of "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel" by Virginia Lee Burton (one of my favorite books to have my Nana read to me as a child).
This isn't the first Small Walt book I've read, and it (hopefully) won't be the last.
Small Walt is a snowplow with tons of heart. While he does have a driver, Gus, it's Small Walt who stars and steers these tales. In this one, the two are plowing away when they discover something unexpected—a puppy! This poor stray pup can't survive in the snow all by itself. So, Small Walt is there to do his best and help as he can.
The illustrations in this book are fun, detailed and give tons for young listeners/readers to watch and follow. They colors are bright and bold, and the images portray exactly the scenes and emotions. In other words, this is the type of book which kids will want to pick up on their own and flip through the adventure again and again.
This isn't only a book for truck, tractor and snowplow fans, but is simply a warming tale. It's hard not to feel for the puppy as they find it...and what a lovely dog it is! The problem will be something kids can relate to and sympathize with. The solution comes with thought, a little adventure and tons of heart. It's simply a lovely tale and just right to read during the upcoming, colder months.
Small Walt returns in this charming series with his pal Gus and a furry new friend. As Gus and Walt sing and plow together, they make sure to keep the roads safe for everyone. Then with a whoosh and a blur of fur, they discover a lost dog and the chase is on. Will this stray dog find a home? Of course, with Gus and Walt there's room for three!
Small Wal Spots Dot charms his readers with his determination and heart, and now with a new friend. Small Walt’s bold charcoal-like drawings, simple caricatures, catchy jingle, and simple, easy to read sentences makes this story a perfect read for beginning readers.
This is the latest in the SMALL WALT series. Walt the snowplow and his driver Gus are back and on this snowy day they rescue a dog. The snappy, action filled text and warm wintry illustrations share this adventure filled day as Walt and Gus plow their town and rescue a pup. A warm story to snuggle up and read on a cold winter day.
Whoa! What's that in the snow? A stray dog! Gus and Walt have their work cut out for them, plowing the sidewalks and parking lots so people can go where they need to go! But Walt spies something different - a dog, running free. Gus calls for back up but that dog is hard to catch. Walt to the rescue! But then - the dog is taken to the animal shelter! Will Walt ever see his friend again?
Small Walt and Gus are out plowing snow, and spreading salt, when they spot a blur of fur. The chase is on to rescue a lost pup in the snow. Once the pup is caught, and sent to the shelter, that is when Gus does something very thoughtful to Small Walt's surprise.
Perfect for a cozy winter story time. Sweet story about Walt the snow plow and his owner/operator Gus working together when they spot a stray dog. Illustrations are magical and reminiscent of Virginia Lee Burton books. A great read for kids who love tractors, dogs, snow, anyone!
This was the first Small Walt book I’ve read so I found it kind of random that a story about a snow plow ends up being about adopting a dog. I liked the sound words throughout the book.
