Este año me había propuesto leer más ensayo y divulgación y este ha sido el primer libro que he leído de ese tipo.
Es un conjunto de testimonios donde mujeres de diferentes partes del mundo, de toda clase, edad y orientación sexual cuentan no sólo lo que piensan mientras mantienen relaciones (ya sea con otras personas o consigo mismas) sino cómo son y sus diferentes experiencias, tanto las buenas como las malas. Algunos son muy buenos y divertidos, que muestran cómo las mujeres viven su sexualidad con toda libertad y seguridad, siendo dueñas de sí mismas, como debería ser. Y otros, son más duros y tristes (como los que hablan de abusos sexuales que, tristemente, son demasiados) que transmiten pena, rabia, impotencia y que muestran la educación patriarcal que recibimos las mujeres en la que sólo nos enseñan a servir y no disfrutar de nada. Ni siquiera del sexo. Y sin importar en qué parte del mundo vivas.
Sean como sean los relatos, en su conjunto resultan en un libro muy didáctico. He aprendido mucho y a la vez me he sentido identificada con las reflexiones, pensamientos y experiencias de muchas de estas mujeres, haciéndome sentir muy bien conmigo misma. Fue muy reconfortante.
No le pongo las cinco estrellas porque la mayoría de los relatos son de mujeres cishetero. También los hay de mujeres no binarias, lesbianas, bisexuales y trans, y también otros que hablan del poliamor o de relaciones no estrictamente monógamas y cerradas, pero no los suficientes. Creo que debería haber sido un libro mucho más equilibrado en ese sentido, la sociedad de hoy día lo hace no sólo viable, sino necesario.
Pero a pesar de esto último, lo he disfrutado muchísimo. Es maravilloso.

What a class act.
A book about what 51 women think about when they’re having sex? Yeah, I’m sold.
It’s no surprise that I absolutely lapped this book up. It’s a thing of beauty. Seriously, the cover, the writings, the topics covered, the accompanying illustrations with every single story and little bios about the authors so I can follow them on insta and make my walls pretty. Mwah.
This book is intimate and importantly not just an enthusiastic slinky fairytale. Some people discuss great sex, a lot actually. These parts are juicy and a pleasure (pun intended) to read. They’re genuinely sexy accounts because it’s genuine content, unlike scripted performative work which we see far too much around sex.
Lots of other accounts discuss real issues. How experiences such as FGM, rape, abuse and childbirth impact sex, and the dynamic which gender dysphoria, sexuality, monogamy, health conditions and age bring to the bedroom. These parts are tough to read, but if you feel up for it, I absolutely recommend.
To me, a personal accounts will always be more powerful than a formal educational piece such as a research paper or textbook page. Bearing this in mind, it’s no surprise that got Whitney Houston so emotional at this. I cried a lot, but not necessarily sad, gushy tears, more so, a this book is a thing of beauty single tear rolling teasingly slow down face moment. (Probs not in that elegant manner, but that was the mood.)
Women On Top Of The World is rich with detailed and representative accounts, stooning artwork, AND, healthy conversations about sex. She’s ticking all fuckin boxes here. Lucy-Anne has done an outstanding job curating this book and I know that I’ll absolutely be reading this over and over.

Well this book is overall pretty good and the art is gorgeous the title is incredibly misleading.
This book isn't about what women think about when they are having sex; it is is HOW women like to have sex. It isn't what goes on in a persons mind it is literally just the positions and acts that women like to perform or have performed on them. Again that is also an interesting topic as women are trained to not discuss such things but based on the title I didn't get a single page of what women THINK ABOUT when they are having sex.
Good book and I think it was brave of the women to be so honest but not at all what I hoped.
This book isn't about what women think about when they are having sex; it is is HOW women like to have sex. Es geht um 51 starke, mutige und sich selbstfindene Frauen die mich begeistern haben und berühren konnten. Jede einzelne auf ihre Art und Weise, die Illustrationen sind so stimmig und passen für mich meist sehr gut zur jeweiligen Frauen.
Der Schreibstil ist echt angenehm zu lesen, das Cover ist wunderschön und farblich so schön gestaltet.
Ich danke jeder Frau das sie ihre Herz, ihre Gedanken und ihre Gefühle geöffnet haben und uns rein gelassen haben.
Es ist tolles Buch welches ich wirklich weiterempfehlen kann, es zeigt das wir häufig nicht allein mit unseren Gedanken sind. Alles ist normal und wir sollten aufhören uns zu schämen!!! Das ist für mich fast die wichtigste Massage, sei frei und macht was euch gefällt!
Das Buch zeigt mir aber auch das es uns allem doch irgendwie gleich geht, wir machen uns um das gleiche Sorgen!

"Was wir lieben. Frauen* reden über Sex" ist ein Buch mit wundervollen Illustrationen von verschiedensten KünstlerInnen, viel Diversität und faszinierenden Geschichten der Frauen* über ihr Sexleben. Es war ein toller und sehr ehrlicher, stellenweise auch bewegender, Einblick in die Leben der Frauen*. Besonders gefällt mir die Tatsache, dass das Thema "Sex" auf so unterschiedliche Art und Weise wahrgenommen wird und dass deutlich gemacht wird, dass es nicht nur eine Art und Weise des "perfekten Sexlebens" gibt, sondern dass das von Frau* zu Frau* unterschiedlich sein kann.
Dinge wie die Häufigkeit, die Orte, die Vorlieben und vieles mehr wird zur Sprache gebracht.
Besonders gut gefallen haben mir auch die tollen Illustrationen, die sich mit den Themen der einzelnen Auszüge befassen. Es ist faszinierend zu sehen, wie auch in der Kunst mit dem Thema Sex umgegangen wird und wie vielfältig die Kunstwerke aussehen können.
Um einen kurzen Einblick zu erhaschen ist das Buch ideal, allerdings muss einem bewusst sein, dass es nicht nur positive Geschichten über Sex sind und es auch nicht dazu dienen soll sachlich aufzuklären und viele Informationen zu liefern. Mir hat ein wenig der Rahmen beziehungsweise eine Einordnung des Ganzen gefehlt. Außerdem ist es nicht unbedingt ein Buch, das man an einem Stück durchliest, sondern eher immer mal wieder ein paar Seiten liest.

I really liked this book. Each story brought to light topics, such as fantasies and sexual preferences, that we don't usually talk about as a society. Moreover it made a strong point on how porn and society elicit expectations on women, which are not realistic. A lot of the women in the book show us that it took a long time to find themselves and their sexualities, and that it's a in-progress journey.
It felt so validating and I think a lot of women can reflect in the passage spoken in the book. I really believe this is a must-read for both women and men, but especially for young women who are just getting started on their sexuality journey.

Está muy bien darle voz a las mujeres para que hablen de sus experiencias sexuales, pero al mismo tiempo es muy triste ver cuántas han sufrido abusos.

I found this book incredible.
I'm not going to lie: I bought it for the cover and the title. But once it arrived I became fascinated by the illustrations, and once I read it it fascinated me.
It's great to see that none of us, women, are weird, or built wrong, or have a problem. We are just different from each other, and there's noting wrong with that.
It was incredible to learn about what goes through other women's minds when it comes to sex.
Absolutely amazing. I recommend it.

Strange book title for the series of stories about women and their relationship to sex but really interesting to get a bit of insight to how each woman featured has learned and grown into their relationship with sex. A good spread of diversity in terms of age and location in the world however would have liked to see a bit more about non-heterosexual and trans experiences. We need a sequel!

In „Was wir lieben“ erzählen uns 51 Frauen die unterschiedlicher nicht sein könnten, etwas über ihr Sexleben, ihre Vorlieben, ihre Wünsche und Träume. Es handelt sich um Frauen, die zwischen 19 und 74 Jahren befinden. Die Frauen kommen alle aus unterschiedlichen Schichten der Gesellschaft, haben verschiedene sexuelle Orientierungen und jede der Frauen hat seine eigene Vorstellung davon, wie ihr Sexleben zu funktionieren hat.
Das Buch „Was wir lieben“ ist total schön aufgebaut :) Es gibt zu erst immer ein Zitat von der Frau zu lesen, um die es in der folgenden Geschichte geht. Viele dieser Zitate haben mich schon sehr zum Nachdenken angeregt und ich habe mich gefragt, was für eine Geschichte wohl dahinter steckt.
Diese folgte dann auf den darauf folgenden zwei Seiten. Und am Ende folgten wirklich sehr inspirierende und sehr gut getroffene Illustrationen. Diese haben mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen, vor allem weil sie einen Teil der vorher erzählten Geschichte echt gut wiedergespiegelt haben! :)
Das Buch ist in vier Abschnitte aufgeteilt Loslassen, Tabu, Fake und Vorspiel. Ich habe mich ungefär bis zum letzten drittel, in der ein oder anderen Aussage der Frauen wiedergefunden. Ich konnte mich auch ein Stück weit mit der ein oder anderen Frau identifizieren. Bei manchen Aussagen dachte ich mir nur: JA die hätte von dir kommen können. Ich denke zum Ende hin, hat einfach mein Alter und mein jetziger Stand im Leben dazu geführt das ich mich nicht mehr so wirklich darin wiedergefunden habe.
Bei vielen Geschichten musste ich beim Lesen echt kurz schlucken, weil manchen der Frauen einfach so grausame Dinge widerfahren sind. Und trotz allem haben diese Frauen es geschafft ihren Weg zu gehen und ihren Platz im Leben und vor allem in ihrem Sexualleben zu finden. Davon bin ich wirklich sehr beeindruckt, wie auch von der Offenheit der Frauen uns diese wirklich ehrlichen und schonungslosen Geschichten zu erzählen. Vor allem die Offenheit der etwas älteren Frauen hat mich sehr beeindruckt, weil das Thema Sex gerade in den älteren Generationen ja leider immer noch ein sehr großes TabuThema ist.
Ich konnte definitiv einiges für mich und mein Sexualleben mitnehmen und habe das ein oder andere hinterfragt.
Und Mädels? Seit selbstbewusst, traut euch zu sagen, was euch gefällt, was ihr von eurem Partner braucht :) Und wenn euch was nicht gefällt, traut euch nein zu sagen!
Und solltet ihr(was ich keinem von euch wünsche) eine unschöne sexuelle Erfahrung gemacht haben, vertraut euch jemandem an, holt euch Hilfe. Es ist kein Zeichen von Schwäche sondern von wahrer Stärke sich dem ganzen zu stellen!

Oh my god.....but not like that. What an INCREDIBLE book! I am totally blown away by the beauty of this book. The illustrations - so gorgeous. The words - so real and so beautiful.
Reading this book is a big sigh of relief. It’s so validating! I just adored it. I really can’t recommend this book enough to women.
I was so ready to be disappointed as there are so many contributors to this collection, and I thought it could be of quite mixed quality. On the contrary, it’s flawless (It’s also really diverse and inclusive).
Lucy-Anne Holmes, the editor of the book, has done a wonderful job. I would love to know more about how she found the contributors. Each of the contributors, I think there are around 100, have such strong and unique voices, but there are so many similarities, in a beautiful way. I think you will feel so seen if you read this book.
Equally, I’d really recommend this book to anyone who has sex with women! Or anyone who is interested in human sexuality, as a matter of fact.
I didn’t twig til I researched just now, but Lucy-Anne Holmes wrote one of my favourite books of recent years — “Don’t Hold My Head Down”- which I also recommend without reservation and everyone else who’s read has loved.
I think my favourite thing about this collection, ‘Women on Top of the World’, the most fantastic editorial decision that Lucy-Anne Holmes has made, is that it’s a compendium of female JOY.
Yes, there are sad and upsetting moments; that’s the dichotomy of experiencing anything wonderful. But the essays are just joyful, sensual, hopeful, glorious, ultimately. It’s a total unveiling. The fact that there are so many contributors, from across the world, from across generations, speaking with such depth of emotion and physicality - female sexuality is so real and so complex.
This book is a real keeper and I’ll be recommending it left right and centre. I’m also super tempted to buy another copy so that I can frame the artwork as prints and hang them on my walls..... The illustrators’ work is just gorgeous, I actually heard of this book via my favourite instagram illustrator, AlphaChannelling. They have all done an amazing job and the synthesis of words and illustrations has resulted in a totally divine piece of art. Copies for everyone for Christmas. Brava to all!
Reading this book is a big sigh of relief. It’s so validating! I just adored it. I really can’t recommend this book enough to women.
I was so ready to be disappointed as there are so many contributors to this collection, and I thought it could be of quite mixed quality. On the contrary, it’s flawless (It’s also really diverse and inclusive).
Lucy-Anne Holmes, the editor of the book, has done a wonderful job. I would love to know more about how she found the contributors. Each of the contributors, I think there are around 100, have such strong and unique voices, but there are so many similarities, in a beautiful way. I think you will feel so seen if you read this book.
Equally, I’d really recommend this book to anyone who has sex with women! Or anyone who is interested in human sexuality, as a matter of fact.
I didn’t twig til I researched just now, but Lucy-Anne Holmes wrote one of my favourite books of recent years — “Don’t Hold My Head Down”- which I also recommend without reservation and everyone else who’s read has loved.
I think my favourite thing about this collection, ‘Women on Top of the World’, the most fantastic editorial decision that Lucy-Anne Holmes has made, is that it’s a compendium of female JOY.

Dieses Buch dürfte ich bei einer Leserunde von @lovelybooks.de lesen und es wurde mir deshalb freundlicherweise im Ramen dessen auch zugeschickt. Da mein Post davor in eine ähnliche Richtung geht dachte ich es passt doch ganz gut 😉

Die Autorin Lucy -Anne Holmes hat in ihrem Werk mit 223 Seiten mit 51 Frauen in allen Altersgruppen und aus verschiedenen Ländern über das Thema Sex gesprochen. Es beginnt mit der Altersgruppe ab 19 und endet mit einer 74 jährigen.
All diese Frauen* berichten von ihrer Sexualität. Von guten und von schlechten Erlebnissen. Sie erzählen davon was sie beim Sex mögen und was nicht. Wie sie das erste Mal mit dem Thema in Berührung gekommen sind .
Das Buchcover finde ich sehr schön. Es ist so hell das es in der Buchhandlung sicher schnell ins Auge springt und hoffentlich viele neue Leser*innen findet.
Die Illustrationen der verschiedenen Künstler fand ich alle sehr toll gestaltet. Ich werde sicher die ein oder andere Instagram Seite besuchen um zu sehen was derjenige noch so gestaltet.
Ich fand dieses Buch sehr gut. Es war interessant all diese Geschichten zu lesen. Aber auch oft sehr schockierend . Dieses Buch zeigt wie sehr in vielen Kulturen immer noch viel zu wenig oder gar kein Sexualkundeunterricht stattfindet. Oder noch viel schlimmer das Thema Intimverstümmelung , Riten bei denen sich Frauen* für die Männer Kräuter in die Vagina schieben sollen . Es zeigt das Aufklärung ,auch gesundheitliche so verdammt wichtig ist.In Schulen auf der ganzen Welt . In der Öffentlichkeit ,im Internet heute immer noch und ganz besonders !
Auch das Thema Missbrauch ist in so vielen der verschiedenen Geschichten der Frauen zu lesen. Ob von fremden oder sogar eigenen Familienmitgliedern . Es ist absolut traurig und erschreckend wie viele Frauen so ein Erlebnis schon hatten 😔Die Bilder sind alle aus dem Buch ! Ich fand es sehr lesenswert und kann es jedem empfehlen !

This is a meaningful and brilliant collective work.
51 women from different countries and cultures, age from 19 to 74, have been through/is going through certain challenges and transforms, give their testimonies about how their sexualities are affected by cultures, parents, childhood experience, and the society. I think this is not just a book about what women think about when they're having sex. This is a book about the journey of women looking for what they want and their identity.
One 32-year-old woman who was FGMed in 2000 says that FGM affects her entire life. She had been struggled with her body image that she didn't feel she was woman enough or human enough. She felt she was doomed until she underwent restorative surgery in 2017. It was a rebirth for her.
I have read about FGM when I was in college. That was a great shock for me to learn that such "a rite of passage" with extreme cruelty exists. I felt so sad when reading someone who had suffered from it for 17 years.
There are several women in their 30s-40s wrote about how they're going through a tough time after giving birth. Their body change a lot, and they don't feel the way they felt before anymore. Women pay a great price on giving birth. Not only their career, life, body, health, and also their identity.
This is a great book for women to read. It compiles women from all ages and countries. There are some differences, but we can see a great similarities among all the women in the world: 1) society is conservative, doesn't prepare the women knowledge of sex but expect them to know everything when they are at the "right age." 2) Life changes a lot after women giving birth. 3) Human are always on the way finding a solution for their life.
I would like to mention the last second story as my conclusion. It was written by a 70-year-old ma'am. She's bold and brave. She said her wish to conclude her story, and I'd like to edit a little bit to conclude this review: Don't be afraid to want what you want when you want it on this journey of finding one's identity.

“Was wir lieben. Frauen* reden über Sex” ist eine Sammlung von 51 Perspektiven von 51 Frauen* und ihren Erfahrungen beim Sex. Lucy-Anne Holmes stellt dabei alte und junge Frauen* vor, aus den verschiedensten Ländern, mit den verschiedensten Hintergründen. Einige sind hetero, andere lesbisch oder queer, es sind auch nicht-binäre und trans Personen dabei. Eine sehr diverse Gruppe an Frauen* also, die ein breites Spektrum von Erfahrungen haben und alle eine eigene Position zu dem, was Sex ist oder nicht ist oder auch sein kann.
Sie alle erzählen verschiedene Geschichten, von streng katholischer Erziehung oder Eltern, die auch mal nackt herumgelaufen sind zuhause. Einige teilen ihre Missbrauchserfahrungen in der Kindheit oder der jüngeren Vergangenheit und wie sie ihr Verhältnis zu Sex neu definieren mussten (Triggerwarnung an dieser Stelle für alle, die das Buch lesen wollen, aber empfindlich sind, was die Erwähnung von sexuellem Missbrauch angeht). Die Frauen* schildern, wie sie Zweifel überkommen haben und sich selbst neue Grundsätze gesetzt haben, aber auch wie sie noch nie einen Orgasmus hatten oder denken, wie in Pornos performen zu müssen.
Das Buch ist unfassbar liebevoll gestaltet, die Erzählungen werden begleitet von passenden Kunstwerken ausgewählter Künstler*innen. Die Sammlung zeigt, wie facettenreich Sex sein kann und wie individuell jede Erfahrung und jede Vorliebe ist. Sehr empfehlenswert, gerade wenn es darum geht, dem Thema Sex näher zu kommen und die eigene Scham und das Schweigen abzulegen.

These kinds of books are so important. They break the tabous around sex, make women feel less alone with their thoughts and are just simply really entertaining too!
I loved the format of this book! I felt that the women in this book were really given a voice and a freedom to express themselves just as they were. I listened to it as an audio book and I must say it was very well read. I enjoyed the fact that there were multiple readers; it gave the women telling their stories more character.
I find it utterly sad and hopeless how many of these women went through abuse and/or had no idea about their own pleasure during sex. It makes me frustrated and angry that female sexuality is still not talked about enough, so that us women feel as if we "just have to suffer through it I guess". It says a lot that almost every woman out there has had the "I wish he was done already" experience.
But luckily there was also very empowering stories, stories that made me chuckle with joy for these people that had found what felt right for them and were loving their sexlives.
So all in all a very very good read! I would recommend this to anyone who is having sex with women / people with a vagina!

Me encanto el leer a experiencia de todas estas mujeres maravillosas, ame la forma en que ilustra cada una de las historias. Me he encontrado en sus sentimientos, en su dolor, en su frustración, en sus dudas y reflexiones. También he experimentado con ellas ese sentimiento de libertad, de empoderamiento y esa ilusión de hacerte de dueña de tu cuerpo. Ha sido una lectura liberadora en relación a la cantidad de coincidencias que he encontrado en sus experiencias, es como si te dijera: "hermana no estás sola"

The 4 stars are just because I looooved the line graphics, they were so good. From the drawings, to the whole image idea of the book. Each of the story had its own highlight of interesting insights plus a drawing trying to portray the experience from the person describing their own experiences. The diversity of people, not only on age but as different countries and sexual preferences is incredible; you could see how women can share certain frustrations, joys and pleasures without being on the same age, same place or with the same sex.
Not a fan of short stories, so I didn't enjoyed it as much as I could + was expecting something else from this stories. Still, I did had a good time wondering through these pages and getting to know these intimate experiences and learning about how every person is a new different world and our own contexts does not determine the way we satisfy each other and see these taboo topics as we are told.

Loved it. I would recommend taking your time with this book. You get a very intimate look into the head of 51 women and what they think about sex. These women are from different walks of life. They interviewed women all around the globe. There is queer rep in it and some heavy stuff like sexual abuse, rape and female genital mutilation. Nevertheless this book is amazing. It makes you feel less alone and you might learn something new. Every story is accompanied by an illustration by different artists. It‘s just a great experience. I also recommend listening to the podcast episode the author Lucy-Anne Holmes did with Hannah Witton on Wittons Podcast Doing it. That‘s how I found out about this book

Una heterogeneidad de voces que retrata el mosaico que es el placer femenino. Muestra lo diverso que es y, a fuerza de individualidades, subraya también los puntos comunes. Triste que uno de ellos sea que más de la mitad hayan sufrido agresiones sexuales. Ejemplifica perfectamente como el miedo y la violencia empañan la experiencia sexual para las mujeres.
A este retrato a voces se añade la acertada composición con ilustraciones de distintos/as artistas.
PD: El subtítulo claramente es un reclamo para lectores varones heterosexuales que ojalá funcione y se lean el libro.

Es un libro muy interesante pero no me encantó. Lo que más me gustó fue la variedad de testimonios que tiene de todo el mundo. Se pueden ver la cantidad de realidades que existen y cómo afectan en la vida de las mujeres. Pero me hubiera gustado que tuviera más reflexiones y qué tal he fueran historias más largas, conocer un poquito más a la mujer detrás del testimonio. Lo recomiendo igual para pasar el rato y conocer de las realidades que existen sobre la sexualidad, más de una persona logrará sentirse identificada

I bought this book from B&N thinking it will be a fun read, but it turns out to be my favorite book of the books that I read this year. This kind of book, providing perspectives from women on sex is so so so so so important. I appreciate this book, a lot and recommend other girls, women, to read it. The art is beautiful!

It’s a great book if you have any worries or concerns and it is just interesting hearing stories from women all around the world. Some of it was a bit dark and repetitive but I suppose that’s just the truth about the female experience isn’t it 🤷♀️

Super interessant aber an manchen Stellen sehr erschütternd. Es macht einem aber auch Mut und man kann einige Erkenntnisse für sich mitnehmen und fühlt sich nach dem Lesen nicht mehr ganz so seltsam oder allein :)
