Carl Heller is a Cowboy in a gasoline world. He walks the walk and don't say much anytime.
Carl's got a little piece of heaven up in Colorado. He runs a small herd of Texas Longhorns, running them loose in the foothills where there's plenty of grass to eat and not a lot of trouble to get into. He keeps a hand of horses, trained to steer cattle. He makes enough selling Longhorn steers to pay his taxes and any comestibles that pop up. He also occasionally takes the kind of jobs no-one else really wants to do and prefer to keep the lawmen in the dark. He doesn't charge for his services, but when the job is done he expects to be healthily rewarded for his work from a grateful client. He also seems to fall in love on the job nearly every time. There is always at least one little gal that's purtier than a newborn calf! Carl takes the time to be certain they understand how much he enjoys their labors on his behalf.
Frank Roderus writes a terrific Western set at the cowboys' last hurrah. This 1200 page compendium includes 6 full-length novels featuring Carl Heller and his friends. The storylines are redolent of the Old West, but in a turn of the century time when automobiles were replacing horses and impatience was the catch of the day leaving polite discourse fading on the rear stoop. When the Sheriff or Constables were unable or unwilling to help, Heller was the man to turn to.
Excellent reading from a fairytale time in America's past. Reminds me of Zane Grey or Louis L'Amour. Amazing good adventure. A great read!
