Rate this book
Making a haven for wildlife doesnt need acres of space in the countryside. If you get the habitat and planting right, then even the tiniest of urban gardens can host a variety of creatures from birds and bees to hedgehogs.

Covering everything from going organic, making a pond and how to turn your green space into a wildlife haven – this book is for gardeners who want to apply a more holistic approach to gardening and create their own urban sanctuary. Through a collection of simple projects that can be easily adapted for a variety of gardens and planting guides, this book will help you to re-connect with natural world on your own doorstep.

Jane Moore will draw on her 16 years of experience of creating an urban sanctuary in the heart of the city as she lays out the simple ways in which you can approach making even the smallest patch of land a haven for wildlife, great or small.

Gardening is my passion. I'm a hands-on head gardener, an award-winning gardening journalist and a regular speaker at gardening clubs and events. I'm a bit of a horticultural adventurer, embracing diverse challenges such as planting a National Collection, creating a small garden at Chelsea Flower Show and guest presenting on BBC Gardeners' World.
Gardening and writing about gardening have been my whole career. I have a wide-ranging practical experience, a broad plant knowledge and an unswerving enthusiasm for all things gardening.
As well as numerous awards for my garden writing I’ve also won the Relais & Chateaux garden Trophy for my garden at The Bath Priory and an RHS medal for the creation of ‘The Mini Garden’ at Chelsea Flower Show in 2003. I’m also lucky to have worked with famous garden designers including Arne Maynard, Cleve West and Diarmuid Gavin.

This was cute but I didn't realize this was for people in the UK so most of the wildlife and plants aren't native here.

A nice beginners guide, though I would have liked for it to provide a bit more depth or even introduction to some of the ideas it was mentioning.

this probably isn't intended to be read cover to cover, because I found it a bit repetitive in places, which I think is because if you're looking up specific information you'll want to have certain bits of information repeated multiple places. that said this is a delightful read and beautifully illustrated. as a starting guide for creating a wildlife-friendly garden it's very barebones - I'd have expected a few more plant suggestions - but on the other hand I imagine that having a pared down list of plants makes it less overwhelming to get started.

it's no secret that I want a garden of my own (and always have) but right now I'm feeling that longing very much. one day!!! until then I suppose I'll continue to buy and read the 'planting for' books as I come across them (I bought Planting for Honeybees: The Grower's Guide to Creating a Buzz on holiday in Cardiff two years ago, it's only fitting I bought this one now on holiday in York...)

Information that even a seasoned gardener would love to bestow on a bookshelf.

This book is so cute! It's filled with beautiful pictures and is well structured, easy to find just what you need to liven up your yard, or even if you just have an apartment balcony. Now, it is for the UK, and she specifically talks about the animals and bugs and plants for that region, so if you live in America or whatever some of these tips aren't very helpful, but there is still a lot of things that are universally helpful! She really did her research and explains things clearly and thoroughly, so I think especially if you're newer to gardening, or just getting interested in attracting birds to your yard, this would be a good jumping off point.
The only thing I didn't approve was a few of the plants she suggested are invasive and I still feel like that's a big nope.

am I reading the shortest books on my shelves out of embarrassingly reading only two books last month? regardless, I got some tips for my current back space and ideas for a more permanent garden of my own to make more wildlife friendly and aesthetically pleasing for myself :)

A pretty book with cute illustrations, but more relevant in some ways for European readers than American readers.

I did lots of rewilding in my garden last year, so nothing was particularly revelatory to me. Lovely to relax and read on a cold winter's night though.
If you’re picking up this book with no ideas where to start, then it's a great first dip. Also the book has a really 'boujee' feel (mine was the hardback version) and the illustrations are just delightful.
