My name is Cassandra Creed, and up until two years ago I was a cop.
Scratch that, I was the best damn magical detective in all of Mystic City- the youngest too.
But everything changed when I picked up the case of an underground magical drug being filtered through the city by a gang of vampires. I started turning over stones that were better left alone and it ended up costing my little sister her life.
Since then I've walked away from the law and worked as a freelance bounty hunter turned magical vigilante. After years of using my elemental magic above the law to stop mystical muggings and petty crimes I thought I was past the hurt and pain of my sister's death. But when the vampire gang responsible for my sister's death moves back into the city it's clear that I have unfinished ends to tie together.
I work alone, always have. But when the weight get's too heavy I have no choice but to enlist the help of a rogue vampire detective, the witch that runs the biggest crime ring in town, and a werewolf with a drinking problem.
I didn't want to let myself get distracted by their charm, but as they crawl into my bed I realize in life you don't always get what you want.
Even then, one thing is certain- I will get the head of my sister's killer on a silver platter. Even if I have to burn the city to a crisp to get it.

I couldnt help but think of Bruce Wayne (Batman) when i first started reading this book. Rich heiress left an orphan when her adopted parents & sister have died - check, Turns vigilante trying to find their killer-check and smart, witty english butler - check but thats where the similarities end. Cassandra (FMC) is a Ex cop as well as a witch and when she gets a disturbing and bloody message that sucks her back into a sadistic game with a killer clown that is on a mission to get rid of her by any means necessary. He will use also use anyone to get to her as well. With the help of her Ex GF Frankie, Ex police partner Cal and her next door neighbour/Dragon Dallas. Full of blood, sex and humour. You cant help but flaming love it!! I definitely did. So much
I have just finished on the Second book and might still be riding that high...I want to read the third book.
Cass has fire powers, I still don't know from where or have frankly forgotten.
Still, I love her personality...as one who is drawn to crazy personalities...she's foul-mouthed, hits first questions later, a Grey character, driven by the desire to protect her loved-ones, sticks to one regular fashion style, badass, does not tolerate bullshit, lives on the edge and has a high affinity for attracting troubles.
And I love that it has a genre in which I have not tried before, It's somehow an erotica given how many times her sex drive is called out on. She's also bisexual( I was yet to read on a Bisexual woman being the main character) and in fact loves hard!
It's writing is her voice and thought patterns which I enjoy in books, I love reading from the characters perspectives.
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
Up in Smoke is the first book in Storm Song's new reverse harem series, it's a little different from other books that she has written, a lot more snark and more dead bodies but it's an interesting start to the series.
Cassandra Creed is an interesting main character, she has dealt with so much trauma in her life that she covers up by making questionable choices. She is a foul-mouthed (which I love) loner that has a pension for violence. She is a morally gray character, she does hurt people, kill people but overall want to protect people even if she doesn't go about the best way to do it but in a city full of the corrupt where even the cops are criminals it's kinda, do what you gotta. Even with all of her many flaws or because of them, I like Cass and after everything that has happened to her, I hope she gets the justice she deserves.
Crazy draws crazy right? This is a reverse harem so let's talk love interests. There are three one of them being a female drug lord, another is a vampire that's a cop and the third is a surprise. Can't really say too much about them, don't really know how I feel about the guys but I have so much to say about the female. Crazy draws crazy right? While Cass is a little crazy Frankie, is full-on crazy and terrifies me to no end. Frankie is cool and as a friend would be a little dangerous but as a lover, watch your back on the best of days. There is something about the crazy characters that I like and Frankie is crazy, crazy. She is full of personality, life, love, drama, and violence, she loves fashion, is wicked smart, and is a (crime) boss in her own right. Frankie is quite unique and I enjoyed her character because I don't see many of them.
The story has so much promise, something was a little off to me that why the lower rating, I couldn't get fully immersed in the story and the relationships felt a little iffy to me but the idea of a magical city with a magical drug floating about, different supernatural factions facing off, and corrupt police all sounds amazingly good. I do want to continue the story, I always read the second book if the story has promise because things could improve, and because I am interested in what happens next. In this one things went Up in Smoke, next they're gonna go Down in Flames.
Cassandra has no family because she accidentally killed her biological parents as a girl with fire. Then, she was adopted at ten, and that family of fairies was drained of magic and their lives. Everyone assumes she died with her family. She hid out and worked with her old butler Alexander bringing about justice in the streets. She is looking for who killed her family and why. Fairies are turning up dead like her family had for the last two weeks. These cases mimic what transpired two years earlier. She has two exes she will have to contend with now that she is back! They will also help her scope out the situation. Both, are extremely dangerous. When Alexander is killed, and her mansion burned, someone calls her out knowing she is still alive. It all has something to do with her past…if only she can connect the dots and save the shifters and vamps from an all-out war. I received this as an ARC and am leaving a voluntary review.
I've tried to start three different books this morning, but have given up on all of them because the prevalence of typos and other grammar errors just takes me right out of the story. This was by far the one I gave up on the quickest. At least 10 major grammatical errors in the first page-and-a-half.
„Up in Smoke, by Storm Song, the first book in the Burning Bounty Hunter Series” follows Cassandra Creed a former cop and magical detective in Mystic City. Two years previous, while trying to dismantle an underground magical drug ring running by vampires, the gang retaliated by killing Cassandra’s sister and her live changed forever. She quit the force and put all her efforts into freelance magical bounty hunting, fully intended in avenging her sister’s death by pursuing the ones that cannot be touched by the law. It does not work, rarely does, but now two it seems as she finally would get her chance, as the very gang that killed her sister is coming back to the city. Cassandra is a lone vigilante, but when things get heated, she joins forces with a vampire detective, a werewolf whose normal state is “totally wasted” and the ringleader of the biggest crime syndicate in town, who also happens to be a witch. A team that could be misconstructed as the start of a very bad joke, it is in fact one of the most entertaining vigilante teams of all times.
Storm Song has succeeded in creating an enjoyable series, that offers captivating characters, and interesting plot and an overall delightful chain of events. The book is action-packed and fast-paced with humor and mature romance thrown into the mix (as the MC is depicted as bisexual, be prepared for some F/F scenes as well). A good story that will appear to UF mature readers in general and fans of graphic novels archetypes in special.
The MC is interesting enough with her motivation for finding who killed her family. She has multiple partners through out the book which is interesting I've never read a book like it. The sex it was okay, not the best described sex and was cringey at times. I kind of disliked how the author sexualized Frankie by the MC and the other people who saw her. Always bringing up her breasts and butt. Transitions felt awkward at times because they were focusing on something and the next thing y'know they're going at it. I wish we got to learn more about the world she's in because it sounds interesting. I know it's divided up between different sectors. I wish the relationships were built up more between the ones she loves but with her personality I think that's how she expressed herself. I question the part where Dallas supposedly spiked her drink but she didn't bring that up to him? That was slightly confusing. Then the part where her and Cal were having sex and Dallas broke in the cop car and she chased him. I still can't remember if she was naked as well or if she dressed herself and I missed it. Overrall it's not the best book I've read but I will read the second one because I do like the main plot and idea of it. I'm hoping the second one will be better and maybe we will see some character building.

I thought that the book was an excellent introductory book to the series, and that is what we got. The writing was good, and I thought it suited the tone the author was going for in this book. I did feel like we could have gotten a better ratio between inner-monologue/plot, as I thought that a lot of what Cass was thinking about/realizing could have been shown through the plot. It could have progressed or revealed itself in a way that could have provided a better opportunity for us as the readers to understand Cass more, how and why she responded. Overall, I enjoyed the characters introduced, especially Frankie and Cass, and am even more intrigued by the dynamic they have and the one they may develop. I wish we could have been introduced to characters in a more established sense, or at a better pace. Overall, I am excited to see where the next book goes and how the author plans on finishing the series.
This book was by far one of the most amazing books I've ever read! The writing style was great, the plot was solid, and the characters... The characters were phenomenal! The main character was such a strong, strong-willed, woman. I really like how the author didn't just jump on the train of "because she's strong, she doesn't have flaws". The side characters were also really well written. I thought I was going to hate Frankie, but she was one of my favourites in the book, other than the MC, of course. I just discovered this author and I'm definitely going to be reading more from her! (I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review)
This book gave me Batman meets True Blood vibes and I really enjoyed it. There was a solid mystery, with great twists, and the supernatural species were used brilliantly throughout.
But what really brings this book to life are the characters! Cassandra is strong and witty, but not without her vulnerable moments. I was glad that Alexander's presence was felt throughout the book, and he wasn't just a throwaway character. He brought a lot of emotion to the book. I have to say though, Frankie completely stole the show for me. I'd love to read an entire series just about her. Her twisted brain is fantastically interesting.
I enjoyed reading this book. It had a great character in Cassandra, we get to see her fight for the things she loves while looking for her families killer. This book has lots of twists and turns and lots of steamy scenes that includes quite a few f/f scenes so if your not into that then dont read and leave a bad review for it. It's not something I would normally read either but I stuck with it as the storyline was strong that it didn't get you focusing on the steamy moments all the time. So all in all I'm glad I stuck with it as I really enjoyed the actual story and the crazy ending leaving you hanging.
3.5 ⭐This was a hilarious, steamy, quick read. I like the story that's starting to unfold, the sex scenes are steamy, but there were a few points that I would've liked a better transition from the action taking place and the sex. With the book being on the small side sex was thrown in quite often, but absolutely enjoyed the read and glad I was given a copy to read. The ending leaves you hanging just enough to want to find out what happens next. 👍🏻 P.s who is this clown bastard!? I bet it someone from her past before she was adopted .. 🤔
Up In Smoke: A Reverse Harem Fantasy Novel (Burning Bounty Hunter Book 1) by Storm Song is an awesome story that I have read. This is book number one in this awesome start to a brand new series that I have loved reading and can not wait to read the rest of this awesome series. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about witch, vampire, werewolf, magic, reverse harem and paranormal romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Cassandra Creed literally slashes and burns her way through the bad guys of Mystic City, and she makes for an unapologetically brassy, badass, and hilarious protagonist—whether she’s slipping down dark alleys or between the sheets with an ex-lover. Storm Song really has a Voice going in Up in Smoke, and it pulls you through the action at high speed. If you’re looking for magical ass-kicking sprinkled with R-rated trysts, Up in Smoke is a promising start to a new series!
This was an interesting story. The main character is seeking revenge for her family’s death. She faked her death and is really closed off and independent. Throughout the book you see her struggle against being independent as more people join her cause. She learns more about herself and what happened. This book has so much sexual tension throughout. Warning there are F/F scenes. I want to read the next book.
I loved this reverse harem book and I'm already well into the next one. It's refreshing to see a ff pairing starting the harem. This is a super steamy book, I'd give it five chili peppers, which is lovely because that's what I like ;)
The heroine is likeable and snarky. She's like Anita Blake in the early books. Up In Smoke has a good mix of action, a despicable villain, great worldbuilding, investigation, romance and steam.
I absolutely love finding hidden gems like this story. It had such a unique twist to one of my favorite genres. The characters were great as well in that they felt real. The plot was intriguing and also had me guessing a bit like any good mystery. Finally, I love how it ended; the stakes are high and the consequences are dire! Can't wait to read what happens next!
I could not put this book down once I started it. It moves along at a really nice reading pace. The characters are so real that you feel as though you know them and you want to be there for them. The story will grab you and keep you turning pages until the very last page is read. This book needs to be on your TBR list, no doubt about it.
I loved it. I would have loved more of everyone's story, more details of their pasts. But I loved it. I cannot wait for the next book. The cliffhanger at the end left my jaw on the floor. I love Cass's sarcasm and weird sense of humor, it reminds me of myself lol. But she is way more badass and adventurous than me! Lol.
I loved it. It had everything I could want in a book. Drama, steamy sex, bisexual main character and the supernatural. At first I was hesitant to read this because I don't usually like reverse harem books (I like sex between everyone and most times they don't feel realistic or are so focused on sex that there is no plot) but this was AMAZING. I just wish it was longer.
Unclear, messy storyline where a psychotic sexual deviant with a qi lower than 80 stumbles randomly around (having sex here and there) completely lost despite being guided, and has weird hyperaggressive dialogues with random people. Somehow the bad guy is fixated with her and is also stupid, thus revealing his nefarious plan at the end for absolutely no reason
I'm giving this three stars because I only read a few chapters before realizing that this was going to have f/F interactions and I just personally don't read that type of book so I didn't want to leave a negative remark on a book that may be awesome to someone that read a this genre.
What a twist, so far it started out with a lot of mystery that was slowly unraveled. Needless to say it captured me completely and pretty much read this in 3 hours tops. Love it when its mixed paranormal romance, the only way this can be better would be different povs. Can't wait to read more. JL
OMG OMG OMG This book is just to good. I started it and did not end before I was finished and I really want more!!! The world building, the characters,... Everything was just really good written. I cannot wait until the next book is out!
Really enjoyed the main character and learning her backstory. Loved that the main character was bisexual. Can’t wait for the next book. Lots of steamy sex with both men and a woman. Great supporting characters as well. Definitely read this book.
OMMFG I'm in love with this book and am so glad this will be a series!! The MC is amazing and her RH is 😋. Thing's are going to get crazy in the next book, and I cannot wait for the next books so please hurry!!
This was a good intro to a new series. This book was steamy and I couldn't put it down. I also loved all the sarcasm and witty jokes that were woven into the story. Cassandra is hilarious! Gimmie book 2
Another amazing book from Storm Song. Beautiful plot and rich world. The characters are deep and addictive. Steamy, sexy, funny and intuitive in all the right places. Well worth the read.
