[Ajin] #15

AJIN: Demi-Human Vol. 15

Rate this book
Did the forces of government win the day and lay to rest the undying anarchist? The game plan, as ingenious as it was ad hoc, seemed workable, and to have worked. Unless... it failed to take into account a defining quality of the target, his very raison díEtre. It's not as if they've never noticed this in him before.

The final showdown rages on, delivering explosive action from start to finish.

I thought I had just one more volume left to complete the series, but I’ve realized I’m missing one. Time to fix that ASAP! 😅

Sato outguessed Kei, of course so the true final battle starts here. The Chekhov’s gun alluded to a few volumes earlier is actioned and all hell breaks loose.

There’s an embarrassing deus-ex-machina toward the end but I honestly don’t care. After 2 delaying volumes the action starts again and fast.

Art is great, storytelling is close to amazing and there is one breathtaking spread page to boot.

Despite of all the intricate plans devised by the protagonists, we keep getting back to square one, which is kind of frustrating, but it was still an interesting read.

Extrait :

File 68: Kei Nagai realises that Sato is bored of the attacks and that’s why he hasn’t emerged again from his severed arm in the hole. He relays this over the phone to Tanaka, Nakano, Izumi and Akiyama.

File 69: flashback to Kai in his childhood, how he helped everyone for no apparent reason, including standing up to bullies.

File 70: Sato turns back from his mission to return to the base but ejects before the fighter jet slams into the main building. This kills the anti-Demi-human forces underground (where the arm once was) and Kei’s group who are dotted in different places on the site. After the dust settles Sato walks to Kei who declares he has finished his mission.

File 71: Kei Nagai realises that Sato had shot himself in the head (as opposed to blowing himself up as dust in one of his missions that’ll return him at the site of his severed arm). That is why he didn’t emerge in the hole. Kai all of a sudden appears on a motorbike to attack Sato (but little impact). Sato then detonates himself in front of Kai and Kei and returns to where he left his new arm (in a nearby tree).

File 72: Kei dusts himself of and confronts Kai for coming (at risk). Sato shoots through Kei’s eye from behind to kill Kai.

File 73: In emerging again, Kei releases a storm of IBM’s (a spiralling tower of dozens of them) who all fall down onto the ground. In the chaos Kei tries to take Kai out from harm. One of them attacks Sato but his IBM is able to fend it off. Kei manages to evade the IBM’s who are now in their hundreds, down a tunnel about 20 feet below. Kai is not responding to CPR and bemoans how he is in this situation (Kai would help anyone, even if it makes the situation worse). Closing scene is Kei giving up on him and taking the steps up again. Sato is escaping by a helicopter manned by his IBM whilst the rogue IBM’s start roaming the grounds and beyond.

Sato got bored and came back? Now Kei's plan failed after so much effort to separate Sato's arm and put it into a narrow hole!

Kei's friend Kai came to save Kei. Kei hits Sato with tranquilizer so that Sato voluntarily blows himself up. Even though he did, there is a bigger arm of his that blew away than that of the arm they put inside a narrow hole. Hence Sato got regenerated from that big arm leading to failure of Kei's plan.

Sato comes back and kills Kai. Kai is a demi-human? His wounds healed and seems that Kai generated flood due to a intense and unique mental state's emotion. This flood power can be exchanged through exchanging mental states, by colliding two demi-humans through their heads.

Sato did this and now flood power flowed from Kai to Sato.

It feels like the manga is coming to a close (could be wrong), and I think it's an appropriate time story-wise. Sato always being one step ahead was starting to get a little one-note after 14 whole volumes of it, but further developments in the second half of this volume managed to keep up the excitement while giving readers hope that there may actually be a showdown that is final at some point soon. This review probably doesn't sound incredibly positive or 5-star worthy but I did really enjoy the read so you'll just have to trust me I guess! (Also I just tilt high in my ratings...)

I have been looking forward to this book for the last few months. Volume 14 ended on such a cliffhanger, and it seemed to take forever for the next volume to come out. I finally got it yesterday...and I was disappointed. Really disappointed. The cliffhanger of volume 14, and everything leading up to it, was so powerful, so edge-of-your-seat, and it was ruined by what I feel was a copout. I know there is another volume coming, but honestly, I'm not sure how they can build on this.

What I wrote in the volume 14's review was true. Sato seems to be very powerful, smart, and to difficult to defeated by Nagai and friends. Nagai always outplayed by this oldman. With 2 volumes left, I can't see this is gonna end well for Nagai & co, but I'm really looking forward for what will happen!

This ending is taking forever, and a lot of it just doesn't pay off.

However, when happens in this or the next book, that part returns the manga to greatness.

3.5 stars, rounded down.

I really enjoy this series and there’s never a dull moment this far in, but I do not think I have ever encountered a villain more overpowered than Sato. It’s actually insane. I guess that’s just what keeps this series going. I’ll continue reading, though.
