Colorado seems farther away than ever for Ben and his crew. Especially when a road block lures them deeper into the Appalachian Mountains.
Ambushed and captured, they fall prey to a gang of backwoods moonshiners turned post apocalyptic outlaws. After being led back to camp and locked up, the crew’s morale is at an all time low. Ben knows they must come together as a team if they are going to survive.
As the moonshiners’ intentions for them and their dogs comes to light, Ben and the others realize they must devise a way to escape no matter the risk. The alternative is unthinkable.
But sometimes even the best laid plans fall apart in the heat of battle, as Ben and the others soon find out while fighting for their freedom and their lives.
First, this book is woefully short, a scant few chapters. While there is a lot of good action here, some of the characters, particularly Ben reflect and ponder a lot. We don't really need any lenghty explanation of the story from previous books, because anyone who starts the series at book 8 kind of should be lost. This constant self-reflection tends to slow down the story and it might have been better, at least, if some of the characters actually talked and refreshed the story that way. I still like this series quite a lot but at the rate of such small installments, we will be at book # 25 by the time they reach the Mississippi River.
These are short simple books but I have to say this one was my favourite out of the series so far. Even though it’s extremely unrealistic, even if it’s just the fact that the dad was going on almost zero sleep.
You do realize you can die faster from a lack of sleep than from a lack of food or water. Everything that took place in this book would have been extremely difficult to execute properly. But having been up since 4am the last day to fight off bears and drive across country in scolding heat… only for them to be captured by these moonshine people.
How are we to believe the dad with very little help from anyone else was able to tackle this entire operation?
I’m glad they got out it could have been the end of them.. but yet again how did the world go to hell this fast? They keep saying it’s only been 2 weeks! 😳

Now captives of the bootleggers, Ben and the group quickly befriend fellow prisoners Rita and Carlos to gain insight into their captors. They devise a plan, with Ali luring a moonshine-drunk bootlegger to open the crate under the pretense of sharing a cigarette—allowing Joel to strike and Ben to finish the takedown. One by one, the group eliminates the remaining moonshiners, retrieves their gear, and frees Rita, Carlos, and another captive, Martin. When reinforcements from nearby compounds arrive, the group uses a case of dynamite to neutralize the threat. They escape the compound with four vehicles: the Blazer, Jeep, Martin’s Scout, and a fourth driven by Rita and Carlos.

Being responsible for the lives of others is a heavy burden.
Things to know upfront: This contains violence. It is book 8 in an ongoing mini-series. I highly recommend reading the previous books so that you get a better understanding of the characters and the "universe" they are in.
Ben, his family, and new friends are in deep trouble. Will they be able to find the right strategy to escape and get back on the road?
The author did a wonderful job of sharing the heavy burdens and overall concerns of the main characters.
Absolutely loved this! Ben was able to ensure his family and other prisoners were out. They killed all the moonshiners and were able to get all of their equipment back and then some. Ben proved to be a badass when the other moonshiners from other camps came and started firing. Joel is proving that even though he is a teenager, he’s smart and if nothing else, is love for Allie is proving to be a great motivator for him to continue maturing and protecting the family. Cannot wait to start the next book!

I am impressed that this story took me right back into the action of this series! Loved it and was sure glad when they started down that rough back road to get on their journey again! Can't wait for the next book!
Great continuation of the series. Ben and the rest of the gang continue to keep the reader turning pages. The story is so well written that it's a disappointment when you get to t he end.
Action packed evil vs. good thriller. A good steady read with lots of action as well as some nail biter moments. I really enjoy the entire series and look forward to the next installment. Hopefully with an additional 2-3 hundred more pages!
This series is a page turner. Once started you won’t be able to put it down! Truly the only problem is waiting in the next book to come out. Start from the beginning and enjoy the ride. 👍
Even though it is short, it an interesting story with characters who rise to the challenges before them. Survivalist, cast into an apocalyptic situation. Well written and well worth time invested in enjoying the tale.
The book keep you on the edge of your seat to see what was going to happen. They characters are easy to like. They make you feel like part of the group. It was enough to keep you engaged and wanting more. Can't wait for the next book to come out.
Miller is a new author to me and a happy surprise. The books in this series move along quickly without a dull moment. The characters are strong and involved the reader immediately. Buy the series you won't regret it. In
An underground tunnel to treasure? Mine carts carrying dogs and MREs… There is always something unexpected waiting around the corner on Ben and crew’s adventures. Moonshine will never be the same. I do wish there was more conversation between characters instead of mostly Ben’s thoughts.

A lot of filler dialogue and reminiscing of things that happened in previous books, sometimes multiple times in the same book. This one had a lot more adventure than the rest. Narrator is still good. Really deserves 3 1/2 stars.
Another great book by Bruno Miller. I love these characters. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend all of books by Bruno Miller.
Well Ben and the survivors are on their way. Waiting to see what happens next. The new people are a great addition and will continue to play a role in the next book.
I read the other books in this series. I stayed up late reading and did not want to put it down! Can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
