About the author

Jordi Puntí is a writer, translator (Paul Auster, Amélie Nothomb and Daniel Pennac, among others), and a regular contributor to the Spanish and Catalan press. He is currently the editor of the literary supplement, Quadern, published by the newspaper El País.

Puntí is considered one of the most promising new voices of contemporary Catalan literature. In 1998 he published his first book of short stories, Pell d’armadillo (Proa, 1998) that won the Serra d’Or Critics’ Prize.

Lost Luggage is his first novel.

"We live in the age of Messi and perhaps the best way to spend it is to watch every match."
Seems rather fitting. If anything is too good to be true, it's certainly watching Lionel Messi play. He chains us with awe, and what a privilege it is to be enchained with his game. Jordi Puntí has tried to touch the major threads which make the fabric of his play, and for fans like me, he has done his job. He might be accused of being a bit over-the-top with some of his claims, but is he really to be blamed when the player he's talking about can't be talked about in sober language. I'd rather be drunk on prose like this, however imperfect, than the dull and soiled language of numbers and statistics making a case for Messi's greatness.

Tipped off from another footballing essay, and did not disappoint. The easiest thing I'll read all year by a country mile, and thankfully it wasn't a biography per se, instead it's more like reading the words of someone who is overflowing with passion about FCB and Messi. When I sit down to tell my grandkids about those days, this is how I'll want to do it.

Written in 2019, thus pre PSG and World Cup win, the author's certainty about Messi staying at Barcelona was amusing as was the World Cup shortcomings. What a difference a few years makes, and I can only imagine the levels of adulation, which every chapter was already soaked with now that he's won, should the author write another book. And if the prodigal son returns this summer, well I don't think this guy will survive to tell the tale, but how beautiful would that be. A real life fairy tale, if he can resist the Saudi trillions.

This is the book equivalent of an Instagram fan page. It briefly covers Messi's earlier years, then discusses his career and highlights more thoroughly. It is very surface level; it doesn't have much information that isn't just available on the internet. The reader doesn't get a deeper insight into Messi's mind or get to know him on a more personal level as you would from reading an autobiography. Instead, you get 200 pages of why Messi is awesome--which is spectacular for Messi fans, which is why I recommend this book to them. But after reading this book I don't think of Messi in a fundamentally different light, rather I just know more about the Messi I have always known, which was slightly underwhelming.

Eigentlich ein gutes und interessantes Buch, das letzte Drittel ist allerdings eher eine Sammlung von Kolumnen über Messi. Hier wird nicht kritisch hinterfragt, sondern ein katalanischer Journalist und Messi-, sowie Barca-Fan schreibt begeistert über den Könner Leo Messi.
Lässt sich gut lesen, da der Schreibstil sehr blumig und toll ausgeschmückt ist, aber es ist mehr eine Sammlung von Texten über Messi.

My rating might be biased since FCB is my favourite club and Lionel Messi one of my favourite players. In this book all the events of Messi's life have been covered in a brief yet informative manner. A must read book for Football nerds and for anyone who wants to know more about the game.

Surgió, sobre todo, de la necesitad de contarlo, de revivir el prodigio de su fútbol a través de las palabras. Supongo que no está tan lejos del impulso que sentían los poetas griegos, en la antigüedad, a la hora de cantar las gestas de los atletas'', reconoce Jordi Puntí, uno de los nombres más relevantes de la actual escena literaria catalana, sobre la génesis de Todo Messi, su particular reconstrucción de la trayectoria del '10' del Barça. De hecho, Puntí recuerda perfectamente el partido que provocó sus ganas de escribir el libro. "Fue durante un Barça-Espanyol de Liga, en el Camp Nou, en diciembre de 2016. El Barça ganó 4-1 con un buen juego. El segundo gol vino tras una jugada virtuosa de Iniesta, que se la dio a Messi, y éste regateó a cuatro jugadores y chutó; el rechace, recogido por Suárez, fue gol, y en la retransmisión de RAC1, Joan Maria Pou dijo que la jugada de Messi era 'erótico-festiva". En ese momento yo me dije: "Todo esto hay que contarlo, pero bien". Sobre Messi se ha escrito mucho, y en muchas ocasiones muy bien. La biografía de Guillem Balagué, por ejemplo, es completísima y hay algunos trabajos periodísticos excelentes. Diferenciándose de todos ellos, en Todo Messi, el autor ofrece la visión del aficionado (que es como él mismo se define), proponiendo una aproximación sentimental, analítica y juguetona al universo de Leo, además de buscar siempre el registro literario, con múltiples referencias. "Si uno lo piensa bien, tampoco se han publicado tantos libros sobre Messi. Su dimensión de mejor jugador de la historia podría darnos mucho más", destaca el autor. "En mi caso, creo haber leído casi todo lo que ha aparecido sobre él, y me ha sido útil en especial para fijar detalles biográficos que desconocía. Sin embargo, al tratarse mi libro de un acercamiento más personal y literario, muchos aspectos nacen de la imaginación y de la propia experiencia como seguidor". Reza el tópico que se han acabado los términos para calificar al argentino, algo en lo que no está del todo de acuerdo Puntí, quien, precisamente, dedica uno de los capítulos del libro a los adjetivos. "No creo que hayamos agotado el diccionario. En realidad, me parece todo lo contrario", incide. "Una buena forma de describirle es que Messi no agota el lenguaje, lo crea: nos obliga a hablar y escribir mejor si queremos contar todas sus proezas. De la misma forma que es un creador de fútbol, de la misma manera que Mozart o Picasso lo fueron en sus artes, con su juego Messi nos invita a narrar mejor".

This is a book written by a fan. It informs you of nothing and is so bias in its view. I personally think Messi is the greatest footballer of all time and there is lots of basis for this, however the author just skims over others like Ronaldo and discounts them as grossly inferior to his favourite subject. I gave up reading the book when the author recants how he phoned up the house of Maradona to speak to him. That really is taking an infatuation too far.

نظر: قلم پونتی و ترجمه آقای صفری عالیه. اگه مثل من عاشق لیونل مسی هستید از دستش ندید. اگه فوتبال نمی‌بینید و سوالتون اینه که چرا مسی پرستیدنی عه، هم اینو بخونید. اگه هم طرفدار بازیکنان دیگه ای هستید اینو بخونید. بهترین کتابی که خوندم

قد يفضّل عشاق الكرة ومحبي اللاعب ليو ميسي تحديداً مشاهدة تسديداته القوية في مرمى الخصم، وأهدافه المدروسة وتمريراته السريعة الرشيقة، أكثر من قراءة كتبٍ عنه، لكنّهم سيغيّرون رأيهم منذ الصفحة الأولى؛ ذلك أنّ الكتاب ينفرد بمعلوماتٍ لم تُنشر قبلاً عن هذا الرجل ولم يقلها معلقٌ رياضيٌّ يتولّى وصف مباراة، أو مُنظّرٌ في استديو تحليلي يبرّر ويسوّغ أحداث مباراةٍ لعب فيها ميسي..

ولا أذكر -وهنا لا أدّعي أنّني متابعٌ مرٌّ لكرة القدم- انشقاقاً هائلاً حصل بين عشاق الكرة بقدر ما حصل بين محبي ليو ميسي الذين يعدّونه أسطورةً كرويةً تاريخية، وبين ك��رهيه الذين يرون فيه صناعةً إعلامية، وأنّ مهاراته لا تتعدّى نظرائه من الفريق ذاته.
لكن من المؤكد أنّه ومنذ أن ظهر ليو ميسي لأول مرة مع فريق برشلونة منذ عشرين عاماً مضت، وتحديداً في مباراةٍ ودّية جمعت برشلونة ضد فريق بورتو يوم الأحد 16 نوفمبر 2003، منذ ذلك اليوم ومعظم محبي نادي بورتو يتمنون لو أنّ هذا اللاعب سجّل هدفاً في مرماهم، لأنّ ذلك سيكون الهدف التاريخي الأول لميسي في تاريخه الكروي العريض؛ وشرفاً لهم أن يكون ذلك في مرمى فريقهم!!

في هذا الكتاب “ميسي..تمارين على الأسلوب” يقدّم الصحافي الرياضي جوردي بونتي والذي يكتب أعمدةً دورية في أعرق الصحف الرياضية، أكثر من عشرين مقالاً تدور كلها حول اللاعب الأسطورة ليو ميسي. وهي معلومات (مؤكدة) حصل عليها الكاتب من خلال تتبع مسيرة الحركة الرياضية العالمية وتحديداً كرة القدم الإسبانية، واختلاطاً باللاعب ذاته وبأقرب الناس إليه، منهم “هوراشيو جاجيولي” المفوّض بالتوقيع عن ميسي لأنّ هذا الأخير كان في زمن انتسابه لصفوف نادي برشلونة بعمر ثلاثة عشر عاماً تقريباً، وهو عمر لايسمح له بأن يكون وكيل نفسه!.

بعض التفاصيل الواردة في الكتاب أو أكثرها مشوّقٌ جداً، على سبيل المثال: كيف كُتب عقد ليو ميسي مع فريق برشلونة في نادٍ للتنس، وكيف كان ذلك على منديل ورقي رخيص، وكيف يفاوض ميسي الآن على ثمن عرض هذا العقد الأول!!

مقالاتٌ أخرى عن أسلوب مشيه في الملعب وسرعته في الركض مع الكرة أكثر مما لو كان منفرداً، وظاهرة الوشوم التي تملأ جلده وهل هي رسائل مشفرة؟! وعلاقته مع لدّه الخصم كريستيانو رونالدو، وقصصٌ أخرى حول كيف تبنّى نادي برشلونة علاجه من خلل نموّه، وكيف ينظر الشعب الأرجنتيني العاشق للكرة إلى كلٍّ من مارادونا وميسي وهل لايزال ولاءهم للأول؟!.

وسيحظى القارئ المهتم بالمسيرة الرياضية للبرغوث (البرغوث هو لقب ميسي في ناديه الأرجنتيني الأول) بتفاصيل أخرى حول إصابات اللاعب وضربات الجزاء التي أدّاها بحرفية، أو تلك التي أهدرها، ومعالم الموضة التي استنّها ميسي في الأوساط الرياضية!.

صدر الكتاب عن دار أطلس عام 2022، ويقع في 157 صفحة من القطع المتوسط، وبترجمة سلسة من المترجم محمد بيطاري الذي نقل الكتاب عن اللغة الكاتلانيّة، وللإنصاف؛ هذه المرة الأولى التي أعرف أنّ لدينا في سورية من يترجم عن هذه اللغة وبهذه الحرفيّة. وبالمجمل هو كتاب جميل، شيّق عن لاعبٍ مميز أدنى ما يمكن أن يُقال عنه هو ما ذكره مرةً اللاعب الأرجنتيني العريق خورخي فالدانو: “أفضل لاعب في العالم هو ميسّي، وثاني أفضل لاعب في العالم هو ميسّي مُصاباً”.
