"Quick Chick" by Julia Hoban is a great story. It was about a Hen who had four little chicks. He started off with three chicks then the other chick came out of its egg. The hen would teach all of his chicks how to do things such as scratch for corn, dig for worms, peck for seeds and etc. The newest chick would be so slow at doing all those things so everyone would call it the "slow chick". The Slow Chick became the "Quick Chick" when one day a cat started chasing him and he ran so fast and that was how he got his new name.
I think children up to second grade would really enjoy this book. Reading this to a little kid would be so enjoyable for them. The book has a lot of humor. I loved how the author kept repeating all the chicks name because hearing Cute Chick, Sweet Chick, Good Chick, Nice Chick, Slow Chick and Quick Chick constantly throughout the story creates humor for kids. It also grabs their interest in the story.
I loved how the illustrator really connected with the author. The illustrations went great with the text. The animals had great detail. In some stories where the characters are animals, sometimes you can't really tell how the animals are feeling by looking at their face of the illustrations, but in this story, the illustrator did great expression the animals. I can see exactly how each animal was feeling whether they were happy, excited or just normal. The author made the animals look like people, especially the pig because on a few pages the pig was standing on two feet as if it was a human being.
