A new evil lurks in the darkness
After an explosion, the crew of a battlecruiser mysteriously disappears.
Corruption
After an explosion, the crew of a battlecruiser mysteriously disappears.
Bailey and Lewis, complete strangers, find themselves suddenly onboard the damaged ship. Lewis hasn’t worked a case in years, not since the final one broke his spirit and his bank account. The last thing Bailey remembers is preparing to take down a fugitive on Onyx Station.
Mysteries are harder to solve when there’s no evidence left behind.
Bailey and Lewis don’t know how they got onboard Ricky Bobby or why. However, they quickly learn that whatever was responsible for the explosion and disappearance of the crew is still on the ship.
Monsters are real and what this one can do changes everything.
The new team bands together to discover what happened and how to fight the monster lurking in the bottom of the battlecruiser.
The stakes have never been higher
No matter the cost, no matter the sacrifice, one thing is certain.
The Federation cannot be allowed to fall.
Note: If cursing is a problem, then this might not be for you.

Sarah Noffke and Michael Anderle have created a brilliant series around human Eddie Teach and enhanced human Julianna Fregin. I love how these characters ague but still mesh together. They build a team, ghost squadron and go into battle against planets and raves who think to annihilate others just to take their resources and even their planet. As usual, there is loads of bumps in the road, heaps of action and best of all justice. Can’t wait to read more from these two authors, so bring on more....
Anyone who can't tap dance is a [bleep]. That was a favorite phrase at the fighter pilots' bar in Koonsan. Someone would shout it out, and anyone who didn't immediately start imitating a tap dance usually ended up buying. I'm reminded of that story because we had all sorts of references to tap dancing in these books. For muscle cars I can't believe the 64 GTO wasn't mentioned. 80 mph in a lonely stretch of Alabama highway, and kick in the third carb was like lighting the burners. The first books were decent with little philosophical discussions such as everyone has a bit of bad that they have to hold on to. That discussion was much too brief. We have this macho man with a tortured past that likes to draw bad guys into bar fights so he can have fun wiping the floor with them. Well superman General decides to recruit him because he's putting together a black ops unit to save the universe. That's one amusing inconsistency. Female gushes at a waterfall that it was the most beautiful thing in the world. Really? Which one? Anyway, hero general matches bar fighter to ninja girl, and they have to go different places to capture, defuse, or kill various bad guys while picking up recruits along the way. They've got a stealth ship that tends to fly like a two seater fighter while being big enough to carry a squad (maybe a platoon) along on their missions. They find they need personal stealth but have to go mine the necessary crystals themselves, and in the process kill the last remaining denizen of the planet. Now that's saving the universe in a big way. So we go weird with a stealthy snake people who shape shift, but you can see their original form if you get some snake blood to charge your goggles. It also appears that as they shape shift, they change weight also. Isaac Asimov would really love that the same way he liked it in Fantastic Voyage where he covered his face, and took the money as technical advisor. Anyway we've been working up to the great adventure with the tangle thief which was invented by one of the in collaboration with a scientist who lost his mind, but has become part of the team. By the way, we picked up his son along the way, and he's a great mechanic that's having trouble building the flux capacitor in a DeLorean. I also didn't mention the three AI's that love to invade privacy, not that there's much to keep private. Sometimes the books start to wax philosophical, but they get off that pretty quickly to go silly with macho boy and ninja girl. As I said, it's an inconsistent read.
My inclination was to give this a poor rating, but ... I did read the whole thing, so it had an ability to hold my interest combined with a rapid pace.
But...
First, I object to people writing science fiction when they appear to have no understanding of science. But that is happening so often it is the rare author who passes this test, so let's move on.
To some extent this was military, space-opera science fiction, but it fails badly in that regard. They are given the most sophisticated battleship, and basically use it as a taxi. Its entire crew is relegated to figures in the background, not utilized. Space battles are fought with descriptions more like dodge ball in high school; compare to the Longknife series where space and time and speeds and strategy play a role.
But let's just talk strategy - the two heros seem to have no concepts of strategy or planning. Discover that alien spaceships can mimic their own fighters, they find a quick solution -- then the next battle go in unprepared all over again. Or the hero has no better sense than to see a big hole on an animal storage ark with glowing eyes, than to stick his hand inside instead of continuing his mission to save the galaxy.
Some say that "willing suspension of disbelief" is a necessity. I never achieved that. Yet I made it to the end because it was, despite all these flaws, a decently enjoyable read. Kind of like reading fantasy or magic stories; you know some silly magic spell (in this case coming from an octopus each time) will save the day, so ignore that part of the plot and think about the rest.
Entertaining, overall but... has some flaws for me.
It seems from the authors notes that great store is placed in the characters but I found the characterisation of the two lead figures, Julia and Eddie, really clichéd, simplistic and leaden. Hatch and Lars, on the other hand, were far more interesting.
In terms of story lines these were reasonably inventive, with lots going on, but again even with the scripted order of things (break in with a plan, encounter an unexpected problem, have the characters resolve it whilst also bonding deeply), the inevitability of everything turning out perfectly in the end every single time made things a bit boring.
Likewise, the repetitive plot device of new members coming onboard as potential enemies but morphing with very little effort into new heroes, it was very repetitive.
You might be asking why did I bother to carry on reading, given that my review sounds a bit negative, and my response is that whilst the characters were a rather too obvious and the storylines too, what that resulted in was very easy reading, the kind of pulp fiction that is a very welcome distraction when one's real world feels a little much. Unlike some series, where the characters and stories stay with you, most of these won't. But I did enjoy the series regardless.
First off i am a big Michael anderle fan and have read a significant number of his books previously This time round. 7 books in one hit is too many, the characters are excellent and they develop brilliantly over the series, the stories can be broken down into 2 main ones with little side adventures thrown in along the way. First of some human feels he has been wronged and decides to take his anger out on the general, step in Ghost squadron to thwart the bad guy. Second story is all about a long lost alien race, that lost their planet, want it back and the technology to! do it will destroy the universe. Step in GS to save the day And therein lies the problem, it is just a tad too predictable. 7 books of great dialog, fun encounters and lots of adventure, spoilt by just a little too much "happy ever after"
Although we have barely had much time with Julianna Fregin and Ricky Bobby, Jules is a strong center character for a series. Add in a goofy Captan/partner, a puffing Octopus genius mechanic, AI's and EI's, and a monumental battle cruiser and you have mayhem. Otter assassins, every drink known to man, including one even BA would choke on, muscle cars, Q ships, The General, and psychic sand, incredible mayhem. We've even got a yoga Bohemian Master Engineer. Mayhem. This series is tons of fun, makes you think, and has the potential to end the entire universe. Grab it for more Kurtherian enjoyment.
What do I like? Let me count the ways: The characters are unique, weirdly fascinating, and we'll developed. The humor is an important thing I love. Just a little weird. I also enjoyed references to old movies and products. It was like finding small prizes in cracker jacks. I am sure I missed some of them. An octopus alien mechanic with a collection of vintage vehicles? An AI with growing pains? A space ship/AI named Ricky Bobby?
This series leaves me a bit confused. First and foremost, it’s a corking good story. There are a lot of contradictions in the books, though. With two authors one would think that they would be devoid of Tom Swifties, but instead there or dozens of them. The same with mcguffins. The books are mostly written at a YA level, but the language is such that I would hesitate to give a copy to my twelve year old. I enjoyed the series, and will read more of their stuff, but please decide who your audience is.
This is a really great series. A space opera that makes you wish you could be there. A hero and heroine can cheer for, even when they sometimes; very rarely ( ha, ha ), make a mistake. They are a black-ops group. They are off the books, so if they get in trouble they're on their own. But they have resources that are fantastic! They take on the villains no one else can. Plenty of action, adventure and a little lite romance thrown in for interest. If you luv this type of story don't miss this one! Highly recommended for all ages!
Ok for book 4...I have to tell ya how surprised I was when I read the name Klamath in it. See I'm from Klamath Falls, OR. USA. That you made it an Ice Planet is too freaking close to what the world is like in winter around here! We're up in the Cascade Mountains so it gets pretty cold here. Klamath is the name of the local Native American tribe.
Anyway I love the series and glad that there might be more in store for Ghost Squadron. Eddie and Juiles have a lot going for them!
I'd really like this series if it wasn't written so tongue in cheek. Seriously, Doc EE Smith would have been proud of the action packed into it. BUT, the deliberate inaccuracies just sometimes threw me. I guess I'm too old at 70 to appreciate a book series that maybe was aimed at a 20 year old. Still, please remember that I finished all seven of the books so apart from that, a thumbs up. A VERY big battlecruiser is a battleship!
A great character development on the outskirts of the main series as the off the books team do the jobs that can't be officially recognised. With some interesting personalities and situations this is a great read especiay a few books in as we become familiar with turning the bad into the good and useful. New to Noffkes work but this was good as i feel Anderle picks his co-authors very well and shall try out more from this collaboration.
I could not put this down, I did a binge read of this series. This is Space military action at the best, the plot is fantastic, the characters are wonderful and very well developed, the writing is top-notch. Lots of action, I really like the interplay between the characters, and seeing the relationships developed. The use of AIs is a wonderful touch and adds to the storyline, and Pip provides comic relief. You will be rooting for the Ghost Squadron Team.
A new group is out together to help bring order to the universe. I have read these box sets out of order but am glad I read this one after Carpathian Gambit. I am still looking for more books in this universe they are fun and exciting. Thanks for an adventure I can enjoy without leaving the Earth.
Outstanding characters with a huge amount of heart. Story screams along just begging for you to be dragged all for the ride. Loved the story with all of the classic Earth references, even though I do like Dr. Pepper! Looking forward to reading more from these authors in the future. Glad I could get this series in my collection and library. Awesome work!
The first thing I really like was all characters were kept together in each book. Second the books kept the arc going while introducing random curves. All plot were converged in a very interesting way. Keep up the good work. I will definitely be buying more of these authors.
A really fantastic set of books, but you should not say have a Happy Ending too often, without knowing it does have another meaning. I cannot get enough of this story I keep wanting that it never ends, and them it doesn't. Thanks to all the writers you give ME a reason to wake up just to read. And to forget watching TV. Again Thank You All.
I am usually content to read one book in a series at a time. Then, I move on to something else, returning to the series at a later date. This series, however, was different. I could not read just one. I read it in its entirety. I love a good space opera. Try it. You'll like it.
Really fun and interesting stories Ghost squadron grew from two to many. Including the great big snakes! Really enjoyed the AIs The philosophy and what life is about For me it is always the journey
The plot seemed to ramble but it finally got to a good conclusion. Some of the aspects were too unbelievable and the action scenes were over the top in credibility. Overall it was a good read.
Way before I was ready, the story reached a... Dare I say ending? There are always more fights but then what? I enjoyed the entire series. Now I want more.
The title says it all. Please don’t let these characters end here. I have tried to not to whine, but please oh please let there be more books with these characters. You cannot break up the band now
Really enjoyed this space adventure box set. The adventures and battles were amazing but what I really enjoyed most were the interactions between the characters, human, alien and AI!!
I highly recommend this endearingly thrilling book, and the imaginative series associated with it, to readers who love reading fascinating Sci-Fi Fantasy. These characters will draw you into their narrative, and wow you every time. Enjoy!
The author is great. The characters are well developed and likeable. The story line is entertaining. And then out of nowhere comes a thought or a phrase that is thought provoking and philosophical. Good job Ms Sarah for giving me a series worth reading
A fun read. Great character development. More humorous than most books in the KGU spectrum. Hoping that it continues as a great deal of room within the plot to wrap up serious business.
