review: While this book is for people dealing with high-functioning anxiety, I think it also has application for people struggling with emotional strain due to the pandemic. If anything, I would have preferred to read a book about low-functioning anxiety. I wanted tips on how to deal with disproportionate emotional responses to minor issues and events, amongst other things. This book is largely about dealing with fear, anxiety, and panic attacks, rather than working through other emotions such as anger and sadness.

The first section, “Living & Working,” was the most helpful for me, with “Socialising” coming in a close second. The sections on “Relationships” and “Parenting” were less relevant, seeing as I don’t have a partner or children. The book’s formatting and design is beautiful, though. The book is the the equivalent of hitting a “panic button.” Each section is a decision tree, so each time you feel yourself begin to panic, you can pick up the book and work your way through the prompts in order to calm back down. It’s a brilliant concept. I don’t know how effective the prompts are, so I might have to revisit this review at a later date after trying some of them out. The book’s interior is also designed with gorgeous, soothing watercolours.

the verdict: An excellent book for working through panic attacks, but I’m still looking for a good book on managing emotional overwhelm.

I really like how this book is broke down into categories so it's easier to find a place to start. I read it from beginning to end and took it all in. I appreciate the idea and love the aesthetic of the book, but I didn't find myself relating to most of the situations. For my personal experience with anxiety I don't think this would be the best tool.

This book is for those with High Functioning Anxiety.

After reading this books’ questions, I realized that I used to have High Functioning Anxiety. What I have now is massively worse. Is that considered Low Functioning anxiety? IDK.

Today I found myself having Anxiety & Panic. I reached for this book for the first time. I thought the book premise was an amazing idea. I read through all the questions but they didn’t pertain to what I was going through. My anxiety issues lie in needing to feel safety, dealing with feeling extremely overwhelmed at the smallest things, comfort and trust, etc.

I felt like the questions I needed to read in the book were more deep, more expansive, more deep seated & more complicated.

My point is NOT to discount this book. If you are High Functioning, this may be perfect for you. My point is to say to any of those people who aren’t High Functioning, this may not be what you need.

But then again, maybe, like me, it will take this book to realize you aren’t High Functioning. Which for me, is progress forward in getting to a solution to my issues.

The layout of this book is great. Simple enough for someone in grip stress to be able to focus on. It didn't really provide me with anything useful, but I can see how it would be helpful to people who suffer from severe anxiety.

I had this book recommended to me by a coworker and it was a good read. There are coping strategies, and definitely plays into the theory of “to overcome anxiety you have to understand your anxiety”. Definitely a good book to add to your toolkit if you’re browsing for self help !

Perhaps this would be helpful for a general type of high-functioning anxiety, but I found only a few sections that resonated with me, and even then, fewer were beneficial. Objectively, this would be a great support for someone. It did not, however, work for me as much as I'd hoped.
