Rise and Shine #2

Slip and Slide

Rate this book
A gay romantic comedy novella about wading through the noise to discover what you really want.

Caught in the crossfire of his chaotic flatmates’ one-sided romance, and a landlady on a rampage, Gabriel is just trying to get to work on time and avoid burning dinner.

Throw in a plumbing emergency, overstaying cats, a public and painful proclamation of love, and a trip to the hospital – even the laid-back Gabriel is frazzling.

Then there’s Arthur. Sweet, adorable, and eager to please – all qualities that had so charmed Gabriel. Though, that’s also how you might describe a puppy. And puppies are a lot of work.

Gabriel has his man – now he must decide if Arthur is worth it…

Slip and Slide is the sequel to Duck and Dive, but this time Gabriel’s calling the shots.

Slip ans Slide is a continuation of Arthur and Gabriel's romance from Duck and Dive this time told from Gabriel's POV.

First two chapters serve as a brief introduction to Gabriel's character and his living conditions (two younger annoying flatmates, two cats and one annoying landlady) and offers us Gabriel's impression of his and Arthur's first encounter. After which the story continues, right where it left off in the first novella, with Gabriel and Arthur's morning after and Gabriel's realization that Arthur's "starter-gay" status might make him reluctant to pursue anything further with Arthur. Luckily Gabriel's inability to stop thinking of Arthur renders his dilemma a complete non issue instead the plot giving free rain to annoying roommates, misbehaving cats and overbearing landlady.

Once again all the events happen in a span of one week, unfortunately Gabriel and Arthur's romance feels a little more than an after thought to all the other hijinks and secondary characters trying to steal the limelight.

The third and last installment looks like it offers more of the same, only with probably even bigger cast of extremely annoying secondary characters to endure and I am not sure if I have any remaining mental energy for that.

Themes: single POV, coming out, fledgling relationship

Hilarious follow up to Duck and Dive.

In Slip and Slide we see the continuation of Arthur and Gabrielle's story from Gabrielle's point of view, and it's equally funny and well-written. There's another set of flatmates, a new landlady, and a few appearances from Duck and Dive's characters.

Ralph's nailed the inner monologues and conversations everyone has when they're head over heels in love, and the characters and interactions are spot on.

Highly recommended!

DNF @ 58%.

I just re-read the first book to refresh before reading this, but I honestly shouldn't have bothered since the first chapter pretty much rehashes the main bits from the first book, only from Gabriel's POV.

Unfortunately, the events of the first book aren't the only things that get repeated... events from this book do as well. Ex. I've been told twice that Sheela is a 50-something year old who works at the driving range with Gabriel and is the closest thing he has to a friend. It's a pretty short book, so I would think that a) we don't need the reminder and b) if it wasn't intended as a reminder than it's short enough it should have been caught in editing.

But the main issue is that while I found Arthur charming and awkward in his narrative in the first book, now that I'm reading from Gabriel's POV, I actually do not like Gabriel at all, he just rubs me the wrong way.

REVIEW ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Slip and Slide by G B Ralph is the second installment in the Rise and Shine series. This novella finds Gabriel struggling to get his blossoming romance with Arthur off the ground but seems to be constantly thwarted by high maintenance flatmates, a pushy landlady, a plumbing emergency and overstaying cats. Relationships are hard work, but from everything Gabriel can see, Arthur is worth it. ⠀

Another quick and light read, but this one falls a bit flat in comparison to the first. There was too much emphasis placed on Gabriel’s interaction with his flatmates and not enough between the two central characters. Some of the chemistry and spark seemed to be lost. Hopefully the third and final book in the series can recapture that electric rom-com vibe. ⠀

The Cuteness Continues

Gabriel and Arthur are so cute and having Gabriel as narrator this time is a nice touch. His very different perspective, especially on going out with a newly out other guy, is well delivered and as sitcommy as this often is, it doesn’t really verge into stereotypes. It’s a warm, funny read and I really hope for more!

What a chaotic book! In all the best ways!
I’m looking forward to reading the next short story followed up by Over and Out.
If I compare my relationship to the characters in this series of books, I would definitely be the Arthur!
Am I supposed to see myself in romcom books? Meh, who cares! The writing really pulled me in and got me engaged in the story ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3/3.5* enjoyable continuation of Arthur and Gabriel’s story, from Gabriel’s perspective.
This time it is his friends that provide the sidekick humour.
Eventually these two do work out that their feelings are mutual and worth pursuing.

This is what I wanted, cozy, romantic, with over thinking thrown in. Am loving this journey with Arthur and Gabriel, but I think I am just filling time until the next Milverton Mystery.

Fun follow up of Duck & Dive!

‘Slip & Slide’, the novella by G B Ralph is a sequel to his debut book ‘Duck & Dive’, a cute romantic comedy.

‘Duck & Dive’ was told from the perspective of the closeted Arthur, who tries to come out to his friends, but keeps fumbling from revealing the truth. ‘Slip & Slide’ is narrated by Gabriel, a struggling student who develops a crush on Arthur, but is wondering if dating someone new to the pride parade is worth the effort.
