Based on the smash-hit audio serial, Bubble is a hilarious high-energy graphic novel with a satirical take on the “gig economy.”

Built and maintained by corporate benevolence, the city of Fairhaven is a literal bubble of safety and order (and amazing coffee) in the midst of the Brush, a harsh alien wilderness ruled by monstrous Imps and rogue bands of humans. Humans like Morgan, who’s Brush-born and Bubble-raised and fully capable of fending off an Imp attack during her morning jog. She’s got a great routine going—she has a chill day job, she recreationally kills the occasional Imp, then she takes that Imp home for her roommate and BFF, Annie, to transform into drugs as a side hustle. But cracks appear in her tidy life when one of those Imps nearly murders a delivery guy in her apartment, accidentally transforming him into a Brush-powered mutant in the process. And when Morgan’s company launches Huntr, a gig economy app for Imp extermination, she finds herself press-ganged into kicking her stabby side job up to the next level as she battles a parade of monsters and monstrously Brush-turned citizens, from a living hipster beard to a book club hive mind.

Hello! I'm a writer of television, features, podcast and COMICS! I'm the creator and co-writer of the 2x Eisner nominated graphic novel "Bubble." My next graphic novel with artist Bowen McCurdy is out 7/16/24! It's a YA horror-comedy about teenage exorcists and I'm SO EXCITED for folks to see it. Please give it a "want to read" on here and a pre-order wherever you get your books!

You might also know me as the actor behind many unpleasant characters on "Good Mythical Morning" or the co-host of the not-super-popular but long-running podcast "Jordan Jesse Go!"

A rollicking start with fun characters gives way to a thin and silly quest for magical stones that devolves into much punching and many explosions for a resolution. Coming up with fun characters usually doesn't excuse the need for a plot and some world building that makes sense. For instance, how is 311 making new music and the father remembers seeing the Grateful Dead in what we are told on page 30 is sometime after the year 2180?

After reading this, Flash Forward: An Illustrated Guide to Possible (And Not So Possible) Tomorrows, and a couple of The Adventure Zone graphic novels, I'm starting to think it would be a good rule to avoid graphic novels adapting or inspired by podcasts. I don't listen to them and apparently I shouldn't read them either.

This graphic novel satirizes the gig economy, gated communities, and hipster lifestyle. However, I felt that the satire was a bit toothless as the story focuses more on raunchy gags rather than the issues it is supposedly focused on.

I loved everything about this graphic novel (adapted from a humor podcast). The art is bright and dynamic, the humor is silly and cynical and satirical, the writing is Buffy meets Sorkin meets Portlandia, the gig economy is soul sucking, the characters are more than just their archetypes, and the big corporate commodifying overlords are real. A great scifi satire that pushes all he right buttons for me.

Morgan, Annie, Mitch, and Van live in a bubble, a manufactured dome that protects them from the alien lifeforms outside of the city.

Occasionally, the critters outside get in and that leads to Morgan fighting back to save the people around her. She's very good at it because she grew up outside the bubble, learning to kill aliens with a bow and arrow.

But when one of the corporations running the bubble develops an app called Huntr to hire people to kill the imps and various creatures that plague the bubble residents, Morgan discovers she hasn't left her past behind as much as she thought.

Things accelerate from there.

I enjoyed Bubble very much for its story and characters. I realize it is a satire on various things from the gig economy to millennials to survivalists, but it also stands on its own legs as a fun fantasy.

The story leaves a small opening for a second entry in the series, but closes the first book in a satisfying way. Not all comics bother to do so, and I appreciated it.

Because of some of the content (language and drug use), I'd recommend this book to older teens or adults only.

It is clever and a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

I came into this graphic novel blind - I hadn't listened to the podcast, and I didn't do much sleuthing on what the story was about. MAN OH MAN - was I in for a pleasant surprise! Not only were the illustrations vivid and colorful, but also the story and characters were captivating, and the humor ON POINT. I was cackling through a lot of it - from the book club moms, to the references made to about the gig economy and my millennial generation... I will most definitely be checking out this podcast. Thanks for granting me a copy of this ARC! Highly recommend.

This is based on an audio serial (so a podcast?) and started off okay but kind of became lame. It's a group of four friends who live in a community (bubble) and fight and kill imps which are these weird mutant alien things. It's really dumb the more I think about it.

A enticing sounding graphic novel that starts off fairly strong before falling apart and devolving into a messy mass of repetitive jokes, forgettable characters, and is one "The Office" joke short of being a fictionalized Buzzfeed article.

This was so frustrating to read because there really is a lot of potential here: the story follows a pushed-together gang of pals battling alien monsters à la a gig app, all while a bigger mystery looms in the background. But none of the characters a) take themselves seriously long enough to hold a real conversation, or b) have more than one personality trait. Think the Mystery Gang from Scooby Doo only with none of the charm and they're all just making a bunch of penis jokes or super dated Seinfeld references. Like, maybe it's funny the first couple times? But almost 250 pages of jokes about hipsters and if pineapple belongs on pizza REALLY grates on the nerves.

Also, the plot doesn't know what it is. Is this a found family story? A tale about the millennial human condition? A daughter reconnecting with her dad? A sci-fi mystery with a nefarious big bad? The plot tries to be all of these things and then just fails pretty much totally at delivering a satisfying ending for any of them. Then it gives the reader an embarrassingly uninspired cliffhanger that doesn't even make sense with the rest of the book.

The art style is solid, and the She-Hulk-ish serum moment near the end slaps. Other than that, it was a big letdown for me personally. Sorry if this bursts your "Bubble" but I don't recommend this one.

I have to say, this was just a totally freaking BRILLIANT graphic novel. If you like weird ass sci-fi adventures/ semi-quests with alien monsters with a totally laugh-out-loud-so-often-people-around-you-totally-think-you-MIGHT-be-nuts sense of millennial-centered (as in, makes fun of, in the best way 😂😂😂) humor that takes center stage, and UH-MAZ-ING art... PLEASE do yourself a favor & pick this the f*ck UP!

This comic is "based on the smash-hit audio serial." Do they mean podcast?

Yeesh, sometimes I feel every one of my years, and that was the case with this comic. It starts out well with an interesting premise, and then proceeds to devolve into ridiculous nonsense - yes I am aware, but there are non-ridiculous types of nonsense surely? I liked the illustrations, and the fun nods to popular culture, but overall, I didn't really care what happened to these bubbly folks.

My soul mate purchased this for me knowing I would love it! I didn't listen to the podcast beforehand but after reading this I think I am going to. I took a two week break reading this because I got wrapped up in other books. I am glad I got back into it tonight.

When Mitch said he found porn sexier when the actors seem like they were in love, I felt that. Bubble actually made me laugh and I enjoyed a male character. Mitch was so cool and weird. I loved him. The action was good, the plot was easy to follow, and the characters actually had flaws.

I really hope there is a second part to this!

I have not listened to the podcast at all, so I came at this blind. I thought the premise sounded interesting, but unfortunately it carries little of the plot.

I think the main problem the book had was maintaining a sense of suspense when the characters simply will not shut up or take anything seriously. I'm sure that's coming from the podcast and normal conversational banter, but it makes it hard to care about what happens to any of them. It seems to take the stance that modern society in general sucks and blah blah back to simple roots of survival and fighting and etc outside the bubble, which is stupid. If it had stuck to condemnation of corporate-run capitalist society, sure - but that actually makes up SUCH a small part of the story it leans into some pretty bullshit sentiments about humanity in general.

It felt like it was trying too hard with humor to be adult and edgy and hipstery. Idk just not my vibe at all.

Also making basically the whole main cast white is like. pretty noticeable!

I started to write up a summary of the plot but truth be told I forgot the main character's name already and then I realized I didn't care. There's a summary up top. Use that. The sci-fi setting unfortunately is not heavily explored or used beyond a little monster design and some deus ex machina equipment.

3.5/5

To be honest, I wasn't the biggest fan of the storyline - I felt like the plot was lacking, the story could have benefitted from more character development, and the friendships between the characters could have been developed more. I also didn't find the story or characters particularly funny, although there were some fun and satirical moments. Perhaps those who are a fan of the podcast would enjoy this more than I did (I haven't listened to the podcast).

With that being said though, this book deserves an extra star for the artwork alone. I very much enjoyed the artwork and panel layouts. The monsters and actions sequences were fantastic, the pacing and panel layouts were perfect, and I absolutely loved the different colour schemes that were used to depict the various mood and settings.

A bit too hipstery for my tastes but entertaining enough. I liked the pacing, the art, but none of the characters really stood out. The relationships between them were somewhat well developed amidst all the banter (which was funny!) but I wish there had been more. Likewise, what could have been a heartbreaking scene at the endboss fight was so self-aware that it lacked any emotional impact, instead focusing on grand reveals, and power-ups.

Maybe if it had slowed down and been two volumes? Or even multi volumes, as they said they were also adapting AdventureZone. Was fun though.

This was so, so, so fun! Monsters, mutants, an app for calling a hunter to kill monsters and a wish for a normal life...
The art is great, the characters are fun and diverse, the plot - engaging and easy to read.

It started off great! It's Buffy in a sci-fi world fighting alien creatures while quipping! Yes! But the plot didn't hold my interest, and I was a little disappointed. There's a lot going on, and I can get behind the crazysauce over-the-top nature of all of it, but it felt a little random.

Tony Cliff's art was fantastic, as always (although some of the panels were a bit too small for my old eyes).

I enjoyed the concept for how tongue-in-cheek and wacky it is, but this was waaaay too long for me to keep enjoying the millennial humor, and I'm a frickin' millennial.

I did really enjoy the art, the color palette was great and the character designs - especially the monsters - were great.

Morgan, an Imp hunter, lives inside the Fairhaven bubble, with her roommate Annie. Annie uses the monsters Morgan kills to make drugs. When an app called Huntr is created, it allows Morgan to now hunt these monsters for cash, while continuing the drug side business at the same time.

I loved this graphic novel! Its based off of a podcast, which I've never listened to, but am now very interested in. The colour palette was so bright, vibrant and fun to look at. It's very action-packed, with a very fast-paced storyline. I found this to be so funny and the humour was right up my alley. There was multiple times where I was laughing out loud. I loved the characters, especially Mitch. He was such a sweetie pie and I wanted to protect him at all costs. Annie was also wonderful, and she had me cackling on numerous occasions. The interactions that these characters had with one another was a lot of fun, and their banter was great.

It seemed to leave off on a cliff-hanger, so I am hoping there will be a second installment at some point!

So freaking funny, well-paced and punchy. I loved it.
The only gripe I have is that it sped up all of a sudden at the end, kind of gave me whiplash.

Also, I really hope there’s going to be a sequel, that’s all I’ll say.

Based on a popular podcast that I have never listened to.

The art was appealing to me and well done. Lots of consistency and easy to tell the characters apart. I dont know if a graphic novel was the best setting for sharing the lore of the world. I was left with a bunch of questions that did not get answered. Why were they obsessed with 90s culture even though it seemed like another planet? How did the bubbles start?

The biggest problem for me was that some of the jokes delivered onto a graphic novel were a little flat. I could imagine them delivered on a podcast, perhaps with some improv, and the result being amusing. But it was lowkey cringe seeing on paper.

If you're looking for a well done comic with adult themes and choatic friendgroup humor I would recommend giving it a try.

I enjoyed this book a great deal, and would recommend it to folks who enjoyed other funny, energetic, and at times vulgar comics. I'm thinking of Sex Criminals and Chew in particular, but I know there are plenty more that I'm not familiar with. Speaking of, I'm not familiar with the source material here, a podcast, but this story and vibrant artwork definitely made me want more.

My first graphic novel read of 2022 is a resounding success.
A bunch of 20something year olds surviving in the world of gig economy, apps, and 90s nostalgia. But living in a giant bubble. On a distant planet. In a distant (or not so distant, whatever you consider the end of the 2100s to be) future. What madness is this? Well, that dear readers, is the madness of The Bubble. The awesomely hilarious high-octane satirical adventure adapted from a podcast this reviewer has never heard of, but then again, this reviewer is nowhere near hip enough for podcasts.
So, what do a bunch of millennials do in the future, in a world remarkably similar and deliciously different from ours? They slay imps – the monstrous creatures who are native to the planet and like to get into the bubble and make snacks out of its denizens. Slaying imps is the latest in gig economy. All the kids are doing it. Some with more skill and panache than others. This is their story. And it’s so much fun.
Genuinely funny, too. I laughed out loud reading it, a bunch of times, and how often are things that funny anymore? Especially things involving millennials, futuristic or otherwise, a generation generally too precocious and precious for pure laughs.
The art was good too, bright, vivid, and exciting, it brought all the action scenes to life very nicely.
Overall, it’s just such a fun world to visit and hang out in for a while. I enjoyed it very much. Recommended.

Knowing that a graphic novel is based on, influenced by, or adapted from a podcast is normally enough information to make me avoid it. Yet, this one was the monthly selection of a graphic novel book club I am part of, so I checked out the premise/blurbs and decided to give it a go.
I was highly entertained, enjoyed the world-building and characterization and found the whole thing intensely funny. It mocks millennials, the gig economy and several pop culture favorites in a manner that is both respectful and gentle while still getting the joke/point across.
What makes this work even more is the incredible and inventive art of Tony Cliff, which reminds me in many scenes of the engaging adventure comics of Tin Tin and others.
There's plenty going on in this lengthy graphic novel, enough to satisfy me and make a sequel unnecessary reading - - there's such a thing as too much of a good thing. I also feel this gives me a good enough overview of the podcast so that I don't have to set aside time to try and follow it.

2.5 Stars!

Fun, confusing, adventurous, messy and generally enjoyable with a nice use of colour. But the plot and action was poorly rendered and one too many times the narrative ran like pages had been torn out and you were left feeling that major chunks were left out?...This has its funny and clever moments too, but the overall plot was disappointing and inconsistent.

OK, it's silly, relentlessly paced, and contains significant plot holes. BUT, at the same time, it's laugh-out-loud funny, charming, and easy to devour in one sitting. I refuse to critique it for its flaws cause I had too much fun reading it in one go :)

Jag absolut älskar teckningsstilen så mycket det var jättecoolt. Och alla färger och designer och bakgrunder man bara hej. Handlingen var också bra och kändes inte platt som de ibland kan göra i tecknade serier och den var också rolig och så kreativ.

Closer to a 4.5. This book was full of quips about millennial culture and I can't get over the zombie Book Club hive mind that loves margs. I kind of want to be in that book club.
