Lexi is a magic-wielding former assassin who broke away from the shadowy organization that trained her.
Working as a private investigator, her latest case takes her and her partner to Palm Springs, where a shifter is being harassed by a local businessman. But with pack politics and rivalries, this is far more than a property deal gone bad.
Far worse, for Lexi, is that her local contact is her long-time nemesis, the gay vampire detective Dick. If the case doesn’t kill her, working with him again might!
Note: This book was previously released as part of the Legacy of the Shadow’s Blood.
This book is a change from the usual paranormal stories. The characters are unique, and develop an unexpected bond with one another. I'm looking forward to reading the next.
This my first experience with E.G. Bateman's work. It was so much fun to read. Allow your imagination to flow with the characters and the jumps in info will fill themselves in. After all its magic. Again huge thanks to LMBPN Publishing for another great read!
Kindred is an organization that rules over supernaturals. Lexie has escaped from them because she figured out that they were wiping her memory after ever assignment. She is working with a mage and a vampire. A good start to the series.

The Flawed Legacy is the first book in the Legacy of the Shadows Blood series by E. G. Bateman and Michael Anderle.
I was prepared, from reading others reviews, but having what is supposed to be the first book in a new series start somewhere in an obvious continuation is still rather frustrating. The only reason I feel the need to check out the previous book is for some more Dick and Lexi hilarity. And possibly for the hope of seeing how her relationship with Scott came about.
I wonder how the Kindred will come to be a part of their future. They seem like a whole box of crazy honestly. That the supernatural community as a whole places their protection behind this obviously corrupt and dysfunctional organization is not a particularly good omen for the rest of the series.
Delores is an extremely entertaining character. I’m infatuated with her shrinking ability, and that she adds a small dose of fae-ness to this tale. I love that we will see more of Dick within Lexi’s journey to uncover her past, he’s highly entertaining. Especially in how these two bicker, banter, and play off each other. Suffice to say I don’t think he’ll be bored in her presence. I wonder if Betsy will be a more permanent member of their de facto gang?
Also, she is decidedly cute/deadly animal sidekick lacking. This should be resolved with due haste. Preferably something with a sense of humor, knack for destruction, and possibly eating her annoying enemies. I’m not picky.
This series has some really wonderful characters. The rather unconventional 'magic' in the world comes together really well without any over-explaining. The suspense winds up wonderfully, and is definitely a page turner by the time you get near the conclusion. I recommend this series. I am excited to get the next book as soon as I have finished up writing this. Another great series published by LMBPN. As a side note, be sure to check out the author notes at the end. I love the story of how E.G. Bateman ended up collaborating a series with Michael Anderle! Also, good on ya Michael for giving this series a go. Excellent decision. ;) My thoughts for the series? More, more, more! 😀
Oh boy is this a fantastic book!!! Adventure, demons, witches, shifters, vampires and so much more. Lots of sarcasm and dad's fighting demons...and it will have you laughing out loud and get your heart going....Another cracking book....you will so want more - I know I do!!!
Fun fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable read, supporting Mike's new gadget keyboard 😂. That aside, well worth a read and can't wait for the next in the series.
This book has potential, but is falling short on captivating me. It's a "meh" book for me. Alexa's character is a bit disappointing. I'm going to chalk it up to her blood addiction for not being up to par in this book. We already know that's she's flawed, not as strong or as fast her Kindred....but then she goes and act like a total badass only to get her ass knocked out walking thru a door. She doesn't have any of her own magic, so she's leeching on Scott's and what little she does get from him get drained quickly. Honestly, Dolores could've just sent Scott to help Dick figure this case out...seeming as bad as Alexa keeps getting her ass handed to her. I like the action and flow of the story line. The characters are all unique and entertaining, butttt I'm hoping we'll get more into detail with some of these characters.
The last 10% of this book was a total disappointment. The fact no one tried to kill the Sorcerer to end all this chaos. I was so disappointed at Alexa for being so useless...I mean, she could've summon a gun and shoot, or throw some shuriken, use magic, even a freaking rock to attempt to kill or distract the Sorcerer when he was unleashing all his powers. Why did Scott or Dolores not use his powers on the Sorcerer. Noooo, they all just stood there like a bunch of norms watching a horror movie. At least come up with an excuse, like the Sorcerer had a barrier protecting him. Then, it just ended aburptly....all anticlimatic. Not even saved by one of the MCs, but some random wolf.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend reading this book.
While the plot is linear and the characters are marginally flushed out, the storyline just isn't cohesively refined. Some parts can be challenging to follow. The writing, however, has moments of lucid, vivid passages which evoke clear imagery - but it is far in-between to keep the reader actively engaged throughout.
The book cover description of the premise of breaking away from the shadowy organization that trained Lexi, the main protagonist, is hardly touched upon in the novel. The scenes where agents of the agency, Kindred, appear lend no background to Lexi's storyline nor does it develop any of the other characters with anything tangible.
If you're looking for an urban fantasy with vampires, werewolves and female leads, maybe try Laurell Hamilton, Kelley Armstrong or Kim Harrison.
I felt while reading this book as if I'd missed a prequel.
Because I was lost. The organization Kindred wasn't explained well. There was little or no background on the main characters. Not much for World Building, either.
Turns out there is a freebie book offered on another website. Likely it gives the background missing in this 'first' book in a series. Grrrrrr. Sorry, but if it ain't on Amazon, I don't read it. Can't be bothered, and I really don't want unwanted emails due to signing up on an Author's website.
In spite of it all, though, I enjoyed this story. Action, various Supernaturals, decent writing, and a touch of humor. Good ending. Will I read the next book? Probably.
Junkie hunter, flamboyant gay vampire and an overerly empathetic sorcerer walk into a bar.... This is funny. Lexi is a hunter of paranormal bad guys and has partnered with a highly empathetic sorcerer. Only to need help from a very flamboyant gay vampire she may or may not have tried to kill. Nothing could possibly go wrong for them when working together.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, its full of wit, action and snark, which I love in a good read. Please do me a favour and have a go yourself, you won't regret it, I can promise you that for certain. You will be laughing all the time and just enjoy the escapism that this book gives to you, there's nothing better.
