Ruling Magic #1

The Counterbalance

Rate this book
Mother can’t kill me. Not that she hasn’t tried.

I’m the heir to a modern-day magical dynasty, daughter of the most powerful mage in existence. From day one, Mother made it apparent that she never wanted me—never wanted an heir at all.

That’s why she’s forced me into the shadows, where I remain invisible. Nobody even knows what I truly look like. Locked away, I dream of ordinary things. You know. Friends. A boyfriend. A purpose for my existence…

But I’ve got secrets too. Things she can’t find out.

For years, I’ve watched her scheme to expand her grip on the mage world. Like a snake, she waits for the right moment to strike. If she succeeds, there will be deadly consequences.

As my powers grow, I think Mother and I have both come to the same conclusion.

I might be the only thing that stands in her way.

WHY IS THIS BOOK NOT GETTING MORE HYPE?!

This was amazing. I was so depressed when the book was over!

I love the modern day setting in New York City mixed with all the ancient type magic. It was really refreshing.
There are so many side characters that you can’t help but love and root for them. I even cried a couple times for the side characters and their stories. They ended up feeling like my friends. I love when an author can accomplish that.

This book also contained my favorite trope...
ENEMIES TO LOVERS! Yay. 🥳😍

I would compare this book to The Shatter ME series because of all the political intrigue and not knowing who to trust and the constant betrayals.

"Being Heir to a modern-day magical dynasty is a real bitch"

Okay, let me ask myself a question: WHY did it take me so long to read this absolutely wonderful book!? Please don't be like me, and start reading Bolts' "Ruling Magic" series as soon as you can. There's just so much to *love* in these books. Our main character, Isla "Iz" Luciano, is the heir to the throne of Splendor, a Mage nation located in our world. Her mother, Magnate Victoria Luciano, can't kill her; but she loves torturing Isla by punishing others every time Iz so much as breathes the wrong way. After being kept in isolation and away from her people for so long, Iz has become the only person that may be able to put an end to Magnate Victoria's reign of terror; and she's not willing to go down without a fight.

"Some people had nightmares; I just had memories."

"Intoxicating" is the best way to describe this book. From the first pages, Lissa Bolts introduces the reader to a magical world full of secrets, games of power, double-faced people, and intrigue, in which Isla needs to learn her way around if she hopes to rescue her nation from her mother's claws. The Ruling Magic world is a really interesting one, and the characters that inhabit it are just as incredible. Although I tend to have a hard time liking female main characters who are badass and proactive, Isla was an immediate platonic crush. She's cunning, she's sharp-witted, she's brave, and she's sassy; but she's also compassionate, thoughtful, kind, and has a very strong sense of justice. I really loved getting to know her, and you'll find me rooting for Isla Luciano until my face goes blue! This is what a strong female MC looks like, everyone! Growing up in a really abusive household, she's had to learn to fend for herself and her people, and she does so every time she can. Her mother's sick mind tends to find a way to get revenge on her whenever she does so, and watching Isla struggle with guilt made her both more human, and even more admirable. She's such a well-built character!

"When you grow up in a court of vipers, you quickly learn that words have power."

Then there's the matter of the plot itself, which is basically an action-packed rollercoaster. Lissa sure knows how to write compelling stories... I was physically unable to stop reading! Kept at the edge of my seat, invested in Isla and her shenanigans, and concerned about the evil plans of Magnate Victoria, I found myself devouring "The Counterbalance" in one sitting, and instantly jumping onto the next installment of the series. Very, very few books have hooked me as much as this one did.

"The Counterbalance" is a triumph in terms of YA Fantasy. I'll read anything Lissa Bolts writes with gusto anytime!

I honestly am in love with this story!
From the start, it sucked me in with the plot being incredibly gripping. I really did spend until about 2 am last night reading it, I didn't want to put it down.

The character development as well as the plot was amazing. This book will certainly be labelled as one of my top ten favourites. I'll definitely be ordering the physical book for sure!

I loved the depth of the characters, and how strong of a character Iz was. I was really drawn into her character with her brilliant humour, but also her badass attitude.

I also really liked how the characters around her didn't just support but also had individuality themselves. Every character had a soul, it was incredible writing.

These types of books are honestly my favourite, the magic realism is honestly my favourite genre with hints of action, humour and romance filtered in. This book is a new adult plot inspired by Cinderella. Normally I don't like re-tellings as I can guess where they're going from knowing the original story, but this really blew my theories out of the park. I loved that I couldn't guess where the story was going. Twists and turns are always the best.

I really can't wait until the next book is out, I certainly didn't want to put this book down!!

Amazing debut novel, completely enjoyable, fast-paced read, strong, likeable heroine who cannot keep herself out of trouble and I went and re-read that kiss scene and so will you. Recommended for lovers of Cinderella tales, urban fantasy, strong female leads, sarky humour and believable fight-scenes.

This story was amazing! I was hooked right from the beginning and could not put it down until the end and then I immediately had to get the second one. The powers and the way they work is intriguing and Iz is such an awesome main character. I also like the slow build up between her and the Sovereign. It had mystery, action, sarcasm, kick butt heroine, and all around awesomeness.

“The Counterbalance” by Lissa Bolts marks the start of her new fantasy series “Ruling Magic”, that offers some reminiscences of the classical Cinderella tale into a modern setting. Isla Theodora Luciano (FMC) as the daughter of the most powerful known Mage is the lawfully heir to the magical dynasty of Splendor, and a danger to her mother, Magnate Victoria, plans, who – fully aware of Isla’s power - has locked her up from the very beginning, to the point that only four person really know the real Isla. Isla dreams of a normal existence, and be able to live without fear, have a purpose, find love. And love she finds, in the person of a Mage prince, who will become the catalysator that starts a series of events, which would change the status-quo forever.

Lissa Bolts story is compelling, well-written, and offers interesting and relatable characters embedded into a well-constructed world, in a brand-new take of the Cinderellian trope, showing the struggle of a young female to escape her imposed confinement and fulfill her fate. Easy to read, fast-paced, action-filled, and enjoyable from start to finish. Already looking forward to the book in the series.

The main character is perfectly fleshed out and you are immediately vested in her decisions hoping that everything works out , she instantly becomes someone you instantly cheer for .
The world building is familiar settings that you know and therefore everything flows flawlessly .
So if you are considering buying this book , stop reading this and buy it then you will be like me dying to know more of this fantastic story . So buy it , read it , love it and review it helps the authors more than you know .

If you're interested in a magic ruling realm, a mother-daughter relationship on the rocks, and a heart-warming romance, then this is the book for you. The entire world Lissa creates is much like our own, but with the basis of magic overshadowing everything makes each page a delight. There are rules her characters play, and each character is relatable in some way or another.

You become invested, I'll tell you that much, that when you get to that last page, you're ready for the next book.

This is a new coming series you'll have to add to your reading list, because trust me, it'll be worth it!

Amazing story! I couldn't put it down. I was reading it a chapter at a time, as a reward for completing other tasks, but eventually gave up on the tasks because I had to finish the story. A combination of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast with a whole world of magic and intrigue, it was unputdownable. I literally cannot wait for the sequel. Lissa Bolts is a wonderful author who knows how to get you hooked!

Fast-paced, snappy, with an original premise, The Counterbalance is an impressive debut. I was so intrigued by the relationship between the main character and her mother, and I think the author did a fantastic job of showing the long-term effects her mother's abuse had on Isla.

This FMC definitely suffered from Perfect Girl Syndrome. But if you’re wanting a break from high fantasy and complex characters that frustrate you, this is a good YA Urban Fantasy for that. I enjoyed the simple mix of magic with the real world. It was entertaining enough that I’ll be reading the next!

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 5

Fab, eventful and dynamic novel!

🔮“The Counterbalance” by Lissa Bolts / Book review
 ___
🔮If you need a dynamic and eventful YA fantasy novel with lots of magic rules, this book is definitely what you need!
___
Genre: YA fantasy novel
Pages: 268
Language: English
Release date: 2020

🔮The Plot:  “The Counterbalance” is the first book in the “Ruling Magic” trilogy (so far). We are diving into a world where mages live among ordinary people (norms) and influence their lives considerably. 21 y.o. Isla Luciano is an heir to a modern-day powerful magical dynasty. The life of the girl is not so cloudless as it may seem at first sight.  ‘At home, even the walls help’ – doesn’t relate to young Isla.
On the contrary. She feels caged being at home. Moreover, her authoritarian mother, who tries to control a girl’s life, appears to be more dangerous than Isla expects. One day, Isla has a chance to leave her “home prison” and stand against her mother. But whether her magic powers are enough to face all the scary challenges?
🔮The Writing Style: Well, I would like to mention that this book is when a fantastic cover (that caught my attention) perfectly matches the captivating content. I would probably characterize the writing style as an elegant one. Besides, there is a fabulous mix of humor, sarcasm, wit, heartbreaking, and touching scenes. Well-thought world-building, where mages live among norms, includes perfect examples of real events. This overlaying gives a beautiful charm to the novel. Truth to be told, it’s the most dynamic and eventful fantasy novel I’ve recently read. This book grabbed my attention from the first chapters and didn’t let me go until the end.
🔮The Characters: There are many characters and sub-characters. The elegance of the writing style made them all perfect in all aspects – from their mode of dress to their inner worlds and musings. I loved how the author described the vulnerability and first sparks of the budding relationship of the main characters. I adored how the author represents an eternal battle of good and evil that the characters are involved in.
🔮Warnings: Murder, assassination attempts, death, tortures, grief, anxiety
🔮The fave quote: “The best lie is based in truth.”
🔮Would I read other books by this author:  yes!
🔮My humble rating is: 5/5

This is a terrific book. So good that I went and bought book two straight away. What a brilliant read, I couldn’t put it down. The characters are amazing, each with their issues that tug at the heart strings.
Isla is an amazing character, downtrodden, abused, but beneath her neutral exterior, she has more than enough guts to find a way to stand to up to her mother. She tries to help her people, her kindness a counterbalance to her mother’s vitriol, but it isn’t enough.
This book starts with action and doesn’t stop. You won’t be able to put it down. The magical world is a clever balance to the ‘normal world’. Isla’s power is growing, hidden and muted, but she when the opportunity arises, she grabs it with both hands, and shows us she is one gutsy young lady.
Highly recommend you pick up this book, you won’t regret it. The adventure continues in Book Two: Being Remade.

Omg yessss! SO GOOD!

I was SHOCKED to learn that this was the authors first ever fully written book... it was SO GOOD! I am an AVID reader of this genre (I seriously read 20+ books a month) and this was FANTASTIC. I easily get bored with some books because of how many I’ve read, some plots always seem just way too alike, but this one was so unique and I could NOT PUT IT DOWN! Seriously... I read this book within hours. And I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SECOND ONE!!

So! If you’re into UNIQUE PLOT LINES, CREATIVE TWISTS, AN AWESOME HEROINE, A SEXY PRINCE, SERIOUS SUSPENSE, WITTY BANTER, and ALL THE FEELS ... this is the book for you! I will be sharing this title throughout all of my reading groups because this book deserves to be read!!

An upgraded Cinderella story for adults, with danger, betrayal, and nonstop action. I loved the strong female lead, a survivor who has brains and beauty. Add in romance with a Mage prince, and you've got a story that's sure to please! I can't wait to see how they work it all out in the next installment of this modern day fantasy world filled intrigue and magic.

[Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book through the Goodreads giveaways in exchange for an honest review. This does not, however, affect my review in any way.]

I'll get right to it. This book is a lot of fun. I told my wife that it is a guilty-pleasure read. It is light, quick-paced, full of action, and does not spend pages and pages on gratuitous dialogue. It very much reminds me of similar books in the magical/fantasy genre with a young-adult focus: such as Hunger Games, Divergent, or even the Harry Potter books. I would put this book on par with each of the first installments in those series - my guess is that all authors need a bit of luck to find the recipe for a blockbuster hit and that may separate this book from those aforementioned ones.

Isla is the heir to the magical territory encompassing most of the eastern portion of North America. Her mother - the ruler - sucks with a capital S. We like Isla. You cannot not like Isla. Whether it is the severe abuse she has suffered at the hands of her sadistic mother or the internal monologue, she is just a likeable character (even if a bit overpowered as we come to find later). The story follows Isla as her world gets turned even more upside-down than her normal life being imprisoned in the family estates. Isla's mother keeps her tucked away because her mother only inherited her "Ruling Magic" (magical abilities far exceeding those of normal mages) through Isla's birth and is jealous/envious that her powers do not affect Isla (Isla's mother can make people do what she wants through compulsion).

Bolts does a good job with the action scenes, keeping them interesting and entertaining. It wouldn't be a YA-fantasy without a love interest and lovable cast of friends. All-in-all, I really didn't want to put this one down as I found myself generally interested in the world (which is much like our own except, magic) and those who strive to make it better.

Similarly, and on the flip side, this book also has its moments where things just go totally crazy and unrealistic. Yeah, I know, a realistic fantasy is basically an oxymoron. But you know what I mean. There are moments when sometimes I just had to chuckle at the deus ex machina nature of what occurred.

Final Verdict: 4.1 out of 5

It isn't the kind of book that will spawn wikis and fan fiction but it is still entertaining. If you just want to pick something up and get lost in it for a while, I highly recommend this book. My biggest gripe with it is how it ended. Bolts definitely wants us to read the second book and she is making it a bit difficult for me not to based on the ending and what is left unresolved.

Great first book and I'm interested in reading the series now.

A great first novel from debut author, Lissa Bolts. This YA novel is fast paced with great character development and an ending that leaves you wanting more, but in a good way.

The Counterbalance takes fantasy elements, such as magic and monarchy, but pulls them into our modern world. With settings in North and Central America, landmarks are familiar with a mythical twist. We follow Isla, daughter of the ruler of Splendor (North America) as she makes her way, albeit not of her own accord, to a neighboring land (Central America) and fights to stop a brewing war between the lands. She meets Rik, the brother of her only friend, and of course … starts to fall in love! But can she get the guy and keep her mother from starting a war?

Yays 🙌🏼
-Great character voice. I could hear Isla talking through the descriptions and the dialogue. Nothing felt forced or awkward.
-Descriptions were spot on and not wordy.
-Perfect ending, although … I’m ready for the next book.
-This did not feel like a debut novel. There were not a lot of cliché phrases or language. It felt fresh and exciting.
-Minimal language and no F-bombs. I feel comfortable letting my teenage daughter read this. There is romance but it’s not smutty and clean for young teens to read.
-I loved that it’s a blend of fantasy in our modern time. Too many times we think fantasy must be medieval without modern comforts. It’s refreshing to read a book with magic but set in our day and time.

Nays 😕
-I think Isla and Remmy’s relationship felt a bit rushed. I understand Isla was secluded and alone most of the time. I could see her clinging to Remmy, but I couldn’t see Remmy reciprocating as quickly.
-I want more info on her mother! I know there is a prequel, which I have read, which may be why I wanted more. I’m hoping book two brings more of Victoria into the story line.
-It’s not really a con, but the amulet confounds me. I’m not really sure why Victoria forced Isla to wear it, but maybe that’s coming up in the next book, or maybe I read it and I forgot. It does work to Isla’s advantage with having a second look so she can be sneaky. I am curious if it also changes her voice? I did notice she has the same personality when she is unveiled and sneaking around in a later part of the book. People who might not recognize her appearance, may be able to tell who she is because of her voice.

I give this book 5 stars out of 5 and I recommend to anyone looking for a fresh take of magical realism. Can’t wait for the next book!

A binge-worthy addiction! I saw the beautiful cover and debut author on Instagram, impulsively bought the book on release day, couldn't put the book down, then fell into *serious* 'post-book depression' as soon as I finished reading. What a fantastic story made even more irresistible by leading lady Isla. She's resilient, snarky-clever, and genuinely charismatic as she interacts with a wide cast of exceptional characters. I particularly appreciate her ability to overcome impossible odds... with style! The action/adventure was consistent and compelling. And romance? YES WAY! This book was the perfect way to spend my Saturday.
I can't stop thinking about it.
I can't stop talking about it.
I can't wait for the sequel.
No really, Lissa. Would you release book 2 before March, please?

Wonder Woman meets Hunger Games

Wow! I read this debut novel in one day and I may have found me another favourite indie author. Yay! When Isla finds herself in the middle of her mother’s conspiracy to start a war over resources (and power), she can only rely on her own wits. I loved Iz and her no-nonsense, head-on approach to things, like handling her assassination attempts (yes, plural), absolutely adored her huge heart and how she has a mind of her own. The description of her fighting scenes and how she learnt to surf was a gem! As are her dialogues with Rick. Can’t wait to read more about their budding relationship in the next instalment, out in March 2021. If you love strong female leads, a bit of romance intermingled with lots of action and adventure, laced with bouts of magical feats, this one’s up your alley. Definitely recommend! And I found the book in one of the 0.99$ Xmas sales, so it goes to show that it pays to check out those. ;)

First things first, can we talk about that cover??? So simple, yet so striking.

Anyway, moving on...

I highly enjoyed this!! 'The Counterbalance' is a quick read, but it's stuffed to the brim with a little bit of everything the fantasy genre has to offer. It takes the present day magical empire scenario I think everyone has dreamt about at some point in their life, throws in a bit of Rapunzel, and BOOM! It all works so well. Even when things would get a little predictable, there's an awareness to the writing, and the author is able to subvert expectations a bit. Iz is such a likeable main character, and the supporting cast has such charm.

Suffice to say, I am very much looking forward to the sequel!

Highly recommend

I loved this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline although neither was entirely original they made for a fun read. Our heroine is a princess with a nasty mother who hates her and her magic abilities. Princess meets prince and gets a huge crush, ferrets out deadly conspiracy and works to stop it. The writing makes it much more interesting then it sounds. This is my first five star rating of the year and happily there are more books ahead.

I loved, loved, loved it! It was a perfect NA urban fantasy with magic, action, danger and slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance. The writing and story was so captivating that I read it in one sitting. Lissa Bolts knows how to write great characters, so I fell in love with them.
I read this book a couple of days ago and I already want to reread it over and over, that's how good it was. One of my new favourite series.
If you enjoy urban fantasy or any fantasy for that matter then The Counterbalance is a must read!

In a powerful Cinderella reimagined story, mother and daughter are pitted against one another for control of a magical empire. Bolts is an expert at world building and the characterization is first rate - all serving to create a wonderful read that the reader is totally engrossed in. When does the next book come out!?! - it’s going to be impossible to wait!! A winner in every way!
