I read this book when it first came out and it inspired me then, powering me to run my first Boston Marathon as a back of the pack rat. Then 40 seemed old. It surfaced as I unpacked after a move and I decided to read it again. I had forgotten how much like Betty I am. Now that I am over 50 it is more so. It was fun to read, and a quick read, almost sorry to see it end. I can really identify with Betty and why she likes to run--poetry in motion. I am not poetry yes. But doing something just for me is important right now. Nonetheless, the book is a little trite. We know the outcome before the book even begins. But I laughed out loud when she runs over the MassPike overpass by Fenway Park. I remember that hillock so well. I watched the movie too. Who can forget Joanne Woodward with the headlights silhouetting her as she finishes running the last few miles? So glad I read it, inspiring again as I train for the Disney Princess Half Marathon with my sights back on Boston.
