Charley Hall #4

Odds on Murder

Rate this book
Desperate to prove herself, just how far will she go to get the story?

1948: Kingston, Canada—When the man who replaced her on the Kingston Tribune’s city beat, asks for help with a story about corruption at City Hall, reporter Charley Hall grudgingly agrees. At the very least, she hopes it will prove to her editor she’s a serious reporter.

But when a city official turns up dead at the site of a controversial land deal and her co-worker’s infant son is kidnapped, a devastated Charley fears her reporting may have been the catalyst.

All bets are off as everyone falls under suspicion, and Charley faces her darkest days since the war when her husband went MIA.

Odds on Murder is the fourth book in the atmospheric Charley Hall historical mystery series. If you like strong female protagonists, period pieces, and small-town misdeeds, then you’ll love Brenda Gayle’s compelling whodunit series.

Life is messy and I try to reflect that in my stories while still leaving readers with a feeling of hope. I want them to see themselves and people they know in my characters.

You could say writing is in my genes. My paternal grandmother was a formidable diarist; my father was a journalist and poet; my sister and cousin are both published authors; even my son has shown a talent for putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) to tell awesome stories. So, it came as no surprise to anyone when I returned to my love of fiction after more than 20 years in the world of corporate communications–although some might argue there was plenty of opportunity for fiction-writing there, too.

A fan of many genres, I find it hard to stay within the publishing industry’s prescribed boxes. Whether it’s romantic suspense, women’s fiction,or mystery—my greatest joy is creating deeply emotional books with memorable characters and compelling stories.

On a Winning Streak

In the fourth historical mystery set in Kingston, Ontario after World War II, Charley Hall, a reporter for a local paper, continues to battle for the right to cover hard news stories rather than write fluff for the women's pages. But when her replacement on the city beat needs help with a big story, he asks Charley, with her wealth of contacts, for help. They are soon enmeshed in two possible murders, mob efforts to organize illegal gambling clubs, an abducted baby, a suspicious land deal and a mysterious immigrant with possible ties to to Hitler's Third Reich.

Other characters from previous books also make an appearance here, and some of their stories are open ended. Charley is a sympathetic and caring woman with strong family ties and loyal friends. Scenes of post war Canada in the competitive world of
print journalism reflect the author's meticulous research. Charley is a fascinating and evolving character and I look forward to reading her further adventures

Another excellent read. It was very interesting to learn how a newspaper reporter goes about getting their stories. And it was also fun to learn how some of the wealthier people deal with their own problem. If you enjoyed the last three books of Brenda Gayle you will enjoy this book as well.

All of my questions from the previous book were answered and nice wrap to quite a few questions. Charley is definitely making progress in her professional career and glad to see Freddie's life is improving. I love all the supporting characters. Already starting the next book.
