When the animals of Summer’s menagerie get loose and create havoc, he decides enough is enough. But things aren’t always as they appear, and Coop stumbles upon the secret the Thorne sisters have been hiding.
Coop and Summer discover Morty holds the key to unlock a twenty-year-old mystery surrounding the death of Summer’s mother. Now Coop is faced with breaking the law he is sworn to uphold in order to protect Summer and her beloved pet from a threat more dangerous than any of them imagined.

This is one of those tough-to-rate books, folks. There’s lots and lots of great stuff here. But...there’s also the fact that I hated the hero, Cooper, with the heat of a thousand suns, which is somewhat problematic in a romance novel.
But before I get ahead of myself, here’s the good stuff:
1. The world building is pretty good. And it’s not easy to find good world building in paranormal romance that doesn’t include vampires and shifters.
2.There is some truly hilarious banter between characters throughout the story. It was really well done. The author has a nice, flowy, fun writing style that’s really fresh in the paranormal market.
3. I liked all the side characters in Summer’s family. They were pretty obvious sequel-bait, but that’s OK because they were fun and interesting in their own unique ways.
4. Morty the chimp. He paints and plays jokes on people. He’s awesome. That is all.
And then, the bad…
Cooper: I’m not even exaggerating when I say I hate this guy with the heat of a thousand suns. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve hated a romance novel hero as much as I hate Cooper. I can forgive him for purposefully crushing Summer’s heart in high school because he was just a dumb kid. A cruel asshat of a dumb kid, but a dumb kid nonetheless. What I can’t forgive is all the times he hurt Summer when they were grown ups. Even after he tells her he loves her and won’t ever hurt her again, he STILL manages to hurt her a few times. One time he even manages to hurt her physically because he acted a fool. And I don’t find it AT ALL believable that a guy who is THAT concerned with whether or not Summer has the ability to control his mind would ever truly accept her for what she is. He was a fair-weather boyfriend and if I was Summer, I would’ve nut-punched him and walked away forever. He was jealous when he had no right to be, short-tempered, stubborn, arrogant, and narrow-minded. He’s lucky he’s good looking, because in my mind, that’s his only redeeming quality.
Summer: Summer would be a decent heroine if not for Cooper. There’s something about Cooper that turns her into a weak doormat. The fact that she didn’t at any point nut-punch Cooper irks me to the point that I’m not sure I can forgive her as a character.
Keaton: Cooper’s brother Keaton is set up as the obvious sequel-bait hero in the next book in the series, and sadly, he’s just as much of a tool as Cooper. I hated him just about as much as I hated Cooper. He was a complete ass to Summer and her sister, Autumn, and he has the same small-minded jackass tendencies that Cooper showed. So, even though I really liked Autumn as a character, I’m not sure I can stomach watching her end up with a fuckwit like Keaton.
All the surprise relatives: Oh, Lord, there is a lot of family drama going on here. In my personal opinion, there should only be 1 jaw-dropping family secret per book. It’s just TOO MUCH to have surprise relatives and shocking family revelations popping up in every chapter. And since most of those surprises were also obvious sequel-bait...well, it got old REAL fast.
Cliffie alert: Yep, it’s a cliffie. There is no resolution in this book. You’re left with a HFN for Cooper and Summer, but that’s about it. Cliffies often feel like a ploy to trick me into reading other books in a series and I don’t really appreciate that. I tolerate them in urban fantasy, but not so much in romance. Boo, cliffie!
So, long-story-short, even though I violently hated the hero and had some problems with other characters and the cliffie, I still read the whole book and found parts of it to be super enjoyable. I’m not ruling out the possibility of reading other books in the series, but Keaton better grovel A LOT or else I’ll DNF his ass so fast his head will spin.

Summer Magic by T M Cromer 1st book in The Thorne Witches series. Contemporary paranormal romance.
The sisters are outed as witches in the small town of Leiper’s Fork. Sheriff Cooper is not happy and orders them gone! It doesn’t matter that he’s been denying his love for Summer since the age of 5. But there is a mystery behind the pet sanctuary that forces Summer and Coop to work together. His eyes are soon opened to the good the sisters do for the community.
Not dark spell casting, caldron stirring witches, more on the light side. Think Bewitched with a twitch of a nose and instant transporting from one location to another. I’m told books 2 - 4 are a bit darker. Humorous points throughout. I laughed out loud at the scene with the talking squirrels threatening the baby elephant.
Twists at the end were surprisingly intriguing and made me check to make sure I had the second book on my bookshelf.
I alternated between a paperback copy and an audiobook. The narrator, Abby Craden, did a great job with voice variations and sneezes.
I thought I was getting into a fun, witchy romp but it ended up being a play-by-play of the absolute worst couple I have ever read. Seriously, Summer and Coop suck. They broke up and got back together like 500 times. He was a complete jackass. She cried and ran back to him every time he apologized. Stupid sex scenes ensue. Like oh my god just shoot me already.
There also wasn't much of a plot outside of family drama. I got the feeling early on that I was going to like Summer's sisters Winter and Spring more than her and Autumn, but I can't bring myself to keep reading because I have to wade through the muck of Summer and Autumn's relationship drama first.
I should have stopped reading when one of the characters said "wild monkey sex".
I just couldn't read anymore of this demeaning drivel.
What intelligent, highly educated woman could be so hurt and still succumb to a smoldering look. Yielding her independent nature to this high testosterone filled jerk? Obviously I didn't care for the characters, plus the plot was week. I respect the endeavor. It takes time and bravery to put ones written word out to the world to view, but sorry, I just could finish it.
TL;DR: How did this book ever get more than 1 star. If I could remember who recommended it, I'd permanently remove their influence on my books 😂 potential spoilers ahead, read at your own risk.
If I didn't know better I'd think this had been written in 1997. It wasn't. 2018. 😳😬 2018!!
"Females"?
"I'm worse than a chick" - because he's experiencing longing for the FMC? 🙄🤢 It's 2022, we love a secure king.
It gets so much worse, buckle up.
There was foreshadowing dialogue setting up another of the couples for a future book I guess - Keaton and Autumn, and the way he spoke to and about her? Absolutely not. The only thing that could make me read that is if she used her magic to make his dick fall off and then made passionate love to a guy actually worth a shit in front of him.
MMC being a trigger happy cop was just icing on the crap cake. He almost MURDERS her sister in front of her because apparently a little magic, barely used on him, was terrifying enough to inspire gun toting rage. *Audible scoff* She used it twice as a direct result of him trying to use his size as an advantage in situations where the lil lady couldn't possibly have known better than him and she evened the scales. Ironic that his reaction to her making things a little more equal was to completely flip out.
Then, THEN, he SHOOTS her while trying to shoot one of her pets after creating the problem with the beloved wild animal multiple times to begin with and then gets more upset about the magic saving her from what HE did and the fact that he didn't successfully murder the animal than he is by the fact that he could have killed her. (I'm not even gonna get into how problematic the issues with a wild chimp running around are, those are valid points and are lost in the ridiculousness of his reactions to her and her magic).
I finally DNF'd at 37% after he threatens to arrest her entire family because they could "hurt someone else or be the reason for it." WHAT?! You self righteous asshole. You put multiple people's lives in danger in the space of 5 minutes because you couldn't control your fee-fee's and your gun is the solution to that but SHE'S the dangerous one? Done. Done-zo, finished, this dude is irredeemable, worthless, and this "love story" is toxic trash.
The whole point of books like this is the fantasy. Nothing about him was desirable. The women in this family are apparently destined for one true love, even if he's a murderous dick. Girl, stay happy with your menagerie and your sisters. Not for me.
I enjoyed this book. There is a satisfying ending to the book, but it did make me want to immediately pick up book two.
I liked the characters. Coop is a bit stubborn and seems to have some trouble accepting his feelings for Summer. I do get a little annoyed with Coop at times. He was a little too hot and cold sometimes. He says that he doesn't have feelings for her, but he doesn't want her to be with anyone else.
There is a bit of a mystery surrounding Summer's mother. I'm looking forward to finding out more in book two.
The heroine was an annoying doormat, who cried at the drop of a hat and pined for years after a jerk who treated her horribly. And there was hardly any plot. The one positive is there were some humorous moments.
First off, I think the actual plot wasn't terrible, it could have been a decent read.
What I have a problem with is the perpetuation of the "If a boy likes you, he'll be mean to you" thing. This guy was incredibly cruel to Summer when they were in high school, he intentionally did something he KNEW would hurt her, and somehow, ten years later, she STILL likes him. He's STILL mean to her, he uses his power and influence as the sheriff to try and shut down her animal rescue, at one point AFTER they're "together" he tells her and her sisters that they have to leave town, because he can't deal with his own emotions. That's not to mention the time he thinks about strangling her because he yet again got irate about something he doesn't understand, or the time that he said some mean things to her and the author says "It would have hurt less if he had struck her."
My best friend just divorced a narcissistic abuser, and some of the things Coop was saying to Summer, I felt like someone was reading me screenshots of the asinine things her ex has texted her since she filed for divorce. He tells her he loves her, she says it's not enough, he says yes it is, it can be, I can do better, give me another chance, etc.
So, I won't be finishing this series. Big no thanks to glorifying abusive partners.
If you're looking for a book in which every single character in the book is either incredibly gorgeous or handsome you'll find that out by page 3. The male protagonist (Cooper) the sheriff should be in jail.. About a quarter of the way through the book he actually pulls out a gun intending to shoot one of three unarmed women and for some ridiculous reason this is ok. That's when I couldn't read any more.
I don't recommend this book to anyone. Especially young adults.
It started out great! If the author had stopped halfway through I would have given this story 5 stars, but instead she started an emotional rollercoaster, while she introduced new characters and lay down the foundation for a longer series. Honestly, the last half was painful to get through, and I kind of wish I had just put it down around page 125 (halfway through chapter 16). From there on out it was a slow and painful decline.
This was a freebie! I enjoyed the first half of the story! I liked the sisters and the talking animals! But the 2nd half of the story involved family secrets that became somewhat convoluted! And I disliked Cooper, Summer's idiot love interest! 3.5 stars!
Summer always loved Cooper but for years it was not meant to be. Then one day her animals got loose and Coop finally acknowledged his true feelings for Summer. Now if only Coop could handle Summer being a Witch. Recommend this book and series.
Summer Magic is book one in The Thorne Witches.. I truly loved this book. It was funny and so many laugh out loud moments. One not so much. It warmed my heart. Any time animals are in a story or kids I love them.
Summer Thorne is one funny and sassy witch. Her animals, and her sisters mean the world to her. She’s had a thing for Cooper Carlyle for a long time. But he wants nothing to do with her.
Cooper doesn’t know why Summer always gets under his skin. Well maybe it’s because her animals she keeps rescuing end up in his yard. One in particular Eddie the elephant. It’s pretty funny. He feels truly guilty about the way he treated her in high school. When his cousin wants to date her he’s not too happy about it.
He doesn’t know the real Summer until his brother tells him. See what happens. Buy the book!!!
Twists and turns that were awesome. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Highly recommend.
This is one of my favorite books this year. The four Thorne sisters, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn, are known as the weird “season sisters” in their small hometown. Summer Thorne has been in love with Cooper Carlyle as long as she can remember but Cooper broke her heart when they were in high school. Now Summer is a veterinarian and runs a sanctuary for abused animals. It is the sanctuary that bothers Cooper. He thinks the animals are dangerous and need to go. This is a paranormal romance and there is a lot of melodramatic back and forth between the two MC’s. I loved Summer’s character. She is strong and willing to do what it takes to protect those she loves. Cooper was a bit harder to like in the beginning, but I eventually came to understand his motives and feelings. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to read Autumn’s story next!
I've been staring at these beautiful covers for years and decided to give the first book a go. I love the whole concept of witchy sisters living their lives in a small town and finding love. There were also a few adventures along the way and some mysteries thrown in so this book had a bit of everything. I lost some of the romance as the story progressed because there was so much that book one has to explain and fit in, but eventually I was satisfied with how everything turned out. Over, I found it to be a quick and fun paranormal romance and have already finished the next two books.
Summer Magic was a great read and I look forward to picking up the second book in the series. Summer Thorne is a from a small town were she is in known as a witch but what no one knows it's that she is really a witch. Then there is sheriff Cooper who is very hot and cold with summer through the books so much so that I felt like I had whiplash from the back and fourth he was was doing thought the story. I loved how coop came around after everything that had happened in the a story and overall I was pleased with the ending of book one and can't wait to read the next book in the series.
The relationship is unhealthy and frustrating. I was actually rooting against the main couple. They're not good for each other and this book just perpetuates the myth that if you love someone, you should be with them no matter what. I was annoyed everyone pushed them to be together. It feels like a relationship conjured from an immature mind who doesn't yet understand healthy relationship dynamics.
This review is hidden due to spoilers. If you're reading this, you've been warned. I'm gonna talk about alllll the things.
This started out kind of fun, but midway through seemed like it turned into a completely different book, and by the end was just a slog to get through.
First, the title makes me think of one of my favorite Hayley Mills movies, which made me happy. Then mid-way through (more about this in a second), it switches to another Hayley Mills classic, The Parent Trap, and even though I like that movie, this twist wasn't great.
Summer is a witch who has been in love with Cooper, the literal boy next door, her whole life. Cooper was a dick about it when they were young. I was feeling this storyline.
Summer is a large animal vet who uses her powers to communicate with them and rehabilitates animals others don't want, while the animals make Cooper's day difficult and he wants to shut down her animal sanctuary. I was also feeling this storyline.
During the sanctuary shenanigans, believing Summer's rescue chimp is dangerous, trigger-happy Cooper pulls a freaking gun and tries to shoot the chimp but thanks to witchy interference shoots Summer instead. I was less here for that... but inner angst-whore Violet? Yeah, she was definitely feeling that storyline.
The book started to lose me when, midway through, the guy the book had set up as the villain of the piece, Summer's uncle, is really her... DUN DUN DUUUUNNNNNNN secret father. And he isn't so bad. The book just drops his motivation wanting Morty the chimp back. But no wait, the book isn't done.
There's also a DUN DUN DUUUUNNNNNNN secret twin that Summer never knew about thanks to some Parent Trap-like shenanigans. And how Summer didn't even know they were related when she met Holly previously, when apparently there was a whole "second Summer" thing going on when they were kids (so I'm assuming they were identical) just drove me bonkers. Also, all the main core sisters have season names. I know there are only four seasons, but why did Holly get left out? When they were born, allegedly the original decision was to keep the twins together, but baby-Holly wasn't having fake-daddy-Preston, so they separated the twins. Why wasn't Holly called... I dunno... Solstice, or El Verano, or Holyfuckitshotoutside, or something?
But I'm still not done.
In addition to a secret twin the book sets up another potential villain who is also... DUN DUN DUUU... (not that impactful anymore) Summer's secret half-brother, Nash. And if you look up all of these people, even her fake father and secret father, they're all future stars of sequels, so we know none of them are actually bad guys.
Who is the bad guy, you ask? I'd like to know too.
It all just further goes to prove in my mind that the author had no idea where the book was going to go when they started writing and just decided to mash another idea for a book series they had in with this one and call it good. Why have three sequels when you can have a book series of, like, twelve books, all featuring Thornes we either don't know about yet, or were introduced to in this book.
Meanwhile, Summer and Cooper? Yeah, I didn't care. He was awful. It was like if Darren Stevens had shot Samantha, then spent a whole book freaking out about her powers. He broke up with her multiple times and not only did I want her to move away from him and his hot-and-cold attitude, I wanted the book to end there. Or if it didn't, I needed him to grovel. But no, in the end, he gives up and Summer apologizes to Cooper.
I'm splitting the difference at two stars. The first part of the book was problematic but I had fun, but the end was just a meandering mess. I wanted to read Autumn's book up until about 85% through this one, but considering by the end I was fighting just to finish this book, I'm no longer certain that's going to happen.
All that said, the audio reader was solid. I did have trouble understanding her when a character was drunk, or whispering, or whatever, which was a little bit of a pain, but overall I thought she did a great job. I just ended up really not enjoying the book she was reading.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I just wanted the mmc to die a horrible death. A trigger happy sheriff with no functional braincells. If he shot himself, that would at least be satisfying. So no. Just no.
Beautifully written. Great plot and story line. I love the personalities and relationships between the siblings. I can’t wait to see what the next book has in store!
This book and the others I have read in the series are a fun romp. Pure escapism that doesn't require a lot of deep thinking. I was looking for a series like this and it didn't disappoint.
The subject matter was great along with the characters. The story line kept me interested the whole book. The banter with the sisters brought back memories of having them with my sisters.
Book one in the Thorne Witches series packs a lot in. If it wasn’t the mercurial Sheriff Coop’s mood giving me whiplash, it was the new information being unloaded and discovery of family secrets at every turn. It is a lot, but it lays the groundwork for an intriguing series if things settle some.
The romance in this book is extreme hot an cold and reads a bit like someone is driving their story by picking flower petals and saying “he loves her, he loves her not”. By the end, it settled, but I wanted to throttle Coop quite often. And then when Coop would get his head out of his backside, a Summer storm would overtake Summer’s usual warm and sunny personality and I’d shake my head. Going to be quite interesting to see if the other Season Sisters have temperaments that so closely match their names.
Read this book if you enjoy witches, second chance romance, enemies to lovers, entertaining animals, small towns, big and involved families!
