In this collection of dark and twisted short stories, the only thing you can expect is the unexpected. An ambitious trainee lawyer discovers a mysterious door in her firm’s rambling offices. An awkward young man waits for his date in a trendy wine bar, but his evening is about to take a very unexpected turn. An antique typewriter forces its owners to write the same terrifying story over and over again. In these and ten more tales of the paranormal, strange horrors lurk in the corners of our seemingly mundane world – are you ready to discover them?
What a fabulous book to kick off the Halloween season. Weaving individual tales of horror, each story brings the creep-factor in its own unique way. This felt like a grown-up version of the short ghost stories I loved to read as a child. Borrowing elements of modern and mundane, each story feels like something that could happen.. to you. The goosebumps are absolutely worth it.
Fun reading. The style reminded me somewhat of Lovecraft and perhaps the Twilight Zone. The settings were believable and the characters were relatable, and there was always that nice, dark twist at the end.
Having known the author and her brilliant writing style for a while, I had high expectations for this book - and they were surpassed by far!
These 13 stories are written in a way that just draws you in...witty, thrilling, original and reminiscent of classic horror that you hardly find anymore these days. At several points I found myself thinking "wow, I would never have expected that twist!", smiling at a particularly humorous scene or even being like "nooooo you didn't just do that to this poor character!".
There is a TINY bit of gore or gross things but it really is neglectable. You have to know that I am a huge wuss when it comes to content like that and even I could shrug it off so most other people probably won't even mind at all.
Lastly, I also learnt quite a bit of new (to me) British slang reading this :P
If there is anything I could complain about, it is that you get through this book way too quickly and it leaves you wanting more.
