I'm not really sure how to rate this book so I settled for a middle of the road rating because for me the story was split 50/50 between the pros and the cons. And seriously, maybe there's spoilers below but at the same time, it's historical romance so in general, you shouldn't be surprised...

First the pros:
I thought for the most the H was well drawn. Usually rakes, libertines or simply promiscuous men are written as being quite the suave seducer. I felt that he wasn't and I appreciated that. I liked that when he tries to basically reach into her bodice it wasn't easy. Usually, in stories, the H simply pulls down the h's bodice and touches them. In this case, not so smooth. It was awkward and unsuccessful and you know, in honesty, it most often is in real life. So I appreciated that it didn't work out quite smooth for the H. And it was enough to make me slightly embarrassed for him but also thinking yeah, I get it man.

Also, I liked the way the author treated how people snubbed him. He was so isolated from his peers. He wasn't invited to their parties, their homes, and when he bows to them or doffs his hat in respect to those he passes in the street, he is ignored and/or spoken about. I liked that despite that, he continued to show manners and not react in a rude or insulting manner.

I liked that he felt real emotions like when he offers his arm to the h to escort her into the room and he is vividly aware that people are watching. And he starts to feel anxiety and embarrassment that she is going to humiliate him in front of others by refusing. I mean, bravo right? Because ANYONE would feel that and I like that he was made to be this kinda ordinary guy who has made a bit of shamble of his life and is reaping the rewards. And when he starts to pull himself together and starts to feel some self respect and pride in his accomplishments it was such a naked human emotion that yeah, ok. I felt for him.

Now the cons.

Honestly, the h. I am not sure if I can even explain how nonsensical she was. I get that she was young and naive. But it's explained about how she loved him from when she first saw him. That's not love. Not even remotely. And when she sees him in the garden and he approaches her, I'll say right now that it was NOT rape or coercion in any sense of the word. He approached, she responded, she at no time voiced any objection and despite the fact that he was roaring drunk, he was somewhat mindful that she wasn't resisting, etc. He was following her cues in short. I almost wanted laugh after what must have been a 2 minute quickie when she is shocked that he is going just walk away. That he didn't declare himself or "do the right thing." WTF?

And because of that she is going to plot her revenge. And what's more she still loves and wants him and I laughed because all I could think was that was the most uninspired 2 minute quickie with a drunk stranger (because let's face it that was who they were to each other) especially for a first time that I can't imagine anyone would long for that again. She's no different than any other girl who lost her virginity to a jerk (though in all honesty, he was not hiding who or what he was which in my book is at least a point in his favor...most jerks hide that they're jerks until it's too late for you to find out).

Finally, after that he dreams of finding that "golden goddess" that he met in that garden and remembered her from the scent of her perfume. Bwa ha ha haaa! You mean to tell me, that this guy who beds anything with a skirt and has done so for years, is finally brought to heel by memories of some "goddess." The same goddess that he saw earlier that evening and thought her the most insipid girl ever. Do you know why? Because she was an insipid girl and there was no reason for him to notice her. But it's amazing how many, MANY glasses of alcohol later people start to look pretty good. And suddenly this insipid girl see while sober becomes a golden goddess when completely foxed. And he can't stop thinking of her after basically a quickie with a virgin who just lay there. Bwa ha ha haaa! Seriously, I can't stop smirking each time I think of it. Though I will insert a SMALL pro here in that he made it a habit to smell his current flavor of the minute to see if he could find that woman again (and I'd like to point out that all he could remember of the encounter was the smell of her perfume!). Anyway, the pro is that even after he was established with the h, he had found himself sniffing the neck of another woman on instinct. I don't know why but I thought that was a nice touch because people don't change their habits overnight.

Oh, last con is that he was clearly an alcoholic. Alcoholics can't moderate their drinking. And withdrawals are beastly. If anyone has ever been around an alcoholic, it's freakin' draining. The mood changes, etc. I was surprised that knowing he was an alcholic (a not recovered alcoholic as far as I could tell) that she would still proceed with the relationship because seriously. Alcoholics have to be truly committed to detox and abstinence to succeed. End of sermon.

The title alone made me want to read this book but it was so much more that pulled me in once I read the first page! Jaded from the loss of the woman he had loved, by lies that tore them apart, Lord Michael Alder, a viscount and heir, was on a path of personal destruction and debauchery.
Ada was at the end of her second season, but could not become interested in anyone. She compared them all to Alder, a viscount she had seen two years ago and they were all lacking. Was he just a dream that had gotten blown up to the point he was not real? Or just an obsession?
When she finally does see him at a ball, everything changes. She had made "A terrible misjudgment of character" after their fated encounter in the gardens.
Now three years later as Ada has become an independent woman (I failed to mention she was exceptionally smart when it came to the stock market!) and with the support of her parents she purchases her own home in London. Yes she was on a mission to ruin Alder, now deemed "Lord Vile" as he was nicknamed due to all the scandal he caused.
Sydney Jane Baily has become one of my favorite authors. Her writing style just flows from one page to the next and keeps me gripped in her wonderful prose. I also have learned many new words and phrases I had never heard before like "ran-tan, arfarfanart and my favorite half seas over"! This story really pulled at my heart and I can highly recommend you read this one and all of the books in this series. I cannot wait for more!!

Such a really enjoyable book,
Your going to Love It!
Michael Alder is Lord Vile , named for his penchant for strong spirit , gambling, and debauchery , rumours are flying that he takes what is not his right, the innocence of young debutants .
Michael knows he has a bad name and doesn’t care , what he does care about is his siblings , and and Angel he met one night in a gazebo , he remembers a wonderful evening, blonde hair and her unique perfume.
He’s inhaled the fragrance of every woman’s he’s met looking for her, only to be disappointed.
Ada Katherine, is the woman he’s searching for , but she’s not about to let him know that , she’s on a mission to break him , his pocket and his heart , she wants it all .
Ada remembers the night only too well , and it’s nothing to his memory, she remembers pain and humiliation, and the shock of Finding herself ruined.
But who’s right , and can they ever find the middle road or a way to stop her destructive vengeance.
I adored this book , so intricate and intriguing. Twists to rival a helter-skelter.
I must admit to finding myself through most of the book in the very surprising situation of feeling sorry for Michael and feeling Ada was to hard on him .
I was shocked at myself.
By the end of the book I had worked it out and can only say it’s a brilliant story and I can wait to read more .
I received an advance copy of this book and chose to submit a review

Lord Vile
Book 3 in the Beastly Lords Series
By Sydney Jane Baily

Viscount Michael Alder never really meant to earn the nickname Lord Vile, yet after what he considers the nastiest betrayal ever he does just that. He combines bitter resentment with alcohol and adds females to the mix. Before this he had always behaved himself, enjoyed the London social Season, and even fell in love. The in one fleeting moment treachery shatters his gentlemanly character. Well if that's what the ton thinks so be it he thought and unleased Lord Vile.

Lady Ada Kathryn has always worshipped Lord Alder from afar so when she meets him in a darkened garden she is secretly thrilled. Then a only a few scant minutes later, her innocence in tatters, she waits for Lord Alder to do the honorable thing. He doesn't and a few minutes later watches him stumble away.

Now years later her anger still burns bright and she is more then ready to have her revenge, but will she be able to have it? Or will love win out in the end?

Sydney Jane Baily is a absolutely brilliant. I was totally amazed how much chemistry Ms. Baily's main characters had. I didn't think it could get better then the last book, but I was wrong. From the moment I opened this book until the moment it was done I was spellbound.

I had a lot of problems with this story. I'm sorry Michael Alder is a whiny twit and really had no reason to be a complete disaster. What happened to him was not an excuse for his behavior. I would have liked Ada better if she had just moved on and found someone else. I guess this book was too silly and absurd for me. I loved the first book in this series, but it's going down hill fast.

While I had a few minor issues with the plot and pacing of the first two books in this series, I thought this one had no such problems. I switched my allegiance from the heroine to the hero, then back to the heroine, then back to the hero, then…in other words, I was totally engrossed and invested in the outcome of the romance. And isn’t that the main reason I read romance novels?

Viscount Micheal Alder has been drowning himself in drink and whoring his way through life. All of this because his parents betrayed him and cost him the woman he wanted. He doesn't care what anyone thinks of him.
Miss Ada Ellis is completely overwhelmed when she at last meets the man she has admired from afar. This could prove disastrous for her.
This is a story about vengeance and just how it can hurt more than just the target of it. Our hero is more like a spoiled little boy than a grown up and our heroine is an intelligent woman with a loving family. She also has a bee in her bonnet about something.
A very entertaining book in a very good series.
I loved it.

Questionable, very questionable

This story takes place in 1850 or thereabouts which is the early Victorian era. It was a time when womens’ roles were clearly defined and very limited. Men are still firmly at the helm in government, business, and society. The rules governing behavior for women especially, are strict and a woman’s reputation is easily ruined. When that happens, regardless of the reason, the woman is usually perceived as somehow being mostly or totally at fault even if she had little in the way of personal self-defense.

The books opens with an act that some might describe as rape. It’s not violent, but neither is it completely consensual. Our heroine is, to use the Victorian term, an “innocent” in her second social season. That would put her age-wise somewhere between 18-21. I honestly don’t recall the author telling us her age.

Typical for the time she has not had instruction about sexual relations between men and women. During the act with Michael, she never says no, but neither does she say yes. In fact, several of her actions indicate apprehension and indecision even though she never explicitly says no.

When it’s over she is shocked when he puts his clothes to rights as he prepares to leave her to her own devices in a dark garden at a society ball. In her innocence, she believes they are bound for the alter and is shocked when our “hero” gives her a wink and a nod while telling her “to look for him at future balls” so they can do it again.

Now two things should be noted: one, Ada, our heroine was introduced to Lord Alder when she was 16 whereupon she formed a crush. This ball is her first time seeing him since then and her crush is still very much in place. Two, Michael, Lord Alder is drunk. I don’t know the author’s intent but for me, this in no way alters his responsibility given the harsher consequences for Ada than for him. Had Ada raised an alarm when he made his move in the garden her reputation would have been ruined. For Michael, there would have been little/no consequences.

To be sure, the author reinforces the idea that because of her crush Ada didn’t protest. She also is careful to point out that despite Michael’s reputation for debauchery, he’s never forced any woman to have sex with him. That said, had his actions toward Ada been known, it would have been Ada paying the societal price, not Michael.

Beyond that, Michael’s reasons for his behavior don’t match the nature and depth of his misconduct. He is labeled Lord Vile after all, a despoiler of young debutants which he admits to, thought perhaps not in the quantity of which he is accused. Equally, Ada’s plan for revenge while clever dissolves when she finds herself falling in love with Michael which she does fairly quickly.

Bottom line, this book left me aggravated and annoyed. Given the inequities of the period, I couldn’t help but feel that Michael was absolved a bit too quickly. This is not one I’d recommend.

Is revenge always as expected?

Lord Michael Adler is just that, vile. He begins this story as an unhappy, selfish drunk who cares about nothing but booze, and well, satisfying his lusts. As he continues these behaviors he gains a terrible reputation for his behaviors, and the nickname “Lord Vile”.
Lady Ada Kathryn Ellis is in her second season and compares each man she meets to the crush she had two years or more prior from before she was out in society, Michael Adler. Ada goes to a ball and runs into him there. Ada is young, bright eyed and naive, and does not know of his reputation. It does not go as she has fantasized all of these past years, as young girls often do.
A few years later, Ada, due to her own talents and the support of her loving family, she has a home of her own in London, and a two year old son. She is living as a “widow”. But she still harbors a great anger about that meeting long ago with Lord Vile, and she has an elaborate plan to exact her pound of flesh. But, will it produce that results she has imagined in her head the last three years?
This is the third book in this series and I really enjoyed it. The characters are complex and interesting as is the situation each finds themself in within the plot. It is not the usual “trope” and it held an emotional depth that made it all the more appealing. I am looking forward to the next book in this series as well.

Third book in the Beastly Lords series. Before being betrayed by his own family, Lord Michael Alder had always behaved himself, enjoyed the London social Season, and even became engaged in his quiet, unassuming way. But his family's treachery shatters his gentlemanly character. So, he may as well shed his boring veneer of decency and decorum. Soon enough, he acquires the label of "Lord Vile".

Innocently worshiping him from afar, Ada Kathryn is thrilled to encounter the handsome viscount in a darkened garden. Minutes later, with her innocence in tatters, she flees, for the noble Lord Alder has no intentions of doing the honorable thing. He sees her as a willing participant in a delightful and pleasurable dalliance.

When a desirable new lady arrives in London, beautiful, polished and without a hint of vengeance, the notorious Lord Vile's is smittened. If Lord Alder thought he understood betrayal and heartache, he hasn't seen anything yet, because hell has no fury like a woman scorned.

So far, I think this is the best of the first three books because of the plot. Loved the character of Ada and the way she went from warm, to hot, then to cold, continually baffling Alder but pulling him in more and more. This was a very interesting story and I really enjoyed it. Three more books in the series to go, and I wonder if they will be able to top this book in enjoyment and interest.

Michael, Lord Alder, was indeed a vile despoiler of virgins. One of these, our heroine Ada, is determined to seek revenge. Meanwhile, since that fateful night, Ada has become both a mother and an expert investor. Ada's father is a member of the London Stock Exchange and has helped her make her own fortune. She moves to London into the neighborhood where she will likely encounter Michael. Her plan is to get him to love her and then crush him while bankrupting his family.
Of course, she learns the other side of the story and theirs is a romance to enjoy.
Only question I have is how does no one recognize Harry as Michael's son when he bears such a family resemblance to other members of the Alder family? And that cover model does not do the character justice. The model has blue eyes when the book describes the distinctive amber eyes of Michael, son Harry and brother Gabriel. There is even a portrait in the Adler family gallery that little Harry strongly resembles. We have met both these main characters before in the Blackwood sisters' stories. I like that Baily continues character development over several novels. It makes the reader more a part of the family history of all of them and eager for more.

I'm kinda reading--or rather listening to--this series in reverse (only the first three audiobooks are on Hoopla, but it looks like there are six books in the series), and Tim Campbell really takes the book to a higher level. I never quite caught the age of Michael Alder (maybe mid to late 20s), and I'm assuming Ada is no more than early 20s? I guess I'm trying to plausibly excuse Michael's drinking/philandering, as, yes, someone who hasn't grown up. Developing a drinking problem in relation to a broken heart and your jerk parents may be immature, but totally understandable when you're trying to cope. Doesn't justify it, and doesn't justify what amounts to Ada's sexual assault her second season as a debutante (then again, I've read crazier revenge plots, such as Joanna Shupe's "The Courtesan Duchess"--UGH). The final moments had me tearing up a little , but then again, it might be because the big moment happened late at night when I should've been sleeping. I will listen and read other books in the series.

A LOT OF HATE IS AKIN TO LOVE & CHANGES!

4 STARS for S.J. Bailey's Book 3 in her Beastly Lord series which is well written and entertaining. Extensive heavy drinking to beyond the point of sobriety and bad judgments, sexual advances, and memories will affect one sometimes for years, into the future. Romantic Historical Regency Novel with a Lady who is interested in stocks, yet can't buy them on her own, and she wants revenge using them! Great portrayal of an alcoholic always needing a drink to do anything: 1 to ride in carriage, 1 to eat, 1 to get off horses, and so on! Just if you do something drink 1, decide on something, drink 1, (not counting the drinks you sip on it drink while planning/or the doing of something) get ready to go, drink 1, go drink 1, get there, drink 1, leave, drink 1, & so on... It might seem tedious but drinking and drinkers are tedious and the more people know this the better. Plus, health problems, far flushed face and gout, eewww. A terrific read, great love story.

What an adventure Sydney Jane Baily has written for us to enjoy and allowed us to witness an adventure that is not the normal in historical romance settings. Ada Kathryn is a young beauty, the daughter of a Baron, enjoying an evening worshiping Lord Michael Adler from afar at a party. Until a chance meeting in the dark garden, where he shatters her innocence; not even realizing what he has done calling her by another women’s name. He was behaving as the beastly Lord Vile, deep in his own thoughts not caring whom he hurt. Returning to London a few years later, as a widow, Mrs. St. Ange with her son Harry, take up residence in a large home with vengeance on her mind. How to make Lord Vile pay for the mistake and dishonor he caused her without even realizing what he has done to her being used and cast aside as if she had no worth. What an interesting adventure that makes you keep turning the pages until she has finally found her revenge. Or has she?

This story had so much promise. Hero is a rake and a drunk. He violates the h Ada not called rape because the h is in love with him so goes along with it!). She gets pregnant and delivers her baby in the country with the support of her rich and understanding parents. Plots revenge and comes back to London . Only she doesn’t follow her own rules as he seems s”to change his behaviour. While the hero did redeem himself does a leopard really change its spots? We are expected to believe he was in love with Jenny for 4 years and since his parents broke his engagement to her, he become a vile seducer of women! Even innocents. Just kill me. I liked the h and she does stand upto him somewhat, but the. Starts defending him and forgiving him very easily. So meh

Viscount Michael Alder aka Lord Vile has earned his nickname after being betrayed by his betrothed and he becomes bitter and urns to drink, women and even rumored of ruining innocents. Ada Kathryn Ellis has had a crush on Lord Alder, even though they have never been formally introduced - that was until he approached her in the garden at a ball and he was totally foxed and proceeds to ruin her for life. Ada found out first hand what kind of man Viscount Alder really was; 3 years later, she and her son are back in London and she has plans for revenge.

I highly recommend this book and the whole series - that characters wonderful and the story really draws you in to their daily lives.

Michael Alder has not been a stellar member of polite society-or any manner of society since his broken engagement to Jenny. After a slight indiscretion with Miss Ada Ellis, of which he was too drunk to properly remember, his fate is set. Ada is set for revenge on Lord Vile and manages to peak his curiosity and his interest in her. This is a very well written story of redemption. I was not prepared to like the Hero in this story. His past actions were so “Vile”. By the end of the story, he may now be my favorite character in this series.

I really enjoyed this story which is the third in the Beastly Lords Collection!

I enjoyed the way that the book was written and how well the books intertwined with each other to enable the saga to continue and for the characters to develop. I thought that it was a real page turner and I was hooked by the plot line. I thought that the story was tastefully done and the story plots were really pleasing!

It is 5 stars from me for this series, I thoroughly enjoyed them all - very highly recommended!!

Good but long drawn out

I liked the beginning and loved the ending but found the journey between tedious and long. The story could have been cut in half and made a much better tale. I know the author was attempting to drive home how mistaken Ada was in her plot for vengeance against a man who was essentially a good-hearted fellow but it could have been achieved with a few less chapters. The ending made up for it in the end. I liked all the main characters and love revisiting old friends. Looking forward to reading the next one.

I really enjoyed Michael and Ada Kathryn's story. It really took betrayal to a whole other level. The wickedness of the ton strikes again. A lot of things need to be repaired in Lord Alder's life, but now he will need to make amends as well. Betrayal, lies, infatuation, live and forgiveness make for an enjoyable read. This is the third book in the Beastly Lord's series. I need to read the other two because now I am pleasently intrigued.

Great new author and series.

I have read all three Beastly Lords books and have lived each one of them engaging characters, wonderful plot lines, reminds me of Jo Beverly. I like that in this book our lovers do not start off in a good place at all but they do find their way into each other's arms in the end. One of my favorite scenes is the dinner scene followed by the putting to the Serpentine. I highly recommend this series!!!!

Didn’t enjoy this story particularly (except for the last third). I found Ada at first naive and then so coldly calculating that she was off-putting. I also felt it was shame that Harry was to be given his name as the gossips will have a field day. Poor Harry will spend his schooldays and adulthood explaining that though he bears Michael’s surname he is not his heir - seems rather cruel to do this to him.
Read as the third book in the 1in3 collection and review copied/pasted.
