My Beautiful Monsters #3

The Call of Monsters

Rate this book

People might used to have worshipped the Olympians, but I never did. I’ll kill every last one of them to get Hephaestus back.

I used to love my Greek mythology classes until I got kidnapped and actually met some Gods. I took Hephaestus as a lover and Hades and Persephone are not all that bad, but the rest of them?

They hurt my monsters. Zeus kidnapped Hephaestus and is doing who knows what to him for making a knife when it was me that used it to kill Demeter. The Olympians took Hephaestus because they can’t even entertain the notion that a lowly half demon killed one of them.

I know why no one said anything when Zeus came to the Underworld. I know there’s a plan to get Hephaestus back. There’s also a lot I don’t know that I need to learn fast. I have this mysterious demonic form from my father that I need to learn to access. Hephaestus made all these weapons capable of taking down Olympians if they came, but I don’t know how to use them. I’m not going to get lucky again like I did with Demeter.

I have to learn all this and I have to learn it in a hurry because I know between Hades and my father, if I don’t, I’ll be grounded in my room when everyone tries to rescue my God. And I’ve got a personal beef with his father for all the hurt he did towards Hephaestus.

Eh, not my favorite in the trilogy. I just felt kind of bored with everything that was happening and nothing was really holding my interest anymore. Don't get me wrong, it did start off with a bang due to the cliffhanger in the second book but then it definitely fizzled out for me way before I reached tha halfway mark of this book.

If you read the books, well, then you get to know that River is her own monster (in a way). She can transform into one basically and I thought more of that was actually going to happen in this one. Or something entertaining like that. Nothing did and even though she was a demon throughout all the books.. she just kind of felt normal in this one.

Yeah, the romance is still there but I wasn't really interested in that either. Then there's more Olympians.. and you'd think I get more sass and action or something. Nope, that all fell pretty flat for me as well. All in all, it had potential to really going out with a bang but ended up being a dud for me.

SO I'm a bit conflicted about the end of this book. Personally there are a few lingering issues that I really wish would have been addressed such as the monsters going to save their monster friends from Tartarus. The same monster friends they were forced to fight and kill. It's mentioned so much in book one I thought surely this book would cover it, but nope, they are not mentioned once in this book. Also I see why so many people dislike the series or find it lacking. For me it worked because it was so short and there's only so much you can expect from short books in a trilogy. Together the books only total 650 pages which in the big picture sense is not a lot-especially considering the heroine has five mates. I did see feel a sense of disconnect and expectation that we as readers are just supposed to adapt to and I kind of hated that because I felt like I was missing out. For instance during sex the heroine acts like she's been with her mates for years and they know each other so well when that is so not the case. I could argue this book took the instalove route and everything was sped up, but as for their relationship we're basically with them all the way and I hate this forced feeling of familiarity that just doesn't wring true. On that note, I really did enjoy this series. I took everything with a grain of salt, not expecting an extremely in depth read and I think looking at it that way and less nitpicky really helped me enjoy it more. Like that last book the climax (AKA showdown) was kind of lackluster. I kept expecting some big drama or backstabbling to occur and it never did. Everything just worked out too nicely and I'm not sure how I feel about it. While I really did enjoy this series and watching the heroine come into her own this series would be a million times better if it was fleshed out more.

Well, that fizzled a bit.

Started off really well. I was enjoying what was happening, and then it just kind of went meh. I was expecting River to transform into the cover image that has been constant for this trilogy, and did she? No. She didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, her demon self was unique and I liked it, but it wasn’t what I’d been looking forward to for months.

As for the story, it just didn’t have the oomph that I was hoping for and after the final battle we ended up with more of the ‘and this is what happened’ to the characters and the Olympians. It was not the ending I envisaged, but I should have expected it after reading the Scorchwood trilogy.

Boring. DNF 27%. And the cover doesn't have to do anything with the Heroine at all. So confusing and misleading.

The My Beautiful Monsters series ends with a spectacular bang. In the previous books, bisexual pet whispering veterinarian River has been taken to the underworld, communicated with 'monsters,' learned that her father was a Duke of Hell and killed a Greek goddess, all while falling in love with multiple partners and helping to save them from said goddess's evil schemes. But to get new love Hephaestus back from his torture at the hands of Zeus, River and her Monsters must do the unthinkable -- bring down the Olympic pantheon.

With each book, the series gets better and better. The characters have great chemistry with each other and the sex scenes are hot. Plus, despite the extensive cast of characters, all of the MCs get time devoted to their character development. The action is even well written. All in all, this is a great conclusion to a fun series.

PLOT TWIST

~My Thoughts~
I didn't see that coming but every book is a different adventure from this author.
~Story~
It's not difficult to describe the story but it is intense because throughout the books you find how the heroine admires Hades for his love of Persephone. Not only does she admires his love but she also isn't willing to give up on her love for Hephaestus. I did enjoy how the storyline continued and developed.

Great polyamory

I loved this poly group. River is so open and nonjudgemental. Even with Hera she was willing to listen and give her a shot. I loved the HEA and I am interested in the spin off with the kitsune demon. My only issue was how there were some moments where the reading flow was a little off but I enjoyed this overall.

Absolutely Amazing

I’m really gonna miss this world. I loved the Greek Mythology aspect. To get to see Hades, Athena, Poseidon, and Zeus as the author wrote them is amazing. It’s actually like each of the are opposites. Hades was relatively nice and caring while the other 3 weren’t. I’ve never imagined how the Gods would act if they were opposites.
River. She goes from being a normal human to being a royal hellspawn. And she takes it all in stride. I love how nothing really fazes her. If anyone else was kidnapped by Hades and brought the the Underworld, I would think they would be freaking out. It’s one of the many things I loved about her.
The monsters each have a place in my heart. I loved reading the bickering that went on between Demos and Pavlina. It always surprised me how well they feed off each other even though they bicker.
This series took me on an amazing ride of adventure, danger, and love. I absolutely loved it!!

Rushing River

River has gone from being a human, working as a veterinarian, who thought the strangest thing about her was talking to animals. Since then she's been kidnapped by Hades, waged a war in the underworld, discovered she's half demon, fallen in love with 4 monsters and a god who got kidnapped himself. Now she's got to figure out how to get him back from Olympus. She's got other gods and goddesses on her side, some witches, a couple demons and her monsters. They're looking forward to finding the gods that cursed them as much as the rescue. But things don't always go as planned. And some who were thought of as enemies are turning into fast friends.

Spoilers ahead.
Ok, this was a fun wrap up. The plot isn't much sturdier than it had been. But, as always, humor and mayhem carry the story on. All the crossovers were mentioned, the lead in for the kitsune series was imparted, and everything wrapped up neatly. These are amusing quick stories. And the editing was far better than previous books. Even though this one felt rushed, it feels like the author is hitting their stride. We saw Hell, learned the culture, and many new people. We learned a lot secondhand about the fae. Even if it was contradictory and didn't make much sense. We learned more about Olympus than the Underworld, even though less than half of this book occured there. Sure, Olympians are in the Underworld, but so are many monsters. We got a brief glimpse of them in book 1. Once the focus was on her 4, the others were dropped. This entire world and we learned very little. How did recovery go after the fights stopped? Who took over to lead them back to the way they were? Hades was tied up about Hephaestus. The 4 were caught between River and Persephone guard duty. I just sort of felt that the indignity that drove book 1 disappeared immediately after the Demeter situation was done. But, otherwise, a neat and pat little series with a lot of humor and more than a little cheerful celebration of homicidal tendencies lol.

I was glad I finished this trilogy, I struggled through the last book, I wanted to DNF it so many times.

By this point I don't really like River, she comes across as immature and annoying. At one point she is stood in Olympus mouthing off at the gods because she knows all about them as she took a course on greek mythology. I find it utterly ridiculous.

River's demon half is revealed in this book and unfortunately it looks nothing like the cover artwork. The cover is one of the things that drew me to this series but it seems that the monster on the cover has nothing to do with the story. I assumed it would be River but if that were the case it would be a black cat with bat wings, disappointing demon half in my opinion.

Is Rivers mother dead? She's been 'kidnapped' from Earth for months throughout these books and not once has she passed concern or a thought about going to see her mum (or stepdad) or commented that they will be worried about her, she mentions her vet clinic and her customers but never her family. I find this strange.

Typos throughout the whole trilogy, wrong names used sometimes and sentences don't seem to flow, almost like theres words missing, also unnecessary swearing in random sentences. I don't mind swearing in books at all if its used at the appropriate times but this just seems to having swearing for the sake of it.

Theres some group action in the bedroom in this book, they have threesomes with River and they take in turns until she's been with all 5 of them. Theres conversations going on throughout all of the bedroom activities which really takes away from what's happening, I'm not a fan of talking during the smut, if its good enough there would be no room for chatting.

3 stars which is my natural rating, didn't love it, didn't hate it, glad its over.

I was into the story from the first 2 books in this series so I immediately jumped to the 3rd. Honestly, I think the story could’ve been limited to just 2 books because this one was half full of filler. I was bored and ready for it to be over with.

There was a bunch of meaningless talking between characters, lots of extra thoughts put in and some felt like repeating thoughts with the different character’s POV. I barely know anything about Greek mythology and the different gods and goddesses so adding even more of those names to this story confused the shit out of me.
I mean, in my last review I didn’t know that Hades and Persephone were actually uncle and niece until I looked it up. Sure, I’ve seen the Disney movie Hercules, but even he was mentioned in here like I should’ve known what when down between Hera and Hercules.

It was just too much...

Besides that, the whole MMF scene with Hephaestus fucking Tryphon while he fucked River came out of nowhere. I usually enjoy MM in my RH books but there was not a single indication previous to this part in the book where any of the guys were bisexual. Kinda annoyed me, honestly. I’d rather have 2 of the dudes be together because they feel something for each other also but this was more just a shock factor sort of addition to this book, I feel like.

The epilogue was fine, they lived happily ever after and yada yada. It just felt like a synopsis of what they were up to after a bunch of years and felt like an afterthought.

Idk, this was disappointing to me. 2.5⭐️

Man this series took a STEEP down turn for me with book 3. Book 1 & 2 were amazing. I rated them 5 stars. Great original plot, loved the harem and everyone in it, original ideas, loved the main female. Loved the Greek gods stuff.

And then book 3 was just sooooo boring and sooooo drawn out. There were pages with just huge dialog paragraphs by one person talking about what they were going to do with the Greek gods. And rehashing it with different people. It just went on and on and on and on. I stopped reading at like 40% and then tried to push forward again and stopped at 75% again. At around the 40% mark I started skimming heavily, which I hate to do..and then later I literally just started skipping whole parts until they got done with the battle plot stuff. I was still invested with River and her monsters so I wanted to see how they ended up but holy hell it was seriously painful to get through this book. I read the other books quickly back to back, I was so invested and then this was just a let down.

If the issue was trying to fill a 3rd book I wish the author would have kept the fight stuff simple and done and then thrown in a bunch of sex, I would have much rather read that then read about them talking back and forth for 100+ pages about what they are going to do with Zeus instead of just doing anything.

And I love RH's but I also would have been cool with River just being with Hephaestus. Or just give him to me. So delicious. He outshined everyone else in that harem. Rawr.

Such a fantastic series.
I fucking loved these monsters!
I’m usually not all that interested when there’s another female in the harem but I really enjoyed the way it was done in this series with Pavlina.
The story progressed so smoothly throughout the three installments. The sex was absolutely sexy and passionate and so filthy and filled with so many fun kinks. The characters were diverse and so freaking likable even with their bickering and monstrous appearances.
I mean JB got me to read a book with a giant black widow spider as a main character and actually Like it. That’s just fucking magic right there.
She’s gained a reader for life with this story.
Give me all the half demon badass heroines who can talk to monsters and saves the fucking underworld. I am so fucking down.

Satisfying finale

Yaay all the characters show up, battle happens, chaos settles, love triumphs! There's even the beginning of another series by the author, which really reminds me that I NEED to find the beginning of this multi-series saga. What the hell happened in Hell?!

So, I praised as much as possible without spoilers. Very generalized. Now, nitpicking! Cycling through 3 or 4 POVs for every major decision really bogs down the story. I love the insight this provides, but oh man, it slows everything down to a crawl!

Out of the three, this is the book that fell flat for me. There was so much potential here for an amazing ending, her being half demon with a demon form and powers like her fire and her wings to fly. Taking down Zeus, ares, posideon, and Athena. Sexy time with her monsters and God. All of it just kind of fell flat. I almost would've preferred her God never be taken, and it just ends with her killing demeter. She never flies, just attempts, and I think that could've been a great bonding moment between demos and her. The sexy scenes aren't that sexy other than tentacles being involved, no more spider webs and setting rooms on fire or Kraken pool sex. The build-up to make it seem like she was gonna be this badass take no shit female lead left me feeling more like she was weak with a smart-ass mouth and nothing to back it up. She wasn't cunning like in the other books when she got demos out to scout for persephone, or tricked demeter into taking her to see her God ( if I try to spell his name I'm gonna butcher it), she didn't get fiesty and set hades pants on fire or stand up to him or even get mad at him really when she was kept in the dark with no information. Let me tell you if the roles were reversed and it was my lover that got taken by his abusive father because he made a God killing weapon that I used to kill a God and no one told me the plan and it just came out of left field I would've have made all kinds of hell hades had money burn his damn castle down make him regret not telling you or even having the decency to involve you when it came to what the plan was 🙄. Pissed me off. Then, when it came to killing these gods, the talk of how to kill them was way more interesting than the actual kill. posideon's death was alright because he was scared and negotiating. Pavlina did ok too. I liked that she took the head for the gorgon sisters. Zeus, I understood why it had to be quick he was dumb and smart at the same time, but I still wanted his dick cut off and shoved down his throat for the rapes. Ares I really wanted to see him taken down by river she was just there to be there she didn't do nothing. The sex was mediocre at best this just didn't live up to me expectations

Just when we thought things were over, someone else is kidnapped.

Book two left us with Demeter being defeated and Persephone being returned to her husband, Hades.
River had to make a choice and ended up being the one to kill Demeter with a weapon designed by Hephaestus to destroy a god.
They never intended for these weapons to be used again.
But a certain god took issue with with it and wanted it for himself.
Now the gang has to come together once more to take down those willing to pull Olympus and its occupants further into destruction.

I love how River loves.
She doesn't take kindly to those who hurt those she considers hers.
It doesn't matter if some of that pain was from thousands of years ago.
It doesn't matter that the ones she loves don't see it in the same light.
They hurt those she cares about and now she wants to hurt them.
That is unconditional love.
She doesn't think twice about laying waste to those who wronged them.

We see River trying to learn and master her powers and demonic form in order to be there for her mate.
Though we do see the relationship blossoming even further.
Becoming something that neither River or her harem members thought would be possible.
*Warning: male/male relationship takes place*

This series was a great one and I'm sad to see it end.
However, I think everything was tied up nicely.
We even get a small look into the future of River and her harem.

I will say this because I didn't say it in my previous reviews.
I believe some of the characters we meet in this series, especially book 2 and 3, are from other works by this author.
You don't have to read the other books for this one to make sense, but I do get the feeling that knowing about them would explain a lot of how they are in these books.

I'm definitely going to be checking out other works by this author.
She drew me in with her characters, writing style, plot lines, and just overall awesomeness of this series.
Definitely curious to see what her other works are like.

I was given this ARC for free in exchange for an honest review. As I’ve said before, I always give honest reviews whether people appreciate them or not.

This is the third story in the My Beautiful Monsters Series from author JB Trepagnier. As I have said before, if you haven’t read the first two, Monster Whisperer and Monster Song, read them first!

River, her father, her monsters and the entire Underworld are waiting patiently and not so patiently for Hades to come back from Olympus so they can complete their plan to rescue Hephaestus. Again, go read the first two stories. I have to say that River and company do meet several Olympians and it was awesome. And can I just say that River’s father is the coolest ever?

Ms. Trepagnier has not only given us an exciting book, but another amazing series! I love how she added twists and turns, magic and sexy times! River is a busy girl. She’s a busy, freaky, kinky girl and I love it! While no one in the book yelled “Release the Kraken” I did as I was reading a specific scene. Yes, I’m smirking. While this is the end of the series, Ms. Trepagnier set us up for her next one, Silverhold Detention Center for the Magically Delinquent. The first book, I Regret Nothing, is up for Pre-Order now on Amazon and releases November 27, 2020. I can’t wait!

Borderline 2.7-3 stars: I actually really enjoyed this series, over all. This is THE worst book in the series. The series had a good idea and the potential, the writing was pretty good up until this one. Writer's rush is in full swing and is such an injustice.

Any potential of having depth to the characters and plot is tossed out the window and abandoned as the author desperately tries to jam as many monsters, myths, creatures, gods, demons, realms, theories, and genres with this final installment. I pushed through and finished the series simply to, well, finish.

Dialogue is stupid and unbelievable, ancient demons and gods alike talk like valley girl high schoolers. I'm not saying that they should sound like Shakespeare, but (Dionysus talking) "Hephaestus, I totally understand why you don't want that weapon out in the world, but people are going to find out about it once Olympians die, I know you don't want us to keep one because you wouldn't feel safe. I know you might intend to destroy all of them when this is over, but think about about it from our side". This example, to me, just doesn't feel natural. There are also several different conflicts in this sentence with the rest of the plot and what previous books have mentioned about some things. Inconsistency is one of the worst possible things an author can do.

This was the final book in the My Beautiful Monsters series by J.B. Trepagnier and I have to say that this was so worth the wait. As soon as I was able to read it, it only took me 2 days to read it. I would have read it faster because I really, really wanted to know what was going to happen next but I didn't want to get to the end that quickly.

We finally get the conclusion to the mess that the Olympians started centuries ago. In the last book, Hephaestus was taken by Zeus for making a weapon that could kill an Olympian, leaving a very mad River to plan very creative ways to save him. Let's just say that we suffer along with the characters during the book.

The best part of this book in my opinion was not the ending itself but the character development that happens in the book. The story itself is great but the character development is the cherry on top. You just have to read the book to understand what I mean. Also read my blog post about it for my full thoughts on the book!

A little disappointed

Let me tell you...I was so ready for this book. I loved the first two. Yes they had some repetition in them but there was still a story that moved forward smoothly and had substance. I fell in love with the characters and their bond and I was all about a reverse harem that had a female lover. This book however disappointed me. It started off well enough. But the entire time it felt like it was written by an entirely different author, an angry author to be honest. The story felt like it was at a stand still the entire time and I can't tell you how many times I rolled my eyes or said out loud "I know, I know, you said it a million times already". I felt like the author didn't know how to move this story forward and just filled it with repetitive mush. Then we get to the epilogue and I'm like really, I would have preferred to read about all this happening than "we need to get him back", "gods are rapist", "God are mean" fifty million times.
I really wanted to love this one but just couldn't.

I genuinely enjoyed each of these books. This series was truly interesting. It was such a different and new take on Hell, The Underworld, Olympus, the Greeks, Monsters and everything.

I love how this author really put all these worlds together and how she explained the different realms it was fascinating to read but not soo much information that you became buried in it and confused.

I loved River and her harem: Pavlina, Kimon, Demos, Hephaestus, & Tryphon. The entire thing was very interesting and curious you really never know what’s going to happen with these instead and demons.

All in all this was a good book. I enjoyed it. It felt a bit long winded towards the end with how long it took to overthrow ppl in Olympus whereas the fighting itself was quick asf but I’m still happy with this series and glad I read it.

So to the author job well done. You definitely have an interesting and intriguing imagination bc holy shit. And to another reader I hope you had fun on the adventure this book was just as I did.

Definitely the worst in the series. I have got to say that I prefer the written format more than the audio version. Portia Kay did an amazing job, but she was fighting a loosing battle with so many male voices to interpret. The audiobook would have been much better had Portia shared the narration with a male narrator too.
The good: I loved the idea of this series, the author's take in the Underworld, Hell, Olympus etc, was really interesting and made for a good story; The variety of monsters River had at her disposal was also intriguing and fun; Their banter was hilarious at times. And, I liked that River was quite special too. We got answers and got to see 3 different realms.
The bad: The spice was good, but it could have been better. They could have done it in monster form and be a bit more creative with the group scenes too; I couldn't get over how unappalling some of the voices were, we needed a male narrator here as well. Book 3 was a little too long and boring at times.

The intrigue continues. How will it all end? Zeus has taken a lover and could create a war with the Underworld. What about Hell? The Olympians? Will the Monsters get revenge? I do not like term monster because they are not monsters but beings with feeling, wants and needs like all of us.

Remember that in this series, each book starts where the previous left off. I am personally grateful the little 'last time' reminder at the beginning. it helps me to jump in and get right back into storyline fast.

If you have not read this series from the beginning or even the Scorhwood Series , I highly recommend doing so. Will make the stories have mire sense. Even better yet, you will enjoy them also

Boo boo! End of this series! I want more of the loveable monsters! Only hope is the end of the book.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.

Fun series with a little bit of cross over.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

Lost interest

It took me a while to finish this book🙄
I'm definitely convinced that the author should have been write one or two books and make everything end with the death of Demeter and not continuing with a weak plot twist. I lost any interest for the story and especially all the part in Olympus...boring
It was really painful reading this book as things make less and less sense and I lost any connection with the characters. The way River changed from book one to book three is so weird. Of course the FMC has to evolve and grow up but here she lost her personality and became totally someone else.
Well, it's a bit sad because the way the author combined mythology, demons, fae, and Underworld was very interesting at the beginning but then it was farfetched and not so captivating.

I honestly loved this series. I hate that it’s ending but I’m so glad to finally have the ending! No more suspense in what is going to happen next. Phew. Maybe now I can get a good nights rest..at least until her next series.

I love this author. Her mind comes up with come absolutely amazing reads. She writes in a way that’s beautiful and makes her ideas less crazy! I enjoy her books.

I absolutely loved the characters and their growth throughout the book. One of the best parts was watching them grow and change into who they are meant to be. Absolutely beautiful. I love that we finally get the answers we’ve been waiting for. This is a great conclusion to the series.

I definitely recommend this series!! Bravo.

River's monster comes out. It is interesting, just put it this was one of her boyfriend's nickname for her suits. All her partners wants intimate time with her monster.
But first they have to come with a plan to get Hephaetus away fro Zeus. Also, deal with Zeus and the other gods.
Love what Hephaetus dies while locked up and in Zeus's house.
River trains hard to fight.
The fight was epic.
Zeus was so dumb. LOL
They so rock but a couple got seriously harmed.
What happens when dust settles.
So, happy for Hephaetus he got a better family.
LOVED the ending.
Want to read more books like this and the Kitsune story.

River & her monsters are back for the final battle with the Olympians. River finally gets her monster & even tho it's pretty cool you kind of expected it to look like the cover model for the series, and it's nowhere even close. There's all the hype leading up to the fight with Zeus, and the revenge against Poseidon & Athena, but the actual "fight" is so anti-climactic that you ask yourself "Really?! That's it? It takes place in less than 2 pages. Wow! Let down." So not what I have come to expect and love. After the fight, I didn't get the closure that I normally like to see. JB just tells you what happens to our characters. I enjoyed this series, but this last book was not up to what I expect from one of JB's books.
