Rexan (Rex)
Senior year was supposed to be about me forgetting about being in love with my straight best friend and finding a boyfriend.
It was not supposed to include my straight best friend having enough of hooking up with girls at his parents request and asking me to be his fake-boyfriend.
I should have said no when Tobias asked me for this favour. I should have turned him down and focused on myself.
But what is a guy supposed to do when the person you’ve been in love with for six years wants to play boyfriends that includes kissing and putting a show on for the whole school.
My weak, vulnerable, little heart was not about to give up that opportunity.
I’m an opportunist, a receiver, someone who takes what’s given to him - which is good considering I’m the school’s wide receiver - and I was about to take up this gift from the gay gods with open arms.
The only problem I have thought is how do you tell your fake-boyfriend and straight best friend that you’ve always been in love with him?
It’s alright, I’m asking for a friend.... I wish.

Tobias
It’s completely normal to swear off girls for your senior year and ask your gay best friend to be your fake-boyfriend.... right?
Senior year was supposed to consist of two simple things.
One: Focussing on science and getting into a good college to annoy my parents.
Two: Having fun and letting my hair down without being tied down to someone.
Senior year was not supposed to consist of me, Red Valley’s star quarterback, science genius and all around ladies man getting the hots for my gay best friend.... considering I’m supposed to be straight.
How do you tell your best friend who’s agreed to be your fake-boyfriend that you might not actually be as straight as he once thought and that you’re feeling things you’ve spent so long suppressing?

2.5 and maybe a 3 because I like this trope

Rate: 2.5/3 out of 5 *This review contains spoilers*

While reading these were a few things I took note of:

From the very beginning I could tell that Rex analyzes Tobias as he’s been watching him all his life. Knowing that he has a bit of a fragile masculinity and didn’t want to threaten or make him feel uncomfortable shows home much he cared for him before he even agreed to be in a relationship. It’s the small things like that that show how much he loves Tobias.

I laugh at how much Tobias feels the need to reassure himself in his mind. It makes me laugh because even though he says he’s comfortable to himself about admitting Rex is attractive, it sounds like he is trying to convince himself. This conveys that he isn’t actually comfortable with that idea yet and is why while everyone thought that he and Rex were going to end up together he was the only one left in the dark as to why they thought that.
He even talks about him liking the green eyes and blonde hair combination even though his mind blocked out that he probably is attracted to that because of Rex. It was like as soon as Rex said ‘okay’ to bring his fake boyfriend it gave him permission to ogle at him and notice how he looks.

Final thoughts:
This book was all over the place by the end and when I mean end I mean the last 5 percent before the epilogue. There are a few things I think need to be worked on.
1. This author often tells and doesn’t show as much. I feel like they are wasting words with what was already shown.
2. I know that every character has their story. Mateo and Dante are surely going to be left for a second book but what kind of friends are Rex and Tobias if they won’t even listen to their friends talk. It seems like only Rex and Tobias had anything to say.
3. How did Rex’s parents learn about their fake relationship if they were literally barely in the house. If it was the time when Tobias was tutoring Rex then why did they wait until the end.. aka after the coming out party? It feels like them finding out with an afterthought.
4. The grammatical errors are... very present is all I’m going to say.
5. Jelena is a character that rarely appeared but suddenly has a picture of Dante and Tobias kissing in the locker room? What was she even doing there? She never shows up until the author needs a scapegoat
6. That kiss between Tobias and Dante for sure only made Rex more insecure and we didn’t even unpack it because it was at the end of the book
7. The epilogue made no sense. How is it that Tobias takes Dante on a date and they still didn’t establish their REAL relationship together? They’ve been in school for the last year and I just don’t see their relationship lasting longer.

The things the author should have been focusing on, they didn’t. Two different problems were brought up in the end and then the book ends before the epilogue about them talking about going on a date as if that’s going to make it all better. Besides the parents finding out about their arrangement, Rex has been insecure about how he looks and how he doesn’t seem to be enough for Tobias, why didn’t we focus on how that kiss with Dante made him feel? The author should have shown Rex opening up about these insecurities and Tobias assuring him. TOBIAS DOESN’T EVEN SAY SORRY FOR KISSING DANTE aka HURTING REX.

Why does Tobias’s love for science barely get talked about? I only learned for his love of experimentation right before he kissed Dante. Sure, he gets an A in the sciences but that doesn’t SHOW me his love for science. He could have taken Rex to a planetarium for a date to show a little more about himself. Talk about the stars, talk about what he’s passionate about. He’s good at science but does he really like it?

In conclusion, I don’t see how their relationship can last passed high school. I don’t mean just Tobias and Rex I mean the four boys as a friend group. Rex will, at least in my eyes because it was literally never touched upon, always feel insecure when Tobias hangs out with Dante in the future because of that kiss and his physical insecurities about being the least attractive one in the friend group. That will put a divide between Rex and Dante because of how much Rex loves Tobias. Then when it divides those two it will divide the whole group because everyone is going to feel threatened by someone else’s presence. They never actually talk anything out.

I hope Mateo and Dante’s journey will be better, but depending on what I saw in this book their communication skills are almost just as bad as Tobias and Rex. And hopefully Timothy can get someone for him too.

2 stars.

This felt like a bad teenager movie that you know it's bad but you watch anyway because it's entertaining. Well, at least that was the reason I finished. There is more bad than good in here but I enjoyed it in a 'nothing better right now' kind of way. I just can't get over the bad stuff and give a better rating. Sorry.

Told with double POVs this story wasn't well edited nor well written. There were so many, but, oh, so many editing mistakes that I couldn't actually believe this had not one but two BETA readers. Missing letters, wrong words, wrong punctuation... Obvious mistakes. I would have enjoyed this way more if there had been an actual editing.

The plot was all over the place. Tobias seemed to have advanced on his understanding of his sexuality and of his feelings for Rex just to be back where he started in the following chapter. It made me feel like development had been made just to go back time and time again. It also had weird time jumps saying weeks went by but with nothing to show for it. I was so confused at the ending saying "a few months later" but with nothing having really changed.

I liked Rex. He was a good friend and seemed to care about how his actions affected everyone. He didn't push when someone wasn't ready to talk. He was just really nice. Tobias wasn't, though. He only thought about himself, kept a bunch of stuff from Rex but still pushed Rex to talk. His parts of the book were all about himself and Rex's parts were about Tobias too. It was too much Tobias for me.

The relationship was weird. Why do you need to keep telling me they love each other and making big monologues inside their heads about their love? Show me. There was so much "closest friend", "favorite person" but no showing. They didn't talk about anything besides their fake relationship. It felt empty and fake.

I kind of want to know more about Mateo and Dante but I don't think I can take another lost, full of mistakes story. Oh, well. I knew I was taking a chance on this one.

Ok, let's be honest: this is not overly original (and the cover is just terrible), but it works if you like the friends-to-lovers and fake-relationship tropes.

Tobias and Rex are nice MCs, friends since they were born, Tobias is staright while Rex is openly gay. Then, one day, Tobias asks a huge favor of Rex: to feign being a couple so his parents stop trying to make him date rich girls. Rex, secretly in love with his bestie since he discovered what love and sex is, accepts and crosses his fingers for things not to overly complicate (ha!).

I liked how things went between them. It's easy and natural because they are truly close friends, so close no one finds it weird for Tobias to suddently be gay, because they fit and kind of already gave the couple vibe. Their story is low angst, just a story about two friends that, because of the circunstances, start getting even closer than before and Tobias can't help bat acknowledge some things he tried ignoring before (like the fact he only ever dated blonde girls with green eyes... surprise! That description perfectly fits Rex LOL Obvious, right?).

I loved their first kiss, it was so passionate and at the same time it didn't compeltely rushed things between them. Their relationship keeps slowy evolving though that kiss obviously trigger something between them hard to ignore.

There are not many supporting characters. Not important enough to review, at least. We have Tobias mom, a control freak, and also Rex's mom and dad, who were both pretty cool and likeable. The most important supporting characters where Dante and Matias, who will probably be the next MC's as their possible realtionship and obvious feelings for each other where introduced here. It could be interesting, so I will stay tuned for the upcoming books.

Overall, it was a nice read if you are craving something of this trope. I particularly love fake relationships, but many times the plot ends being forced and completelly unrealistic. It didn't feel that way with this book, not for me at last, so that was pretty nice.

Just to end, I can't help but say that this book need a pretty big editing work. I'm not a native speaker and as you probably notice from my reviews, I'm not an english grammar specialist. I pretty much learnt to speak the language by reading and I make many mistakes and don't notice many of them while reading, BUT. Here I did notice. Some mistakes were just impossible to miss. And if I'm noticing that many, I can't imagine what a native will find LOL So yes, editing must be done and really, it's an important thing no one should neglect.

Please get an editor....

On the whole, the book is good, but it is plagued by errors in word choice, spelling, and grammar that would have been greatly helped by an editor, or even a proofreader. Please, please, I beg of you, get a small group of people to read and edit before publishing. Spell check is not enough! So many cases of the wrong word in place, or the wrong verb tense. This could easily have been a four star book if not for the distracting problems while reading.

3/5⭐

Good story

This is a super cute and sweet YA/NA story. As you would expect there is all the yummy angst associated with bi-awakening and fake boyfriends.

I love that Tobias and Rex are both football players and that they have been besties their entire lives. I don’t know, there’s just something about that jock on jock dynamic that’s fun to read.

One thing I will say about this book is that it is in desperate need of a copy editor. There are a lot of mistakes that shouldn’t be there. Overall it’s a light and fun read. 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fake Play: Red Valley High School is a coming of age story about Rex and his best friend Tobias who end up as fake boyfriends and ultimately realize they are in love. The story is really well written and I loved the characters. The book was an easy read with just enough steamy scenes and fluff.

This was good!! A good friend to lover romance. Rex and Tobias are best friends. Rex has been in love with his straight best friend! Tobias asks Rex to pretend to be his boyfriend. They eventually realize they love each other. It was a really sweet coming of age romance. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

Rex has lined in silence for his straight best friend. When Tobias asks to be pretend boyfriends it seemed like it would be tough to have it within reach but not for real. But then it got to be real. And then they got a new beginning. As something real and even more to one another. I liked it.

Empezó bien y luego fue meeeh.
Tobias todo el libro enamorado de su bbf and he was like: I want to kiss him but only like a friend, bitch, wtf???????
Not really a plot, just a friend (Tobias) realizing that he is in love with his bff (Rex) , end of the story.
And what about Dante and Marcus ???? They were just there to help the main characters, his story didn't develop :((((

Good friends to lovers romance. Rex and Tobias have a great friendship and this blossoms into a lovely romance. It is nice to read a M/M romance between two high school students. I really enjoyed the story.

British English in Georgia

This book got confusing because of all the British English. The characters kept talking about the boot of their car or how the group of them were going to "Sat around the bon fire"

me entretuvo bastante.
fue una lectura tierna y fluida, sin mucho drama.

Hubo comunicación en la mayoría de las cosas, haciendo que los problemas o dudas no se extendieran demasiado, me gusto.

There aren't many HS M/M romances on the market, and this one did NOT disappoint!!!

Rex and Tobias are two sinfully gorgeous characters - one straight and one gay. They enter into a 'fake relationship' to take the heat off Tobias being a pawn to his parents by setting him up with yet another socialite. Rex to the rescue, or rather, TObias didnt give him a choice... But while that choice was taken from Rex, he has been secretly crushing on Tobias forever!!

But Tobias starts to become confused... Should he really be noticing his best friend and how hot he looks in his clothes or his touch, and definitely not how soft his lips are and how delicious he tastes!!!
