One bad review. How can one bad review shake Callie Claston's publishers faith in her? Determined to prove to everyone that she can be a successful author, Callie grabs her best friend, Tricia, and heads to Sage Valley Ranch to gain an insiders perspective on ranch life for her next book.

But nothing could prepare Callie for her best friend's scheming ways. How she got herself hooked into doing an article on romancing a cowboy in seven days, she'll never know. But with her career on the line, she'll do whatever it takes to save it.

From the moment Reed Allen laid eyes on Callie, he knew she was trouble with a capital T. He should stay far away from her. But heaven help him, he can't say no to her shadowing him for the week. There's just something about her that draws him in and has his carefully crafted walls around his heart cracking.

The more time they spend together, the more Callie realizes what she's been missing her entire life. Love. There's just something about the way Reed is with his girls that has her wanting to stay right where she is. It's feeling more like home than her actual home does. When she realizes that everything between her and Reed is real, she no longer has it in her to do the article.

But when Reed discovers the truth behind why Callie is really shadowing him, his walls go right back up. He doesn't think he's strong enough to go through another heartbreak. But the heart wants what the heart wants and Reed can't deny his feelings for Callie. Both he and Callie will need to let go of the things holding them back if they're ever going to find their HEA.

*dreamy sigh*

Oh how I adored this book! I found myself laughing out loud, getting a little teary eyed and letting out little dreamy sighs while reading. I really enjoyed getting to know Callie, Ryder, Sam and Becca. Sage Valley Ranch is definitely a fun setting and I found myself wishing I was right there with them!

You guys! If you're looking for a fun new series then I highly recommend trying this one! I can already tell it's going to be amazing! I can't wait for Holden's book! ;)

Ms. Walton's books are always a fun getaway! Her books never fail to put a smile on my face and have me letting out little dreamy sighs. I'm looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us next!

As for my casting... I am loving these two! What do you think?

I am always happy to see a new book by Crystal Walton. This is not only a new book but the beginning of a new series! That is definitely a happy, happy thing.

This book has lots of tender moments but also has many amusing moments as Callie stumbles her way through dude ranch living. I loved that Callie was able to laugh at herself in those embarrassing moments. She owned her bumbles and held her chin up. It made her a fantastic character. Callie is an author and I loved how she described writing as not just a dream but as something that she just had to do. It lived within her.

There was a great build up of chemistry between Reed and Callie. I loved their interactions and their conversations- especially the heart felt, emotional ones. Reed is trying to fight his interest and his attraction to Callie but he sure isn't very good at it! Thank goodness!! haha.

I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to settle in with and over before I knew it. I cannot wait to see what comes next!! I hear the title for the next book is Falling For The Younger Cowboy. Sounds interesting for sure!

This book is only $.99 right now so grab it up! It's also on Kindle Unlimited if you have that. Happy reading!

I hate to say I was surprised with this book, but there it is. In a literary world where cowboy romances are littering Amazon, I kind of got blinded. But, wow. I literally laughed out loud at some parts. Not a grin. Not a giggle. Literal, audible laughing. And there were so many good nuggets of quotable goodness. So if you’re like me and filing this book under “just another cowboy story” the stop! There’s so much more in the pages. You just might be surprised as I was.

This is the first book by Crystal Walton I have read and it’s an excellent read! The story is well-written with quite a bit of humor, the dialogue is fantastic, the plot is intriguing, the characters are totally engaging and lovable, and the faith thread is believable and real. If you enjoy a good contemporary romance with heart-fluttering romance and heart-warming character growth, you will definitely enjoy this book.

Callie, trying to pick up her shattered dream of a career as romance author, ends up at a dude ranch in Texas far from home. Callie is full of spunk, pluck, and gumption and also tender, compassionate, and hopelessly romantic. Reed, the small town vet, is loyal, steadfast, and swoon-worthy though he’s still trying to find peace after his wife’s death. His daughters are adorable as secondary characters in the story and his mother-in-law is quite a presence in the plot line. I’m looking forward to more books in the Sage Valley Ranch series!

I received a copy of the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Completely quotable fun!

I think I highlighted about a quarter of this book. Great quips, words of wisdom, and swoony truth bombs abound in this adorable short novel from Crystal Walton.

Don’t let the title fool you into thinking this is some cliche market romance. It’s not. It’s a humorous romcom between a struggling romance author and a widowed country vet. Second chances, awkward situations, southern charm, and plenty of heartfelt poetic parallels make this an excellent choice for a quick read that covers all the bases.

~4.5 stars~ Crystal Walton has a way of taking well-worn tropes and making them feel fresh and engaging, and that’s exactly what she’s done with this novella. Romance author lacking in “real life” romance experience? Yep, read that a few times lately. Father of two lost his beloved wife too soon and is wary of risking his heart again? Well, let’s just say there’s something about that scenario that really appeals to female romance readers. So in terms of broad story structure, are you going to find anything new here? Probably not, unless you’re really new to the romance genre.

Where Crystal Walton draws me in time and again, though, is the combination of humour and heart in her writing and the characters you can’t help but want to spend time with. Take for example the psychotic rooster Elvis, who’s not exactly sure he wants to welcome Callie onto his turf. Or Callie’s straight-talking friend Tricia, who says it like it is: “You booked this vacation because a reviewer with his tighty-whities in a wad claimed your work lacked authenticity.” I seriously have to remember to use that expression sometime!

And right alongside her fantastic secondary characters are main characters who feel as real as the ground beneath your feet. And yeah, I know a lot of reviewers say that about the characters they love, but these characters really are flesh and blood. I’m not sure there’s any better way to say it. The dialogue is natural and engaging—even better, the humour is natural and engaging, whether it’s situational comedy (hello, Elvis!), snappy one-liners, or anything in between. And the romance has that perfect blend of emotional depth and swoon factor. I’m a fan for life.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.

This sweet read applied humor, healing, and romance to two unsuspecting hearts. Despite its short length, this novella delved into the characters’ past hurts and regrets and still provided an authentic happily ever after (which is what every romance fan is rooting for, right?!) I loved the author’s use of critters with quirky personalities and endearing young girls who love big.

Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy is a quick, snappy, and, yes, predictable (in a good way) romance. Heartbroken, handsome widowed cowboy dad meets single woman whose career is on the skids. Throw in some horses, bonding time with his daughters, and a little chemistry, and you’ve got yourself a sweet, clean romance that’s worth reading.

Crystal Walton’s books are always well-written and edited with likable, relatable characters, making them a pleasure to read.

I loved this story about a romance author (Callie) who has had one bad review and her publisher is ready to give up on her. She takes herself off to a dude ranch to find inspiration to write an article about making a cowboy fall in love with you in 7 days and the tips to do this.

On the Dude Ranch she meets Reed, a Vet and cowboy, who has loved and lost and has two beautiful daughters. He falls for Callie and she for him but she is writing an article about him to move her career forward and he isn't sure if he is ready to move on from painful memories.

I loved that the characters are well written, with depth behind them. This is a clean romance and focuses on the story. There is good humour, there are more characters for the rest of the series. The story is well thought out. It's a happy easy read book.

I really liked that Callie actually has good morals! That's really refreshing, and if you want to get involved with the authors and characters there is a group on Facebook :) :) :)

This was a fun story to read. When I realized the direction this story was going, I nearly quit reading it. I have read this idea in several stories. However I decided to continue reading and am glad I did. I liked seeing Reed face his demons and deal with them. Callie was fun and they made a great couple.

This book was a struggle for me. It's a well-written book with nicely developed characters. It's very funny in places and sad in others. It's a moving story filled with charm. However, the author failed in making the romance believable. Since this a romance novel, I am giving it 3 very generous stars because it didn't accomplish it's goal.

Callie is a sweetheart of a character. She's quirky and caring, she is eager to try things out and learn. I loved her interactions with the animals and with Reed's girls. I liked the friendships she made, she's just a nice girl. I felt bad for her because of her family and frankly because of the way Reed treated her. I felt that she deserved a less broken character, she deserved a man who could give her his whole heart. That man was not Reed.

Reed is a challenging character. I felt his pain for losing his wife, the author wrote it all so movingly. That was my problem with this book. The author focused so much time on showing Reed's pain that 90% into the book he's still grieving. NINETY PERCENT. His pain is raw, it's oozing off the pages. He rubs his empty ring finger, he remembers his wife lovingly, this is not a character who is ready to move on!

Because of the way Reed was still very much in love with Jenny (his deceased wife), I never once bought that he suddenly fell in love with Callie. I felt bad for Callie because I think she will never measure up and will always be a pale comparison to his dead wife.

How was he supposed to reconcile the greatest loss of his life with a second chance Jenny would never get?

Does that sound like a man who is ready to move on? That happened at 87%.

I was expecting a love story, instead I got a grieving widower and a forced flat relationship. Again, I felt bad for Callie.

The epilogue wasn't any better. Oh, yay, they're dating. No declarations of love, no engagement.

BAH!

A Western romance, this story is filled with both comedy and pathos, drawing the reader into the plot even as the book opens with Callie's nemesis, a rooster named Elvis. Callie has arrived at Sage Valley Dude Ranch with a view to gaining an "authentic" experience after being slated by a book critic. Based on one bad review her publisher is threatening to pull her books and Callie is licking her wounds. Even worse, her family consider her dreams of writing as frivolous and are putting pressure on her to return to the family fold to fulfill their aspirations for her. Fortunately, Callie has one good friend that believes in her, hence her visit to the dude ranch. Her first encounter with Reed does not go well, and nor do most of those that follow as Callie suddenly finds herself becoming uncoordinated and klutzy. However, having been given the task of shadowing Reed to understand what a country vet does with his days, Callie is determined to show her mettle. The fact that the vet's green eyes draw her in isn't too bad either. Reed is attracted to Callie, but he has a wealth of unresolved pain and sorrow to deal with. Trying not to deal with the real issues in his life, Reed has done his best to cut off his feelings and emotions, but Callie creeps into his heart and into the hearts of his children. He discovers the truth about Callie in an unexpected way and feelings of betrayal swamp him. It takes the machinations of determined friends to make both Callie and Reed see that love is worth fighting for. This book is part of a series but is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a good ending, whilst opening the way for the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

In Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy, we come across a few interesting characters. We have a woman who’s an author of romance books and yet hasn’t really experienced true romance, and we meet a young dad who is grieving the loss of his wife. Each is trying the best they can to just move on, but fate falls into their paths and things start to get interesting.
This story by Crystal Walton is a bit different from her other books, yet it still holds lots of life lessons for us.
We feel the loneliness and low self-esteem on Callie’s part, never feeling like she is good enough. She struggles with believing in herself and her skills.
Then we have Reed, who is struggling with a loss so deep, he just wants to push it away. He comes to realize, he has lost himself along the way. He’s crushed any life he and his girls could have because of his fears. It takes a crazy chicken, a pregnant horse, and a couple of caring friends to help them each see what they are missing.

This book brought out ALL the emotions! I laughed so much at the predicaments Callie found herself in. Growing up on the farm myself, I could clearly envision any one of them happening! That poor city girl didn’t stand a chance against Elvis the rooster LOL!
My heart broke for Reed with the crippling loss in his past, and for Callie never knowing what unconditional love was. Two souls like theirs were meant to be together especially since they understand the pain the other went through and how it shaped them into what they are today.
Crystal Walton did an amazing job keeping this story raw and real while intertwining humor and fun and family into it. My favorite quote from the book was, “Love isn’t meant to be reserved. It’s meant to forgive, to heal, and if you let it, to help you find the courage to begin again.” Well written, Crystal, well written!
I received an advance copy of this book from the author, but all opinions in this review are my own.

Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy- by Crystal Walton
This book was such a delight to read. I have read many of Crystal Walton’s book and I have enjoyed them all, but I think this one is my favorite. The author’s use of language was so clever and entertaining. I found myself reread lines just to savor them again and again. I also found myself reading expectantly for the next witty lines. A sweet story with great characters and storyline.
Here are a few examples:
Callie would’ve rolled her eyes if they weren’t fastened on the two cowboys walking out of the stable like two perfectly characterized heroes already penning themselves onto the unwritten pages of her head.
“Ooh.” Her impish grin added yet anther mark to the number of times Callie wished she could’ve hit the backspace button during the entire conversation.
And my favorite “Maybe you’re hard to say goodbye to.”

I received an advanced copy from the author. I voluntarily gave this honest review.

A book about a romance author, cowboys, and Texas sounds like the perfect book to me. Add in great characters, fun banter, heartache, and dancing at the Two Step and I fell in love with Sage Valley, Texas.
The incident where Callie and Reed first meet with the help of Elvis the rooster is hilarious and so are the antics Reed uses to get Callie to not want to shadow his job anymore. Both Callie and Reed need to move forward but they will both need to open their hearts and not hold back.
I am glad there are four more books in this new series by five different authors. This is the first book I have read by Crystal Walton and I thoroughly enjoyed it and want to read more books by her. I also hope there is another book about some of the other characters in this story or a sequel for Callie and Reed. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Overall this was sweetish but too unoriginal.
I’m never keen on stories that start with deceit, or lies by omission.
At least Callie does try to tell Reed the truth on more than one occasion but her cowardice, her mummy issues and her lack of maturity made it hard to like her.
Still found her lacking strength at the end as she was still unsure of herself due to her parents not agreeing with her choices.
Reed was so riddled with guilt over an accident that killed his wife, one he hadn’t caused, that he was smothering his daughters and retreating from his career choice.
I’m not sure if this author is trying to be cutesy but it fell flat for me, not quite sure why, but probably had a bit to do with the fact this is a plot line that is overused and was so predictable.
A few words that were incorrect for the meaning in a sentence threw me off when reading.

A second chance for the cowboy...

Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy is a beautiful story between Callie, an aspiring author who, while (re)searching for real-life inspiration, will find true love and a family, and Reed, a single dad who's still recovering from, and coping with, the loss of his wife. While dealing with themes like self discovery, a bit of survivor's guilt and accepting second chances, this book is also sprinkled with its fair share of funny moments, quirky animals (some with certain ego issues), and characters (be them main or side ones) that are fleshed out and will have you feeling all the feels, as well as rooting for them and their love story. A sweet romance read that is completely recommended :)

New romance writer and city girl Callie Claston agrees to a vacation at a Texas dude ranch with her best friend Trish for inspiration and to write an article about romancing a cowboy in seven days. Trish encourages her to set her sights on the local veterinarian Reed Allen. He doesn’t want her there and tries to scare her away by giving her awful tasks that could have seen her seriously hurt. But then he sees her vulnerable side and she meets his adorable daughters. After losing his wife three years ago, Reed is afraid to open his heart to love again and when he finds out their budding romance is fake it could be over before it even starts. There was plenty of humor in this opposites attract romance.

Callie and Reed

Callie is in Sage Valley with her best friend Tricia. They haven't even gotten settled yet when Cal is cornered by "Elvis" the rooster! She comes to the conclusion that he is crazy! Thankfully Reed is there to rescue her after she falls off the porch rail onto her back in the garden. She knows he is hurting but not sure why. Holden his best friend and Tricia decide they need to go on a double date only Cal and Reed aren't as gung ho as they need to be. What happens when Cal meets his daughter's Sam and Becca? His mother-in-law? Will they finally see what everyone else seems to? Will her parents be happy for her? Only one way to find out, read this great book by Crystal Walton. You wont be disappointed!

A bit of light reading. And the cowboy happens to be a vet.
Welcome to the ranch:

Chased by Elvis the cock of the walk rooster
Enter the horse stall in sandals
Pet Titus the feral barn cat
Fall off the horse
Step in it more than once

Three years of riding lessons paid off?

The assignment, romance a cowboy so she can write about it.

We hit all the clichés. Love at first sight, line dancing the Texas two-step, horses, the country fair, home cooking, the buddy. Falling in love wasn’t part of the plan.

This is sweet romance that concentrates on interpersonal relations and horses. It could use a further edit. I was wondering how you deep-fry Coke until I figured out it was funnel cake that was intended.

Pure Delight!

I love Ms. Walton’s books and this one only confirmed my love even more. Her subtle humor (and in the case of this book several parts deserved a good hearty laugh out loud) and detailed characterizations are two of the main reasons I quickly became absorbed in this book. Allen had the kindest heart but he just needed some help in closing the doors of the past and opening new doors into the perfect girl’s arms. Callie was completely adorable with her authentic soul and her vibrancy for life! Ms. Walton’s writing is a breath of fresh air and an open window on a sunshiney day.

Romancing the conflicted cowboy is a very down to earth, fun loving story of a kind hearted vet who is afraid to love again and a fun loving city girl who doesn't realize what she is missing. This story is warmhearted and feels like coming home. From the funny rooster chasing the newbies to the down home family dinners this story takes you to all aspects of life. You feel part of the family from the first page and find yourself rooting for Reed and Callie to have that happy ever after that we all dream about.

Romancing the conflicted cowboy

This was a very enjoyable book. I love book set on a ranch where they are caring for the livestock. The Rooster Elvis was so funny, added so much to the story.

Callie was such a fun character. For a city girl she tried really hard to fit in the ranch life. This is first book in the series and I am looking forward to reading more of the series.

I received a advanced copy of the book from the author. This is my own opinion, I was not required to write an positive review.

I enjoyed reading this book and didn't want the story to end. Thankfully, this is only book 1 in this new series by Crystal Walton. Reed is a single dad trying to learn how to trust his heart to someone else. Callie is a writer looking for real life adventure to help bring authenticity to her books. Throw in a rooster named Elvis, and you have a recipe for many laugh out moments. I can't wait to read what comes next in the series.

I received an ARC copy from the author, and this is my honest, unbiased review.

Crystal Walton has packed a lot of story into this delightful novella. The main characters, Callie and Reed, are well-drawn and endearing, while the secondary characters, including Elvis the rooster, add charm and fun to the story. Walton’s characteristic wit and humor are sprinkled throughout the pages and make this another delicious read. Themes of forgiveness, hope, and overcoming fear give added depth. I’m looking forward to more stories from this author.

Enjoyed

This was a heartwarming story of a heartbroken cowboy and an author who was trying to repair her reputation. Callie has a hard time not falling for Reed and his family. Reed lives in fear of an accident might happen again so he won't let his girls go riding. He doesn't realize the damage he is doing to his children. Callie breaks down the wall he has built around his heart and helps him see the light. In the process Callie falls for Reed that makes for a happy ending.

If you've read Connor's story, you've basically read Reed's

In some ways, I liked it better than Connor's story. But on the whole, there were way too many similarities with Connors story to make it its own. From quirks and crazy chickens to lack of paternal love to controlling parents deciding on the direction their children's lives should take, the two stories were nearly identical. I'm not sure i liked that. I did, however, like that it was clean. I liked the setting and the characters. I could identify with Calli's frustrations as a writer.

Crystal Walton artfully writes a fun, humorous story of discovering hope and love through faith. Reed is a Cowboy who isn’t looking for love and Callie is a City Girl looking to become a Romance Author. Together with a little help from their friends, they find their own HAE. I really enjoyed taking that journey with them. Romancing the Conflicted Cowboy is a great read and I highly recommend it!

Things are not going well for Callie. A bad book review has her questioning her life and now she has a maniac rooster after her. Elvis’s antics had me laughing out loud. Unfortunately, that was Reed’s reaction. Their budding romance had ups and downs, especially since her best friend had set her up to write an article on how to romance a cowboy in 7 days. Crystal Walton brought a book that was funny and entertaining.
