Bon & Rin teamed up n fight imperial king, plus bon finally trust Rin in other hand rin finally released his koma sword to save bon from that demon. Curious to know renzo backstory n at least renzo save neko. Yukio fight against todo, Something yukio eyes changed. I wondered why todo interested in yukio plus his true motive behind it, I know he reminds him as himself. Shiemi finally released her demon friends to save kamiki.

I'm starting to have an anime / manga problem. This volume was a bit more confusing than the rest but I was able to catch up pretty quick towards the end of the volume.
Sorry to Yukio for this as a person but absolutely loving this for him as a character. I just love a good twin dynamic, Seanan McGuire would eat this up.
The climax of the Kyoto arc is quite exciting. I feel bad for Yukio and I really wonder what the future holds for him. I was glad to see Rin and Bon really come together. Can't wait for the next volume.
Volume 8 ramps up the tension and excitement. Freshly freed from his death sentence by his friends, Rin has to help stop the Impure King before its spore sack gets big enough to poison the entire city and causes tens of thousands of deaths. Rin and Bon are on their own, Konekomaru and Shima, not getting to them in time.
However, before that, Yukio has his own trial to get through. Rin’s brother is alone, facing Tobo, who has merged with a phoenix-like demon. Tobo finds Rin’s twin even more interesting than his brother and seems to know what buttons to push to make Yukio lose it. In volumes past, Shura warned Yukio that he was too bottled up, that he was a danger to himself and she is right. Tobo pushes Yukio to the brink and things change for him in a dramatic way.
While Yukio (and later Shima’s brothers) fight Tobo, the girls, Shiemi and Kamiki, are trying to get Bon’s father to safety before he dies. In doing so Shiemi (who is born to the home and hearth archetype as Shura is to the warrior princess, not sure where Kamiki lies) pushes her abilities to amazing limits.
Back with Rin, Bon is doing the same but it’s not really enough. Kuro (Rin’s demon familiar) and Rin can’t keep Bon safe from the Impure King while he maintains the barrier. Rin needs to be able to call on the power of his Satanic heritage but will he be able?
This was very good. This story has matured a lot since the beginning. I really like the characters. While I wish the girls got to do more, I know this is a boy’s manga and they are there, doing their thing without acting ridiculously girlie and/or useless so I can’t complain. It’s going to be hard to wait until the next volume.

The action really came in for this one, and I really loved the focus on Yukio. He's really been in the shadows of both Rin and Father Fujomoto and it's easy to see how overlooked he became in ways - both by others and by himself.
I also loved how all of the boys dealt with their fear. Things have been ramped up to 11 here; and they really are recognizing the potential consequences to their actions (or lack thereof). The bond amongst them also pulls them in really great ways too, and I really liked seeing that not everyone could put on a brave face.
BUT once again, the girlies are sidelined. It's really frustrating to see Shiemi once again at a roadblock and seemingly unwilling to do anything about it until her hand is absolutely forced and things are absolutely dire.
Also interesting that Kamiki is sort of punished for her attitude in snapping at Shiemi to fucking do something. I find it interesting when female characters are punished for not being nice to certain female characters. RF Kuang did it to Venka as well in The Poppy War where she and the main, also called Rin, butted heads (though her punishment was far, far worse).
The focus is def on the kids here and I'm curious about the little plot bunnies popping up here and there. Just wish we could fucking do something with the girls. They have the potential to shine, but will they ever get the chance?
The Impure king is almost to his full form, which means his body has begun to form a city with spores attacking anyone or thing who sets foot on the ground. Rin and Bon hitch a ride on an enlarged Kuro, who whisks them towards the growing poisonous mega-spore. When the mega-spore explodes, poisonous gas will be released and float down the mountain to the unsuspecting city of Kyoto below. Bon takes his new power from Karura and creates a fire barrier to lock in the Impure King’s poisonous gas. Yukio tries to fight off Todo, who has absorbed the Phoenix abilities of Karura, which he stole from Bon’s father. The Shima brothers also aid Yukio in his battle. Mephisto is being annoying and lounging on a couch in the sky just watching the action and providing a bit of color commentary.
We’ve almost reached the end of this arc with the Impure King, but of course Rin has to level up in some way. We get two interesting reveals here, one from Mephisto and one from Yukio, which I'm sure will be stretched on over several volumes. Bon and Rin are back to being competitive friends and they work really well together in this volume. We also finally get to see some attention to Kuro, the cutest character. His agility and speed, plus resistance to the spores of the Impure King, make him essential to getting Bon and Rin into position. The enemy turning into a city concept is something that can be seen throughout Japanese video games and other stories, so this element wasn't as strange to me as it could be to some readers. The illustrations of the puss-bubbles and spores is satisfyingly horrible.
Rin and Bon; I really love this friendship bond that these two are forming. They're tough on each other when they need to be but they always know what to say to one another when one of them is feeling down or discouraged. It's wonderful!
Shima: We see him grow a little this chapter and come out of his cowardly shell a little more.
Yukio and Todo: This was one interesting and mind trippy battle. Yukio is struggling with how he feels about himself, his life, Father Fujimoto, and his responsibility for Rin. It was nice to see that perhaps Yukio isn't as put together as we thought...
THE BAD
Yukio's eyes: I swear if they give him powers from Satan after all this I'll lose my mind. He's plenty strong without them.

As the ex-wires are breaking Rin out of his solitary confinement, Yukio comes face to face with the architect of their troubles – Saburota Todo. Todo taunts Yukio about Rin in order to distract him. Meanwhile, having freed Rin, the ex-wires come across the injured Ossama. Not only that but they find that the Impure King is not only huge but beginning to resemble large buildings. Kamiki and Shiemi offer to take Suguro’s father to where he can received medical assistance, while the others take on the Impure King. From his lofty perch high above them, Mephisto observes but does nothing.
Todo tries to get Yukio to admit he hates Rin, in an effort to divide them. Will Yukio fall prey to a case of sibling rivalry? Kuro takes on his huge demonic form, and allows Rin and Suguro to ride him toward the Impure King. Suguro is to put up the barrier – if he can. After that, they aren’t sure what to do, since Rin isn’t able to draw his sword. Rin teases Suguro, calling him Princess, while Yukio thinks back on life with brother Rin. However, Yukio is not without tricks of his own.
Everyone has their job to do. Shima and Koneko fight their way through the forest, trying to get through before the sac bursts. But doubts assail one of them. They tried their best, and it seems futile to go on. No one will blame them for saving their own lives by running from danger. Isn’t that the sensible thing to do?
There is a lot going on in this volume of Blue Exorcist, and people are looking inside themselves for answers and solutions. Defeating Todo and his Impure King will be no easy task. Everyone must work together or they’ll all fall. Something I was wondering about in the last volume ends up being addressed in this – namely, does Yukio have any demon in him? While we are not given an answer, that is something to ponder.
The fight against the Impure King has become a very interesting arc, and I’m enjoying the character development. I’ve forgotten to mention that some of the volumes have bonus stories. I have to say some are better than others. I am really enjoying this series and look forward to seeing what comes next.
Once again, having watched the anime first, I am very very glad to see how accurately and faithfully the anime adapted the Kyoto arc of the manga.
This volume pretty much covers the whole fight between Yukio and Todo (I cannot wait to find out more about what is going in with Yukio!!!) And pretty much everyone else is fighting to suppress the Impure King with the volume ending with Rin about to strike the final blow.
To be honest, I'm just interested in Rin and Yukio's story plots and nobody else's at this point. Sure, the other characters are fine and all and I do like them to a certain extent, but I believe in Okumura supremacy xD
Anyways, looks like the next volume should finally commence the next arc and the start of me having mo idea what will happen!! So exciting!
this volume is the penultimate one for the Kyoto arc. what has been a pretty good over all arc is coming to an end and i have no clue where the series will go next but i'm extremely curious. this volume built heavily on the relationships between major characters and showed some of the main characters gain a new use their abilities. also liked the small story at the end with kuro, may or may not be what really happened but did help explain a strange mystery to do with him. overall another really good volume in a one favourite series, looking forward to seeing what happens next and where the next arc goes.

Pretty good volume, definitely the best of this arc so far. Most of the focus is on the characters I actually care about, and there’s a few nice emotional developments with some of the core cast. Yukio is slowly becoming more and more emotionally isolated from everyone else, whereas Rin seems to be having the opposite development, growing closer with his friends again after his demon form was revealed to them. It’s an interesting juxtaposition.
Hopefully the final volume of this arc ends with a bang (pretty sure that it ends next volume and volume 10 is a transitionary volume into the next arc but I could be wrong, I forget).
I just express how much I love this series. Each volume is just as fantastic as the one before. I blasted through Volume 8 ridiculously fast. This is a super action-packed volume so it's a quick read. I did find myself forcing myself to slow down and appreciate the art. There are so many beautiful panels in this series and Kazue Kato is amazingly talented. Also, this volume deserves extra stars just for the Princess Suguro line. <3
Ok Saburoto is growing on me as a villain as I do like when villains actually enjoy being evil which can be seen when he taunts Yukio for his choices and it was brutal the way he taunted him. Also even if the importance of it was diminished the Impure King is proving to be a cool monster, the look of it is both disgusting but kind of cool. While it does not have any personality it is still pretty cool seeing everyone evolve to help in the fight as the resolve they have in strengthened.
Now we get to see more depth from Yukio's character. Yukio obviously has mixed feelings about Rin but he ultimately hates himself, which is tragic.
We also saw some development with Shima. He almost decides to ditch everyone and run but he decides not to in the end. Mephisto also never fails to make me laugh. Of course he's watching from the sidelines (the literal sky) while everyone else fights for their lives.
