This was a new twist on some of the cozy mysteries that I have read. I can only imagine how much of a headache it would be to investigate a small town's gossip circle on Halloween.
Christie was a Homicide Detective in Boston but is now working as a cook at her friend's cafe. When she sees someone murdered, her cop boyfriend investigates - but it seems that there is no respect for her knowledge of investigation.
Overview: Christie Watson was a homicide detective in Boston. Now she works as a cook at her best friend's burger bar. While sneaking off to have a fully loaded burger, she witnesses a murder. Who would want Megan dead? And how did Christie get elected to wrangle all of the pumpkin headed shades? Does Mona truly think that she runs the show? Let's find out.
Dislikes: Mona thinks that just because she runs the Sleepy Creek gossip circle, that she can boss everyone around. Good God, she was a nightmare. You don't get that kind of power over anyone, no matter what you think that you know.
Likes: Gris and Arthur had an interesting relationship. Gris runs the burger bar, and her husband is a detective. They have a way to work things out. Plus, we get to meet a pair of women who seek to undermine the gossip circle at every step.
Conclusion: This was a fun little story. The Halloween tie-in fits the tale perfectly. Fans of cozy mysteries should pick this one up. Enjoy the read.
I received this book for free through joining the authors newsletter I enjoyed this book. This is the second book of this author I have read and this one intrigued me way more than the first one. The mystery in this book had some good twists and multiple people to look at that gave me a hard time to put it down. I would definitely read more of the author's stories. I understand that this book is a spinoff of one of her series and it makes me wanna read them. I gave this book 4 stars because I enjoyed the book and I didn’t solve the mystery til towards the end of the book.
Christie was a Homicide Detective in Boston but is now working as a cook at her friend's cafe. When she sees someone murdered, her cop boyfriend investigates - but it seems that there is no respect for her knowledge of investigation. This is a good mystery short story. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This in no way affects my opinion of this story which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
i'm gonna be honest; the best part of this was that it was only 60 pages. the main character has heavy "i'm not like other girls" energy, and the other characters are one-note and flat. the most interesting one was the hyper intelligent cat. our main character acts like an armchair sleuth instead of an ex-detective, the ending doesn't feel like much pay off and while i can get behind a low stakes story there are simply no stakes in this one. it's not bad, but it could have been better.
The characters just seem……dull. I think that’s the best word for it. For someone that used to be. Boston Homicide Detective, Christie doesn’t pack much punch for me. And I know her friends are supposed to be eclectic but they just seem boring. How old are Christie and Liam supposed to be anyway? I have no idea!
There was a lot of fat phobia and negative comments about what people are eating and using weight to describe characters in a negative way.
Also the main character is supposed to be a former Boston cop/investigator but there didn’t seem to be any Boston/East coast in her descriptions or the way she talked or narrating the story.
A short story/novella. This is apparently a story in a spin off series. I have not read the original series. While I appreciate when an author does not rehash everything with each new book in a series, I had difficulty getting a feel for the characters. Perhaps if I had started with the first books.
Good book, the storyline is entertaining and the characters are well written. This book is filled with action and adventure. I can't wait to read more from this author. I received this book as a Free copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
A fun little cozy mystery with a group of small town friends who get together to solve the murder of a member of a local gossip club. A quick read in between reading longer novels or for something to do in your spare time.
A quick read with fun characters, a few twists, and friendships that stand the test of time. A murder, some investigating, good food as always, all surrounded by Halloween.
Who killed Megan Creeley and why??? The Gossip Circle??? Every time they mention the Pumpkin Heads, I think of a clown face!!! I enjoyed this story and recommend the book.
Since I am not familiar with the characters I am giving it a 2.5 rating. Will definitely read more of this author. The story was short and to the point which I did like.
