Nightstar Shifters #2

Protecting Her Mate

Rate this book
Robin Nova was a wolf shifter longing to find her mate. Settling wasn’t in her vocabulary, but her animal was getting restless. She didn’t desire a relationship of convenience, she wanted the one person whom fate had designed for her.

A night out with a few friends and she meets a beautiful human who caught her wolf’s attention.

Heather Wright, whose sweet scent drew Robin to her. The pull to mate was strong, but she had to tread carefully. Heather wasn’t a shifter and would have to be taught their ways.

But it would seem Robin wasn’t the only person enthralled by the beautiful accountant.

Deadly rogue wolves who blew into town and set their sights on Heather. They didn’t abide by the laws of shifters and that made them extremely dangerous.

Robin vowed to do everything in her power to keep Heather safe. As long as she had breath in her body she would defend Heather.

2.5 stars, alas. But the kind of 2.5 stars where there's nothing wrong with the book. It's just bland and kinda forgettable. I was in the mood for something paranormal, and I remembered reading the first book in this f/f werewolf shifter series. This one, I enjoyed a little less. It's about a werewolf shifter who unexpectedly meets her mate, and it turns out to be a human woman working for her pack's company. They hit it off (though Robin doesn't tell Heather that they're mates) but then a group of rogue werewolves decide they want to have Heather for themselves, and Heather ends up staying with Robin for protection. There's the forced proximity, of course, fated mates, and a lot of steam. And it was fine! It felt rushed and hastily plotted and I couldn't bring myself to care about the plot. (WHY did the rogues werewolves want Heather? Who knows! It just felt like villainy for the sake of villainy.) The romance was fine (I liked the bit where the title came into play) and it was super sexy. But there were also some words used that I'm, lol, not fond of. And at one point I wanted to sit these women down and have a safe sex PSA with them.

Honestly, I remembered too late that one of the things I liked best about the first book was the friends to lovers and the fact that I listened to the audiobook. Since I read this physically and it didn't have my favourite trope... alas.

Content warnings: .

2.75 rounded up. Again, this series is a revisit for me, just in audio this time. It's...aggressively mediocre smut, but I'm here for it 🤷

The good:
* Smut, smut, more smut.
* These women are just horny all the damn time! (Good thing? Idk, I'll say yes)
* Low angst, low stakes (it's an easy read/listen that won't take you on an emotional ride)
* Decent narrator

The bad:
* Low writing quality (redundancies, repetitive and awkward word choice, etc - nothing unbearable imo)
* Cringey dialogue, particularly during the sex scenes
* Cringey word choice, particularly during the sex scenes
* Flat characters
* Flat story

Overall, this is a smutty AF insta-love shifter story with horny ladies and the barest bones of a story to give it some semblance of an actual plot aside from "She's my mate!! Imma bite her!! Rawr"

I'm not recommending it because I don't need people coming back to me like "Kaitlyn, WTF?! Are you okay?" But if the above sounds good to you, or bearable, go for it. They're all short reads (and don't need to be read in order), so it isn't a huge waste of time if you end up hating it.

To love and protect each other

Robin finally found her mate and she is careful to take her time getting to know her. She also needs to protect her from some rouge wolves threatening to harm her. Heather can't believe how strong her feeling for Robin are. Now she has to convince Robin that she's all in. I truly love this series it is so hot and thrilling. I wish there w were more than just 3 books.

A sexy, sweet, with a little vinegar, shifter story

In a universe where shifters and humans live and work together, it’s not too far a stretch to find them falling in love. When mutual work friends introduce Robin (a white wolf) to human Heather. Robin’s wolf informs her that Heather is her fate intended mate - Robin sets her sights on Heather. The story goes from there.

There are many editing problems and, for me, that always detracts from the read, especially if I paid for the book. The writing doesn’t always flow but the story has good sex and a HEA. I will buy and read the next book in the series - but the first book has been the better of the two.

I've read a lot of books written by Ariel Marie; she has done a great job at writing a good book; she is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

for an author that wrote an incredible vampire trilogy. this werewolf shifter quintology so far is just so boring. It's just so predictable. Half the chapters feel like "my wolf wants to mate rn" and then they just have sex and it repeats.

i dont know.

maybe this series is just not for me. the next few books have like a witch and a bear shifter i believe? those might be better. we'll see.

The author has written another quick, hot, drama filled romance with leads Robin (wolf shifter/marketing executive) and Heather (human accountant). Triple heat sex scenes, rogue wolf shifters and the knowledge that Robin has found her mate add to the excitement. When your mate's life is on the line, you take action.
I rec'd an ARC through Booksprouts and this is a voluntary, un-biased review.

I finished Protecting Her Mate straight after reading Sailing With Her Wolf because I was just so addicted, and they both managed to surprise me with how well they were written. I like the whole wolf and human thing, but I also like how shifters are known by humans, and not just hidden away, it makes it way more interesting, especially with how some people hate them but others love them.

You even see the two main characters from Sailing With Her Wolf, Marley and Zara, and I know they’re in the same series but I love how you can actually see how they are connected and including those characters in Protecting Her Mate.

When the men started talking to Heather I immediately knew something was going to go wrong, but to find out that they were also shifters and could still stalk/smell Heather wherever she went. Just made it ten times worse, but I was glad to see how in all of the books, the shifters never let anything bad happen to their mates, and that they took the brunt of everything.

I was so worried that something would happen to Robin when the men ended up taking her and tying her up, but I’m glad that her mate was there to help her and even though she was human, she helped her in ways you wouldn’t expect them to. It shows that the mating bond goes both ways, and that they’d do anything to make sure their mate was safe.

This book was amazing and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, it was amazing, especially after reading the first book, I just couldn’t stop reading.

Con -
Only thing I’d like to see are trigger warnings, I don’t particularly like reading about rape and sexual assault, so I’d like to know if there are things that could possibly trigger me or anyone else, this wasn’t as bad as it could’ve been so I could still read it, but it’s different for others.

Once you find your 'one', don't wait. Robin was getting ready to settle down isnce her froend Marley had found her mate. She met Heather, human at a welcome home party and scented her. Heather worked as an accountant at Nightstar, Inc. Robin's wolf, recognized her mate. Heather was aware of Robin's interest and played to it when they first met. The ladies were enjoying getting to know each other when Dusty, Luther and Frank decided they wanted to play with Heather, whether she was interested or not. Robin protected Heather, but she was put on alert. Robin decided to go slow with Heather, not revealing they were mates. Heather did a little info gathering to get a better understanding about human/shifter relationship. They hung out and got to know each other better. Dusty, Luther and Frank were still intereste in Heather?Does Robin reveal Heather is her mate? Is Heather open to mating? Do Dusty, Luther and Frank walk away? Do Dusty, Luther and Frank just walk away? Delicious story. Exciting! Well done. I received and ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Excellent cover art!

Heather and Robin met at party that the pack had and Robin knew that they were mates. Some rogues had their eye on having Heather, they had get rid of problem. But Heather wouldn’t let Robin wait for that to happen before claiming her. Heather helped the enforcers catch them after them taking Robin. Things ended really great for them! Another great book by Ariel Marie! Can’t wait for the next book!

Loved it!

I'm a sucker for shifter romances especially female/female, and this author does a really great job with this genre . The main characters were so cute together. I loved the chemistry between Robin and Heather, and their love for each other and their families and friends was really sweet to see. The passionate parts of the story was pretty hot to. I am looking forward to the next book in this series, and I hope it's soon.

Paranormal love story

Not really much of a story it was mainly a love story between a wolf and a human with a bit of danger with three rogue wolves who decide the human is fair game. But it mainly was about the relationship.This was a
disappointment for me and not really a true paranormal story more a love story than anything.
Ariel Marie did a good job of writing this but to me it was more a paranormal love story than anything.

Fun and fast sapphic goodness! 💖

I loved the characters, the plot was good, and the smut was 🌶🌶🌶
I will say though, the writing is pretty clunky to the point of it being distracting at times. During several of the sexy scenes I was actually taken out of it because I was kinda editing in my mind as I read. Some of the word choices were not fantastic and the dialog was pretty robotic in some scenes.
Despite that though, I loved it! I'll definitely be reading the next book in this series. 😁

Book 2 is definitely better than the first one. Theres a little more human reactions to each other and its not 99% smut but maybe 80% smut instead. I'd still like some more world building and some explainations for how the whole shifter lifestyles work. I do feel like they fall into love a little too easily, and that there should have been more shifter politics and like angry beehive reactions about invasion of territories. To me that felt a tiny touch too passive of a reaction.

Tw - Sexual Assualt

Much better pacing than the previous b9ok, still not perfect skipping over some main plot points and stretching out a few moments far too long but nothing utterly condemning.

More romance in the last one but a similar dynamic even if the charcaters are very different. Also more of a defined plot.

Better installment than the first!

Good story! Quick fun read for sure.
Something about the writing style didn't really flow easily, it was a bit choppy and the dialog was a little awkward at times. Still, I'll probably keep reading the series. I feel like it was better than the first one, so maybe the author is just finding their footing.

Great Read

I loved that this read. Heather had an internal strength that showed at the right times within the book. And I loved that Robin had a mix a Beta and Alpha traits, and she her head instead of being led by those strong primal instincts. They made a great couple.

It was good. I wished there was more of Zara and Marley, but I get that it's a sequel in the series but not a direct sequel. I liked the contrast between the two and yet seeing how well they fit together.

Loving this series

I’ve read both books and this writer brings the heat. I’m impressed that the protagonists were from different backgrounds and that the story still sizzled. I’ll be on the lookout for the next book

Love shifter stories

I greatly enjoyed Ariel Marie's book Protecting Her Mate. What I enjoyed most about it was how the shifter and human both had a deep desire to protect each other. If you enjoy shifter stories or are looking for a good read, I recommend reading this book.
