War and Deceit #4

Fires of War

Rate this book
“Slavery. Torture. Necromancy. Kidnapping. Genocide.
These are just some of the crimes committed by those who would call me their enemy.
They tried to break me, to strike fear into my heart, but with my mates at my side, I survived, my body and spirit have endured.
I am stronger than they know,
But now it’s their turn to be afraid.”

War has been declared in Morrowmer.
Reeling from the attack by the Forsaken, Clarissa needs to unlock her hidden memories and learn about her mysterious abilities. She’ll need to make haste if she and her mates are to survive the darkness that’s threatening to engulf Morrowmer. To do this she has a monumental task; to unite the races that have been at war for millennia.
With her mates at her side, they’re all stronger, but they have battles of their own to fight in the form of jealousy and pride.
However, while the Elf Queen’s evil is infecting the land, Clarissa has another darkness to battle. The king of Arhaven. The man responsible for her years of slavery and for slaughtering her mother before her very eyes.
One thing is for certain, the evil must be scorched from the land, but once the smoke clears, will anyone have survived the fires of war?

This book is intended for readers 18+ and is a reverse harem story. There are some scenes that younger readers may find upsetting.

I'm new to the reverse harem genre, but this one wasn't so bad. I don't think I'll ever get to a point where I'll prefer them, but with a good enough plot I can accept it. And this book had an amazing plot. It was a really intriguing read and I enjoyed it immensely and sad to see the series end. I'll definitely be reading more by this author.

I've really been looking forward to the last book of the War and Deceit series. I found myself getting totally invested in the characters and the world that the author has written and after every book, I have been left wanting to know more.

The story now comes to an epic conclusion, Clarissa and her mates have come so far since book one. And even though she sometimes still has doubts in herself you can see the growth she has gone through and it's brilliant to watch, or should I say read. In this book, it's now the final battle between all the enemies Clarissa has picked up along the way.

Any loose ends are neatly tied up, and there's a certain group of creatures from one of the earlier books that I was so happy to see again especially after the interaction Clarissa had, had with them previously.

When you get to the end of the book don't forget to keep going for the bonus chapter cause it's so worth it. I swear I've been waiting for four books for that bonus chapter and now I finally got it so yes!

There's a little sneak peek into one of the characters in the Fires of the Fae series which is coming soon. Also, A City of Smoke and Ashes will be coming in 2021!

What a truly fantastic series. I loved this main character from the start and I love her guys. This is a perfect ending to this story. Everything flows nicely and loose ends are tied up. The bonus chapter at the end is great. I really loved this series.

I feel like I would enjoy this series if I didn't read it straight after Bloodlines....

There's too many similarities... Both series have wicked queen thirsty of power and using their subject, there's all this journey of the chosen one by godess, fmc learns about her heritage, she is extremely insecure and have million doubts, kinda sheltered, fmc finds out she have a half-brother.

There's war and divide between races and gmc have to unite them all on behest of godess. Blessed/ chosen one have intimate relationship with deity and she constantly reassure fmc of basically everything.

A good read deserves 5 stars but...for one thing

So as the title reads I loved this story all up until the last book. The series as a whole is fantastic. A great fantastical and enchanting story with characters that really pull you in...like Lord of the Rings style. But...Clarissa got on my nerves. So I understand her reluctance, shyness, lack of confidence and complete ignorance to the world due to her upbringing but I thought that by the last book she would gain confidence and be a complete bada$$. Well...that didn't happen for me. She questioned everything still...after all this time. Gaining powers, learning to fight, gaining mates who constantly uplifted her, as well as the goddess guiding her she still was whiney and constantly questioning why she was chosen blah blah blah. It got really tiring for me and I hate to say it but it made me skim the last half of the story because at that time I was just done. I don't know if other readers feel the way I do but I will say that just because I feel this way does not mean that the book series is not a 5 star series. It was honestly great I just wish Clarissa wasn't such a whine box and had gained more confidence as the story progressed.

I absolutely loved this high fantasy series by Erin O'Kane. Throughout the 4 books, Erin makes you fall in love with Clarissa and her men, and the family she makes on her journey as the beloved for the Mother/Goddess. I thought the journey was amazing, lots of highs and lows, emotion at the wazoo, but every moment was fantastic and I didnt want it to end. I loved she is doing a spinoff of the series, I am gonna jump into that seeing as book 2 of that series releases this month ❤️

In terms of just book 4, Fires of War, I would give it a solid 4.5 stars. I thought the lead up to the big confrontation was done amazingly. We get to see Clarissa become a part of the Mountain Tribe, see her become mates with Tor and someone else we all knew was going to be her 4th mate (I loved how vulnerable he was and how ooey gooey he was when he let his guard down and how Clarissa stood her ground with him 😍). We got to see Clarissa unite the various elves, the Mages, and the tribes to help defeat the Evil Queen and the King. I loved seeing the differences shine between them all and how everyone reacted when Clarissa's friends came to the camp haha. It was great to see some old friends from previous books in book 4 and the showdown with Rhydian and the King at Arhaven was done fantastically.

I think my only constructive feedback was the ending felt a tad rushed and not as fleshed out as Erin had done in previous books. I loved how detailed this story was, the relationship and world building, its why I was so engrossed in this world and am eagerly waiting to start the next one. I don't want to give anything away but when Clarissa has a hint thrown at her, the resolution was done really quickly with creatures that based on previous behavior in the series wouldn't have been that quick to agree/do things like that. The confrontation with the King and Queen wasn't as detailed and expansive as the rest of the writing was. I thought the end confrontation with Rhydian a little lackluster. We had this big build-up in previous books and even in this book when they went to the castle, and the way his story ended was very brief. I know he wasn't the main bad guy, but that made me a little sad how that was so brief. Not saying the whole ending was bad, but instead of loving it, I just liked it (difference of a 4 and 5 stars). I thought it had a lot of potential and while it was good, it didnt shine as much as I had hoped/live up to the standard the rest of the book created.

Overall 5 stars for this RH, slow-burn, high fantasy series!! Amazing world, fabulous relationships, a great team of baddies you can easily root against and main and side characters to fall in love with. I will say Erin left the ending very open ended. Not sure if these characters will have some cameos or if we will get another series from them. I liked the epilogue and set-up for the spinoff but I had more questions at the end than I would have liked for the end of a series haha. I need to know what happened to Jacob, the bond/god's blessing with Clarissa's 4th mate, who is going to rule despite the disagreements, etc. I will say that last steamy scene was a great way to end it 🥵🤣❤️.

A satisfying end to a great series.

The final book of War and Deceit series has Clarissa and her mates, coming together to face off against the evil human king and the elf queen. Supporters join them in their quest from various races like wood elves, sea elves, magicians, tribes and humans, something that has never happened before. Fighting the darkness threatening to engulf the whole kingdom, Clarissa, with the help of her Goddess strives to save her people.

My suggestion would be to binge read the whole series as it is a bit slow. I read the first 3 many months ago and was eagerly waiting for this one, but it took me quite some time to get into it. I did not remember few details so it was a rocky start. Once I recollected the details, I could get back into it easily and the book held my interest.
The characters are great and they've developed over time. They had depth and emotions which helped me connect with them. Clarissa grew stronger and I liked her progress and Eldrin went through some major change from feeling broken to gaining love and acceptance.
The plot is good, though there were few ups and downs where I wished it would pick up the pace. I was a bit annoyed with the repetitive sentences and descriptions, but with time I got over it.
The steamy scenes were great and well done. There was a good balance between love and lust.
I enjoyed the ending, especially how it all came together. Some old characters were back in the scene and the loose ends were tied up with some revelations.
There was also a good amount of action which kept the story interesting.
I recommend this to everyone who enjoys a good reverse harem fantasy.

3.5 Long Spoilers within

This one was long, so long it felt that it kind of dragged a bit and then the showdown was just kind of a letdown. Barely any tension, barely Clarissa getting hurt or attacked or anything. She released a dam and that worked..sort of. But she got the drop on the creepy prince and then was able to deal with the elf queen? It just was too easy and didn’t feel done or complete.

We spend so much time relationshiping, which is good, and also meandering that idk this whole ending was kind of a let down. The journey to get here was great but all that work and effort Clarissa did, and then it started happening off page. And we got less and less of her learning magic or new things, we got less of her practicing, she still does but it’s more of a minor scene then a major scene and I think we should have seen her struggle, have a bit of failure.

Also as to her name, so was it actually Liv? If she’s a vessel of the goddess or whatever why couldn’t she restore Clarissa’s memories? The story isn’t bad I just feel like I got left on the hook. The epilogue is of the Lady in Waiting for a spin off story, which tbh makes me slightly miffed bc I would like to see an epilogue with Clarissa…which there is one. Right after this first epilogue. Now in this it’s basically a sex scene with 3/4 mates and they are ok with sharing…in the bedroom. Idk how I feel about this since I know Tor wouldn’t have an issue but to say that Vae wouldn’t…or Grayson…really….I think this included Grayson…maybe not but tbh after reading this ending I wasn’t wanting to read a mostly sex story epilogue. I wanted some of those issues I brought up wrapped up.

Overall the journey was great the ending was a slight letdown. It wasn’t as big or huge epic fight as I wanted.

Rushed Ending

There will be Spoilers.

I devoured the first 3 books but had a hard time finishing this one. The internal narrative got really repetitive with the self doubt and bouts of self confidence. Plus the whole trust in the mother yet they don’t trust Clarissa half the time was super annoying. As pointed out in the book faith should be enough without proof. The storyline with the king was weird. That he was hesitant to join the evil queen made no sense to me. He was literally on the same evil path. And the storyline with him wanting her mother was a little far fetched and brushed over. Her whole past felt brushed over and we were supposed to just accept that. I was disappointed there wasn’t a moment of Clarissa coming full circle and freed the slaves. I think they would have had enough man power to overtake the kingdom when they went to visit upon request. It made no sense that their literal plan was to walk right into the trap and hope for the best. Considering her mates were warriors they were too complacent to have absolutely no strategy against their enemies. The were just emotional support dogs.
And this may sound bad. But I actually wanted Eldrin to die. I wanted a whole Sydney Carton storyline to happen with him and he sacrifice himself to save one of the mother blessed bonds. And right before he died the mother allowed for the connection just so he could be whole. It would have been super poetic especially with his life being treated as he wasn’t wanted.

There were way too many open ended questions and a giant power vacuum. I assume there will be spin off series. But this one was not ended neatly.

Oh my gosh, wowsers and a half! What an utterly amazing series this has been!

This is the fourth book in the war and deceit series following on from book three "fires of ruin".

Everywhere you look there's a great evil lurking. From the Queen with her forsaken army, to the King who thought nothing of his rampage.

Clarissa is the chosen one, but is it all too much for her?

I loved Clarissa from the moment I met her. When she was a slave, looking death in the eye.

Slowly but surely she found herself with the help of the great mother and her fated mates that she has met along the way.

Her story has not been full of roses and rainbows, it's been treacherous and hateful cast in the darkness whilst surrounded by shadows. But all was never lost with the amount of love in her life. There was always a slither of hope, and I clung onto that for dear life!

I have never been able to choose between her men. From the rugged and mountainous man, to the magician who loses control and the feral and ferocious high elves.

They each play a part in giving this story a true place in your heart.

I'm sad that my time with Clarissa has now ended, but I'm excited to learn more from characters I never saw coming.

Erin O'Kane is a one click author through and through. Her attention to depth and detail is like no other. I simply can't shout about her loud enough.

***SPOILERS***

I am conflicted about this book. I really enjoyed it until I got closer to the end. I knew the ending was not going to be what I wanted. There just wasn’t enough time to resolve the problem and then have a happily ever after. And part of it felt incomplete. At times, it seemed that the forsaken may not be dead and therefore could be possibly be saved. They didn’t get saved though and instead they all died. All of the children that the king allowed to be changed ended up dead? That was not the ending I expected. And in this book we don’t get a chance to see the king go to trial or find out what happens to him. We don’t know what rebuilding the city looks like or who is going to fill the positions that the king and fae queen left. I want more about what Clarissa’s life is going to be like now that she has fulfilled the Great Mother’s mission. She has been building to this moment from the beginning but we don’t get the closure from seeing her happily settled. This feeling of things not being done makes me want to read the other books in this world, but I am worried that I won’t find the answers I am looking for and that makes it hard for me to pick up a book. I want to know that by reading about the lady in waiting that I will find answers and closure about Clarissa.

Hands down one of my favourite series of this year.

I love this series so much that I did a reread of the previous books to prepare for the release of this one. I was still in awe with the world, the characters and the plot.

I binged this book on release day, needing it like someone needs water in the desert. I loved how all the different characters came together in this book, giving us the finale we were craving. Not only Clarissa and her mates stole the show by the way and I am beyond thrilled that the author will be releasing more books in this universe. She definitely has the rare ability to make me feel like I was living in this world, with the characters. Her world building was on point, which is something that is easily overdone (too much description) or underdone (too complicated) and I was here for it. I never suspected that this series would grab my attention when I first started it and I am so happy I gave it a chance. For me this was exactly what a fantasy romance series should be.

Wow, that was a great end to the series! Clarissa's character has seen so much development - from a lowly, insecure slave to a kickass heroine with a pure heart. She has finally found her roots and in order to defeat the evil Elf Queen and King of Arhaven, she will need the help of mankind - from elves, mages and tribesmen. Her task is great and full of uncertainty, but with the help of her mates, she will face the greatest, oldest battle of all time - good versus evil.

I loved that throughout this book, the relationship between Clarissa and her mates progressed. Not only that, but Eldrin was able to heal through friendship and love that has developed between him and Clarissa. I was expecting a bit more of an action when Clarissa faced off with the Elf Queen (I know, I know I'm such a bloodthirsty bitch) but it was still great fight scene. After I finished it and read the sneak peek to its spin-off, I got my answer to why that fight scene ended the way it was. I loved it and can't wait to read the next series!

Mixed review

This series has left me feeling confused. Did I enjoy it? I'm not sure, but I can certainly say I didn't not enjoy it. I'll start with the positives. The story could be gripping, a tale of discovery, and an adventure with great characters . The heroes are likeable whilst the villains are simply villainous. There are plenty of plot twists and secrets revealed throughout the 4 books.
I love the world of mages, humans and fae the author has created.
I didn't like that the story is written in present tense which I struggled with at first however, I began to get use to it after a while. My main issue is the main character's relationship with the 4 main male characters. I've never read a reverse harem story, or indeed an ordinary harem story, and it certainly wasn't my cup of tea. I thought the lurid sex scenes whilst incredibly descriptive, were not necessary. I skimmed through them after the first one.
Would I recommend this series of books... I'd tell anyone to give them a go, and judge for yourself.

Ohh my what an adventure the author took us on! I loved Clarissa so much thought out this series, I loved watching her grow from a slave to a leader! She was a survivor with determination and a kind heart. Though out the series Clarissa struggled with believing in herself, she couldn’t see her self how other viewed her. But she was a great leader and advisor, Clarissa trusted in her goddess to lead the way and it never led her astray!

I loved how the mates were all different and each brought something to the bond that Clarissa needed! It was also hard on them having to move past there hatred for one another to support Clarissa! I loved watching the group from and bond both in the harem and the friends they made along the way.

This was a great series full of fantasy and adventure, with many magical beings included. These books were magical and Erin should be proud of the beautiful world she has created!

When I started this series I really enjoyed it because for the first time I found and RH book that is not only good for the romance but also the plot is amazing and all characters are easy to love even when they aren’t the main ones.

But, this book I didn’t like at all because I found it to be so hurried and even the battle scene wish should be the biggest portion of the book is just not it, and it’s also badly described.
But also the romance went very fast like I don’t even know why the propagandist’s harem even like her except because she is the “beloved” and let’s not start about the fact that everyone loooooves her just because a weird god lady likes her.

But over all this series was very enjoyable I just wished the last book was executed better in terms of detail and description and was longer.

The conclusion - or is it?😈 It was everything I was hoping for Clarrisa.
Redemption
Vengeance
Action
Romance
Bonding

We finally get some closure with some of the men and our leading lady!! Only because she wasnt going to take "no" for an answer.
Tor is still my Bae, though, with Eldrin being a close second - and then there's Grayson. Lol. Dreamy sigh.

Some of the other characters weren't as present in this book, and that was slightly disappointing. I feel with RH, it's sometimes difficult to balance all the men.

There is a steamy epilogue afterwards, so make sure read on after the teaser. 🖤💜

Overall it was a great conclusion to these character arcs - with hints at other Characters getting their story. 👌👍👏👏

Good ending a lot of unanswered questions

I enjoyed the final book in the series I fell in love with all of the characters, I wish we got to see more of Wilson.

*********************************

The ending was kinda rushed, I wish we would of gotten to see if Jacob takes the Throne, or if Clarissa gets her memories back I would of loved to know how her a Tor knew each other it hinted at it since he basically came into the book but then we never got the answers. I would of liked to know how the relationships between her elves and Grayson progressed, and lastly I wish we would of gotten an epiloge of her and her guys to see how got started on there new life or her going back to her tribe

The epic conclusion to a high fantasy RH series I absolutely loved. The world building, the characters, the slow burn and slow build, the tension between the men, ... it all created an amazing series that grabbed me and didn't let go until I finished the last page. I highly recommend everyone to read it!

The only thing that still bugs me after finishing it is not knowing how their relationship will work longterm. Some of these characters are supposed to have a lifespan of more than 1000 years, others have a human lifespan or something in between (maybe)... I would have liked an answer to that question somewhere, but it's a small detail that doesn't impact how I enjoyed reading this series. I am definitely checking out this authors other books in the (near) future.

That was a beautifully written, Epic ending to a series!!! This had everything I love, a fierce female lead, some sexy yummy Alpha Males (4 to be exact), a couple nasty villains and a battle to bring it all to a head. I loved every minute of this book, Erin did an amazing job, wrapping everything up wonderfully. Sometimes in the last book, somethings can feel rushed, like oh yeah here's that answer and move on. Not this book at all it flowed perfectly, this whole series, each book just built beautifully one after the other, piece by piece, this will definitely become one I recommend alot. If some reason your reading this and you haven't started this series yet, what the heck are you waiting for, take the leap I promise you won't be sorry!!

Fires of War, the fourth and final book in The War and Deceit series, continues the story of Clarissa, Vaeril, Grayson, and Tor. With both the evil Queen and King teaming up to work against Clarissa, what will happen to our group of heroes? As they continue their journey’s of growth and discovery, everything ties together beautifully to give you such a wonderful end to this series. Although I was sad to see this series end, I am looking forward to what the author brings us next in her new books. With the bonus chapter giving us a glimpse into the next story set in the same realm of Morrowmer when we follow a new story.

I really loved this whole series, and this book was my favorite of the saga. Clarissa really comes into her own, and her mate bonds finally settle. It's an awesome ending battle with plenty of action, doubt, faith, and light. As good works to overcome evil, we finally find out the real story of what's been going on in Morrowmer, and it's a harrowing reality. With all sides coming together to fight off the darkness, tensions mount, but in the end, they come together beautifully to ensure their hea. And the bonus epilogue is the stream I've been craving from book 1. I'm excited to read the spin off series in the works and I highly recommend this series if you love slow burn, rh, high fantasy.

Good.

This author is fantastic. Her characters and the worlds she creates are interesting and complex. Clarissa was a perfect mix of vulnerable but kick-butt. The plot was well thought out and flowed well between the books. I only have 2 issues with this book.
1. While the guys are interesting, they are very shallow. We don’t know much about them.
2. There are multiple story threads that are mentioned and then never addressed again. For example (I’m being deliberately vague, don’t want to spoil) we never get any histories on the guys. Why were they captured? What was the history between one of the guys and FMC? Also what happens to the kingdoms?

I have been hooked on this series since page 1 of Fires of Hatred. A lot of the books I've read recently are a little too fast paced for me, but this one I couldn't put down. Clarissa has over come so much heartache, loss, pain mentally and physically. Each of her mates have helped with all her loss as the books go on. This book brought everything together at a pace that makes the reader understand exactly how Clarissa was feeling. I've loved all of Erin's books and I gotta say this book might be one of my all time favorites.

This was a full story wrap up! It neither felt rushed or left open ended plot points. I loved that we finally got to see some very in depth character interactions here at the end of the series, especially since most of the series was running from place to place. Clarissa had tremendous growth throughout the series for a traumatized FMC, and it was really awesome to see her bloom under adversity from every quarter. She's a very well written character!! Definitely reccomend this end of the series book, and I don't do that very often because they often disappoint me leaving things out ❤

A must read

I loved this entire series and I really don’t want it to end. Four books in two days.

This series was well written with amazing characters. Clarissa such a strong female lead character.

Four loyal, loving and handsome mates. Who offer her love, kindness and guidance, without over powering her. I wouldn’t want to chose my favourite between Grayson, Tor, Vaeril or Eldrin. But something about the way Eldrin and Clarissa’s love grows over time, makes Eldrin my favourite by a smidge.

Fires of War was the perfect conclusion to the War and Deceit series. Clarissa, Eldrin, Grayson, Tor, and Vaeril all grew so much throughout the series not just with their own character growth but pushing through prejudices and learning to work together. I am sad to see their story end, but I am beyond excited to see what else Erin O'Kane will come up with some of the other side characters because I have a feeling that even though the queen has been defeated there is still much to be explored in this world.
