Blessed Prey

Soulmate or prey?

It would take a miracle to turn fifteen-year-old Tulip's life around—or at least a whole lot of magick—so when her coven decides to cast love spells, Tulip is all in. The right person could give Tulip the strength she needs to escape the cycle of abuse that binds her.

Experienced Druid, Victor Chasen, seems to be the answer to Tulip's prayers. Despite her coven's warnings, Tulip finds herself irresistibly drawn to this man who promises access to magick's deepest mysteries.

With the law at odds to what feels right, Tulip's ability to discern ally from enemy warps. Alone, she must discover the difference between divine will and manipulation before she loses herself to that one ill-wrought spell.

This is a first!!

I am someone who really struggles to read books on screen (phone, tablet, kindle....) I never seem to be able to focus and would have to read the same passage over and over, even if I have already read the book, and my eyes would tire quickly. Yet this time was different!
I found myself immersed in the story and couldn't put it down. I kept on reading and fought to keep my eyes going on for one more sentence when all they wanted to do was give up and call it a night!

The book was very smooth to read. It has a nice flow to it even though the topic itself was not an easy one to tackle, but I found it to be tactfully done. I mean let's face it, there is no way to make abuse and self-harm look or sound polished!
Magick filled the pages and friendships were put to the test.
A teenager wanting love, discovering lust and trying to figure out who she was along the way.
There is a little bit of everything and a little something for everyone to relate to!

No spoilers:
-The characters were fun and captivating; LGBTQ+ inclusive too ^_^.
Most I grew fond of, some I just wanted to reach through the words and strangle with all my might!
-I suspected a twist in the story and when it was revealed, I couldn't help but let out a loud "I KNEW IT" out of nowhere which made my hubby question my sanity!
-I chuckled when I read a sentence that was said to me word for word, in the same context!
-There was a rough scene (in my opinion) that luckily didn't drag out to long. It was enough to make me tear up and feel a knot in my throat. That goes to show how, even with simple words, the author was able to get a feeling across!

In short, I would strongly recommend <3

Practical Magic meets American Beauty, but in Australia!

Tulip is a young wiccan struggling through high school with low self-esteem and a difficult life at home. Her saving grace comes from her coven, a diverse group of teens with their own struggles. When they cast a love spell, she stumbles across Victor Chasen, a witch who seems to have all the answers to Tulip's problems...

This book right here? Absolutely visceral.

This book legit made me cry. It also made me gasp/scream multiple times rofl You definitely want to buddy read this for emotional support, but I actually think this would be a good book club read too.

This completely works as a stand-alone even though it's the 3rd book in a series so don't worry about feeling lost.

If I had to put this book into a genre, I'd have to say literary.

The only way I can really describe it is like the long ride to the top of a rollercoaster that lets you get juuuust comfortable enough before dropping you 400 feet at 100mph. You've been warned.

* Diverse cast with multiple ethnicities and LGBTQ+ Representation

* Content Warning for self-harm and abuse among other things on the title page.

Spoliers!!***

This is a hard one to read. To be in the head of a child who is being preyed upon is not only horrific and heartbreaking but relevant. How do we love in a world where this is happening!?

So sad for our MC and her friends and family. The story shows the truth of what happens when a child is preyed upon but convinces themselves otherwise.

The writting was realistic and I felt the emotions Tulip (Poe) felt every time she rationalized something to herself. Every time she talked through her thought process, I believed it. It was so believable it broke my heart. I was happy to see that the ending is kind of left open. I'm not normally one for open endings but with a story that was this tough to get through, I am glad we, as the readers, get to envision something more for Poe.

Good read, touches on a topic that is necessary for people to understand and see. I would recommend to every young teen for this reason. I can't imagine rereading this book because of the subject matter, that's the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Abuse in every sense of the word.

I am rating 2 Stars because of the quality of the writing. This is a book about a young female child (15 years 0ld), who is abused in the worst ways possible leading her to self-mutilation, physical abuse from a drunken mother, being preyed upon by a dirty older sicko, and finally being left to figure out the way to get out of this situation. A similar book exists in French called: "Aurore L'Enfant martyr" and, being a parent and grandparent with a granddaughter of that age, I would like nothing more than to slap the idiot mother and kick the old perve's arse all over the place. Since I am not violent, I keep away from this type of book because emotional abuse is equal if not worse than physical abuse. A teenage child is at its most vulnerable.

I picked this up because the blurb and the cover. I started the book and was a little worried with how the story unfolded, but as it became clearer what the author was doing, I was hooked and in for the ride. Tulip is a complicated character with an amazing character arc, the difference between Chase at the start to the end just shows the levels he goes to. Overall, I read this in one sitting, desperate to finish and find out what happened and the end. An author to watch, and a book I very much enjoyed!
