This series is remarkable, an absolute ideal for a new language learner like me. So I read the first Crystal Hunters manga about 6 months ago. The first one was manageable but I had to look up a lot. I've been practicing and learning in the time in between.
And I tell you, on book 2 I was reading. Not stop, look up, check, move to next panel. So many times I read some dialogue and just thought "Wow, I just understood that". The language remains incredibly simple, but that's what makes it accessible and useful to people early on in learning the language. Like last time, I read the English copy after finishing the Japanese one and found that I hadn't really missed anything, which was a great confidence boost.
The story itself is split into two parts this time. And it manages to give its characters a surprising amount of depth given the short length and limited range of expression available in the simple vocabulary. It also doesn't shy away from some violence that makes sense in its world, but still took me by surprise. We associate the simplicity of language with being aimed at children, but that's not the case here - adults learn new languages too.
There is also a touching real world story from the author on the final page, about how one of the characters got her name.
If you're learning a language that Crystal Hunters is published in, it's well worth a read. It's great practice and a fun story.
I really enjoyed this manga more than the first. As they have a little more vocabulary (20 more words), they can tell a much more complex story. To be honest, the story in the first book was too simple, but the characters really do come to life in this one. It's too bad that the issues come so slowly. By the time this series is long enough to teach 1000 words, I'll (hopefully) already be at an N3 level or better, so it won't help me. But I hope it helps others!
The writers continue to get about as deep a story as you can get with simple language. They do a great job naturally introducing new vocabulary. These books continue to be a great learning tool, but some of the scenes can drag a little bit. Still infinitely more exciting to study a language in a sword and sorcery setting.
As simple as they are, these books really do give the reader a reason to continue on other than feeling good about reading in a new language. I'm actually pumped to keep going, both to see what happens with the characters and to continue my language learning journey.
I loved the direction this volume went. Glad to see the new vocabulary, just enough to keep me interested. The verb 倒す and its usage caught me by surprise again! Evocative! This is how you teach, publishers.
Great follow up to the first book in how the grammar and vocabulary build on themselves! The plot is simple, but engaging enough to keep the reader interested and grows in complexity as the reader's proficiency grows as well. Would definitely recommend this series as a learning resource.
Having simple language is amazing. I love that I read good portions of this with relative ease. It has helped wonders in my learning journey. Thank you!
