Two beautiful female mages down. . . an Academy of thousands to go.
If you haven’t read the first book, then I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Grab that now and read about how exactly a Creation Mage learns his spells.
When you’re done, come back here, and you can read all about my new classes, my new spells, and my venture into the Mage Games.
I'd want to point out that I am actually a fan of Erotica, Harem Novels (Both forward and reverse), and a fan of fantasy and Sci-fi. What follows is my opinion, but it isn't based on a bias against the genre or the author.
I'll be vague here on purpose: No spoilers or plot info of note.
Series in a nutshell: Modern world nobody pulled into a fantasy magic universe to attend a magic school after a 'test' in a bookstore. He's AMAZING... with 'powers' of course.
The 'You're a Hazard, Harry' bit continues, but the 'school world' finds him surrounded by a host of hotties who can't help but fawn on him as he has to vanquish the .... blah blah blah de blah.
The protagonist is poorly fashioned and lacks any dimension beyond the 'slip-into-my-skin' POV, and the various adventures are barely PG-13.
Maybe it was just lost in the sea of other similar works I've perused lately, but I found nothing specific to recommend this series. Any reader of hyper-generic harem 'lit' style fiction will find it achingly familiar... Flawless faces, flawless bodies, 'flawful' plot.
Finally, I'd comment that there is NOTHING WRONG with this, if you're a fan of the subgenre then it's as comfortingly predictable as buttered toast, but if you like anything edgy or more unique in your 'young adult' harem erotica you may want to look elsewhere... Still, given it's an hour read (for me) per installment, you might give it a roll.
After the first book showed some promise and potential, this was a disappointment - I thought this was fairly awful! Similar to the first book, this one is divided into two plot arcs - the latter half of the book focuses on Justin's introduction into the Mage Games, which is fine. I don't have an issue with that part. No, my issues are largely with the first half of the book, which centers around a "rivalry" brewing with another frat. The problem with this "rivalry" is that it is completely manufactured - Justin goes out of his way to deliberately antagonize these people for no good reason. He meets them in a hallway, where they motion him over so they can talk to him. After a few words are exchanged, the group of them begin whispering to each other, and Justin assumes they're about to haze him, so he physically attacks them out of nowhere as some kind of "precaution." Yes - he actually thinks that violently attacking people is a good and proper solution to the possibility of being hazed. Everything that follows is based on the fact that Justin attacked them, for literally no reason. It's stupid as hell. As the conflict escalates, Justin is constantly justifying his reasons for doing all of this, as if it makes any fucking sense. It doesn't. He's just antagonizing these people for his own entertainment. After so much time was being dedicated to this conflict, I went back and reread the initial passage, just to make sure I hadn't missed something, and perhaps Justin's actions were justified after all. Nope. To make matters worse, everyone in Justin's frat, and even some of his girlfriends all go along with Justin's plans to continually harass this other frat, and no one stops to ask why they're doing any of it. Everyone treats it as being totally normal - even the frat being attacked, honestly. They don't like the fact they're being attacked, obviously, but they never stop to go "why the hell are you even doing any of this?!" which would be a totally reasonable question. The author desperately wants to create a rivalry, but wants it to happen without any effort on his part, so he neglects to add any sort of believable reasoning for any of it. In the second half of the book, when Justin learns about and beings preparing for the Mage Game, there actually is time passage - the first passage to happen in either book. About 3 weeks pass. During this time, nothing interesting happens, including any potential reprisal from the rival frat. But why not? Wouldn't they want to exact some revenge? Oh, wait, no, the author didn't want anything to happen, so it didn't. Real convincing rivalry you have there. I thought I remember reading somewhere in one of these author's synopses that he writes characters who "don't take crap and know what they want," or something along those lines. (I can't find where I would've read that, though.) I don't think going out of your way to attack people because you feel like it falls under that category, though. That's just being an idiot. EDIT (11 months later): Ha, I found it in the about the author section of the next book. It says: "His [the author] books involve strong male protagonists who know what they want and do what's required to get it." I still stand by that being incorrect; they're idiots.
Justin was a fairly stereotypical frat dudebro douche in the first book, and that gets dialed up ever further in this book. He's absolutely insufferable. The main problem with it is that every joke he makes is met with laughter and pats on the back, as if he's the greatest comedian of his time. But it's all fucking stupid and terrible jokes that no one would actually laugh at. Like, if he was cracking these awful jokes and everyone around him pointed out how stupid he is, then that would be one thing. But that's not what's happening. He's immature and idiotic, but is made to be perfect and infallible. It goes hand-in-hand with what I said earlier, how he attacked people out of nowhere. If that was treated in the book as being a dumb decision and no one understood why he did that, then that would possibly lead to some interesting characterization. But, no, that is also treated as if he is doing the right and smart thing. Which it most certainly is not.
The references to real-world things gets worse. I don't know why harem authors continually shove in references all the time, they're always bad and lazy. This goes as far as to use one during a sex scene, which is stupid and completely ruins the scene.
I had this book for a while, but didn't read... I read book one and decided to pick this up afterwards, but I can't remember my hesitation.
Yeah. This is my last book in this series, or by the author. I know it's a Harry Potter knock off, but the book is written for adults (adults themes, topics, situations), but the writing of itself is written for immature teenage readers.
This is a chore and painful to read. The protagonist also seems like a damn idiot. You catch someone in your house breaking your stuff, after you warned them, will you continue to talk to them, then stand and watch as they pull out a weapon on you? After you got rid of their weapon, would you start to mouth off again and watch them grab another weapon?
Ok I like this type of series based around a magical university so that will color the review. Overall it was good and has some very funny moments that made me laugh. The last 25% boosted the book from a 4 to a 4.5 rounded up. The capture the flag and the action scenes from the kill the monsters was really good and made the last 25% fly by as I read it.
This one was really good, Justin is really coming into his powers…. But I think he needs to work on his strategies a bit more… Kings humor though can sometimes be hilarious…. The toads and Amy joke was spot on with so much truth it out me to tears laughing 😂. The world building is excellent and I don’t know about the rest of you lads out there… but as I look at the cover of the books and get the idea of what these women look like, I’m MEGA curious what Alura looks like… anyone else wonder about her? Or Kryn and Iowyn? The spectre that was in his bed with the tail got me curious as well. Also Justin throws caution to the wind and just talks about the white staff like no one evil can be listening. He knew the arcane council was at those games yet he’s talking Willy nilly to the professor about the staff out in the open after the professor told him more than once that it’s not safe 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️. It’s just funny that he points out the other guys impatience but doesn’t exercise it himself 😂. That being said I cannot wait for book three. Onward, lads!
I swear this series is Dante's best and at this point I never want it to end. I have not laughed this hard in a long time. Tears were shed at multiple times throughout this book and I will be moving directly onto book 3. If you haven't started this series go and buy book 1. If you have read book 1, buy this now! I am just going to say. Panty dropped potion, this is the gift that keeps on giving in book 2. Keep up the amazing work with series Dante King. I will for sure continue to buy it and recommend to everyone.
Pretty ladies, awesome magic, and a fun story. All good in my opinion. The magic is not explained but the creation mage just gets them by sex so rough life that. The MC, Justin, flies by the seat of his pants but used creative combat and whit to overcome his foes. the insults and whitticisms are awesome and fun. Enjoyable series and I can't wait for the next book.
A truly fun and crazy harem action yarn with fascinating characters and twists. I’m very much enjoying that it’s not a one-man show - the frat brothers, female friends, and other friends remain key plot players. And while the harem element is strong, the action is much stronger, which is another big plus. Lastly, the story still doesn’t take itself too seriously (yet) which makes it fun, with hilarious moments. Definitely recommended (17+)
While not as outright funny (compared to the first one), there were still lots of laughs, chuckles, and HA! moments in this one. It also sets up the next book nicely, so when it comes out, I'll need to read that one too. Still could do without the harem bits, since I'm not really sure where creation equates with sex, but whatever, the author can call it what they like, whether it makes sense to the readers or not.
I really like that the main character is strong but not somehow all knowing. His abilities are tempered with his knowledge and I liked it we're discovering things with the characters. Instead of it being like the character knows and we don't. Plot development and character development are very consistent and balanced while with the action. Overall very well done and I'm looking forward to the next book
I honestly think this volume would have been better solving the poltergeist problem and setting up the Mage Battles for book 3. Still, this was pretty fun, but the fact that several adults at the academy were involved in, or know the answers to what happened in the Void Wars and aren't telling the Main Character annoys me.
Having a sequel better than the original is a hard fast in any medium, especially with how much I loved book 1, but Dante definitely pulled it off with book 2. Without spoilers, I must say that I almost dropped my iPad laughing at the consequences faced by Rick and Damien for their part in the frat prank. Looking forward to book 3.
A Creation Mage, aka Sex Mage, gain their powers by having sex with other mages. Therefore they don't have a specific class of magic, but all types of magic that their partners have. It is a very 'Hard' job, but someone has to do it!
This was another really fun read from start to finish and I'm on to the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I suppose if I were a mage that is how I would want to learn new spells. Things continue to grow more interesting for Justin. The story and characters were intriguing and engaging. I look forward to reading more about these characters and their further adventures. This book is definitely worth reading.
I flew through the first book loving every page and the second book was much the same. I love the plot and characters and how the author is starting to flesh out some of the relationships. Excited for the next one
Nice and light, competitive without existential crisis. Very fun, and I am looking forward to all installments of this series. Hopefully it’s a long one. Read in order.
This is a fascinating world with incredible creative and intriguing lore! You can't help but root for the characters in every facet of their lives! Looking forward to the next!
I am a character driven reader, if I like the characters and their development, I will read all of those books and these two books fit the bill of great characters. Cannot wait for the next one.
Witty banter, hilarious rivalries and gorgeous battle mages ready to rumble? What's not to love with these books, and the second only builds on the first!
A Wonderful book series that sort of reminds me a little bit of Harry Potter, but in a more 18 rated version with a little bit of hunger games mixed in, in just a few words beautifully thrilling and seductive.
Dante King really writes fun stories. Which are highly enjoyable to read. Justin's story is great as well as hilarious. I really love how he (the author) comes up with such fun to read situations in his books.
Magic battles, monsters and sex. What more could you ask for? Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. I look forward to the next one 😀
The strength of the relationships between the characters is a lightning bolt of freshness. I really enjoy the brutal honesty they have with each other and don't take things personally or out of context.
