Dovie: A story about love that transcends time, race, and even death.

Rate this book
“Dovie” is the poignant and often hilarious story of Penny Branch, a young, African-American woman who discovers a beautiful, blonde baby tucked behind a headstone in Sandfield Cemetery. Against advice and better judgment, she decides to keep her, christening the infant “Dovie” because of her soft cooing sounds. It soon becomes apparent that this is no ordinary baby. Dovie sometimes slips, partially, into mirrors, as if the surface were a liquid pool of silver. Penny is able to pull the child back before she is completely lost. But, will she always be there to save this extraordinary little girl? Her passion to protect Dovie, and to solve the mystery of her origin, takes Penny into the world of modern-day Gypsy Travellers. With them, she leaves the small town of Columbus, Mississippi, and begins a circuitous quest for answers. “Dovie” addresses themes of acceptance that transcend racial lines and crossed dimensions. It suggests that love can sometimes be misguided and expressed in twisted ways. There is no violence or graphic sex scenes. It is appropriate for adults and mature teens. It is a complete novel of 45,000 words in length.

From the very first chapter, I was both intrigued and swept away by Dovie. The characters, and, especially, Penny, J’Wayneous, and Lala, helped transport to a world where love conquers all a place where we would all like to be. I absolutely loved this book, and I can’t wait until the next effort by Ms. Elliott.
