Fresh off their first major victory against the Nyctus, the Orbital Navy is moving forward in confusion. Starcasters, led by Thorn Stellers, are not trusted—magic has not replaced the power of steel and naval might, and humanity is at a crossroads.
As Thorn and Kira define their roles in the new navy, magic refuses to stay still. When Thorn discovers he has untapped power, Mol Wyant helps him use it.
The results will change every rule, along with the known galaxy, for Thorn Stellers isn’t just a magician of unknown power.
He’s a weapon of undiscovered fury.
With Kira, Mol, and a salty captain, Thorn will push the edge of warfare into something new. Something wild and deadly—a threat the Nyctus could never have predicted.
Using his power like a sword, Thorn carves open the first path to victory, using sorcery of such terrifying strength that it challenges the laws of physics.
But at what cost? Can his crew trust him, knowing he can change the nature of space and time? Can he even trust himself?
Another fast paced, action packed Chaney/Maggert story. Humanity was attacked out of nowhere by the Nyctus, a squid like alien race. They aren’t interested in talking, to them humans are the dregs of the Galaxy. The fact that they have highly developed psychic powers has seen them destroy planet after planet and led to the ON (Orbital Navy) looking for humans with psychic powers to combat them. Two such are Thorn Stellers and his childhood friend, Kira Wixcombe. Thorn is the strongest psy wielder that humanity has found to date and his limits are yet unknown. Kira is a Joiner and when she is captured by the her powers increase exponentially. Both of them are crucial to the war effort.
Have to say that book 2 is even better than book 1. Lots of little twists here and there and character development continues to be amazing just as much as the world building. I have to say that I haven't read a sci-fi book recently that kills off supporting cast on such a regular basis as this series does. It follows the same path as book 1 with friends and other supporting staff dying at different times, some heroically and some not so.much. I have to say I like it as a change of pace from most sci-fi where everyone seems to survive even the most fatal of missions. Great read and now looking forward to book 3.
Very interesting premise for the series and this book. I was getting tired of the renegade universe and I’m glad this book took place in an alternate or a different universe. The two main protagonist a very engaging and I hopeThat their friendship and relation ship will develop as the series continues. The science fiction aspects take a secondary position wow character development is in the forefront. I could nitpick but I won’t, each book has its flaws read the book you may enjoy it.
Really a very good series! I like how it ties in what some people considered magic in Old Earth history. Characters very likable, it's a little confusing about Midway through the book, but if you just stick with it everything will make sense. Definitely can't wait for the next in the series.
This second book was definitely better than the first. I really enjoy the way the author writes his dialogue and action. Unfortunately, his descriptions of things still leave plenty to be desired, but I think I'll live with it. Can't wait to get into the next book in the series.
I finished this book in two sittings! I even gave up the NBA final to finish this. Fully engaging storyline, entertaining and a great read. May be my favorite JN Chaney and Terry Maggert series to date.
Solid book, but I guess the novelty wore off a bit. Well written and paced, it just lacked a certain something that would push it to a 5th star. This doesn't mean I didn't like it, and I will certainly be reading the next one.
Warm bed, good book, what more could you want? Together these two authors are writing a classic series that will be worthwhile storing in permanent memory for later re-reading. This book continuous a story in a way classic writers would applaud.
Excellent read.takes you to a new height of thrill, imagination and without any gender bias, defines chain of command, strategy and planning, heroics.strongly recommended .
Normally I enjoy more hard science SF but this series really has me enthralled. Great characters as expected of these authors and really creative plots. This one in book 2 especially. Great twists.
Oh this is a fun little series. It’s definitely something i would’ve eaten up if i read 10 years ago yet i still find myself having fun with it. It’s got a good mix of action, military, magic and just the characters being fun with each other. Looking forward to the next book!
