Love & Luck #6

Can't Get You Out of My Bed

Rate this book
Ben

Aidan Kelly. To everyone else in the world he’s the star of a successful extreme travel show, but to me he’s the one that won’t go away.

It started with one of those typical high school crushes on my best friend’s older brother, which turned out to be not entirely unrequited…

There was that time just after high school where someone (not me) may or may not have hurled all over someone else’s c*ck. Then there was that incident in Austin where…well, let’s just say it gave a whole new meaning to the term ‘bull-riding’. And let’s not forget that little thing with the rental car…

But it doesn’t matter how good the sex is, or how deep the attraction is, Aidan and I are just never going to work. There’s the distance for one, and the fact that one of us (not me) is a closeted celebrity…and that’s all without going into how whenever we’re in the same place we just can’t seem to stop from hurting each other. And not just in the good way…

The only option to maintain my sanity is to avoid Aidan and force myself not to think about him. But that’s easier said than done when—thanks to my best friend’s misguided ‘help’—we end up living in the same freakin’ apartment…

Warning: This book is not appropriate for anyone who doesn’t like laughing, anyone who doesn’t like terrible karaoke, or anyone who doesn’t like when two hella gorgeous guys have a ton of smoking-hot sex as they work through their sh*t to get to their happy ending.

*Happily Ever After included.

I never thought I’d read an Ilsa Olsen book I didn’t love. This book was so frustrating for me.

Ben was just awful. He just kept string Aiden along. He never explained why. He would just have sex with him and in the next breath he was pushing him away without any explanation. It just didn’t make any sense to me. I kept hoping Aiden would find someone else and just walk away. I knew that wouldn’t happen. It had a nice HEA as I knew it would. I still love the way Ilsa writes, and I’ve read all the Kelley family books.

This was the least favorite of the series. I'd been waiting patiently for Aidan's story, and knowing he and Ben had some stories to tell. But I didn't expect that I didn't like Ben. Yeah, he's an asshole, playing with Aidan's feeling. He just keep saying no and running away from Aidan instead of talking about it. Speaking of a very lacking communication. And it's been going on for more than ten years!
I still love the Kelly's family, but I felt sorry for Aidan, for waiting for Ben for that long and always rejected every time, for years. Ugh!
No, I didn't enjoy the book, I even almost put it down, because I was so upset and bored.
So. yeah, not for me.

3.5 stars... rounded up

I recieved an ARC from GRR in exchange for an honest review.

There were some things that I REALLY LIKED in this book and some things that were a bit offputting...hence the lowish rating.

What I Liked...
- The Humor....
There were some pretty funny stuff going on like the banter and the family group texts. Some internal momologue frim Aiden was funny as well and in the beginning, it really drew me to the book.

- The Family Dynamics...
Although it's a bit reminiscent of the Made Marian and/or Wilde series by Lucy Lennox, the familiar relationships were sweet and endearing.

- Aiden...
I really liked his character. He was brave and went for what he wanted. Sure he made mistakes along the way, and maybe lost directions, but he never gave up which I appreciated.

What I didn't like...
- Ben...
I didn't hate him per se, but I didn't feel connected to him at all. For me, he didn't have any backbone and gave up way too easily.

- The Sex Scenes/ Dirty Talk...
I didn't feel them... They were not "panty-melting" scenes and the durty talk was so repetitive for my taste. It seeemd like both characters were alwsys using the same phrase... " Please, baby, get inside me".
Also, the endearment baby was thrown left and right.

- The Coming Out...
First, I didn't understand why Auden couldn't be out to his family. MOST of them are queer. I get being in the closet for a career, but a family who will accept you shouldn't be left in the dark. Second, it was all wrapped up fairly quickly and with no fanfare, which left me wanting.

All in all, it was enjoyable, I snort laughed quite a few times, but it was an OK read. The author obviously has talent, which if polished, would make great books.

It's me not you...

This will be my last foray into the Kelly Family, it's all got a little bit too messy and confusing. Sweetish story and if you love hectic, interfering families with lots going on then this is perfect for you.

*Spoilers*
Sorry for the spoilers but I really disliked Ben. He was constantly rejecting and running away from Aiden because he said their relationship wouldn't work. Well there's no way to know that if you don't at least try. Part of the reason was because Aiden wasn't out yet. He tells Aiden that he would never give him an ultimatum but he doesn't want to hide their relationship (which is basically an ultimatum without saying the words chose me or else). Obviously Aiden was going to come out, whether he was or wasn't ready, after that because he wanted to be with Ben. He also changes his whole career around for Ben who meanwhile plans on moving back to Austin and never talking to Aiden again. I don't think Aiden was perfect either. I just had a hard time with these two characters and Ben was the worst out of the two.

Eh. Probably my least favourite couple in the series. It was alright with some funny moments and the good old Kelly group chat, but mostly flashbacks and Ben saying nope. I felt sorry for Aiden being shot down repeatedly and the blame felt a little one sided. Mixed messages and bad communication all around for these two. Ellie was a breath of fresh air. Finn’s story sounds scarily cringe. Can’t wait.

This was just OK. I enjoyed many of the surrounding characters in this book; as other reviewers have mentioned, Ellie was wonderful. I pictured her as Hunter Schafer from Euphoria. However, so much of this started to irk me the further I read.

I get having a series with an interweaving set of characters, but I think sometime authors go buck wild. There's a brother who is dating his best friend's son, and then the best friend is married to first guy's kid brother. There is another brother who dated Josh, who was his friend, but now Josh is engaged to another brother. Some how there are 209430242 lgbtq* siblings that also have many children. It all starts to get too much, too convoluted, and I don't think characters' storylines can breathe. This isn't to say I didn't like the siblings and their partners. I absolutely did, but I just feel like it become too much side character filler, and less actual real plot between the main characters.

Ben bothered me so much. So much drama of kissing and then dramatic denial. Why couldn't these fools just talk to each other like adults? Ignoring of emails and texts for years, but then they'd share a kiss and it's all baby, baby, baby. The more it went on without any communication the more it felt like a teenager was behaving in that manner, and frankly, it felt at times that Ben didn't deserve Aiden.

Speaking of baby. There was no subtlety in that endearment. I realize some couples rarely use their names in leu of pet names, but I've always felt that hit harder in a romantic story when used sparsely. Or at the very least, they are earned in a way.

The dirty talk wasn't sexy? I also didn't get why certain dialogue pieces were in italics for the sex scenes? If it was to make the line have more impact, you lose that when it's every other line italicized.

When you combine all of these individual factors: the numerous side characters, the underdeveloped plot, the silly miscommunication or lack of communication, the over usage of pet names, lack of character development, and little steam from the two characters, it just adds up to a missed opportunity for me.

I've heard the first two books are the author's best, and it begins to go off the rails a bit from some of my other friends, so I will absolutely try from the beginning again because despite what I mention above, I did like it, but I just didn't love it.

This one....didn't quite work for me. We usually get a lot of fun and sweetness with this series and this just missed the mark. It was a bit heavier in the angst department and I spent a lot of time frustrated. Aidan and Ben just had to have one conversation and things could have been smoothed over, or at least there wouldn't have been so much assumption and hurt.

Aidan Kelly has been in love with his brother Declan's best friend Ben since he were 15. Ben has also been harboring feelings for Aidan. On the night of Ben and Declan's big grad party, Aidan decides to come out and confess his feelings for Ben. It doesn't go as planned and this sparks 11 years of missed opportunities, miscommunication, and too much time apart. We start the story AFTER they have fallen in love so we don't get to experience it with them. Then we get to cringe as incident after incident they can't seem to get it together and all they can do is get dicked down and then Ben panics and runs. I will say I felt for Aidan and had a hard time with Ben. Aidan was absolutely clueless and floundering, but he was trying and when we find out what happened at Declan's wedding my heart broke for him.

What could have saved this is if after the wedding when they are accidental roommates if they tried to build their friendship again and had a freaking conversation. Really talked and tried to be more. They spent so much time apart I wasn't invested in them to begin with so it would have been nice to be with them as they tried to build something together.

Another thing that I felt was complete weird and unnecessary was the chapter before the epilogue. I just, could have totally gone without that random scene.

What I LOVE was Ellie and Aidan's friendship. That was the highlight of the book for me. Plus, of course, all the fun times with the Kelly clan.

Disappointing

I have read and enjoyed all the other books by this author in this series. They had great storylines and characters. This was was purely about two people who have nothing on their minds but sex. I didn't find a good storyline at all. Didn't even finish reading it. I read about three quarters of it sporadically. The others once I started I didn't want to put them down.

This series has completely tanked for me. Declan and Heath's story was amazing. And it's just gone downhill from there. I think part of the problem is that the author is trying to intertwine the stories. You get little drops of the next book halfway through the current book your reading. The problem....the next book is really messy, and it never seems to truly fit with the story.

Oh, by the way, it's weird that every brother is now gay or whatever definition is next in the dictionary because, yeah, it's starting to get confusing as hell. In this one, Aiden is not only pansexual but also homoromantic. Why is this author so hell-bent on labels??? We go back and forth with pronouns, they/them/he/she, because, of course, this book is told mainly in the past, which is just overly irritating. Just let them love someone, for pete's sake.

I knew this one was going to be rough based on Connor and Josh's story, and I wasn't wrong. I may skim through the Christmas book next because it's supposed to highlight all the relationships up till this point, but I'm done with this series after this. I could care less about Finn or Caite's story because these books are not getting better. They are so messy and all over the place.

Second chance MM Romance

2 stars!

This is my least favorite book in this series. It is one of my least favorite tropes (second chance) and I found the excuses for the on and off again to be just absolutely irritating. I also found the "time hopping" to be a bit confusing. It didn't feel as smooth as I would have liked and these MCs were just mean. If you can't understand why someone wouldn't want to bring up a mortifying event just to clue you in that he knows it happened then I can't root for you!

I am struggling to find something I like about this book. I hate saying that but I just don't feel the love. I don't understand how people squander 15 years of on again/off again hooking up and get to a place of permanent on with a full blown relationship. Maybe I'm too much of a realist for this kind of love story but I anticipate off again before the nuptials. Sorry.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

The Love & Luck series follows along with the Kelly family and Aidan has been mentioned, but since he was always traveling, we haven’t seen much of him. We do know there have been encounters over the years between Ben and Aidan, and everyone knew something had happened at the wedding in the last book, but the family doesn’t know anything about their relationship all these years.

Incomplete. I didn’t finish the book. 3.5

I read till about 66% of the book and I couldn’t take it anymore. Ben was such a douche to Aidan. It seems like Aidan was always chasing him, and he keeps shutting him down while pretending to be a nice guy. There was nothing nice about him, and honestly they shouldn’t have ended up together at all. I can understand if a character is a straight up douche, but what I don’t like is a writer trying to convince us that this horrible person, is a good guy. There was nothing good about Ben and Aidan deserved someone way better.

The laughter was missing. The relationships tangled. Low-key preachiness pervades much of the book. Not the worst book but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It has the distinction of being one of the most extreme examples of the irritating trope ‘if only they would talk.’

So much manufactured drama, and misunderstandings for no damn reason. There is no good reason why Aidan and Ben should have taken this long to get their shit straightened out. Did not like Ben very much.

My most anticipated couple in this series, and I wasn't let down! Although I liked Ben and I could sympathise with why he thought it couldn't ever work out between him and Aidan, I simply adored Aidan! Yes, they both could have handled a number of situations in their past better, but honestly, when I got to what happened at Heath and Dec's wedding, I was an absolute goner. It was probably the most heartbroken I've felt at any point in this series. But thankfully, it does not last long at all because the author knows how to make you constantly laugh and swoon. Ben might fight it for a long time, and Aidan might let him for almost as long, but these two are meant to be. After all their mishaps and miscommunication, it works out wonderfully when they finally let themselves acknowledge that being together is all they've ever wanted. And also, finally getting to read the karaoke part from their perspectives... I must say that was well worth the wait!

A little bit disappointed with Book 6!

The + :
- Reuniting with the Kelly family and other characters from previous books.
- Ellie's character: what a breath of fresh air, funny, lively! I hope Ellie will be back in future books!
- Aidan's persistence with Ben.
- The chemistry between the MCs.

The - :
- The main characters. Their voices were too close and under developed which led to bland personalities comparing to Declan, Shay, etc.. I can get behind the fact that the Kelly family is huge and getting special and differentiated voices for each of them can be tricky to install in 300 pages over 6 books.
- Repeated plot twists. It was getting tiresome when the thread of rejection / non-communication / assumptions happen 3 times or more. I wasn't compelled to this storyline. It wasn't angsty which to be honest I would have preferred as it could have added turmoil and deepened emotions.
- The "hot scenes". I don't know what happened in Book 6 but the magic disappeared! It felt forced and the dirty talk was blurbed, out of the blue. They were well done in Book 1 to 5 but here, it feels that something was off. Or rushed. Some of them were enjoyable, but others, I know Isla Olsen does better and hotter than that!

It was an enjoyable book but it will have to be my least favorite couple of the series. Though, I'm excited (mostly hoping) to read more about Finn's story. Please, can we have a book on Ellie or at least with Ellie as a very present character?

When timing is everything.. Aiden has loved Ben for a long time but the time was never right. Road blocks are everywhere for them. Ben is super stubborn too almost to the point where you want to shake him and yell SNAP OUT OF IT! He has his reasons though.

We go down memory lane with these two and there are some serious disasters on that road but also some scorching
🔥🔥🔥moments, Wowser!

The thread of love is in this story throughout and you are just hoping they can work it out.

The epilogues are fab and so is the afterword by Isla doing a bit of explaining. Loved that. The series is great. Love the family connection and I am excited it continues on to book 7!

This one was decent and I liked the extra cast member of Elliot/Ellie, who will apparently be a love interest for the next brother's book. What I didn't like was Ben, who was a real asshole to Aidan a lot of the time. The reason given for this is kinda weak, IMO. It just didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Also, for women who write MM romance/erotica, there is NOTHING wrong with a guy being just a top or just a bottom. It kills me how these guys almost always are vers, which is not reflective of my experience at all. FYI.

The thing I hate the most in romance novels is when the entire plot is based on miscommunication or lack of communication. And that's exactly what happened in this book. MCs couldn't have an actual talk for more than 10 years.
Plus, I couldn't see anything but physical attraction between them. They didn't really know each other after all those years and there was no getting reacquainted.
Group chats were the only thing I really enjoyed in this book.

Far too confusing with too many characters.

DNF. Stopped at around 48%. This just wasn't for me. This book switched from one character to another which was fine but the time line kept skipping. And one character ( a friend ) being they in one time line and he or she in another... I also felt that Aiden was trying too hard for Ben. I just didn't get it.

From the first book, Ben and Aiden were both not my favorite characters, great places to start this book.

The last bit of sympathy I had for Ben after Two Men and a Baby he lost pretty quickly because I didn't understand why he kept leaving? To me, Aiden deserves a better HEA.

Only you

Oh my heart, Ben and Aiden have whisked it away with their heartfelt and unforgettable story. These two have it all: explosive, sizzling chemistry, I-wouldn’t-believe-it-if-I-didn’t-experience it moments, and powerful ties that bind them together. “I have loved you since the first day I met you, and I know without a doubt I’ll love you until the day I die.” The feels with these two. Their past, their present and their future; no bull, it’s a beautifully messy, delightful and and truly wonderful journey that I’m happy to experience again and again.
