I feel his eyes on my back with every step I take. He’s following me. Chasing me. There’s nowhere for me to go, nowhere to hide that he won’t find me. He moves in smoke and shadows. He is the darkness. He tracks my every move like a predator with gold glowing eyes in the night. I know he’s going to catch me, the only question is…why do I want him to?
I have no idea who he is or what he wants. I know I should be terrified…but I’m not.
There are things happening to me…things I can’t control or explain…things that only I can see. Magic pours from me like a scarlet river and this locket around my neck pulses with dark, electric energy. I think it’s what he wants…but he isn’t the only thing on the hunt for it. Demons hide around every corner, they attack mercilessly and relentlessly - the only thing they seem to be afraid of is him.
That should be a warning, except there’s something inside me that begs to be near him. I feel it like a magnet, drawing me closer and I’m running out of reasons to fight it.
He is the Prince of Hell…and he’s either my savior or my damnation…
The Rose Witch is a novel set in The Coven saga but is designed to be read as a stand-alone.
The H should get an Oscar for most dramatic in a series
I just couldn't, I was 37% in and it was like watching a baby giraffe stumble! I'm not a big fan of freaking t.f out, and seeing it happened literary all of 15% of the read it was taxing. The H was freaking out, crying, gasping, shrinking, feeling sick having pretty much a mental breakdown. After said breakdown there is a party thrown and then we get the same don't and dance we just got over, she's running and screaming and I kept asking myself why not act like a functional person with idk maybe a little common sense and ask the demon guy what's up? Why all the dramatics? 37% of Chloe acting like a hot mess was way overkill for me. This might be a good book, but I can't get past the stupidity
When Chandelle LaVaun announced this would be a stand-alone from the rest of her series, The Coven, I was interested to see how that would play out and if any cameos of our favorite characters would come into play, and they did! Not only do we see some of our favorite characters again, this book is perfect for those who want just a taste of what this beautiful series is about and if you want to dedicate yourself to going all in. Immediately we are introduced to our new protagonist, Chloe, and see what her life is like and who she is. One of my favorite things about Chandelle LaVaun is she has a way with her characters to where they are so truly realistic, you feel as if you are actually in someone’s head. There is nothing “fictional” about them other than the magic they possess. They come off as every day people just like you and me. The layers to who they are is so rare a find in a book, it becomes addicting and you want to get to know this person more and more. Our leading lady Chloe is like that. I know this is a stand-alone, but I am highly hoping Chandelle will give us more in the rest of the official series! The pace was perfectly done here. I get nervous with stand-alones as I feel they can be a bit too fast, but this was a perfect mixture and the wording was done in a way to where you truly understood all that was happening. Due to it not being a part of the official series, it can be read at any point within the novels but I highly suggest that if you are wanting to become a part of the full universe that has been created, it be read before The Cursed Witch. There are references to other areas of the books so I do not recommend it if you have not read at least the Academy of Magic season. This book is also a tiny bit more adult in certain scenes than the books as Chloe is an adult, so go in with that in mind. I am not at all surprised at the creativity of this woman. She is an author that has a way with her books that I rarely find in anyone else. It’s something that deserves to be shared with everyone and I feel so grateful these books came into my life. If you have not yet read Chandelle’s books, please do. I can guarantee there will be no regrets.
From the very beginning of this book you will be sucked in. Poor Chloe is having the day from hell, but once she gets some answers.... things get better
Chandelle is one of my favorites and I devour everything she writes, and I just couldn't stop reading once I started. I am pretty sure that Spot will end up stealing the show. So buckle up, grab some snacks and be prepared for an epic adventure that only Chandelle can provide
Let me start off by saying I love the coven series. I am up to date on the entire series! Tegan/Tennessee series loved it, Jackson/B series loved it! These last two books (Saffies first book and this one) are just not my speed. Chloe is whiny and scared pretty much the entire book. Maybe because this is a stand alone but I did not care for her rushed soulmate. I just feel like you believe all the other soulmates within the series but this was just corny honestly. Chloe comes off as weak the entire book it’s like she never grows a pair. Does nothing without her soulmate or on her own really. I wanted to love this book I really did but Chloes personality was terrible BUT I love the history being woven between the books and I love who her dad! So it’s a 3 for me. I do think you should read the other books to really understand and catch some of the hints/answers!
Currently putting up past reviews from my Blog on GR because I forgot at the time oops 😅
I judged this book by its cover and I was burned. As interesting as the world the author created is there was something that just didn't click with me. In the beginning, it was a lot of descriptions for everything. I just kept thinking why the author just can't let me use my own dang imagination. A short while after that were the info dumps for how the universe worked and boy! were those boring and long.
The heroine overreacted a lot. So much of the beginning of this novel could have been resolved had she just stopped panicking and spoken to the guy for like five minutes. I disliked how she was supposed to be this powerful witch but found herself incapacitated every time things got going. As you can tell by now, I wasn't a fan of hers.
The hero is a 700+ year-old who blushes at even the slightest innuendo. I'm not mad at it but it also didn't really match well with who he was supposed to be (at least for me). Other than the rough beginning, he was very sweet and charming. Granted he had his own reasons for doing what he was doing but at least he was transparent about them considering the life-or-death stakes.
The last quarter of this book lost its steam for me. I'll be honest and say that I skimmed a lot of it. I was just ready to get it over with. The miracle that happened with the heroine was really weird and strangely weaved into the story as well. I don't think I'll be reading any future books in this series/universe.
Holy cow! Chandelle really knows how to work a plot twist. From start to finish, this book had me captivated. I got it when I was at work, it knew that I couldn’t start reading it until I got home. Having JUST finished this book my emotions are a little raw. Love, hate, pain, you name it, it’s probably in here.
Revelations about other characters arise in The Rose Witch. I know this is a stand-alone, but I can see this book tying in almost perfectly with the Fae Magic series. If you have read ANY of Chandelles work, you know that this book is amazing.
This book had a strange start. I didn't really like the FMC, and it took me until about 30% to find her decent, but she's so immature (through the whole book) that it was hard for me to take any of this seriously. Yes, it's fiction, but I'd like the characters to be relatively relatable and act their age.
The book didn’t actually get started until the 40% mark. It had only been two days since the beginning of the book, and as a reader, you'd probably think that so much has happened in those 90 pages, but... no. Nothing really happened. A lot of it was the history of the family (which is given to the reader so quickly and unnaturally that it's hard to grasp) and the rest of it is the FMC freaking out about things, responding the same way to the things happening around her, and wondering why she's freaking out so much... come on, dude, change your tone! Do something else, and maybe something different will happen!
Finally! 44% things were progressing! This should have happened a while ago, at least! The MMC should have been introduced around the 25% mark at the latest, and what happens at the 44% mark should be happening at the 30% mark. This book could be 100 pages shorter and still tell the exact same story.
And the ending was a rush of so much that I could hardly keep up with what was going on. Honestly, I should have just DNF'd this book, but I hate doing that, so I pushed through.
This is a great read from an amazing world created by this author and believe me you will wanna read the other stories! It’s got action, suspense, mystery, twists and turns and some hot and sexy times during you will not be able to put this down!
I give you 5 stars for creativity....you’ve gotten a little more adult with your story, cool, you added in Jackson & Bettina, very cool, along with Tegan. I deduct 2 stars for making your female lead such a bumbling moron, and because you slipped backed into the same old formula of black jeans, soul mates, same tired expressions, same hot guy, etc, etc
When I saw that this is a stand alone Coven book I didn't really expect it to relate to the rest of the books in any major way. However, after a few chapters I realized I was wrong. It ties in to a part of the Academy Magic season and definitely leads into Fae Magic. I read The Rogue Witch immediately before this and am so glad I did as I was able to recognize the character's names. Now I really can't wait for the Rotten Witch to be released!!
I have more than a few issues with it. Maybe my standards are impeccably high and I'm awfully unfair but I have many issues with this. Many. While, I suppose, in part it is my own fault. I knew what sort it was from the cover. But, I am optimistic (no not really but I try) and thought 'well, it's a really short standalone, what's the worst that could happen?'
My entire being was insulted within an inch of it's life, that's what. Honestly, I even started a list but stopped because it was getting too annoying.
Alright, being polite, I suppose I could say that while the plot was horrendous, because there wasn't really one and our mc was a very passive character, the main reason this was a 1 star was the fact that worldbuilding was so terribly done. The amount of times 'british' things are used that are undoubtedly not british, or just clearly put in to make it seem british is almost inumerable. This was all the more apparent because I am a british person.
So, here are the life-or-death issues I faced: - she repeatedly said 'well, I'm british, so...' which REALLY pissed me off because what the actual hell was going on there? I got huge 'trying to be british' vibes and it did NOT work. 'We were British, but my mother was a hugger.' That is an actual line from the book and similar lines were used SO many times I actually had to go cry. Apparently, we don't cry in public. Really. She goes 'I was british, so I didn't cry in public (etc)'
- “Blasphemy. Here, try this.” She waved her hands in front of her and that rainbowcolored smoke billowed in a little tornado between us. When it vanished, there was a saucer with a round golden piece of dough. She handed me a knife that had definitely not just been there. “Biscuit. With butter. You’re welcome.” I bit my bottom lip and took the knife, then cut myself a piece. The sound that came out of me as my tastebuds exploded sounded far too much like Shelly this morning. My cheeks warmed. “Your lot probably would’ve won the war faster had you just shared some of these.” No. Wtf. American biscuits suck, have you ever tried a digestive? A CUSTARD CREAM? There is nothing better than a custard cream. They also call scones biscuits, which is ridiculous. A star was subtracted for that abomination because no british person would actually say american biscuits are better.
-Harry Potter was referenced at least ten times. I cried. Truly. “You sounded just like Arthur Weasley just now.” Oh my bloody hell, were you really?” There were more, that I didn't document. But I distinctly remember mentions of Harry at Ollivanders. We do not reference Harry Potter every few moments.
-There weren't even enough mentions of tea (GOOD tea) or the bad weather we have. True, the heatwave this year nearly killed me but school started again and oh wonderful it rained again. Though I do like the rain.
-'blimey' 'nutter' 'do you fancy a' 'shag' 'bollocks' 'wanker' We use this language but not 24/7. Yes, I do talk like that. But it was NOT done well in the book.
- She spelt colour without the u. You cannot write a book set in britain and misspell colour.
- The plot was cheesy and dumb, probably because there WASN'T any plot. At all. She gets magic, meets her soulmate, prepare for war, find information - but it wasn't an actual plot. It was just a lot of things happening. It was weird.
But that was how I spent the time I was supposed to be doing math. Have a nice day and thanks for listening to me rant.
Definitely press that button and add this book to your basket to enjoy a impressive and extraordinary new fantasy book. This story flows brilliant, therefore I always knew without a doubt what direction and place each character was participating in and gosh how real did this feel. The realism in the world felt like I hadn’t even left my own and suddenly I felt like I had received a jolt like Chloe after a devastating discovery that completely changed the world she lived in and scared her out of her wits. Her family history was full of a history she had never known about however thinking she had been told everything she keeps getting shock after shock the whole way through the storyline. Then there’s Malachi ! and boy did I swoon myself at this man but alas he wasn’t destined for me I had a little cry and handed him over to his fated mate...that’s it ! I’m not spilling anymore as I don’t want ruin a second of your enjoyment of this book. Apart from a little teaser that involves the Coven !! (I love these bunches of guys) if you have never read any of Chandelle LaVaun’s Books I certainly recommend everything I’ve ever read but if you want to learn more about The Coven then start at the beginning of her Elemental Magic Series first, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed as like The Rose Witch they are filled with Witches, Magic, revelations, Quests and romance however they have battles, death and regret plus evil with much more packed into this fantastic fantasy series, so much so that to me they are time stealers and time stopping and definite nail biters as they take over your mind, body and soul. Chandelle LaVaun has produced this stand alone book with immense creativity and imagination but be warned her writing is addictive
This is a stand-alone book in The Coven series. It is a nice refresher in the series as it deals with an older couple vs. Teenagers.
Chloe and Malachi make me feel all warm and gooey inside! From their very first encounter, I knew I was going to fall head over heels for them.
Chloe is a Lancaster but is pretty much the only family member who doesn't know about magic - that is, until her magic comes bolting out of her. This book is intertwined with the last book in Academy Magic. We get to see a different point of view from the ball that is thrown in Jackson Lancasters' honor for restoring the family line of magic.
We get to see glimpses of the Coven, but not much besides encounters with Tegan. She is so wonderfully mysterious and almost wicked. (Even though she's a good guy)
Malachi.... oh Godess, where do I start. Prince of Hell? That alone just makes my mouth water. Son of Lucifer? Can't tell if I should run away or toward him. && that is exactly how Chloe felt.
I LOVEEEEEEEEEE Chandelles' explanation and description of Lucifer. It is such a unique pov, and I absolutely applaud her for thinking this way.
There are lots of twists and turns in this book, more so than the others. There are so many good plot twists that make your head turn! But best of all, I love the connection and banter between Chloe and Malachi.
Definitely recommend reading this book, as well as the entire Coven Series.
This COULD have been a good book, but as a southern American married to a posh Englishman I have problems with Lavaun’s research. In past books, her interpretation of southern women and the usage of “ma’am” is passing amusing as that is not how southern women speak BUT the butchering of a posh Lancaster who attends Cambridge with an affinity for Oxford’s inner and outer language and slangs is simply abhorrent. No research was done whatsoever. Has the author been to England? She does realize that all over there are different ways of speaking. She has what should be a POSH speaking main character speaking, swearing and NOT keeping calm as British do with a ragtag or horrid Cockney slang both inner and outer spoken. A 22 year old woman raised in a posh atmosphere at posh Uni’s would not be speaking or thinking like some common Cockney on the street shoveling mud about. This is the Dick Van Dyke of characters. Please stop stereotyping your English characters. A Posh upbringing would not result in how this girl speaks. It’s embarrassing, even to me! You have a great mind for stories but you are extremely lazy in your research. In a LOT of things, not just this either. When the accounter with the dinosaurs you had the frilled lizard spitting acid? Didn’t the author know this was disproved almost immediately after the FIRST Jurassic Park was released? Both the research and editing are wanting. Do better.

This book was unbelievably amazing. So freaking good. It exceeded anything I could have possibly imagined. Malachi and Chole's story will have you laughing and cheering for them. This book is ment to be a stand alone novel which it totally is, however I definitely suggest reading the series to have a thorough understanding. The book starts off with Chole having a day from hell, a cheating boyfriend, and the stories the stories her grandma once told her coming to life. Mix that with a evil locket stuck on her neck and a hot as hell angel chasing her along with his demon dog and you've got ypurself a recipe for disaster for sure. But then our girl Tegan has to play a role to get things back on track. Chole learns that everything is not as it seems, and she and Malachi have a special part to play in the war with Lilith. This book is a must read. Grab to find out what happens.
This book was given to me as an ARC for my honest opinion

I'm confused. Is this a stand-alone novel, or Book 1 of another series? Does it depend how much people love it? Because I love it!
I have a soft spot for nerds, and Chloe is a nerd. Malachi is impressive, and their chemistry is off the charts. The action is pretty much non-stop. Chloe is your stereotypical mundane that suddenly discovers she has magic. She's more powerful than your average bear, of course, and you won't believe where she ends up!
There are references to other novels and previous Coven books to make things more fun for fans, but you don't need to read the other books first to love this one. Just be aware there's a spoiler in this book for a previous series. I don't think it would've ruined anything for me to read this one first, but if that might bother you, read the first two series first. You'll want to read them all eventually anyway. LaVaugn is too awesome to miss them.
An epic urban fantasy adventure story. Before warned. If you read this book you’ll become addicted to this world of magic fantasy and adventure. The coven is the leader ship of witches. Witches are not what you think. They were created to protect humanity from demons and evil. Angels yes angels from heaven. A special breed of humans were created to protect humanity. The Arcana or as you will read on the witches. Have magic and live among us and are there to protect the world from evil. You will find out there are many supernatural and mystical creatures that are real. This is a standalone story that you can read by itself but will introduce you to this world. There are a couple of other groups of books in this world that you need to read. You will not be disappointed but you will be in thralled and drawn into a world of magic and adventure. This could be A more adult urban fantasy that could rival Harry Potter. Check it out now.
Chole is Jackson’s cousin living in England. She walks in on her longtime boyfriend having sex with a neighbor’s daughter at his flat. Devastated, she flees the scene on foot and ends up at a bookstore owned by her family. A stranger and his giant dog pursue her. She escapes by jumping through a painting. Once she makes it to her parent’s home she discovers they are witches; their magic unbound when Jackson found Michael’s sword in a previous book. Not only that, but they are survivors from the Salem Witch trials in the 1600s. Magic crystal, party, Tegan, Malachi, Spot the hellhound, wham, bam, thank you ma’am, conveniently soulmates, scavenger hunt, Garden of Eden, angels. That about sums it up. Apparently Chole and Malachi will have a significant role in the upcoming battle with Lilith so I guess we’ll see them again.
Query: Chole takes back her apartment key from ex-boyfriend yet in a later scene her friend says she saw him at her apartment. How did he get in?

3.75/5 I felt this book was a let down from previous books in the series. This is a stand alone book. Given the name I had hoped roses would have something to do with her magic. We did meet a few characters from other books briefly. There was a quest and we did have to follow clues. It just felt like we moved very quickly and there were several parts where I wanted more information or more interaction and just didn't get it. I wanted to know more about the main character's mother and family. Also, the character of Roland served his purpose but was then brought back in to the story but it didn't amount to anything. If the reason was for the first kiss that was coming anyway. Recommendation: This isn't a bad book and if you like the world and series this is worth a read. It is decent YA Urban Fantasy. However, even if I decide to reread the series I will probably skip this installment.
This is the first standalone novel set in Chandelle's Coven Saga world and takes place shortly after Jackson & Bettina return from their quest for Michael.
Chloe grew up a mortal hearing stories of magic all her life, but dismissed the as pure fantasy...she was after all a scholar and thrived on facts. All it takes is a little push from a friend to take a chance for her well structured world to begin to crumble, throw in a touch of newly woken magic, an extraordinarily protective fallen angel, and sparks are sure to fly!
Malachi and Chloe are a wonderful addition to the Coven family and I hope to see more of them in future installments. As always this book, and author, do not disappoint, but leave the reader wanting more!
Good standalone but was distracted by the British narrator
The main character of this book is British and it’s written in the first person from her but it is obvious that the author isn’t British. Maybe it could’ve got away with it if it wasn’t the narrator but the things she said are not things we say and got sayings wrong. Also the word ‘bloody’ was in every sentence and even though we say it, we don’t use it that frequently. Shame because it distracted from the plot which was nice and romantic. Not sure whether I’m just being too picky and probably isn’t noticeable to anyone else who isn’t British. Would definitely read other books by the author with American characters.
Can’t say I particularly enjoyed this book, which is an absolute first for anything about this coven series. And I’ve read them all to date. I did enjoy the things we learned about the Lancasters, and how this will work in with the future events. But for basically the whole book, Chloe got on my nerves in a major way. I also had to keep reminding myself she wasn’t 5 years old, even though that’s how she acted. Couldn’t even get to worked up over Malachi, although the history there is really interesting. I love this author’s work, and have no reservations recommending her work at all. This particular book just didn’t really do it for me. It does play in with the coven series, and explains a lot of things, though. So am glad I read it.
This isn't my cup of tea. I just don't dig fast burn, insta love (we are talking one day here) where the h is just ok with everything she just went through? I mean like her whole world changes (literally in some moments) and she finds out she is a witch with magic, finds out about other paranormal, starts falling through paintings, has smoke hands, meets a hellhound and falls in love with a fucking angel in like 48 hours? There were a lot of convenient plot points to push this along.
It sucks cause I think the painting ideal was kinda cooland hadn't seen seen done so I was super keen but then it was Wham Bam we are soulmates. It just seemed so implausible that anyone would be ok with everything that happened.

The book says it’s ‘a novel set in The Coven saga but is designed to be read as a stand-alone’ but I really felt I was missing out on something the entire time I was reading it. So while it might be a fine stand-alone novel for anyone familiar with the series, I really wish the author would have made more of an effort to build the world in such a way, so that those of us who were unfamiliar with the series didn’t feel so disconnected to it.
That said, it wasn’t a bad story and it showed a lot of promise. It was a fairly easy read and I might have actually scored it higher, if it weren’t for two things. One, they fall in love in the space of a day. Really? Why? It’s a little insane and I don’t usually mind insta-love stories. By the end of the book there’s a possible believability to why he might love her and yes, he saves her life a few times but…meh. I needed more. I needed more. Two, they follow clues supposedly left/created six hundred years ago and one of them leads them to Las Vegas. Again. Really? Had it lead to a specific artefact, I might have bought it. It makes me wonder if there’s something I’m missing, yet again. Was any of the stone authentic the time period? No idea. But that seriously soured me on the story from that point on.
From start to finish this story draws the reader into a relatable turned magical adventure. Chloe is 22 and her whole life changed before her eyes, and not just once. The same literary magic is infused into this story that enchants the reader. There is such rich lore and world building that it will you in awe with every new surprise that’s unveiled. There are previous series in the world of this standalone and another that happens at the same time, but it is perfectly crafted so that you don’t have to read them to understand this one. I can’t wait to see more of the characters from this story as the story continues on in The Coven: Fae magic!
Another amazing, heartpounding, mystical romantic adventure by Chandelle. Although the story intertwines with key characters and events we already know from the Elemental Magic Series, the Academy of Magic Series and Saffie's story, this tale also strongly stands on its own. Chloe's gifts are wonderful and fascinating but frightening for her, and I hope we get more in this series as she explores and learns how to work with her special gifts. This story was just what I needed to escape my stressful week. Recommend Readers plan when they begin The Rose Witch, because once I started reading, I could not put the book down. Highly recommend.
This book is an 18 year old and up book. Chandelle doesn't usually write a stand alone book that is part of her seasons. This one she included a sex scenes that was pretty graphic, she usually only does soulmate sex scenes. I thought after the shocking scene at the beginning that the rest of the book was great. The steamy soulmate scenes & the fact that Chloe had to work so hard to contain herself epic. Malachi was just to hard to resist and totally hot. I loved the relationship between Malachi & Chloe. Her intro to magic was epic. I just have to say I would have asked the man what he wanted. She really jumped to conclusions.
Every time I think I couldn't love a book or series more, Chandelle releases another installment, and I fall in love all over again. Every new character is my favorite. The world she has created is truly magical, and the story, well, words can't describe how amazing it is. Together with the fluidity of the writing, these books have become my #1 favorite of everything I've ever read in my lifetime, and that is in the multiple thousands at the least. There really is nothing better. I can't wait to see Chloe and her Prince of Darkness in the upcoming books, how the world evolves from here. You hit it out of the park again Chandelle. Thank you!
