Age appropriate vocabulary and explanations of several nocturnal animals. I never realized jaguars were night animals. Bush babies and badgers, less common nocturnal animals in kids readers, are also included.

Book Title: Night Creature by Wade Cooper

Book Description: In The Night Creature, facts about several different animals are in prose form. The expository structure is description.

Focus for my mini-lesson:
• Cooper’s writing is in prose, so I would emphasize to the students how the author wrote about animals in a way that is interesting. The writing hooks the reader because it is catchy, not boring. Although first graders may not be ready to write poems like that, I would emphasize the importance of making our writing more interesting.

Teach: 1st Grade CCSS Connection –
1.W.2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.

• The students will complete a graphic organizer (a tree map) for select animals.
• The students will write and illustrate about 2 of the animals using the tree map as a springboard for writing sentences.

Learning outcome:
The students will be able to complete a graphic organizer with assistance, if needed. Using the graphic organizers, the students will be able to write an information booklet about the select animal.

When the sun goes down and we are all tucked safely into bed, the night is filled with all sorts of creatures. Many of these animals come out to find food. What do they eat? How do they manage to see at night? How do they protect themselves? The answers are fascinating.

Night Creatures is rated a level two developing reader book which equates to a first or second grade level. There is some new vocabulary and the sentences are a little longer. The entire book is 367 words long. This would be a popular choice in any elementary school library.

Night Creatures is filled with all sorts of interesting facts. I loved the beautiful colour photographs. At the end of the book is a fun “What do you know” quiz.

This was a very good Level 2 reader. It was basic enough that a beginning reader could read on their own (although in some of the smaller paragraphs telling about true life facts it may get harder) This book has wonderful pictures of the animals they are talking about. The rhyming lines tells about the charactors and ways of each animal. Each page has small paragraphs of "Did you know" facts. In the back of the book has key words and a Dictionary. So you can use this book as a Science lesson in addition to a 'fun' book just to read. Using the key words as spelling words etc. Wade Cooper has written several 'fact' books that are level 2 readers I'm gonna try and get them for my special needs sons and my 2 year old granddaughter. He did a good job on this book.
