Four paws up for this totally adorable romcom. A relatable heroin, a stunning setting, a lovable puppy, sizzling chemistry and a gorgeous man. What more can you want from your romcom? Becky needs a little break from her life so she applies to housesit a cottage in the Lake District, and bonus the cottage comes with a dog. The only thing the homeowner asks is that becky does not let anyone under any circumstances touch Bella, the dog. Simple enough, right? Well it is for about 15 minutes until Ash shows up with his piercing blue eyes, delicious smile, and an obvious connection to Bella. I am certain you know where this is going, and yes it is somewhat predictable. However there is so much whimsy and charm in this delightfull tail wagging tale.

I really liked both Becky and Ash and could not figure out how they could have possibly been with their previous significant others. The setting sounded absolutely divine and I think it was featured perfectly in the story. But the true star of the show of course was Bella. She was so precious and so funny. If I didn’t already have two dogs I’d probably think I needed one. Another fun feel good story from this wonderful author.

Favorite Quotes:

There can only be one thing that can beat a buff man in uniform, and that’s one who’s taken half of it off. Oh my giddy aunt, as Mum would say. Or just cor! Okay, call me shallow, sexist and guilty of stereotyping. I don’t care. I’m allowed. He looked like he was in the SAS, but with a better haircut.

I kidded myself that Teddy and I could make a go of it, even though he was a reptilian control freak who should be cast in a weird episode of Dr Who where he will be zapped and get his just rewards.

I think my lady parts have become turbocharged. That hasn’t happened before either. They’ve been pulsating like strobe lights at a rave and I feel totally drained. In a very nice way.

My Review:

This was a fun and enjoyable read, but then Zara Stoneley is a sure bet for entertaining, wryly amusing, and highly engaging tales which she generally casts with realistically flawed and quirky characters. The storylines were crisply written in the first-person POV of Becky, an original and authentic character who was well-intentioned and had a good heart but she was also a bungler, a screw-up, inattentive, impulsive, and easily distracted. She didn’t think things through and made irresponsible errors in judgment but thankfully, she was also endearingly kind and creatively gifted. While I wanted to smack her a few times as she was more than a bit heedless and exasperating, she was also totally knowable, and I adored her.

I loved this book, it was funny and very warm to read. It brought back very many happy memories of holidays spent in the Lake District with my family years ago, although this book doesn’t mention the fact that it rains a lot up there!! But it did mention the gingerbread at Grasmere which I do agree is the best I’ve ever tasted. I loved this book and I would be interested in reading more by this author. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

I deliberated for a while whether this was a 3-star or a 4-star read for me. I was swinging like a pendulum because on the one hand, I was really chuckling over the opening chapters and found Ash’s final acts of romance very sweet and endearing. However, I do feel like the story “went off the boil” and it lost momentum, despite Bella’s canine energy. Romance won instead of the narrative, reminding me of how much I laughed at the start of the book.

One thing is for sure, Stoneley opens this book with fun and energy. Becky’s drive through the country roads are filled with peril and it does not help that she is running late to meet with the owner of a beautiful Lake District cottage who also needs her dog looking after whilst she is away. City-girl Becky appears out of her depth and this is continued further with her first encounter with Georgina’s house and the lovable doggie, Bella. It turns out that Bella is a prized possession: helping Georgina be on top of her Insta-game and garner followers and freebies. Yet, as Becky gets to know this energetic animal, she cannot help but fall in love this with cute and excitable dog.

This is what really captured my imagination. When Becky starts to explore her surroundings on her walks with Bella, I could vividly picture the Lake District scenery. I especially loved the reference to the famous Grasmere Gingerbread – my mouth was watering from memories of tasting this delicious treat! I felt as relaxed as Becky and this is reflected in the narrative as Becky realises that the life she has put on hold in London is not who she truly is. Becky desires to be more like herself which is ironic considering the false reality that Bella’s owner, Georgina, is portraying on social media.

On the flip side, I did think that the narrative really slowed once Stoneley had established the plot direction. I felt bemused by the “dog-napping” element of the story and could not connect with the Ash-Bella-Georgina triangle. It felt too far-fetched and I was bored by the repeated scenes of Becky fearing that Ash had taken off with the dog. In my opinion, it felt like the same thing was being described, just in a slightly different setting each time. This left me feeling bored and desiring the comedy that had opened the book.

Bella is definitely a memorable dog! I really enjoyed reading the birthday party scene and thought this was really imaginative and entertaining. I grew to despise Georgina and my opinions were justified when she finally makes an appearance in the novel. This all happens as more of Georgina and Ash’s past comes to light, leaving Becky in more of a difficult situation. It is clear that she loves Bella, it is clear that she has feelings for Ash, and it is even clearer that she adores being in the Lake District. How can she keep all of these desires, whilst also holding down her job as an artist/illustrator?

I wished that the narrative contained the flair and enthusiasm that Bella brings to each chapter. Although I am definitely a cat-lover, it was difficult not to smile at Bella’s antics. She becomes the glue that holds many relationships together, genuine or otherwise, and I think it is her personality that brings the story together. I only wish that the cover had reflected that Bella is a black dog?!

This is a good romantic read, but definitely not my favourite. Some of Ash’s romantic gestures are really sweet, but I did find the dog conflict a little annoying. Setting it in the Lake District was certainly picturesque for Becky and readers alike and I think this helped to add to the romantic isolation that the protagonist finds herself in.

With thanks to Harper Collins, One More Chapter, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am excited to be taking part in the #BlogTour for Zara Stoneley's delightfully romantic THE DOG SITTER.

Ok, I admit, it was the title that first drew me to this book without having read anything of the premise because being a dog lover it was surely a given that I would therefore enjoy it...wouldn't I? Strangely enough, I did. Thoroughly. Although romance chick lit is not my usual genre it was a little of the beaten path of the historical fiction and psychological thrillers I generally devour. But there was something completely endearing about being a dog sitter...in the beautiful Lakes District. Handsome musclebound SAS/gardener/woodchopper was indeed a bonus. But at the mention of Poldark, that's it, all I could see then was Aidan Turner and those gorgeous locks and sensuous eyes strapped out in his Poldark coat...shirtless, of course!

But...I digress...back to the THE DOG SITTER!

What a delightful opening chapter! We delve headlong into Becky's journey to the Lakes from the more civilised London to which she's accustomed, and here she battles lorries leaking liquid cow-dung, tractors flinging straw and she was daft enough to leave her window open letting it all in! Haha...granted her air con was on the blink so I can understand that...but oh, what an amusing monologue it was. Added to that, she had an irate self-obsessed Georgina on the phone demanding where she was, all the while dealing with the sights, smells and goo of the country coming through her window. I found myself chuckling from the first few pages.

But it didn't stop there...no. Becky's rants to herself were amusing to read as she talks herself in and out of amusing and embarrassing situations.

However, I feel I must mention the star of the show here...Bella. What an absolute delight she is, clever, friendly and oh so bloody funny! I could actually see her zooming all over the yard, the house, the furniture... If you've never seen a dog with zoomies, you are seriously missing out! They are hilarious! Of course I am a person who prefers dogs to people so I can therefore appreciate their unique personalities.

So Becky is meant to be house and dog sitting at this gorgeous palatial Lake View Cottage for Insta influencer Georgina and makes the long journey from London to the Lake District. After finding a sitter for her own poky little flat, she sets off early and arrives late...thanks to the snotty satnav woman leading her through country lanes laden with lorries spewing out liquid cow poo and tractors dispelling hay. Becky turned up looking like she'd been dragged through a dirty stinking hedge backwards so was thankful to find Georgina had already left and would therefore not see her in this state. Georgina, though, had left her a load of instructions in the form of lists detailing everything from locking the house up to not letting her ex step foot inside, as well as all the instructions for Bella's social diary.

Becky had mistakenly thought Bella was just a dog that she'd bee looking after. She was wrong. Bella is a cute but cyclonic cockapoo that is the canine face of Georgina's Instagram. So when she opens the door before reading all of the instructions, she did not expect to be met with a whirlwind that flew past her at the speed of knots and zoom around the garden and into the shrubbery till she was out of sight. And then to make matters worse, Georgina video calls from the airport in the midst of the chaos. As she relays her most important instructions once again, she reiterates that Becky MUST NOT under any circumstances let her ex go near Bella, set foot in the house or even speak to him at all! Apparently, he is out to dog-nap her back and will try anything.

And so we come to the ex. The SAS-slash-gardener-slash-woodchopper that Becky has imagined him to be from the sneaky pic of him on Georgina's Insta account. As Becky is frantically trying to find the zooming Bella whilst attempting to appease a slightly flustered Georgina on the phone, the very object of Becky's fantasies stands in the open doorway holding onto a wriggling Bella who is excitedly kissing his face. Georgina takes one look at him and screams at him whilst Becky just stands there covered in cow-dung and a wisp of straw in her hair. The picture painted was somewhat amusing.

The ex is Ash James...a swoon-worthy guy befitting of the delectable Ross Poldark (in the form of Aidan Turner, of course). Georgina might see red at the very thought of him but Becky sees lots of lurid fantasties involving him. Bella is apparently in love with even if her owner is not and soon Ash starts popping up at the oddest moments, attempting to lure Bella into his clutches no doubt. But Becky has been told he's the enemy and to stay away from him. But it's a bit difficult when he keeps finding excuses to turn up!

It isn't long before Becky starts to feel completely relaxed at at ease in the beautiful scenery of the Lake District. She came here in the hope of putting some distance between her and her controlling ex who not only dumped her but sacked her as well. Up until recently she has lived her life trying to please Teddy and letting go of what she really wants. No one in her family, but her father, liked him and saw right through his snobbery from the start. Becky only wished she had too...but now she has. And now she is in the beautiful Lake District ready to reignite her inspiration and paint what she really makes her happy. Animals. Scenery. Nature. Magical ponies. That's what makes her happy. And it's here that she finds it again. In the breathtaking scenery, the waterfalls, the lake, the flora and fauna...and most of all, in Bella.

But it seems Bella comes as part of a package...with the handsome and somewhat delectable Ash. And what ensues is an entertaining and sometimes hilarious tale as Becky finds her inner inspiration to be who she really wants to be and paint what she really wants to paint.

I have to add, the descriptions of the scenery was simply beautiful. I live on the other side of the world and have never stepped foot in the UK, let alone the Lake District, but I could see it's beauty and natural wonders through Becky's eyes.

There is so much fun and silliness in this book it is difficult not to laugh at Bella's antics, as well as Becky's narration and enjoy the entertaining read that THE DOG SITTER is. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did but Bella really was the star here, hands down. There was a time early on that I started to get a little weary of Becky's sexual obsession of Ash...the woman sounded like a sex starved nymphomaniac at times...lol Although admittedly, the quick witted way she described it all it was quite amusing.

THE DOG SITTER is truly an entertaining read that I enjoyed more than I anticipated. It is fun, amusing and delightful in many ways. Not my usual genre but a definite feel-good read, nonetheless. And as no dogs were harmed or died in this story, it makes it an even better read for me.

Terrific rom-com read that will make you laugh out loud.

ahh i'm so disappointed in this book. WHAT WAS EVEN GOING ON???

A lot of the elements were extremely cliched, and the author tried way too hard to make one character "the villain", and it honestly made me uncomfortable.

if you like being confused, read this. there is also NO ROMANCE WHATSOEVER.

ALSO IM PRETTY SURE THE DOG IS BLACK SO WHY IS THERE A WHITE DOG ON THE COVER HUHHHHHHH

Such an incredibly amusing opening chapter, I was giggling from the first few pages.

And Bella, what an absolutely gorgeous dog she is, and so so clever and friendly.

Becky is meant to be dog sitting and house sitting, to look after Bella, but as she arrives she needs to be extra careful not to let Georgie's ex Ash go near to Bella. He is apparently out to dog nap her back, and she has been forbidden to even speak to Ash!

And what a handsome, swoon worthy guy Ash is, it's not wonder Bella is always happy to see him, and why Becky is having all sorts of thoughts about him, even though she has been told he is the enemy!

Becky has taken on this dog sitting job in the hope a break in the Lake District will reignite her inspiration for her art, she is a talented illustrator and cover designer, but her own ex was a nasty piece of work and her self believe and confidence in her work is at an all time low.

The Lake District scenery is gorgeous and everything is described so so well, and I loved Becky and Bella going on walks and what wildlife they may come across.

If you are looking for an entertaining story featuring a hot guy, gorgeous dog, slightly delusional person, and a character who gains in confidence then this is the one for you. It's an incredibly pleasurable read, with moments to make you giggle, and gasp!

Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

A fun and quick read about following your heart, believing in love, and being true to who you are The Dog Sitter follows Becky, a funny and smart woman who is floundering a bit. After a shocking break-up and job loss, Becky needs to reevaluate her goals and desires. She’s also looking for a little inspiration. So, she takes a job as a house and dog sitter at a remote home in the beautiful Lake District where she can focus on herself. Little does she know, her new job isn’t as relaxing as it seems, and Becky finds herself caught between two exes bickering over dog ownership.

Becky is a wonderful protagonist. She has a great sense of humor, and I love her quick wit. Her thoughts when exercising are hilarious (and realistic), and even though her life isn’t where she wants it to be, she still has a positive outlook. Throughout the book, she takes charge of her life, reignites her creativity, and begins to realize her true potential. Becky is creative, smart, and relatable, and I love that she takes the steps to regain her confidence and sense of self.

The romance is fantastic, and Ash sounds like a total hunk! I love Becky’s thoughts when she first meets him and the comical way she handles herself when around him. They meet under uncomfortable and awkward circumstances, but their relationship grows into a wonderful romance. The more Becky and Ash get to know and understand each other, the stronger their bond becomes. I love their chemistry, and how cute Ash is with the adorable Bella.

This review wouldn’t be complete without discussing Bella, the cute and spunky whirlwind of a dog that Becky is taking care of. Bella is so charming and adorable; it’s no wonder she’s an Instagram hit! I adore this rambunctious pup and love the levity and positivity she brought to Becky’s life. Bella is just the distraction Becky needs, and the constant dog disasters and mishaps are hilarious!

I enjoyed this charming and entertaining story, and it was the perfect read to pass the weekend! If you’re in the mood for a cute and light rom-com with charming characters, a beautiful setting, and an adorable dog, then this is the book for you. Thanks so much to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

This was a hugely enjoyable romp of ridiculousness and romance. I am embarrassed to say that along with Becky I too fell for the charms and hot bod of Ash James. I can only put it down to middle age and the menopause! Although funny, it was also quite predictable and in places had me cringing. Yet, why should I try and pretend that this chick lit did not light up something within me? Highbrow it ain't, but The Dog Sitter is hilarious, feel-good, welcome escapism. Throw in the canine element and the will they-wont' they tussle, and you end up with a loveable bundle of joy in the form of exuberant Bella, lacking in confidence Becky and SAS Ash!
As I read on, I really warmed to the characters and events, especially where Becky starts believing in her own artistic talents and makes independent decisions about her career. It sounded so idyllic, walking Bella, illustrating back at the house and trying and failing at not falling in love with Ash, that you would have to be in a super grumpy mood not to crack a smile over the antics that play out in the Lake District. I have very fond memories of the area and so the book transported me back to happier, fitter, more tranquil days and for that I thank the author immensely.

What a fun feel good book.
A little bit of frivolity, romance, and cute doggy love.

Becky our main character needs her life to go in a new direction so she takes on a job of dog and house sitting.
She’s recently been dumped by her boyfriend and they worked together .

I loved watching the story unfold and the delish Ash as the love interest.
Some slightly cringe worthy moments but on the whole lots of fun and laugh out loud moments.

The characters were well written and the location of the Lake District was perfect for escapism during lockdown.

It was a perfect rainy day read but I could equally see myself reading this on the beach.

A cute cockapoo named Bella was definitely the star in the book and if your a doggy lover you will adore this book.

Light hearted read with lots of fun elements.

Full of scenic walks and sweet, energetic dogs. Light and fun read!

Becky was a book cover designer and illustrator who lost both her job and her boyfriend in one go.

Trying to figure out what to do, she decided to accept a house/dog sitting position in Cumbria.

Being away from London made her realize her ex-boyfriend’s true nature and how he had distanced her from her family.

The house in Cumbria was stunning and Bella, the dog, was energetic but very lovely.

The only problem was the dog’s owner ex-boyfriend, Ash, who insisted the dog belonged to him and wanted it back.

She tried to stay away from him, but it was easier said than done. Ash not only had a gorgeous body but was even more beautiful on the inside.

But falling for her boss’s ex would prove to be quite complicated!

The couple had great chemistry, and I particularly enjoyed that they made each other comfortable and happy being who they were.

The Dog Sitter is a fun and romantic read full of scenic walks and sweet, energetic dogs. Light and fun read!

When I begin this book it really turned me off. So many curse words (specifically two word), were used over and over and it really annoyed me so much. I do not like to begin a book and not finish it, so I pushed through.

I read this in an e-book form, so I search those two words after encountering them a few times. One of them is used 56 times in the book and the other is use 37 times (if I counted correctly). I do not mind using curse words in books, if they are needed to establish a character's personality. For them to be used constantly, I think it is unnecessary. There are so many other words available to be used.

It seemed after maybe one-fourth of the book the characters were established so then those offensive words were not used as much. I was able to get more into the story and starting to enjoy it. I think the author did a wonderful job on scenery description. Also the development of the dog character was wonderful. I came to love Bella and her over the top enthusiasm for everything. I did enjoy reading the story of Becky and Ash as they got to know each other and became friends and then a couple.

I suppose the story was written for someone younger than me. While I did enjoy it after reading a very serious book prior to this, I think it just was a bit too modern for my taste.

I want to thank NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for giving me the opportunity to read the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.

Anything dogs, you know it’s for me, so you know I HAD to read Zara Stoneley's latest release.
The Dog Sitter is an adorable and fun read about Becky who really needs to get away from her life after being both fired AND dumped by an absolutely wretched boyfriend named Teddy. (Who frankly I’d like to punch after hearing the nasty things he said to Becky. But I digress…)
Before Teddy, Becky used to do a ton of house sitting, allowing her to travel and still work at her freelance job, so going back to that gig is the perfect thing for her right now. When the opportunity to take a job in the beautiful Lake District becomes available, you know she jumps at the chance. The best thing is that this job includes dog sitting duties, and Becky LOVES dogs but is unable to have one of her own because they are not allowed in her current apartment.
When Becky arrives at her fresh new gig, she had no idea she was going to run into the gorgeous hunk of a man Ash, but their first meeting doesn’t go so well because he is insisting that the dog she is watching is his own. Insert unexpected conflict/dilemma here. Little did she know her beautiful new set-up was not going to be the relaxing job she envisioned. Of course, to be expected, Becky and Ash develop a friendship, and you all can guess where this goes from there, even though Becky has insisted she is off men for now.
This book is an absolute fun and fast read that I couldn’t put down. I finished it in one sitting and was sad to say goodbye when I was done. It has everything needed for a feel-good read: jilted girl, beautiful escape, sexy hot guy, quirky drama, and an adorable dog named Bella with its own instagram account. What else do you need? This was certainly a delight to read, and Zara Stoneley has got another hit on her hands. Highly Recommend this one.

ℝ𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕒𝕤𝕖 𝕕𝕒𝕪 ℝ𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Dog Sitter by Zara Stoneley
🐝
After a break-up that ended-up in her getting fired from her main source of income as a book cover illustrator Becky decides to go house-sit in a quaint little town were she used to go when she was younger. However, her relaxing holiday takes another turn when she learn that someone, a very cute someone, is trying to steal the dog she is suppose to keep safe during the month her owner is gone for. Who does Bella really belong to? To the famous Instagrammer who hired her, or her ex, the gorgeous Ash.
🐝
I really had high hopes for this one. The synopsis and the cover had me really excited to read about this cute cockapoos. I loved the baseline of this story, the cover illustrator going dog-siting to find inspiration again, and finding herself in a war between who's the owner of the cute little pooch. However, the writing style was a little hard for me to get into. The women who hired Becky was portrayed as this very shallow, vindictive, and manipulative women who was using poor Bella for Instagram fame. So in addition of alienating "the ex" we also have a lecture on how fake everyone is on social media. I feel like this book had lots of potential but unfortunately it didn't do the trick for me.
🐝
I want to thank Netgalley, Amy Alves, and Harper Collins for the Advanced reader’s copy! As always all thoughts and opinions are honest and my own.

⭐⭐⭐✨/ 3.5 stars

This was a fun, fast and lighthearted romcom read – for those that are fans of UK RomComs, this one will definitely be one to check out.

The story is that of Becky who is, of course, hitting some personal life snags – loss of a job (that she didn’t really love) and a boyfriend (who was a complete jerk, and also her ex-boss) has her at loose ends. Luckily, she responds to and takes on the opportunity to do some house/dog sitting out in the Lake District. Of course, romcom shenanigans ensue as the pup in question is a highly energetic cockapoo and the person she is house sitting for fails to mention that her ex (her very handsome ex) and she are in a dispute over who’s dog it is.

This would definitely make for a great beach read – it was equally fun as a snow-y, house bound read for me 😉. The descriptions of the Lake District (and non-snow laden weather) made me long to visit myself. I enjoyed the dynamic between Becky and Ash, and of course the star of the show – energetic and sweet pup Bella. It was lovely to escape to the Lake District and get pulled into the funny (and at times cringe-y relatable) romcom moments.

If you are looking for a lighthearted, getaway with an adorable pup – this book has you covered!
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for the opportunity to read an early copy of this fun release. 😊

This book was really a sweet and funny romance that I enjoyed quite a bit. There was a lot in it that I really even needed to take to heart for myself. Like there is one point when Becky says something like how we should “be more dog”. And that is so true. My dogs are just so loving and even though I know that they probably should be mad at me for certain things, they don’t get that way. Well to be fair, I have dachshunds, and I think they do get back at me more than maybe other breeds of dogs might. But for the most part they are just so loving and they are usually a very good judge of character. And think how much less stressful our lives could be if we all would just “be more dog.”

There was a lot going on in this story, and even though it was clear that Ash really was the one that the dog Bella loved and probably who she belonged to, it was easy to see why Becky had to give Georgina the benefit of the doubt seeing as how she was the one who had hired her in the first place. Honestly I really liked Ash too. He was a great guy it seemed like, and really was fun.

It wasn’t just the romance in this one though, there was some great family bits and even just the message of doing what you like and not letting someone else decide for you, or even letting go of those things that are keeping you back even if you’re afraid you’ll never have anything like them again. If it’s over, it’s over, and you’ll never move on until you let go.

It wasn’t that long of a book really, because the story flowed, but because the dialogue is done with just apostrophes instead of quotation marks, I often had to reread parts to realize whether it was someone actually talking to someone else, or just Becky in her own head.

This is my third book by this author and I look forward to reading more in the future!

In The Dog Sitter, we meet our protagonist Becky Havers as she is leaving behind her life in London and heading for the delights of the Lake District. Both dumped and sacked in one fell swoop by boyfriend/employer Teddy, book cover designer and illustrator Becky has decided on the spur of the moment to sign up to house and dog sit for owner Georgina who is away on a business trip. In an area that holds fond childhood memories for her, the stunning Lake view cottage is to become Becky’s home for the next few weeks and she cannot wait to fulfill her temporary role. Desperate to arrive on time, Becky doesn’t bargain for her unreliable satnav, small winding country lanes, sheep, tractors and cow shit! The opening is hilarious and sets the scene for a slightly barking mad storyline brimming with canine love as well as the potential for an unexpected romance between two strangers.

Left with strict instructions on how to care for Bella, the cockapoo, paying particular attention to ensuring Georgina’s ex boyfriend doesn’t come anywhere near her beloved pooch, Becky falls head over heels for the crazy chaotic bundle of energy that is man’s (or in this case woman’s!) best friend. However keeping Bella within her sight at all times is no mean feat especially as there is one man determined to lure Bella away despite the high security surrounding the cottage. Setting her pulse racing, and probably readers alike, Ash is every inch the rugged handsome hunk Becky has previously spotted whilst stalking through Georgina’s Instagram account. Unsure whether he’s the gardener, wood chopper or an undercover SAS man she is surprised that HE is the ex boyfriend and potential dog napper in what becomes an ongoing battle for custody of their beloved pet. Poor unsuspecting Becky finds herself caught up in the middle of this tug of love war which features scenes that are often laugh out loud funny. As she gradually learns more of Georgina and Ash’s relationship and the woman behind all the perfect instagram posts, Becky’s loyalties are torn. Who should she side with? Her absent boss or this god of a man who could charm his way into Becky’s affections with his obvious love for Bella, his rippling biceps and his piercing blue eyes?

Taking in the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District with the opportunity for plenty of fresh air, outdoor exercise and a chance to rediscover the true artist within herself, this is the perfect place for Becky to be. Whilst immersing herself in country life she has a chance to re-evaluate her life, press the reset button and do whatever makes her happy as she endeavours to shrug off her unhappiness and her lack of self belief. Who needs the likes of controlling, manipulative, self centred Teddy when you can have the love of the fluffiest energetic bundle of joy that is Bella? An online sensation in her own right, Bella may be exhausting to take care of but this loveable crazy little dog is responsible for grounding Becky, injecting some much needed positivity into her life and encouraging her to throw herself into any challenge that comes her way, so that unsurprisingly Bella reaches the conclusion she’s maybe not the failure she’s always believed herself to be. In short, Bella proves that with a loyal doggy companion by your side life can be infinitely more rewarding in a storyline that is playful, uncomplicated and fizzing with energy. With plenty of doggy disasters and furry frolickings to melt every dog lovers heart this canine cutie most definitely steals the limelight. The romance and sexual chemistry between Ash and Becky may take a back seat whilst Bella delights her audience with her antics but you can guarantee sparks will fly as the storyline develops.

Combining a healthy dose of silliness, a touch of sauciness, a smattering of self realisation, oodles of puppy love and of course the obligatory dollop of romance this is an enjoyable tale (or going with the doggy theme should that be tail?) that is pure escapism. I defy you not to fall for the charms of both Bella and Ash, who is just the ideal candidate for the role of romantic hero, and not to feel the teeniest bit jealous of Becky who is the lucky woman destined to win their affections and a place in their hearts. Upbeat and uplifting I can recommend The Dog Sitter as a read that demands nothing else of you other than perhaps a love of our furry friends and a belief in romance and happy endings. My thanks as always to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read.

Book cover designer Becky Havers is leaving her life in London behind and going to the Lake District on a house – sitting mission. She’s just been dumped/sacked by her boyfriend/boss Teddy and decided the change of scenery will do her good. As luck would have it, she’ll be house – sitting in a place that means a lot to her, it’s filled with her childhood memories as she used to spend holidays there with her family. She’s excited to start her duties but right now she’s awfully late for her appointment with Georgina, the owner of the house (because of small winding lanes, cow shit and tractor – don’t ask!) and arrives to find a file with strict instructions on how to care for Bella, the lovely cockapoo, with the most important point of not allowing Georgia’s ex – boyfriend to come anywhere close to the dog! Oh no – will Becky manage? And who is this crazy ex?

The more I read, the more I liked this book and the direction it was taking – especially Becky. I must admit, at the beginning I couldn’t warm to her, there was a barrier between me and her, not sure why. She was, for me, a closed and withdrawn person, full of self – pity and uncertainty. But! As we were getting into the story and starting to learn about Becky and her background, about things that made her tick and her history, and then also seeing how much she was blossoming and daring herself more and more, how she started to appreciate herself and her work and talent, I also started to fall for her so much and in the end we were the best pals.
Also at first, the thing with Ask kidnapping Bella and appearing in disguise and everywhere Becky and the dog were, didn’t work for me so well, it just seemed a bit over the top and unrealistic. However, then, I got used to those actions and was as disappointed as Becky when I couldn’t spot Ash hiding somewhere in the bushes. Even better, we then also hear about his motivation and it made me go weak at my the knees and swooning…

The descriptions of the setting in the Lake District were beautiful, bringing the place easily to life and coming alive off the pages. The author couldn’t have chosen a more gorgeous place for this story. And it was not only a setting, I had a feeling that the „outdoors“ are really important for the author as lots of things happened in the nature – many of them verrry embarrassing!

The writing style was flowing, so easy to read – and it’s a compliment! Zara Stoneley is a great story – teller, she knows when to add either a funny line or something more serious. The banter between the characters was absolutely spot – on, I loved their ping pong conversations and sharp retorts.

„The Dog Sitter“ was a light and easy read, filled with Zara Stoneley’s hallmark humour and lovely animals – and she can for sure write about animals, beautifully capturing their nature and personalities. But it was of course much more than only that, because it was a story about finding yourself, getting your confidence back and making the right decisions. I really liked it, it was just what the doctor ordered, an uplifting and witty read that I can only recommend!

Thank you @onemorechapterhc for this ARC. Sharing my own, honest opinions.

This adorable cover caught my eye the moment I saw it on @netgalley. I’m so glad it did because it was just the light hearted, uplifting read I needed at the moment. Full of comedy, romance, the cutest canine and one heck of a stunning setting - oh and an intense craving for gingerbread!!

From the very first chapter, I found myself laughing out loud at the numerous situations the main character managed to encounter. The humor was non stop throughout the entire book and definitely reminded me of Bridget Jones. There were plenty of real moments with deep emotions too. The cast are all learning to find their own happiness without relying on others while also surrounding themselves with supportive people. Topics covered: bad break ups, toxic relationships, doing what brings you joy and sibling rivalry and the negative side of Instagram “influencers”. This was a story about rediscovering your confidence and ridding yourself of all of those things holding you back from being your own unique self.

Then there’s the romance!! Talk about chemistry. These two flirted through the majority of the book and it was pure perfection to watch. Ash just might be my new bookish boyfriend!! The scene where they are talking in the middle of the lake, in their own canoes was simply sigh worthy.

Want to know what I loved most about this book? The setting. The descriptions easily transported me to the other side of the world and had me constantly looking up images of the Lake District in England. The author shared how she was inspired to write about many locations based on her own travels and her admiration for the area was captured brilliantly.

We meet Becky who has been dumped by her boyfriend and now lost her job too. So she decides to get away from it all by taking a house sitting job in the lake district for a woman called Georgie who by the looks of Instagram her life looks perfect. Perfect house, boyfriend and gorgeous dog called Bella but is life really this perfect.

After a terrible smelly journey to the house she does not arrive in time before anxious Georgie leaves but have no fear she has left her plenty of lists for everything what to do in the house how to look after Bella and what is in the dogs busy social diary. Comes to something when a dog has a busier social life than you lol.

While Becky is trying to get to grips with things Bella starts acting crazy when she spots a man in the garden who is called ash and from what he says is Georgia's very gorgeous ex boyfriend.
She contacts Georgie to let her know that ash has arrived and would like to see Bella but she is adamant that he will not be allowed to see the dog ad he is a horrible person.

But Becky finds ash very friendly and unhelpfully very sexy what harm could it do to spend some time with him so he can see Bella.
After spending time with him at a doggie birthday party lol she decides he's not what Georgie described but can she stay away from him to keep Georgie happy by following her rules??
Can Becky not fall for ash???

Is everything as Georgie made out or not quite as Insta perfect as she would like people to believe.

I received an ARC of this book to read through NetGalley. All opinions are my own. The Dog Sitter by Zara Stoneley is a Women’s Fiction/Romance Novel. I seriously considered putting it down and not finishing it after reading the first chapter because it was trying too hard to be funny. Manure does not generally fly in your driver's side window, and if it does, you are not going to be able to keep driving. I decided to give the book a second chance because I’ve read and enjoyed books by Zara Stoneley before, and it turned out to be a lovely story about rebuilding your life when it comes crashing down and finding someone who loves you as you are. Book cover designer Becky Havers has had an anno horriblis so far, she’s been dumped, fired, and her ex, who was also her boss, has left her with little self-confidence regarding her art. Needing an escape to find a way to regroup, she takes on a housesitting gig in the lake district for Georgina and Instagram Influencer that comes with an adorable cockapoo named Bella. (Who is black and not golden like the dog on the cover) Handsome Veteran Ash James is also rebuilding his life after leaving the Marines and having his relationship end. One thing he is not prepared to give up is his dog Bella, and an instant attraction to Becky has him trying to figure out how to get his dog back and win the girl.
I enjoyed this book very much once I got past the non-sensical heavy-handed first chapter and recommend reading it. Steam Level: Medium. My fourth book by this author and I was looking forward to it as usual. What stood out for me was that the cover of the book was a lot more colourful than the 3 others I read. Those were white overall with red or pink. Maybe it was because it had a totally different theme than the others? I don’t know but I liked it. If I can just ask one question. Why is the dog on the cover white? It’s a detail, I know, but I like the cover to reflect the content as much as possible. 😉

The story itself then. For those who have read some of my reviews before know I am a dog lover. Put a dog in a book and you have already won we half over. 😊 The focus indeed was on the dog and it was lovely. The author described her behaviour very well and I could see my own dog in most of the situations. That made me smile because what’s more fun than seeing your dog enjoying himself and entertaining you at the same time.

About the characters. I liked Becky. She lost her belief in herself due to other people telling her off. I am glad she found the love for what she enjoys doing again.

Georgina is a bit of a wicked witch, but she too comes to terms with the past and is on her way to her happy ever after.

Ash … Good looking, sexy, but not always very kind to Becky in my opinion. He often had her in a state of panic and even though he explained afterwards, I did not think it was funny at all. But who am I? 😉

Anyway, I enjoyed the book and it made me smile several times. Maybe Ash did not win me over, but the dogs certainly did. 4 stars

Thank you, Zara Stoneley and Rachel’s Random Resources.

Firstly, I love the cover of this book, and was drawn to it immediately. Also when I read the description and saw it was set in the Lake District I was excited, I live about a 50 minute drive away and love nothing more that a day in Windermere or Ambleside.

Needing to escape her real life for a while Becky takes a job dog sitting in the Lake District, she though she would be going on beautiful walks and relaxing not walking into a custody battle over a cockerpoo, Bella or falling for one of her owners.

There were things I like about his book it was very funny in places, and anyone who knows or owns a dog or a cockerpoo to be exact will totally relate to Bellas cheeky and often naughty character. The description of Bella, and the other dogs natures were great the author obviously likes dogs and this shines through. Also the details about the area were great, and the beauty of the area shines through. That being said if it wasn’t for this and Bella and all her crazy antics,I don’t think I would have enjoyed it at all. I didn’t really like any of the characters in the book, I found them to be slightly annoying and their development and actions quite repetitive. Possibly overall a little too cheesy for my tastes.

Thank you to Netgalley UK for a ARC copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

My rating scale

Realising too early on that a book won't work for you when you were excited to read it is the worst. I wanted to dnf this WAAYYYY before the 25% mark, but I'm stubborn af and I like to give books a chance to change my mind. This book didn't even TRY.

Insta-love just ain't it for me and I KID YOU NOT Becky wanted to jump Ash's bones from the second she saw a photo of him on Instagram. I also found Ash's character really creepy with all the dog-napping thing and the always being RIGHT THERE. I didn't feel ANY chemistry between them. I felt so disconnected that I don't think I'd care if they didn't end up together. The author also tried too hard to make Georgina a villain. Sure, she was already annoying and highkey a control freak when she was away, but once she got back? OBNOXIOUS. MANIPULATIVE. DISRESPECTFUL. Not to mention that her HEA was unrealistic.

I ended up reading most of the non-dialogue parts diagonally because honestly I just wanted to be done with it ASAP. The only thing that did it for me (and is preventing me from giving this 1* tbh) was Bella, because let's face it, no other character was likeable enough or rememberable, and YET it still pisses me off that the dog on the cover is white and not BLACK. I know it's a minor mistake but DETAILS . ARE . IMPORTANT.

There is nothing worse when you feel like your world is falling apart. For Becky who just lost her boyfriend, who was also her boss, decides that a change of scenery just might help her figure out her next move and claim a little bit of herself back. Taking on a house sitting/dog sitting job was supposed to be a nice quiet change.

What she found instead was the gorgeous ex boyfriend of her house owner. While he claims the dog is really his, he is determined to steal the dog back.

Lots of shenanigans, an overzealous dog, lots of nature adventures all while Becky finds her creative inspiration and find herself. A light rom com read.

A warm and funny read with great relatable characters. I loved the relationship between Becky and Ash, and especially Bella, and found myself rooting for the two of them as the story unfolded. A real uplifting story which is a great escape.

This book was funny. My favourite character of the book is Bella. She is such a cute dog. I love the Lake District setting, it sounds beautiful. The romance between Ash and Becky didn't feel real. It started as an insta love / obsession which annoyed me. Despite that I enjoyed the book.

Brought back lots of happy memories of visits to the Lake District on holiday. Grassmere and the Gingerbread shop we’re the only places I remembered as it was a place we fell in love with too. A happy ending for them both and off course the little dog.
