Sean DeBevoise learned early on growing up in New York State that he was bound to be a man of honor. Hunting in the Catskill Mountains with his father, Sean learned about nature, focus, and ultimately, survival. During high school, he was a wrestler, and that's when he met Rachel, the woman who would ultimately become his wife and be the centerpiece for an unconventional tale. After the attacks of 9/11, Sean knew that his only course of action was to serve his country. Joining the Marines, he found a mental and physical challenge that he planned to excel at. Although he sensed the behavior and many things said by fellow Marines to be disturbing, he willingly deployed to Iraq where he encountered a war-zone that would rip his body to shreds. Taking four bullets including one to the head, Sean's life would never be the same, but it was the fact that all of this was at the hand of friendly fire that would provide the most crippling mental damage. Sean DeBevoise was nearly killed by his own Marines, and for reasons that are boggling to the outside mind. Putting the pieces together still today, Sean has come to realize that a dangerous web was woven between the US Marines, a hunger for honor, and jealously that traced all the way back to his family at home. Sean killed insurgents on that fateful day when he was locked in a warehouse and left to die by his own men. Returning home, the nightmare seemed to become even more horrifying. Although he has worked tirelessly to recover the use of his body and to reclaim his life from those who did everything in their power to take it from him, he still grapples with a mysterious story that the US military doesn't want you to know. This is Sean's story, and it's being told for the first time with unflinching honesty.
I battled with writing this for many days...I have no choice. As your ex sister in law who has known you since I was 9 years old, I can not speak on anything other than what I saw with my own eyes. What I do NOT appreciate is you putting a picture with me claiming I was celebrating anything OTHER THAN the fact that a man I respected and looked up to my entire life, was going to survive the traumatic injuries he sustained while overseas. I have never done anything but love and support you before and after everything that you have gone through. I have praised you and put you on a pedestal anytime I have shared your story with people in life. I was there during your recovery and never once was there a celebration for anything other than the strides you were making in your recovery! I wish you nothing but love and happiness in your life and hope whatever it was you are trying to accomplish with this gets accomplished but, I will ask that you please do NOT try and take innocent people down while doing so. I have never wronged you and you know that deep down. I do take pride in my image and who I have become as a woman so, I do not appreciate this at all.
first. Sean D. Was an 03xx TAD to 2nd Recon Battalion from 3/8 with the opportunity to try out for 0321. Due to poor military planning my platoon was short staffed and we pulled Sean from the training platoon to deploy to Iraq to serve as a point man for bravo 1. 2nd Recon Bn. 2nd Mar Div.
He was a silent professional [ until recently breaking character ] & his actions on 17 May 2006, an event that can be defined as the highest magnitude engagement I have ever survived, was nothing short of miraculous. I first hand witnessed his heroism killing 3 suicidal vest belt feed machine gunners hidden in a hardened position. By my accord he rated the Medal of Honor. [ I have witnessed 3 navy crosses ] 🔺🔺🔺
As for the book, I understand his injuries I understand the framework of his story. I hope he continues writing and my wife and I wish him the best in his future endeavors.
I live in NC near Southport where Sean DeBevoise gunned down a crowd of vacationers at a waterside restaurant. His crime led me to getting this book to read to see what happened to him and what made him do that heinous crime. For sure, he has brain damage and PTSD. And the tremendous struggle he has had to recover. I'm hoping his trial will bring his reasons to air. I also wonder if what he wrote about his combat history being stalked by his platoon members and the effort to kill him is true? Time will tell. I hope his motive comes out.
The true story of what happened to Sean DeBevoise in May of 2006 in Iraq and thereafter is shocking. Surviving the unimaginable and exceeding the expectations of his recovery through sheer will and perseverance, Sean's story needs to be told and shared. Thank you for your service Sean, you are a true inspiration.
