Miss Mary Investigates #1

Death of a Clergyman

Rate this book
Mary Bennet has always been the quiet sister, the studious and contemplative middle child in a busy family of five. She is not interested in balls and parties, and is only slightly bothered by the arrival of the distant cousin who will one day inherit her father’s estate. But then Mr. Collins is found dead, and Mary’s beloved sister Elizabeth is accused of his murder. Mary knows she must learn whatever she can to prove Elizabeth innocent of this most horrible crime, or her sister might be hanged as a murderess!

Alexander Lyons has made a pleasant life for himself in London, far from his home village in Scotland. He investigates missing documents and unfaithful wives, and earns an honest living. Then one day Mr. Darcy walks into his office, begging him to investigate the murder of Mr. Collins and to prove Elizabeth innocent of the crime. It seems like a straightforward enough case, but Alexander did not count on meeting a rather annoying young woman who seems to be in his way at every turn: Mary Bennet.

As the case grows more and more complicated, Mary and Alexander cannot stop arguing, and discover that each brings new insight into the case. But as they get close to some answers, will they survive the plans of an evildoer in the midst of quiet Meryton?

What broke in a man when he could bring himself to kill another? ~ Alan Paton

A murder mystery takes the center position in “Death of a Clergyman” while the canon Pride & Prejudice love stories move slightly off stage. The stabbed body of Mr. Collins has been found in a stream next to some of Elizabeth Bennet’s personal belongings. Since the death occurred following Elizabeth’s refusal of the clergyman’s proposal and since the murder weapon belonged to Elizabeth, she is the obvious suspect.

Fitzwilliam Darcy has returned to London but he is distressed to learn of Elizabeth’s danger. He hires Alexander Lyons, the clever Scot who tracked down his missing sister in the first of this series, to find proof of Elizabeth’s innocence.

Mary Bennet is equally distressed at the murder accusation. She has always considered herself as the “invisible” Bennet. People speak candidly in front of her because they don’t realize she is present. During an errand at Netherfield, she overhears a discussion of another mystery. Two mysteries in sleepy little Meryton! How can they be unconnected?

Alexander and Mary clash initially but soon learn to work together. Darcy is involved in the action more than Elizabeth, who must be downplayed in order to make Mary look extra clever.

The book is labeled as the second in a series of mysteries featuring Mary Bennet and Alexander Lyons but I will point out that each story is complete. I would recommend reading the first, “The Mystery of the Missing Heiress” because it is a good short story, but “Death of a Clergyman” contains enough background info to be standalone.

This is a wonderful Pride and Prejudice-inspired mystery that brings Mary Bennet out from the woodwork and into the forefront. Being the invisible Bennet sister has its advantages, as Mary has become an observant studier of human nature, hearing and seeing more than anyone in her family suspects.

The morning after the Netherfield ball, her sister Elizabeth refuses Mr Collins's proposal of marriage, then escapes the cacophony at Longbourn for a walk while her mother and Mr. Collins argue with Mr. Bennet. Eventually, Mr. Collins gives up trying to convince Mr. Bennet to compel his daughter to change her mind, and he also heads out the door. Later, Elizabeth returns, scratched and bruised, her garments torn and bloody, in obvious distress, and goes directly to her room.

It's not long before Sir William Lucas, the local magistrate, arrives with two constables to arrest Elizabeth for the murder of Mr. Collins. His throat had been slit. Elizabeth's knife (it has her initials on it) was found by the body with a sack containing some food and a book belonging to her nearby. It looks like an open and shut case against Elizabeth, despite her denials.

Fortunately, Mr. Darcy learns about the accusation, and he immediately brings Alexander Lyons, a very capable investigator, from London to clear Elizabeth's name. Mary does a bit of investigating of her own and learns a few things that she knows will be useful to Mr. Lyons in his investigation. However, he has a poor opinion of the gentry in general (Mr. Darcy being one of the rare exceptions) and assumes Mary is a typical pampered, empty-headed gentlewoman with nothing of import to offer - plus, her timing when she approaches him couldn't be worse.

As the plot develops, the mystery gets deeper and deeper, with various apparently unrelated factors that Mr. Lyons and Mary struggle to connect to the murder. It's a fascinating whodunnit, with most clues laid out clearly for the reader to consider. They lead to several potential suspects and also to an additional victim. I admit, I had no idea who the culprit would turn out to be or how the clues could possibly all weave together, but they do - very plausibly.

In the midst of this, the romance between Elizabeth and Darcy plays out nicely - obviously, in a different manner than cannon. The book's point of view switches alternately between Mary and Mr. Lyons, who have a mutual attraction when they aren't aggravating each other.

Another interesting plot element is that Mary begins to question her long-held spiritual tenets in the face of disturbing information she uncovers.

The writing is excellent. Ms. Everly keeps the pace moving briskly while still taking the time necessary to fully develop all her characters. Generally, their behavior is consistent with Jane Austen's, and Mr. Lyons is the only truly significant addition.

This is a planned series of mysteries. It seems that the next will be a variation of Emma with a new mystery for Mary Bennet (and, assumedly, Mr. Lyons) to solve. That'll be another must-read for me!

Highly recommend. Content is clean.

“CSI-Regency Style: Murder, mayhem, love!” quote from blog tour at ‘diary of an eccentric’

Rating: MA: mature-reader advised due to adult themes and acts of violence with graphic descriptions of murder, the murder scene, and the victims. Possible trigger warnings due to an assault attempt, and violence against women.

Mr. Collins was dead and the magistrate [Sir William Lucas] was attempting to charge a battered and bruised Elizabeth with his murder. Her penknife had been found near the victim as the weapon of choice. Fitzwilliam Darcy immediately hired a London investigator [featured in the prequel] to exonerate her and remove any and all stains against her name. That was the push that propelled our story forward. It was the goal and the complete focus of Fitzwilliam Darcy that his Elizabeth NOT hang. He simply could not imagine a world or his life without her.

This story had me up most of the night as ICNPID. I finally crashed when I started to nod off. The mystery was maddening as our author tossed clues right and left that I could not figure out. Everything felt important and there were many false trails that kept me distracted. Well done with those clues, Riana.

Strong class distinctions: There seemed to be a thread throughout the story that was a bit disconcerting. It involved the difference between the classes. La! With a Fitzwilliam Darcy disdaining all within his sight, we were very aware of the distinctions of class and station. Don’t even get me started on Caroline Bingley with her haughty nose in the air and her opinions on servants and tradesmen. We really see it in this story as our author pointed out the various levels. It was interesting to actually read the viewpoints of the servants as they tried to do their work among the quality. I felt for them and had a new understanding of their lives.

Alexander Lyons, the London investigator, felt the class differences the most. He fell within that gray area where he was neither fish nor fowl. Although he was highly educated, he was not of the landed gentry, therefore, he was not a gentleman. Lyons also provided work for hire which classed him as a tradesman. As you can imagine, Caroline Bingley was not kind. It also affected the way people comported themselves with him. There was a propriety in manners that I could not understand. My modern brain simply could not wrap itself around how people from different classes were to treat each other. It made the difference between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy seem even more apparent and distant. This author made me think.

Strong religious element: This was our Mary Bennet so there would naturally be discussions regarding the existence of God, scripture references, and prayers for deliverance when in danger. Throughout the story, Mary expressed a strong concern for the immortal future of Mr. Lyons. In their discussions, her spiritual foundation was shaken and this brought on a journey of reflection and an examination of her belief system. This resulted in a lessening of her rigid, pedantic stance that had been her nature.

What I didn’t like: repetition: We experienced it, it was discussed between agents, explained again to someone else, and finally repeated again in a summary. All those clues I mentioned earlier, were painstakingly described and analyzed in a concluding report to the group. A bit of trimming would help tighten this up considerably.

Note regarding the Prequel: At first, I thought reading the prequel would be a good introduction to this new character. After reading it, I was glad I did. However, in hindsight, it might have been better to read it after Book 1 because I was somewhat disappointed. I liked him much better in the prequel. In Mystery, he was way more interesting. The feature was all about him and I enjoyed a wider range of his abilities and skills than he was able to show in this story. Of course, that could be reader preference. Either way, they can be read in any order.

10-4-20: I won this from the author during a random drawing at the Austen Authors website. There were no stipulations requiring a review in the giveaway. It was my choice to review both books. I look forward to reading book 2 in the series. There were a few editing errors. The main one was Lucan Lodge. Yipes. Sir William and Lady Lucas would not appreciate that. Following this story was an excerpt of book 2 in the series [Death in Highbury], author’s notes, and blurbs on additional books written by our author.

"Elizabeth Bennet, Murderess" (quote from the book)

Oh, my goodness! I loved this mystery...I loved this Miss Mary Bennet! I found the book difficult to put down when real life intruded and when I needed sleep. But most of all, I found the development, or should I say, the nuances of this Mary Bennet to be believable.

"Mary Bennet sometimes wondered whether she had been born on a full moon, or on some day sacred to the pagan druids, or whether she had been cursed in infancy with some hex, for she seemed to have been granted the dubious gift of invisibility." (quote from the book)

I must say, I had been looking forward to starting this series after reading "The Mystery of the Missing Heiress" and being completely charmed by the original character Mr. Alexander Lyons. I couldn't wait to see the sparks flying between him and Miss Mary Bennet when they met. And boy do the sparks fly as they each work to prove the innocence of Elizabeth after Mr. Collins is found murdered!

"There must be more pieces to this puzzle she decided, for at the moment it was like a charade with half of the words missing." (quote from the book)

This all takes places after the Netherfield Ball and immediately after Mr. Collins has proposed to Elizabeth Bennet. Throughout the investigation, Mr. Darcy is present. Their story still develops and their 'Hunsford moment' is just as painful. But this is definitely Mary's story and I loved every minute of it! Her powers of deduction, her observations (especially, when she first meets Mr. Lyons) and her inner thoughts had me in her corner the whole way through! She proves herself to be not only a worthy sister, but a worthy young woman that you can wholeheartedly admire.

I highly recommend this 'Pride & Prejudice Mystery' and look forward to the next book in this series!

Can Mary Solve the Murder of Mr. Collins?

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Source: Review Copy from Author

TYPE OF NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Mystery, Secondary Character

SERIES: Miss Mary Investigates #1

NOTE: There is a prequel novella to this book titled The Mystery of the Missing Heiress (which is currently free!) And it is recommended, although not imperative, to read that story before reading this book.

THE PREMISE: Just a few hours after his unsuccessful proposal to Elizabeth Bennet Mr. Collins is found dead. And because of evidence discovered at the scene and Elizabeth’s own injuries and appearance she is accused of his murder. While Mary is ready to do all she can to clear her beloved sister’s name, a detective hired by Mr. Darcy journeys to Meryton with the same purpose. Can these two unite their efforts to save Elizabeth and discover who is the real murderer?

WHAT I LOVED:

- Mary: Not only did I love seeing the spotlight on Mary, I also loved seeing Ms. Everly’s choices with Mary’s character. Because she is often overlooked and neglected, Mary has become quite adept at listening and witnessing all that takes place around her. She is able to make shrewd observations and possesses a remarkably perceptive nature. Instead of being known for sermonizing and stilted accomplishments, this version of Mary repeatedly displays determined bravery, selfless devotion, and open-minded curiosity. She is a true heroine worthy of our admiration.

- Alexander Lyons: What a fascinating new original character! Like a Regency Sherlock Holmes! I marveled to see his skills of deductive reasoning while solving this murder. He is meticulously thorough and astute with a vast knowledge of skills and understanding. I also loved that he is from Scotland and has some rough manners. In addition, an interesting juxtaposition of his character was his open-minded objectivity when working on a case and his sometimes prejudiced mindset against anyone above his station.

- Sleuthing Team: I loved seeing these characters work together, support each others’ efforts, and establish stronger relationships. The rapport and mutual respect that continues to grow between Darcy and Alexander was lovely to witness. And I especially enjoyed seeing the development of Mary and Alexander’s relationship – how it starts off with bad footing and animosity, but later grows in amity and admiration.

- Perfect Balance: This book is a murder mystery, secondary character spotlight story, and a P&P variation all in one! I appreciated how the author placed the mystery and Mary Bennet’s storyline in the foreground and at the same time delivered a romantic storyline between Darcy and Elizabeth as a secondary subplot. Even with the grim murder investigation and mysterious puzzles taking center stage, readers still get to see an ardent and fiercely protective Mr. Darcy.
- Questioning Good and Evil: I enjoyed how the author used the horrendous and grizzly events that were uncovered in this tale as an impetus for Mary Bennet to question her beliefs and faith. Does believing in the doctrines of a religion or church guarantee goodness and morality? It feels like Mary’s character is on the brink of an interesting evolution.

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Some Quibbles: There felt like there were a few times where I felt the characters may have acted a little too abruptly or intensely (SPOILER ALERT! For example: Mr. Darcy’s awfully timed and abrupt proposal, when just the day before he learned Elizabeth’s true opinion of him and the tall mountain he has to climb to win her good opinion.) In addition, I couldn’t figure out how and when Alexander injured his hip (is it in the prequel?). After seeing his sudden change of mood and his unexpectedly rude outburst towards Mary, I was wishing I understood what exactly had caused it. And lastly, there sometimes felt like some events were manufactured with less plausibility (Lydia’s part and Wickham’s quickly developed connections and responsibilities).

CONCLUSION:

With Death of a Clergyman, Riana Everly begins what promises to be a most enthralling and encompassing detective series! I cannot wait to see more of Mary Bennet and Alexander Lyons – the development of both their individual characters, their relationship together, and the mysteries they encounter! Especially since it looks like they might be journeying to Highbury next!!!

This is one of those mysteries I could not put down. It's written as a variation of Pride and Prejudice, and there is romance going on as well, and all the usual characters, with the addition of Alexander Lyons, an investigator whom Mr. Darcy hires to look into a murder for which Elizabeth Bennet is the prime suspect. Darcy wants Lyons to clear Elizabeth of this crime.

Mary Bennet is one of a few point-of-view characters in this variation, and she has been doing some investigating of her own, before Lyons even arrives in Meryton. Soon she, Lyons, and Darcy join forces to solve this compelling and most puzzling murder.

I love Mary Bennet in this story. I've read some other books by other authors with her as an investigator, but this one outshines them all. She goes through a lot of growth in this story, and gets the opportunity to be more than the nearly invisible, forgotten middle Bennet sister. It's refreshing to see her so appreciated. There is some humor here as well, which I found delightful.

It's a complex mystery, and for that reason some of the evidence being retold here and there seems a bit repetitive, and I got confused about a few events. But it wraps up well at the end, and made me look forward to other books in the series.

Pride and Prejudice x 2
Mr. Collins is murdered following his failed proposal to Elizabeth, and she is accused of it. Darcy takes it upon himself to hire an investigator, Alexander Lyons, to help prove her innocence. Along for the ride is Mary, who makes her own observations, and is also determined to prove Elizabeth not guilty of such a heinous crime.

There is a lot to like about this book. First, is the always enjoyable writing style of Riana Everly. The story captures your attention from the outset, and maintains it through to the end. It is very well written.

Second, while the book can be classed as a mystery, it is also a Pride and Prejudice variation. Not only are we treated to a very good Elizabeth-Darcy story, with some of the usual misunderstandings of pride and prejudice, but we are also delighted with an excellent Mary story. She and Alexander also display those P&P traits upon their acquaintance. Pride and Prejudice times two!

Finally, the murder mystery itself is very intriguing. You will find yourself trying to solve the mystery along with Mary, Alexander and Darcy. I found myself going back and forth deciding just who had done the deed.

I loved the book and highly recommend it. Well done, and I look forward to Mary and Alexander’s next case.

NOTE: Don’t miss the prequel to this book, The Mystery of the Missing Heiress, which tells of how Darcy came to know Alexander.

Death of a Clergyman is the first book in the Miss Mary Investigates series and can be read as a standalone story, however, I highly recommend starting by its prequel, The Mystery of the Missing Heiress, which is a small novella (currently free) that introduces to us an original character who will be crucial in Death of a Clergyman. I’ve read this prequel and absolutely loved not only the main character but also the writing style, and how the author was able to build the plot, so my expectations towards Death of a Clergyman were very high.

In Death of a Clergyman Mr. Collins is found dead and Elizabeth is accused of his murder. When Mr. Darcy hears the news, he immediately reaches out to Alexander Lyons, the private investigator we are introduced to in the novella, and hires him to investigate the murder of Mr. Collins and prove Elizabeth’s innocence. Both Mr. Darcy and Lyons travel to Hertfordshire with the objective of helping Elizabeth, but they are not the only ones who are focused on finding the real criminal. Miss Mary, the sister no one seems to remember exists, is the perfect ally to solve this crime because she sees and hears much more than people ever stop to consider. Her discreet personality along with an intelligence not many know of and a very curious nature, will gain Lyons respect and after a rough beginning, they will pair up to follow all the clues.

The initial approach to Mary and how she is able to obtain most of her intel about the crime was very interesting. The author did Mary credit and I truly liked her personality on this story. Plus, I truly liked having her as a main character in a novel that is more of a mystery than a romance. In fact, I was expecting to see more romance between Mary and Lyons, but I guess that is waiting for me in the next novel: Death in Highbury. I did like their relationship, and how it grew, so it will be very nice to see it evolve a bit more in the next novel.

Apart from Mary’s character and the approach the author had towards her, I also loved to see Elizabeth and Darcy present in this book. Do not be fooled by the idea that this is a secondary character story, it is true that Mary is the main character but there are many Darcy and Elizabeth scenes present on this book, including a proposal! Not only did I like to have them as an active part in this story, especially Darcy, but also to see all their encounters from a third party perspective. That is very rare as we usually see books from either Elizabeth or Darcy’s point of view, and here we witness the scenes from Mary or Lyons eyes, and that neutrality was super interesting.

I liked to see how all the pieces came together to form the puzzle that was Mr. Collins death and I only started realizing who the guilty party was towards the end. For me, the enthusiasm was not to find out who did it, but to follow Mary and Lyons investigations and to trail their line of thought. I was happy to see how their minds started working as one towards the end, which is another indicator that the next story will be quite interesting.

Summing up, Death of a Clergyman is a curious mystery that gives Mary Bennet the attention she deserves. If you like this character, you will certainly like this book, and if you do not, you should give it a try, you may be surprised.

The story begins with a lovely, poetic description of the landscape, where the autumn leaves flutter down into a burbling stream, and the blood of a corpse is woven into the water.

This is Mary's story, the invisible sister, the one who, being unnoticed herself, quietly observes everything that happens around her. Thus, when Elizabeth is accused of murdering Mr. Collins, Mary begins her own investigation. Darcy has hired Alexander Lyons, a Scottish investigator in London who helped find Georgiana earlier that year. He has no tolerance for the gentry, finding all of them useless, which pits him against Mary and her own findings.

As the two gather clues separately, they frequently meet to share information. Their initial disdain for each other slowly turns to respect, and they begin to notice their own prejudices as the plot advances.

I was enchanted by this unusual variation, much more than I expected to be. Although Darcy and Elizabeth's romance was mentioned in the story, I was far more interested in Mary and Mr. Lyons. It's well-written and part of a series, so there's more to come which will showcase Mary's talents.

In this P&P variation, the Netherfield Ball and the marriage proposal of Collins to Elizabeth Bennet have occurred. Both Elizabeth and Collins have left Longbourn that very morning, only for the body of Collins to be found, stabbed, and for a distraught and battered Elizabeth to arrive back to Longbourn.
Darcy on hearing the news engages Alexander Lyons to investigate. Meanwhile Mary is determined to prove her sister innocent.
A delightful and well-written mystery and romance, lovely to see Mary Bennet come out of the shadows. A very enjoyable variation

A very well written mystery involving our dear characters. I love stories with an intelligent Mary instead of the usual colorless one. And Alexander Lyons is a well crafted interesting character and the friendship developing between the two is interesting to read.

Excellent book all the way around.

A few errors of regency manners including Darcy using the Bingley sisters first names and the Bennets owning a phaeton. Also the incorrect palate.

There was humor: Lady Catherine’s letters were funny.

There was depth including Mary’s crisis of faith.

I loved the OC of Alexander.

This was my second reading of Death of a Clergyman. I wasn't reviewing on GR during the first read-through. I received this book as a giveaway during the book's blog tour with no obligation to review, but I reviewed it on Amazon and I'm copying and pasting parts of it for this review. Then I'm going to make an update or two afterward. Some trigger warnings for sexual assault and grisly murder scenes.

11-29-20 Elizabeth accused of killing Mr. Collins...all jokes aside (we've all discussed the best way of offing him, haven't we?) it's no joke being accused of a murder. Enter our dear Hero, Mr. Darcy armed with his friend the investigator Alexander Lyons. According to the beginning of this story this is his first murder case, not his usual investigation area. That explains his reactions when finding another murder victim.

In this story, as everybody knows by now, Mary Bennet and Mr Lyons are the real h&H here. Mary's got the ability to disappear into the background and yet she's well-regarded by the community enough that cooks and maids and housekeepers will answer any of her questions. Her being ignored has made her more than unusually observant, and she overhears things she needs to share with the investigator when these bits of info seem to add up to more than the sum of their parts.

Mr Lyons, full of anti-privileged, anti-peerage, pride sees Mary only as a spoiled pampered rich girl at first. He's rather crude to her the first time she approaches and he has his reasons. Lyons only once just barely questions himself regarding his own pride, when he's very conscious of EVERYone else's pride. However, it doesn't take too long to see Mary has some value of her own in the investigation, and this grows and grows. By the time the murderer is suspected, (I had my own suspects hoping it wasn't person #A or person #B.) Mary and Alexander acknowledge they are quite a team and he is full of admiration for her. And the push/pull between them goes right to the last page. Cannot wait for the next book!!

Darcy and Elizabeth get plenty of page time too, this is their unfolding love story, although told very differently. Riana Everly did such a great job keeping up the suspense until the end. I highly recommend this one, although I've really liked every book of hers. By the way People, look up the history of base ball on Wikipedia. It's mention in this book is not historically inaccurate!!

5-10-22
Actually, I think I did a better job of reviewing than I expected of myself. On the second reading, since I knew who did it I took more time slowly following along with each bit of information that was revealed, and I had a hard time sticking with it in order to finish it. This is however, how I like my mysteries, slow and complicated, lots and lots of clues or anti-clues.... This time I found Lyons' chip on his shoulder about the gentry and peerage to be a trifle tiresome. On one hand it helped me understand the struggle, on the other hand it helped me understand how easy it would be to take the resentment to a more active and rebellious level. What made someone such as Mr. Gardiner who was also educated and successful tradesman in business be of such a warm and giving nature, but with the ability to relate comfortably with men of a much higher social standing than his? Maybe it was his success only, maybe it was the love of a good woman and the desire to keep her and their family well provided for.

There's so much to appreciate about this book. The most important part for me is the intelligent writing and Riana Everly giving us an occasional view inside the character's minds and hearts. For obvious reasons many players had to be much more two dimensional but we get some very lovely insights sprinkled around judiciously. Highly recommended.

Grizzly, but fun

This is a lovely and comfortable tale featuring our own mousey Mary Bennett, and the somewhat crude but intriguing Alexander Lyons, the London investigator introduced in The Case of the Missing Heiress. The day after the Netherfield ball, Elizabeth refuses the proposal of Mr Collins, and later the same day he is found dead, stabbed in the neck with a knife belonging to Elizabeth. She's accused of the crime, and Darcy immediately engages Lyons to solve the case. At this point in time, Elizabeth still dislikes Darcy, trusts Wickham, and Darcy himself is just coming to realize how much he cares for Elizabeth, and what lengths he'll go to in order to save her life.

I love JAFF variations in which Mary Bennett is given some personality. In this one, she is well aware that she is all but invisible in her family, but she uses this status to indulge her curious mind. She listens to all around her, and makes a sort of game of predicting outcomes and events based on what she learns. When Elizabeth is accused of the murder, Mary immediately makes the decision to put her listening and observing skills to the ultimate test: that of saving her sister.

This whodunit is so much fun because the ones investigating, Mary Bennett and Alexander Lyons, have their own personal tug-of-war going on at the same time as their attraction for each other grows. Their eventual respect for each other is reluctant but well earned. Then we have Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship evolving at the same time, and that's also enjoyable. This is a loving but clueless Darcy, who badly bungles his efforts with Elizabeth at the start, but loves her enough to persevere. The romance, while not taking center stage, is wonderful.

It's the murder mystery that does take center stage, and all of the twists and turns are quite exciting. It's great fun to follow along, mostly because Mary Bennett and Alexander Lyons are so wonderfully clever. The things that they each discover individually come together like the pieces of a puzzle, and they make an engaging team. The author doesn't skimp on any of the grizzly details of the murder, but it isn't overly gruesome. There are serious subjects raised, including murder, attempted rape, and intimidation of women. However it's handled very well and is never glorified.

I love this author, and hope to read more from her in the future. The book is very well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

Death of a Clergyman (Miss Mary Investigates Book 1)

What a delightful book this turned out to be. Glad to see Mary Bennet finally come into her own while saving her sister Elizabeth from being accused of the death of William Collins, despicable though he was. As soon as Darcy heard of Elizabeth’s predicament, he hires a friend, Alexander Lyons, to assist in investigating the murder to discover the real killer. Double misunderstandings occur when Darcy returns the next day after leaving Netherfield. Darcy and Elizabeth need to iron out their problems and Alexander and Mary butt heads as they come together to solve the murder. The author did super job keeping me guessing as to the murderer as my chief suspect turns up murdered before the end of the story. Great story and well written. Thank goodness Elizabeth learns to reevaluate her actions towards Darcy as he proves his undeniable commitment to Elizabeth. Well worth the read. Cannot wait for book 2.

This is a P&P murder mystery where Elizabeth finds herself under suspicion in the death of Mr. Collins. Mary is the Bennet sister that gets the most page time in this book as she takes on the role of sister sleuth to help exonerate her sister. The mystery part of this book was decent, but unfortunately, I struggled to feel any emotional connection to this story at all. To me it felt more like reading a report of a crime/crimes along with the evidence and trying to fit the pieces together rather than a story about people and their lives and relationships. I was disappointed in the portrayal of the relationship between D&E. There was no chemistry or development of their feelings. I think I would have enjoyed this more if the P&P aspect was left out of this and it was just an original mystery.

I have but ten minutes ago finished reading Death of a Clergyman by Riana Everly, and I tell you it is an absolute delight. Always a joy to see Jane Austen's beloved characters, but to see them in a different guise is great fun. The characters we dearly loved are beautifully portrayed in the manner we have come to love them, but to see Mary Bennet in a new role is brilliantly achieved. The addition of the investigator adds a distinct and enjoyable flavor to the cast of characters. The mystery is well plotted and its solution is no give away. Mary's part in helping to solve the murder of Mr. Collins is written in a completely believable fashion. I have no doubt you will enjoy this book as much as I have.

original

This novel is part of the trend to put minor characters at the centre of Pride and Prejudice variations. As mystery and mayhem ensue, Mary Bennett steps into the spotlight. Her ability to blend into the background places her in a perfect position to observe and investigate, though her relationship with Alexander Lyons demonstrates its own variations on pride and prejudice. I found the mystery intriguing and plot variations very original. Triggers: Violence and sexual abuse.

I think this is one of the better crafted P&P variation mysteries I've read so far. The characters felt well crafted and the stakes felt high. Clues were littered throughout and connected well without being so far out. I especially love Mary being given a chance to shine without losing what little we know about her - she's less moralising and pedantic but still not great with people, still stubborn and prickly at times. And Alexander is a great character. I love how their dynamics develop into respect and friendship. Cannot wait to eventually read the sequel!

A lively and thoroughly enjoyable murder mystery with a P&P twist. ODC work through their issues against the backdrop of Elizabeth being accused of murdering Me Collins. However the stars of the show are Alexander Lyons, a Scottish detective, and the redoubtable Mary Bennet with her talent for invisibility and an intelligent and observant nature.

This was a charming take, and the mystery itself was engrossing and believable. Recommended.

In this P&P variation, the Netherfield Ball and the marriage proposal of Collins to Elizabeth Bennet have occurred. Both Elizabeth and Collins have left Longbourn that very morning, only for the body of Collins to be found, stabbed, and for a distraught and battered Elizabeth to arrive back at Longbourn.
Darcy on hearing the news engages Alexander Lyons to investigate. Meanwhile Mary is determined to prove her sister innocent.
A delightful and well-written mystery and romance, lovely to see Mary Bennet come out of the shadows. A very enjoyable well-written variation and a re-read.

Good mystery where Mary Bennet works with a private detective from London that Darcy has hired to prove Elizabeth’s innocence in the death of Mr. Collins. Most of the Pride and Prejudice characters are within the novel and the murder has some interesting clues that Mary and her co-detective follow to reveal the least expected suspect to be the murderer.

Excellent!

I loved everything about this. There was an interesting mystery, a touch of romance-and Mary Bennett. Mary has always interested me-being in the middle-she also seemed alone. In this version, I enjoyed how she coped with new issues and began to question many of her previous ideals. I have already downloaded the next book.

Reminds me of Agatha Christie

This had an Agatha Christie feel to it. It is a clean murder mystery that revolved around a set of suspects who all had a motive to kill Mr. Collins. Random, seemingly unconnected events and occurrences factor in to the storyline making it hard to guess the killer. Very well done, I was quite impressed with the plot line. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the investigator but I really liked Mary.

Great Read!

I really enjoyed this book. I love reading about Mary Bennett. To me, she is much more interesting than Elizabeth. The only variations I purchase now are about Mary, so I can't wait to read the next book in this series. Please don't keep me waiting!

Loved it!

Though this book was far from canon P&P, it was a joy to read. It was very well written and kept me engaged all the way to the end. I loved Mr Lyons addition along with Miss Mary’s character development. Excited to read the next book and hopefully more to come.

Really, Really Good Book

This was such a great story! Forgotten Mary Bennet takes center stage to help Alexander Lyons with his latest investigation, this time set in Meryton. Definitely a must read!

Excellent story telling!

I have always hoped that Collins, Wickham and those BB dreadful Bing key sisters would get their cumupance. Yeas!!
This new character, Alexander, is just made for Mary!
Can't wait to read the next one!
